Customs / Has Dolly Hair's New Management Improved Things?
« on: July 15, 2021, 03:16:53 PM »
I know a lot of people have written off Dolly Hair because of the issues with orders in the past, but there's a few colours where my only other option would be a shop overseas, and I know the store changed hands last year, so I was wondering if anyone has had the chance to order from the new owner and if things are any better now.

Wanted! / Chibis Applejack?
« on: June 09, 2018, 04:00:30 PM »
Hello everyone

Does anyone have a reasonably priced Applejack from the We Love Fine series? She's the only one I'm missing from my collection since I live in Canada and my attempts to time ordering her so she would ship with another figure didn't work out. I don't mind if she's missing her box

Off Topic / Does anyone speak Italian well enough to help me with this?
« on: September 27, 2017, 03:14:59 PM »
I hope this is alright, this was the only place I could think of to ask....

Alright, this requires a bit of back story: a few months ago I found an old anime series from the 70s that I ended up becoming quite attached to....unfortunately the company that made it has never seen fit to release the Japanese version in it's entirety (I have all 3 DVDs that are out right now), which is a bit of a cruel irony considering more or less every single dub of the show (including both English versions) are quite easy to find online. There are a couple of companies that are good candidates for releasing it, either here or in Japan, but thus far nothing has been announced. A few years back one of my friends told me that buying DVDs of the Italian dub of a retro anime is a good option if a full series hasn't been released in Japan since they usually release all of it and include the original version, but I wasn't able to find the series I was looking for that way either (Which is a little bit ironic all things considered)....Until possibly last night.

I came across a video last night which advertises a full DVD release of the series and I wanted to try asking at the email address if the Japanese version is included for all 52 episodes....Unfortunately I only know English & Japanese and my knowledge of Latin languages is a bit dicey (I know enough of a few of them to sort of feel my way through shopping websites and a few other things), does anyone speak Italian well enough to help me find out what I need to? Thank you

Customs / Help With Paint Markers
« on: August 29, 2017, 12:08:19 AM »
The list of custom ponies I want to make includes a few that for one reason or another would require changing the pony's colour completely (Keep in mind that all of these are colouring G4 Ponies light pink either from white or a colder and slightly darker shade of pink) and after a bit of research I decided on trying paint markers (I used Deco markers brand since they had the shade of pink I wanted, but I had considered using Molotow and custom mixing it if anyone thinks that brand will work better) since I know dye can look a bit off after a while and after reading the topic on it I decided my idea of using that to get the colour I wanted by dying it brighter and letting it fade wouldn't work. I was a bit worried about repainting it though since full repainted G4 Ponies rarely look right to me; it isn't the brush strokes either, I know how you can avoid them, it's the finish of the paint always being either too glossy or too matte and I don't need to do this enough to justify buying an airbrush.

Either way, I finally did my first test a few days ago and for the most part I was happy with the results; the colour was right, it didn't alter the finish very much, and it would only take a coat or two. But there were two issues I need help with, the first is that there were marker lines produced from the marker head being so small (I know part of it was due to my applying it oddly); I'll have to take it off and redo it anyway because of a few small marks I forgot to wash off so that isn't an issue (Acetone for that, yes? It's a water based paint), but what would be the best way to keep it from happening again? I thought perhaps transplanting the paint into a brush headed marker since the pony is so small it would only take a stroke or two to cover each spot and having a flexible marker head would make it easier to paint in tighter areas. Does anyone know if that would work?

The other issue is it sticks a little bit, but I haven't painted anything in a while so I'm not sure if that's just the texture of the paint, washing it seems to have helped, but if I run my finger over it it doesn't move across as smoothly. Is there anything I can do besides depending on the sealant? If anyone could help that would be great.

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Help Cleaning a Possibly Moldy Plush
« on: June 14, 2017, 08:21:50 PM »
I hope this is the right place for it

I have a chance to buy a plush of a character I like, but the doll has one issue with it; there's a dirty patch on it that the seller believes is mold. Now it doesn't seem that big, the largest spot looks like it would be half the size of a pony bead (It's an auction), and the way it's posed would make it difficult to see while it's displayed, but I'd like to get rid of the mold and I'm not sure how to clean it away.

It was made by Banpresto in the late 90s, if you've ever seen a plush of a human anime character with the slightly fuzzy fabric for the skin and very short haired fabric for the hair, that's what it is, with the possible mold being on the leg (so the slightly fuzzy fabric). There may be a little on the foot too (the shoes are the very short haired fabric), but it's hard to tell from the photos, either way how do I clean it without damaging the fabric? Preferably without machine washing it or using any bleach.

I have quite a bit of experience sewing plush toys, so I can unpick the stitching on the leg to clean the fabric better and replace the cotton, I just can't replace the fabric since I have no idea where to buy it.

Any help would be great, I know it seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a doll, but the series is a bit obscure and there isn't very much in the way of accurate merchandise of the character, so I'd really love to buy it

For Trade / Seeking Train Playset Twilight
« on: March 19, 2017, 09:11:05 PM »
Hello Everyone

I'm looking for one very specific Twilight Sparkle Brushable, the one that came with the train playset and has a lighter colour than other Twilight Sparkles.

I have a few other G4 Ponies for trade including a spare Coloratura from a previous attempt to trade for her that fell through, a loose Rainbow Power Twilight, and a loose Cutie Mark Magic Skywishes, I'm also willing to buy another Pony of similar value to trade for her

Thank you

Customs / Has anyone opened up a water cuties Pegasus?
« on: January 25, 2017, 06:41:59 PM »
I had been planning to customise a water cuties Pegasus and was wondering if anyone has opened one up and seen what's inside, in particular I was wondering about the tail since the large snowglobe with they come with feel like they would take up a lot of space so I'm not sure if I would be able to access the tail normally or if I'd have to try another way. It looks like the wings might possibly be removable too, but I don't really know either way right now so if anyone has any help to offer that would be great

Pony Corral / Seeking Advice (And Train Twilight)
« on: January 18, 2017, 12:47:44 PM »
Hello, I need a bit of advice. There's one specific Pony I've been looking for and I'm not sure about the best way to get her; the Pony in question is Twilight Sparkle, what makes this release so special is that it's the only one to actually be the right shade of purple (She's pastel purple like in the show rather than that plum purple the toys usually are), the big issue is that she's $25-30 and I don't especially want the train, which is what's making her so expensive. I've tried looking on ebay for just the loose pony and nobody's had her, not even the people that sell factory rejects.

I wanted to try my luck here, I haven't found one listed, but I'm not sure what the best option to go with is; Ideally I'd like to trade the Twilight Sparkle I was going to put in my set or maybe pick up a Coloratura for the other person since the exchange rate isn't very good, but I'm a bit worried about asking there since it seems to be a bit more difficult to get what you're looking for. I also thought of perhaps asking if anyone had been looking for just the train and would like to pool their money to buy it, but I'm not sure what the odds of that are since I've seen a lot of other playsets where everyone wants the specific pony it comes with and nobody wants playset itself.

If anyone could offer any advice, that would be great

Pony Corral / About Poses
« on: June 14, 2016, 12:52:42 PM »
I have another question one: This is something I've seen brought up several times, a lot of people seem to have strong opinions on poses either which poses they prefer (and dislike), or how much variety a generation does or doesn't have and, well I don't quite understand it. I can see it adding something in their new lives as decorations, but for some people the pose alone can make a pony appealing or not or the variety of poses a generation has is used as a yardstick for it's quality.

As for their original purpose as toys, I don't think I really noticed; there weren't a large number of poses for the G2 Ponies released here but for me it mattered less than articulation; I still enjoyed non-posable toys, but the one pose they did have didn't really matter unless it was really odd (There was one doll I had that looked like she was chewing on her finger).

My questions are why are poses such a big thing, especially among the long-time fans? And did you care about the poses growing up or did it matter more as you shifted from playing with your Ponies to displaying them? And would you rather have a lot of different molded poses available or just a few poses but also have articulated ones you could pose however you wanted?

Recently I bought a lot of Ponies including two from the Pinkie Pie's boutique line that was sold at target, unfortunately due to a communication problem there was a mistake in what I received. While the seller has been great about fixing it, she didn't find out until after she had sold one figures I was missing.

Basically what I need is the brushable sized Pinkie, the one that came with the purse, preferably loose (the reason why I didn't buy it when Target was in Canada was because I thought the purse was a bit much)
This one right here: http://www.strawberryreef.com/images/Ponies/FIM/PinkiePieFIMppbPurse_M.jpg

The other thing I need is the outfit & accessories for the fashion style version (the one with the dress, not the one with the car), originally I had planned to just buy a complete one but now that I've ended up with the pony it would be great if I could find just the clothing

Here is the stock photo, it's just the dress, four shoes & the headband so I'm hoping it would be easier than some of the bigger sets: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9RZXno9dpR8/maxresdefault.jpg

I can send money through paypal, and I also have the glitter version to trade
Thank you

Sigs & Site Support / Why is it still censored?
« on: May 12, 2016, 03:52:54 PM »
I'm not sure if this is the exact place for it, but it seemed right. I was wondering why we still have the censoring for :muffin: Pony's name and to such a degree that even using a slightly different spelling or throwing a bit of punctuation in doesn't prevent it. Yes, I do realise there was a controversy surrounding her and that it was caused by communication issues during production, but that was over 4 years ago and I've seen some people have difficulty with posting links to fan works and even auctions related to her because the system does not differentiate.

Even if it's not removed entirely perhaps it could at least be adjusted so it's less strict

Pony Corral / Explaining generation preferences (mostly toyline)
« on: May 12, 2016, 02:59:36 PM »
Exactly as it says in the title: I've noticed that, while every generation has fans, some seem to be preferred more than others and I was wondering why. This is mostly to do with the toyline and I've included my theories why and explained my own preferences, mostly I'm just curious about what drives the patterns I've noticed

G1 I understand because it was the very first generation which a lot of the long time collectors have nostalgic fondness for, and even if you were born after it ended it still has some appeal. Even for those who don't like it, you can at least recognise it as the reason why the generation(s) you do like exists.

G2 I was surprised to find that so many people disliked it, I knew it wasn't very big in North America but I always presumed that it was because there was less to promote it and it didn't have a show, not that people actively disliked it. I know one of the big complaints is how different they look and that they were comparatively long & thin/didn't look like Ponies, though I always thought they looked more like Horses than Ponies.

G3 Is one I really wonder about, I know the animation was quite unpopular and somewhat polarising since most people seem to either love it or hate it. The toys on the other hand seem to be really popular among collectors and I confess I don't really understand why; they look the most like the first generation, but there are still noticable differences which don't quite do it for me, and this was the first generation to have the cutie mark on only one side. On the other hand this seems to be the first generation where adult collectors were really recognised by Hasbro and had merchandise made with older fans in mind.

G4 Is definitely one of the most successful and has a large fan base in it's own right, outside of the multi-generational fan base. It's also popular enough among long-time collectors, but then I've lately noticed that there's a faction of people who like older generations but not the current one and think the heads/faces look strange.

The G1.5/Pony Tales is well liked enough, but mostly glossed over and nobody really likes G3.5, especially newborn cuties

So from what I can tell among collectors the more popular generations are the ones where they look more pony-ish, the only skinnier pony toys (G2, Sweetheart Sisters, etc) that aren't comparatively unpopular are the Flutter Ponies, and brushable hair seems to preferred over molded (this one I'm a bit curious about since brushable hair does have more style options, but molded hair tends to be more show-accurate and I'm part of the minority that saw brushable hair as a more of a liability than an asset since it wouldn't stay in place). Also Sea Ponies seem more popular than Flutter Ponies & "Wingers"

As for my own preferences I think the reason behind them is partially that generation I owned as a child was G2 and I occasionally played with my babysitter's old G1 ponies when I stayed at her house so I had exposure to both, which caused me to be more comfortable with more stylised Pony toys than somebody who started with G1 and didn't see G2 until they were starting to move away from those sort of toys. There's also the fact that when G2 came out what drew me to them was that they were My Little Pony, not that they were Ponies if that makes sense; I know one part of what makes the toy line work is that most girls go through (and in some cases never leave) a phase where they're obsessed with horses and Ponies are both a horse toy and a doll, but I wasn't in that phase when G2 started.

However I was familiar with My Little Pony; I knew it was a thing and had heard a bit about it from people who actually existed during the 80s, one of my toys had a T.V. set where the sticker screen was likely meant to reference it, I even had vague recollections of watching what turned out to be Escape From Katrina, but I wasn't able to find videos of it until I was about 8 years old so it also had a certain amount of mystique for me as some other 80s shows did. So perhaps that's why I'm more tolerant of Ponies that are less Pony-like

Trader & Shipping Support / Did Dolly Hair's Shipping Rate Change?
« on: April 23, 2016, 01:11:51 PM »
Basically exactly what the title says, I had been waiting until I had enough projects arranged to place a $50 order and when I went on the website it said that shipping to Canada would cost $6 if I placed the order today. If I remember correctly wasn't it originally free shipping to Canada and the US for orders over $50 and under $100? Did the shipping rates actually change or am I just remembering when there was a sale on, and if it changed does anyone know why?

I'm especially frustrated since 1-The exchange rate is still bad and only just starting to pick up (add an extra 25% instead of an extra 33%) and, 2-It doesn't really change that much, if you're right around the $50 mark and mostly buying hair you only save about $4 on shipping

Customs / Lightly Dyeing G4s?
« on: April 09, 2016, 11:37:06 PM »
Tying into the recent pattern of questions being asked about dyeing G4 Ponies, I was wondering about doing really pale dye jobs. There are a few customs I wanted to make where there simply aren't any Ponies with the right colour that are feasible to use so I was planning to dye them since it doesn't block out the original finish of the plastic like painting does, but I thought I'd ask a few things before I tried.

Would rit dye work for doing really light dye work? All the Ponies I'm using are recently made G4 Ponies using the new face molds. I know these don't take dyes very well, or at least not the regular liquid rit dye I plan to use, and that rit's colours are fairly bright but perhaps those two factors together would give me the right colour.
I'm planning to use these for Sparkler (tinting Rarity light blue), a pale pink fan character (Holly Dash is the exact colour I'm trying to get close to), and a minor character that I'm using Pursey Pink as the base for (I'm trying to make her a more orangey yellow, similar to Sunset Shimmer)

My other question is about left over glue, I saw in one of the other topics on using rit dye that in the example there were streaks from glue that went unnoticed and I was wondering how I can avoid it without soaking the toy in nail polish remover.

Thank you

Arts & Crafts Corral / Takara Replica Help, how to go about it?
« on: April 04, 2016, 07:09:57 PM »
Hello Everypony

I've wanted a Takara Pony for a long time, but the official ones are really expensive and difficult to find even on Japanese websites, so I'd like to somehow have a replica made. I remember somebody had done basic ones several years ago that you could paint the eyes on and add hair & clothing to and that's all I would really need. Ideally I'd like it to be slightly hollow, at least enough to add the hair

I'm debating whether I should commission one or try to make it myself the main issues are:

1- Cost, I know that commissions can be expensive (though still cheaper than what the previously sold Takara Ponies went for) because of the amount of work that goes into them. But at the same time the figure itself is fairly simple and whoever makes one would be able to then make more to sell to other people who want a Takara Pony for the look of them and don't mind it being a fan made piece. For making one I don't really have any supplies for that, especially the way I'd ideally like to have it done so I'd have to buy everything.

2- Making it, I don't know how good I'd be at sculpting something this size. It's been a long time since I last sculpted something and the only thing I was really comfortable making were tiny figures under 1 inch and I was never confident making something big, but I was only about 14 the last time I tried to make something big and Takara Ponies are fairly simply shaped

3-Making more, depending on price and things like that I'd probably want to have more than one sooner or later and that would be easier if I had my own mold. Theoretically I could ask that whoever I commission sends me a copy of the mold but then I'm not sure where I would get the material for filling it and, depending on what it's made of, I may have to store the mold in an airtight box when I'm not using it since I live with my parents and my mother has latex allergies (using it wouldn't be a problem since I could do that in the garage when she's at work on a day she'll have a program on, but I can't store it there because I live in Canada and it might be damaged during the winter).

The other option is to 3D print it, which would let me reuse the pattern and I know for sure I could make it hollow; but I don't know if I'd be able to get rid of the printing lines and looking at the close-up photos it seems to be made of a similar plastic to the actual toys and I'm not sure if anything available now behave that way

If there's anyone that could offer help I would greatly appreciate it
