Arts & Crafts Corral / Getting back on the creative horse!
« on: September 13, 2020, 11:39:21 AM »
Okay, so I haven't been creating much for quite a while now, whether writing, photography or drawing, and it took a lot of reflection to work out why I hadn't felt like creating anything, but I've gotten to the bottom of that now, and worked out how to move forward. So from here, my aim is to get back into doing art in various forms by taking small, realistic steps. At the bare minimum, I'm aiming for just one drawing a week.

Already cheated on my goal because I haven't drawn anything this week, due to having too much going on, but from last week, here's a quick sketch of my ponysona, Petrichor. She's meant to be a sort of faded sage green with dark grey points and slate-coloured hair, but getting those particular shades with my watercolours just wasn't happening at the time, so she's in greyscale with a sort of tree-bark pattern for now.

And hopefully next week, I'll have made good on my goal and have some more art to share!

Pony Corral / Rather G2-looking pony tin!
« on: June 14, 2019, 12:29:23 PM »
So today, I stumbled upon this very cute little tin in a charity shop and got it on a whim because it does look a bit G2-esque, in terms of how the pony/unicorn/pegasus looks. It was only £1 and it's for a good cause, but I do take objection to the word "smiggle", it sounds very slippery and unpleasant - I don't want that word near me...
Fussiness aside - yay, pony!

I don't really have any need for any more storage of any shape or size in this house and the style doesn't quite fit in anywhere, so I probably won't be holding onto it for long. If anyone would like to give this tin a home, by all means, let me know. :)

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / All the pretty horses
« on: September 29, 2018, 09:41:58 AM »
So I finally got round to getting some photos of my little herd, albeit that the lighting in my room didn't want to co-operate, nor did my belligerent camera, despite copious amounts of fiddling with settings, adjusting exposure, trying different focal points and the like. Might've duffered editing the photos as well, as I haven't done it for a while, but here they are!

Starting with my personal favourite of the lot, I'd been playing Shadow of the Colossus and of course I wanted a little Agro of my own - she is a very good horse. I was very excited to find this one, not quite bang-on accurate but close enough for me (she doesn't have white markings anywhere on her legs but it was astoundingly difficult for me to just to find a black horse with a star on its head!) The little red one is Patrick, the lucky horse - he's been there for quite a while before I got a shine on for collecting models.

Aurelia, guardian of the music at the moment. I didn't intend to have quite so many black horses about but Friesians really are beautiful.

And now for some rather more exotic horses - who's that hiding behind the ponies?

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

It's Posada! He's up on a high shelf at the moment, so he looks as if he's proudly surveying his domain a lot of the time. XD

And Carnacki, probably the single most right-up-my-alley model of anything ever, also probably my last Traditional size Breyer because yikes! I didn't realise they were that big! I do think they make nice statement pieces, though - especially as my room already has quite a few year-round Halloweeny decorations - but given the sheer size of these horses, I don't think there's anywhere that I could feasibly display any more big models without the room feeling overwhelmed. (Alas, I will have to pass on the Fell pony...) :P

And some considerably smaller Breyers, Ivor the Highland pony and Dauðalogn, the Icelandic horse. These two are looking after the more folky part of my room, where the fiddle and the acoustic guitars live.

And a nice family photo of everyone altogether... bit of an odd family but that's why I like 'em. XD

So there's my somewhat scattershot herd, I like to choose horses (and ponies) based on what gets me fired up, even if they are a little mismatched. Now it's your turn! What are your preferences for model horses? Do you focus on particular breeds, brands or themes? (Feel free to show off some photos, too - I'd love to see some more pretty horses!) :)

Off Topic / Charity shop finds!
« on: June 23, 2018, 04:22:57 AM »
So as I've just got my first round of wages from my new job, it was finally time to go in search of a new bag; my old one has been patched up so many times it's basically a heap of threads that are questioning whether or not they want anything to do with each other. However, I ended up walking past this one charity shop that sometimes has ponies hiding in there and hey presto - I got sidetracked! Unfortunately, there were no ponies to be had today but all was not lost!

First I found this very lovely, dreamy picture. This photo doesn't really do it justice; the shading is really deep and it makes an interesting contrast with the mellow colours. Haven't decided where to hang it yet (and please excuse the unfinished sanding job on the drawers - it's been a very busy few weeks!)

I also found this rather unique fish-shaped... jug? Vase? Whatever it is, it's delightful and I knew just the place for it right from the off.

And as for the bag, I found just the thing in the local New Agey shop, buried under a heap of others that were very pretty but quite flimsy - when this one turned up, I knew it was the perfect bag to take the place of the one that's just had its chips. Quite a sturdy little thing, just right for taking a book and my lunch to work, there's a huge pocket between the flap and the main compartment for all my important things and it was only £5! I'm going to customise it, as there are a couple of patches that didn't quite work on my favourite jacket, then it ought to feel a bit more loved after having so much time forgotten at the bottom of a box!

Having gotten this lot for £13, I'm feeling like quite the master bargain hunter right now. XD

Pony Brag Arena / Itty bitty brag
« on: March 08, 2018, 08:03:49 AM »
It's been ages since I last got any ponies but I stumbled upon cheap Playskool ponies from China and had to get a little Moondancer. Here she is! I'm hoping to find Starsong at some point as well. So far I've only been able to find squirter versions of her...

There's a little bash on her hair but I'm not particularly fussed. I do think her simplified symbol is really cute.

I would like my username to be changed to Miniature Sheep, if that's possible. Thanks! :)

So it's been ages since I last posted any art on here, and I figure it's high time I estabished a good old fashioned art thread, which ought to hopefully encourage me to post art more regularly! (New Year's Resolution: Organisation!) To start things off, here's a sift through some of the Arena-friendly stuff from 2016!

First of all is something I actually started in 2013 and finished at the start of the year - feels good to finally have it done. :D

And the rest are under a spoiler because there's quite a few images...

Spoiler
A couple of canvas patches - still getting the hang of fabric painting. Apparently someone liked the first one enough to give it a home so it's living in Australia now! :D

A dream garden, possibly a bit overly inspired by Tara MacPherson.

A spooky mixtape - this one was recorded on a gorgeous transparent violet tape; haven't managed to find any more of those since but I live in hope! The first side is fun and lively, the second side is a mixture of more moody and laid-back vibes.

And another spooky mixtape with a mixture of mysterious and grouchy vibes throughout.

A very tropical bay - the concept of this is going to worked into an inlay card for a beachy mixtape when I get round to recording it!

A diary doodle about my cat getting in touch with her inner Mighty Feline Warrior with a fluffy pink catnip mouse (it was simultaneously hilarious and adorable)

Off Topic / Unicorn tablet case spotted!
« on: August 15, 2016, 04:52:58 AM »
Not quite a pony but pretty close! (The eyes to my mind have a bit of a G1-ish look to them)
So I've been looking for a soft case for ages, as the hard one is all fine and dandy except for that it tends to get jostled about while I'm walking, so I'm wary of the tablet getting bashed about by the very thing that's meant to be protecting it! Well I nipped into Tesco to get some boring bits this morning and found... a unicorn tablet case! Fun in the midst of boring things! Also part of the proceeds go to a good cause, so that was the decision made for me right away. The only downside is that it's closer to 8 inches than 7, but ever the stubborn problem solver, I found that wrapping a cloth around the tablet before putting it in the case gets it to fit in there okay without sliding about everywhere. I will not be defeated!

It even has a plush horn!

And stars! (Obviously just a coincidence but last night was the first night in ages that was clear enough for stargazing, so naturally I took that as a sign from the universe.)

The resident unicorns have gathered to carry out a thorough inspection...

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

... and discovered an impromptu stowaway!

So all in all, it's been a pretty good day so far - not just because of this but the weather has been nice as well, and there just seems to be some unexplainable positive energy down this neck of the woods at the moment. I hope all you other pony peeps are having a good day too!

Pony Corral / Time to rescue the Struwwelpony!
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:47:45 AM »
Well, I've been putting it off since November but the time finally came to deal with the tangled mess that was Fizzy's hair. I cleaned her body immediately when she arrived because she was covered in what looked like a whole garden but the hair was something else entirely. She was one of those "evilbay listing with one blurry, tiny photo and no info about condition" jobs, so this is what I ended up having to deal with...

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Clearly she'd been taking styling tips from Cousin It!

After a wash and a de-tangle...

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

But what about the final result?! Well...

Spoiler
Ta-da! One tidy pony! I slightly flubbed it with wrapping her hair to dry, hence the little wave, but at least she's not a complete mess anymore!

Now I know there are considerably worse hair nightmares out there but as a beginner, this little venture certainly helped to boost my pony-tidying confidence. :D

Off Topic / Let's talk languages!
« on: December 04, 2015, 09:47:22 AM »
I've been learning Esperanto for a couple of months now and am having a great time with it; initially my aim was to build up some confidence after hitting a wall with Polish a while back (I am now raring to get back into it) but it turned out to be good fun! Hungarian is also on my to-do list and I'd love to take up Spanish, partly so I can read Jorge Luis Borges's poetry as it was originally intended (the English translations are rockin' but they flow so much better in Spanish)
So, who else on here is studying additional languages? Which ones are you learning? Which are your favourites? Let's get linguistic! XD

Pony Brag Arena / At long last!
« on: October 11, 2015, 03:23:43 AM »
It took a lot of patience, perserverance and mild exasperation but I finally got Moondancer! She was the last pony on my want list, I very nearly got a fixer-upper a few months ago but the sale fell through, then I took a break from pony-hunting for a while. As luck would have it, just when I decided to start searching again, this beautiful specimen turned up, so it all worked out alright in the end!

Pony Corral / Any tips on drying ponies after a bath?
« on: March 26, 2015, 07:40:46 AM »
My ponies are long overdue for a spa day but I'm worried about water getting trapped in their bodies and causing nasty problems. It's my first time attempting this so I'd like to do a decent job of it. What would be the best/safest way for me to dry them?
Thanks! :)

Arts & Crafts Corral / A little bit of art
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:49:19 PM »
It's been a while since I last posted any art on here, so I figured it'd be best to start with a little bit of pony art!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

There goes Taproot himself, trying out some different ideas of how to stylise ponies.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And a Unicom, a sub-species of unicorn I initially came up with as a joke but have since taken a shine to. Their entire vibe is light, airy, surreal humour, so they're good for unwinding on *challenging days*.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And finally... somewhere in the dark and nasty regions, where nobody goes, stands my take on the intro to Trap Door! This was a fun challenge seeing as I'm pants at drawing castles/haunted houses, but seeing as my heart belongs to spooky things, it's a skill I need to continue working on.

Pony Brag Arena / New ponies!
« on: January 15, 2015, 03:03:34 AM »
So this week I've had a couple of successes in the wilds of evilbay, finally being reunited with a childhood friend and getting a new pony who I just fell in love with at first sight! Here they are...

Ta-da!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Majesty has had a quick clean and I'm intending to spruce up her hair later. She also needs a little bit of sunfading as her head is *slightly* discoloured but other than that, she's amazing! (A major breath of fresh air after all the baity ones that were knocking about!)

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And Silver Glow, whom I've decided to call PJ, as my other G3s are named after his best friends (Sadie and Ryan) [from a sort of loosely-defined story I've been doing for years] so it seemed like a logical progression. His tail is a little on the anaemic side, so I'm thinking of making a new one for him, maybe to match his hair rather than just being white.

But having a small amount of work cut out aside... these two make me want to squee! :D

Pony Corral / Hmm, that unicorn looks familiar!

I stopped by WH Smith earlier and found these novelty slippers with some very interesting artwork on them... The text obscured by the horn is "Unusual Unicorn"! XD
