Also is that a baby dragon? (Green figure that comes with the boombox)
It's also sad to see the movie cast isn't returning for this series. I expected it for Sunny's and Hitch's VAs, but not for Izzy. Kimiko Glenn was in Orange is the New Black and Centaurworld, after all.
Oh no.... I was excited when I heard about the 2D series because I thought it would be in the artstyle that a lot of the merch and the advent calendar used. This is awful. What did they do to Hitch's head?? I do appreciate that Sunny's alicorn form wasn't permanent, but I wish the same could be said for the rainbow streak in her mane. It works in the alicorn form, but as an earth pony, she looks overdesigned. It's also sad to see the movie cast isn't returning for this series. I expected it for Sunny's and Hitch's VAs, but not for Izzy. Kimiko Glenn was in Orange is the New Black and Centaurworld, after all. Oh well, atleast the 3D series still sounds promising. Plus, thePollyPony Pockets are cute. I am on board with SweetLemons, though. Where's our brushables? :(
omg good catch LadyM! That totally IS Posey! :O
But um yeah, I'm with LAW on this one, I'm gonna pass. My other collections are high-fiving each other and going "hooray, more money to spend on us!" :P Really not a fan of that art style at all, eesh...
Ugh. Why aren't ponies allowed to look like ponies anymore? Y'know, like horses? EQUINES?? They look like brachycephalic.
Petite ponies are closest in size! They can fit in a Polly Pocket case (at least the bigger compacts) but due to being horse-shaped instead of person-shaped, and having a wider base, they can't interact with a lot of features (sitting in chairs, riding the elevators, fitting on couches, etc.)

(This set isn't real Polly Pocket, it's a modern imitator, but I think the dolls are the same size as original Polly.)

I'm tired of the "CalArts" bean mouth style, too. I'm not usually one to complain about it but it's getting really old, especially that damn bean cheek head shape. It just looks weird on ponies. :/ The style itself isn't inherently bad, I just miss when there was more variety in art styles for cartoons. It doesn't even really use bean mouth though, I mean... it kind of does in places, but not as much as other shows. Also, bean mouth isn't CalArts, I mean technically nothing is, unless it outright came from that location - it's basically just used to describe whatever style whoever is speaking doesn't like (not saying you're doing that, but it's what people do.)
The mouth looks pretty beany to me.Fair enough, sorry if I came across as too aggressive, and in fairness, I did say that it still has that style in places, but I still see a distinct difference between this and the usual bean mouth style.
Also note that I put CalArts in quotes there... to convey that it's the usual moniker for such a style. Never said I approve of the nickname myself.
It's true there's always been trends in cartoons, but the bean mouth one is a pretty pervasive one and it's one I'm getting sick of.
the animation style looks like centaur world which like, the style WORKED for centaur world but uh. yeah.
on a better note those i frikin love those teeny pony sets oh my god. i thought i was gonna be able to avoid spending money on G5 stuff but i guess not dfhjdsffsd
I haven't enjoyed pony offerings since G3. I humored my husband and picked out Fluttershy for him to buy during the G4 times. I mean, if he HAD to get a G4, at least she was a pegasus and yellow. I loathe G5. They look like Steve Carell with those eyebrows.
Also is that a baby dragon? (Green figure that comes with the boombox)
It is! His name is Sparky! He's adorable
Anyways as cute as the Polly Pocket theme is, it doesn't look like there are any brushable offerings for this year, confirming my suspicions that brushables have been phased out entirely for molded mane action figures andLOL Surprise rejectsmini figurines. Looks like my pony collecting days are over, I'm not interested in any of this stuff. If Hasbro would continue putting out products of similar quality to the Fashion Style Izzy and Sunny I would have gladly continued collecting G5 stuff but this? Yeah y'all can keep it.
Doubtful. I don't think Hasbro US knows anything about the stuff in the UK now, even if they once did.
Is the Netflix show gonna look like this or the movie?Neither. It's just a Youtube spinoff thingy they're doing.
Holy Beanmouth, Batman! :0

Closer to the movie, although with some reductions in quality to make it cheaper.

Why does Hitch have a human nose on a flat face instead of a snout? And umm.. pony legs don't work like that....
To be fair, it may not be a cheap thing, but like a creative decision thing? Like it fits the narrative of the spin off itself?
Is that Pipp's hind leg? Yeah, I think I see what you're getting at - I didn't look at it before, but yeah, I can see what you're getting at.To be fair, it may not be a cheap thing, but like a creative decision thing? Like it fits the narrative of the spin off itself?
No offense but have you seen the hind leg? There is no rhyme or reason as to how it bends, looking like a repurposed front leg. Izzy's are questionable as well, her right front leg is not connecting to the torso the same way the left one does. It looks rushed and undefined and like the animator wasn't paid enough or didn't get enough time to work out these kinks, hence "cheap". As in "no money".
I think back to what Flash animators did with Mattel's Ever After High. The studio only used 2D puppets but it looked gorgeous:

I was mainly defending Pony Life, but thanks for being respectful with your explanation. I do see what you mean, I think, but also feel that this style could work (and does sort of), but... yeah... it probably would have worked better with more time, or whatever.Pony Life looks a lot better than this. I'm not a big fan of chibi styles, but atleast it was cute and you could easily tell each main character's personality through the stylization. This just looks lazy, like it was the bare minimum they could have possibly done. What makes it even more frustrating is that G5 already has a 2D style that would probably look very lovely animated.

I'm SO excited for the game :DSame here! I can't wait to get ahold of official models of the characters (besides Pipp, since we already got one of her).
I got an interesting email
I don't know if this has been posted before so sorry if its already up.

Nope, still looks awful. The crab is drawn better then they are. I wonder if Misty was a mistake, or if they're adding a new character, or subtracting Zipp?

Zipp stays. She has the most high profile actor. There was an unnamed blue unicorn shown in the Mini World Maretime Bay set, maybe that's her? Since the sets seem to be characters we have names for so far (at least the small one. Brighthouse maybe a little different).

Sunny's lighthouse has been revamped is now called Crystal Brighthouse. The new Golden Oaks Library, if you will.
I thought it was very cute! Someone in a server I'm in pointed out that Izzy looks like a Shire, Pipp a Shetland, Sunny a Section C horse, and Zipp a Thoroughbred. I thought that was a very cute comparison.
The episodes are really fun. I think the faces are really funny and there's a lot of good reactions. I dislike when they just gasp and laugh at each other, though, they did that in the Zipp Flight episode and I really didn't like that. Pipp is the perfect character for me. Annoying and vain <3
I thought it was cute, and it was way better and more "story-ish" than I expected. Zipp and Pipp continue to be my favorites, I love them.
ALSO, I'm so pleased that Thunder (the green guard) showed up because it makes me think we might get a toy of him someday. We got a clear view of his symbol, too! It's a chesspiece, a knight. Zoom Zephyrwing (blue guard) has a castle symbol that resembles a rook. I wonder if they're siblings.

It's probably a coincidence, but I want to believe this is Seashell. Or like, her daughter.

Body, hair, and eyes are the right color, she has a tail ribbon and that's also the right color. Her symbol is a seashell + 2 stars. She doesn't have a white blaze but does have white leg markings.

Why does Hasbro hate horses?
Why does Hasbro hate horses?
I think kids these days just think horses are ugly and wouldn't be interested in toys or cartoons portraying them realistically, which is why for more than a decade now Hasbro has been doing everything they can to make ponies look as close to humans as possible in order to make them more appealing to modern kids. If you ask me, it is long horselike muzzles that make ponies truly cute.
MLP is interesting because if we're judging by the heads, G1 and G3 are the horsiest gens, very faithful, slightly anthro, interpretation of a horse's head. But if we're judging by the bodies, G2 and G5 are the horsiest gens--being the ponies with the thinnest, longest legs compared to their bodies and with distinct hooves.
G4 isn't horsey at all with their toys, but their movements are pretty horsey in their show. I remember in early seasons they'd sometimes dub in whinneys over their dialogue, that was cute.
Oh yeah, I forgot about Dream Beauties . . . Yeah, they were very literally horses, except with slightly larger eyes than a real horse. Their mouths were very literally horsey which personally I thought was a bad choice, they look depressed because real horses don't smile.
I guess my take is I think a Dream Beauty is a beautiful toy to put on a shelf or decorate your dresser, but wouldn't be very fun to play with. They're too big, their bodies are way more fragile than a "regular" MLP (any gen) and they just have less personality. To me they are more like statuettes than toys.

I remember in early seasons they'd sometimes dub in whinneys over their dialogue, that was cute.I can see that. I think they got better when they were show accurate (yes, I know the toyline is the "main thing" for MLP), but I remember seeing some of the G4 toys around the time I first got into the show (which was 2011, so they were likely at least relatively new) and they looked more like deer than anything, in my opinion.
My impression was Breyers are more to be collected by older kids (and adults. Aren't they pretty spendy? Except, like, the little Stablemates sets. But those are small.
I dunno. I don't remember ever seeing Breyers in Toys R Us, K-Mart, etc growing up, so to me they always seemed more like a specialty collectible than something to trot around and play with. (Maybe they were in TRU and I just didn't pay attention, that's also possible.) Also the fact that they're anatomically correct. Which I don't mind at all, I mean they ARE literal horses. But I feel like if they were aimed at eight year olds you'd have that certain kind of mom clutching their pearls.
Their pearl necklaces, that is. Not the horse's pearls. :P

Ohh, nice catch, LM! Considering "Posey Bloom," I would be surprised if this girl was not at least inspired by Seashell.
Don't be reasonable Bubble Tea. They'll give her a much more indicative name like Glitter Flower, or Dazzle-rina-Sweetiekins.
;)
So what did you guys think? It's not as bad as I expected. The character puppets still look weird and jarring, and, with the legs, it's honestly even worse in motion. However, the backgrounds are pretty and do make up for it a bit. The new voices aren't too bad either.
She looked better in G1.
I think she's very cute :)Me too. I love her hairstyle, and I really love that she kept her tail bow. TYT is much better than I thought it would be. Plus, the song from this episode was kind of a bop. :frolic:
She is gorgeous!
If you mean more pics of g3 concept art then there are quite a few here, taken from I think a now-defunct tumblr blog of one of the concept artists. It's where I first learned about g3 Firefly:

G3 Majesty is so pretty and the merpony designs are cute. Though I'm confused that the artist is talking about G3 when G2 was right around the corner.

I think it's because what we now consider G2 wasn't really considered "real" mlp by hasbro at the time. All the designing and stuff was done by Kenner, it just so happened that Hasbro bought Kenner out and decided to slap the mlp branding onto it. G3 was probably treated as the proper franchise reboot internally. Which would also help to explain why Hasbro usually forgets about G2 even now.
She looked better in G1.
Agreed. That human face is too gross.
I do feel like all the G2 MLP stuff is misfiled at Hasbro and that's why they never remember it. They probably have a big file labeled MLP and the G2 stuff is in a file called "Kenner."

Notice at 4:46 the cast lineup. "Misty" instead of "Zip Storm"..?
Seeing them animated makes it look better than in the earlier stills IMO.
Not bad. Wonder who the green and pink haired pony is?We think that's actually Posey, since she has the same ponytail as her TYT counterpart.
They're making a Marmaduke movie?! :tellme:
*cough* I mean, the ponies look really good there!
Is that Andrea libman voicing Izzy in the hasbro promo video? What video?
(It's weird when your two cameo characters are more eye catching than the mane six. XD )

So Posey is the new villain... sorta? Or some level of nay-sayer, anyway. Dunno how I feel about that. :\
One thing I really do like is them using Hitch to break some gender stereotypes in children's media. I like the idea that the male character is the one who likes animals and also is taking care of a baby, which are usually characteristics reserved only for female roles in cartoons. It's a small thing but I think it's important.
A new three-minute preview is up.
Imo the animation and lighting are not so great, but I do like the new voices.

I know it's just a fact of G5 and it's not going away, but I can't help how annoyed I am each time I see TV's and social media influencers in a MLP cartoon. :really:
But on the bright side, the opening song was cute and I love that dark-colored unicorn in the background at the 3:19 timestamp! Wish we got a toy of her~ I love non-pastel MLP toys.
Sorry, I just went to go look at her again (call me obsessed lol) and I realize I wrote the wrong timestamp yesterday lol. D'oh! She's at 2:08. Man I might have to hire someone and get a custom made of her...
I'm tired of the pegasus all having short manes. Its super sucky. Is that the direction that G5 is heading? I hadn't noticed it, but yeah, it would be good to spice things up with more variety.
