Dyeing articulated G4 ponies?
« on: January 23, 2021, 09:12:36 PM »
I'm getting a bait articulated G4 Rainbow Dash in the mail I'd like to dye a slightly darker and purpler color.

I don't want to do a full body repaint because the paint will come off around the joints...
Can these be dyed by just dipping them in boiling rit dyemore like a normal pony?

I imagine it'd work to some extent, but her different pieces would probably take it differently. I know that some Monster High customizers dye the doll first then repaint, mainly to bring the joints closer to the final color so that the inevitable chipping will be less noticeable...

Dollightful has also showcased a method using just MSC and chalk pastel, but I imagine it'd be quite expensive. MSC is a hard-to-find-locally product for many people, and this uses a lot of it!

If you can get her apart completely without breaking her (good luck with that!), you could dye the pieces individually until they're the desired shade. They do have a screw on their underbelly...
Here's my ACNH creator code. I thought I might share it, since I have quite a few pony designs.

I'm no dying expert, but I'd think that it would work just fine. But her joints work with a ball joint, correct? If so it may not get the full joint, but I don't think it'll be noticable.

Are we allowed to post YouTube video links here? I have some jointed doll dyeing videos you might find helpful!

I am worried about water getting trapped inside her and molding from being submerged :(

Thank you xx
Does anyone know if her insides will fill up with water and how to prevent it? So so scared of mold - most of my ponies have their heads sealed!

I dyed her today ! The base was Rainbow Dash

I dipped the entire pony in boiling rit dye more.
The vinyl parts (limbs, wings and head) dye extremely fast and I got a darker color than intended.
The torso part is a different hard plastic and doesn't take dye as well. So you have to disassemble and dye the torso seperate. The joints didn't dye much but it is much better than peeling everywhere. Keep the base ponies colors in mind when selecting a bait.
The pony is easy to disassemble, I undid the screw and she came in pieces.
The tail dyed almost black but the mane didn't - probably because the tail was in the dye a lot longer. The tail was easy to pull out with a pliers, then I widened the hole with a scissors and tied the end of a bread tie around the new one and pulled it through. I cut the bread tie as short as I could, and pushed it all back up against the hole, and glued it. There is a little hole for a peg that keeps the body together right by the tail hole so you don't have much room. The mane also came out extremely easy without needing to widen the neck hole - probably because of the boiling water. The eyes turned darker but didn't disappear.

Well, I tried to put mine back together last night but my EPS was acting up so bad I couldn't steady my hand enough to turn a screw. I'll try again later. The wings are tough to get back in the slot!
