Just when I was getting used to New Generation, Hasbro had to go and do this. Ugly Pony Life 2: Electric Boogaloo. Effort and beauty continues to be lost with MLP. You suck hasbroken.  :nope:  :throw:

I will say that the Polly pocket sets are cute.

*SCREAMS TO THE HEAVENS*  Polly Pocket but for ponies!  Polly Pocket but for ponies!  Polly Pocket but for ponies!

I have only wanted this FOREVER

Also is that a baby dragon? (Green figure that comes with the boombox)

Would you mind if I shared these pics on my pony blog?

It is! His name is Sparky! He's adorable

Anyways as cute as the Polly Pocket theme is, it doesn't look like there are any brushable offerings for this year, confirming my suspicions that brushables have been phased out entirely for molded mane action figures and LOL Surprise rejects mini figurines. Looks like my pony collecting days are over, I'm not interested in any of this stuff. If Hasbro would continue putting out products of similar quality to the Fashion Style Izzy and Sunny I would have gladly continued collecting G5 stuff but this? Yeah y'all can keep it.

OMG the polly pocket-like playsets, I need ALL OF IT!!!

I'm fine with the drawing style for the series, it's quirky :) I like quirky.

Also, maybe I've missed something somewhere, but isn't february too early to say there'll be no new brushables this year? (like, obviously unless this is a fact, in which case that's too bad. )

But um yeah, I'm with LAW on this one, I'm gonna pass. My other collections are high-fiving each other and going "hooray, more money to spend on us!" :P Really not a fan of that art style at all, eesh...

I'll judge it more when I see it in action, there's only a split second of it more or less, so I can't really see what I think of it.  From the picture, it's kind of flat, but I'll see what I think of the show.

Sometimes style looks better when it's animated - Pony Life had a simplistic-ish style, but I still found it cute and it fitted the show, so it's not really a deal-breaker.  It's also possible they want to just do a simpler thing for YouTube, and have a... more refined style (I don't want to say "more effort" because a simplistic style doesn't always mean "no effort", it can be as stylistic choice.)

To be honest, I tend to give all kinds of animation a chance, it has to be a really "bad" version of (insert animation style here) to make it lose points for me, and even then it can still be saved by the "good" points of the subject (good and bad being based on my own opinion, of course) - I'll admit, from the picture it doesn't look the best, but I'd need to see them actually doing more things, and appear longer.

Oh no.... I was excited when I heard about the 2D series because I thought it would be in the artstyle that a lot of the merch and the advent calendar used. This is awful. What did they do to Hitch's head?? I do appreciate that Sunny's alicorn form wasn't permanent, but I wish the same could be said for the rainbow streak in her mane. It works in the alicorn form, but as an earth pony, she looks overdesigned. It's also sad to see the movie cast isn't returning for this series. I expected it for Sunny's and Hitch's VAs, but not for Izzy. Kimiko Glenn was in Orange is the New Black and Centaurworld, after all. Oh well, atleast the 3D series still sounds promising. Plus, the Polly Pony Pockets are cute. I am on board with SweetLemons, though. Where's our brushables? :(

Fortunately the animation for the webisodes is not the same as the animation for the Netflix series . . . The Netflix series is going to be 3D animation from Atomic Cartoons studio.

The webisode style does look cheap but for what it's worth I do like it more than Pony Life, lol.  But yeah, I MUCH prefer the style that we've seen on the stickers that come with the G5 toys.

It's also sad to see the movie cast isn't returning for this series. I expected it for Sunny's and Hitch's VAs, but not for Izzy. Kimiko Glenn was in Orange is the New Black and Centaurworld, after all.

I was hoping Kimiko Glenn would stay on too!  But I think she's American . . . It looks like the production is in Vancouver, BC, so probably all Canadian VAs.

I think they'll continue making brushables.  They're hyping the Pony Pockets a lot because it's a new concept.  "Here's a pony with brushable hair" isn't really a concept that needs explaining when it comes to MLP.  Like, I don't think they ever posted promos for the glittery-winged 6" brushables but obviously they exist.  And we know a G5 brushable 6" Twilight Sparkle and Sunny set is coming.

Edit:  Also this definitely isn't the whole line because the blurb is like "Buy even MORE of the Cutie Mark Magic ponies!", but they only show one set of them.   (The Cutie Mark Magic ponies appear to have a regular painted cutie mark on one side and a removable 3D one on the other.)

To start with the positive, I adore the Polly Pocket style ponies! Omg I will need to collect them all! I’m also happy the Netflix series will keep the 3D style, I think the models are so cute! I’m a little sad the voices will be recast, but once we’re used to them Im sure they will be fine! I just hope they don’t cast Izzy’s voice as being too high and zany like they did with Pinkie Pie.

I know the YouTube webisodes probably have a tight budget but yuck, I really do not like that 2D art style. :X I was never one to be bothered by the “Cal Arts style” but good lord it has gotten overused. I’m sick of floating bean mouths. I’m sick of the weird flat noses to make everything look like an emoji. I’m sick of the over simplistic stylization of cartoons. I want to see some pretty art again. :( These models look especially flat and boring to me, they have no real distinct silhouette.

I’m going to be somewhat controversial and say I liked the style of the Pony Life cartoons better than this style. Even though they had pretty much all the same issues noted above, they were distinct enough that I liked them. The sparkly eyes and super chibi portions gave them some character. Maybe though, it’s just the fact I didn’t love G4s art style to begin with. Maybe what I’m feeling for the G5 2D animation is how G4 fans felt when they saw the normal artstyle converted.

Ahh I'm not the biggest fan of that art style, it kind of looks a bit wonky but for a budget YouTube exclusive webseries I'm not too upset, they'll probably look nicer in motion and it'll be nice to have something to tide us over until the 3D series which I'm also honestly expecting to look somewhat wonky given how uncanny budget 3D can be sometimes  :work:

The mini sets are cute but they don't seem that appealing imo

I wouldn't say she looks over designed. Plenty of older earth ponies have 3 or 4 stripes in their hair. It's better then the overused hot pink/purple. At least one has 5, and one has 6.

Wow. They really did it. They made an MLP artstyle that looks worse than Pony Life. :X.

What's with Hasbro's obsession with making ponies look strung out?  Not to mention how eye-bleedingly oversaturated the colors are.

Why does Hitch have a human nose on a flat face instead of a snout? And umm.. pony legs don't work like that....

I honestly don't mind the so-called "CalArts" style, I think shows like Steven Universe, SVTFOE, and Gravity Falls make it work well with their own unique art directions. This just looks poorly done and like a cheap imitation of what Hasbro thinks is popular now.

I honestly drew better ponies when I was 13.

The art style looks like something a 2nd grader drew so I'm not impressed at all with it and won't be wasting any time watching it.

The "Pony Pocket" sets I will reserve judgement on until I see them in person.  I haven't collected anything from G5 as of yet because of space issues and being generally unimpressed with the toyline.  I mean, the larger "styling size" ones are okay (hate the "regular" sized ones--they look like Happy Meal toys) but as I don't have a ton of space, I'd rather reserve the space I do have for G1s, which I prefer as I grew up with them.  But maybe some tiny ones might be able to fit in with some of the Cutie Mark Crews I have on a tiny shelf if they are cute in person...

MLP Merch says they are called Mini World Magic and they are inspired by the "Tell Your Tale" series.

Petite ponies are closest in size!  They can fit in a Polly Pocket case (at least the bigger compacts) but due to being horse-shaped instead of person-shaped, and having a wider base, they can't interact with a lot of features (sitting in chairs, riding the elevators, fitting on couches, etc.)

(This set isn't real Polly Pocket, it's a modern imitator, but I think the dolls are the same size as original Polly.)

I'm tired of the "CalArts" bean mouth style, too. I'm not usually one to complain about it but it's getting really old, especially that damn bean cheek head shape. It just looks weird on ponies. :/ The style itself isn't inherently bad, I just miss when there was more variety in art styles for cartoons.

It doesn't even really use bean mouth though, I mean... it kind of does in places, but not as much as other shows.  Also, bean mouth isn't CalArts, I mean technically nothing is, unless it outright came from that location - it's basically just used to describe whatever style whoever is speaking doesn't like (not saying you're doing that, but it's what people do.)

And there's plenty of variety in cartoons, pretty much everything I see has it's own style - the only similarity is is when they are using the same kind of art style, and even then, they usually tend to look different from each other, and have their own identity.  Also, most decades that I've seen (going as far back as the 80s, but it may be even further) had specific styles that could at least be cherry picked as "looking the same", and today's animation is no different - there's stuff that can be compared, but there is, and always will be variety.

The mouth looks pretty beany to me.

Also note that I put CalArts in quotes there... to convey that it's the usual moniker for such a style. Never said I approve of the nickname myself.

It's true there's always been trends in cartoons, but the bean mouth one is a pretty pervasive one and it's one I'm getting sick of.

CalArts is a very popular term in the cartoon lexicon now. Gonna be hard to get it out of people.

The YouTube series should have at least 70 episodes according to a Kid screen article: https://kidscreen.com/2022/02/18/hasbro-saddles-up-new-my-little-pony-content/

Fair enough, sorry if I came across as too aggressive, and in fairness, I did say that it still has that style in places, but I still see a distinct difference between this and the usual bean mouth style.

Again, fair enough, but I'm ultimately okay with any art style, so it needs to do something really "wrong" for me not to like it.

I get not liking stylistic choices, but I don't think I've seen a 2D cartoon in the past five years that hasn't been accused of being "CalArts style".  Even shows with wildly different styles.  I honestly don't know what it's supposed to mean.  It can't mean "bean mouth" because people said the new She-Ra show was CalArts style and it didn't have that style of mouth.

Edit:  Never mind about the 2D qualifier, as I just came across someone calling the 3D He-Man show CalArts style. (I was googling the term to make sure I'm not crazy, lol.)  Apparently He-Man is CalArts style because "he got desexualized and his muscles aren't as defined any more".

That's a relief. I am tired of spin-offs getting the cheapo treatment. G4 made them a lot of money and they can put some of that in G5's quality. A crazy idea, I know!

To be fair, it may not be a cheap thing, but like a creative decision thing?  Like it fits the narrative of the spin off itself?

I mean, I look at Pony Life for example, and yes, it has a simple style, but it doesn't really feel cheap in my opinion.  It feels more like they went with an art style that fits the format of what they were trying to do, and the format of Pony Life is "the lighter side", so it makes sense for it to be childishly cute, or whatever.  I mean, I think I'd actually have liked some of the latter episodes of FiM better if they were done in Pony Life style, because they fitted that format better in my opinion.

No offense but have you seen the hind leg? There is no rhyme or reason as to how it bends, looking like a repurposed front leg. Izzy's are questionable as well, her right front leg is not connecting to the torso the same way the left one does. It looks rushed and undefined and like the animator wasn't paid enough or didn't get enough time to work out these kinks, hence "cheap". As in "no money".

I think back to what Flash animators did with Mattel's Ever After High. The studio only used 2D puppets but it looked gorgeous:

I was mainly defending Pony Life, but thanks for being respectful with your explanation.  I do see what you mean, I think, but also feel that this style could work (and does sort of), but... yeah... it probably would have worked better with more time, or whatever.

I was mainly defending Pony Life, but thanks for being respectful with your explanation.  I do see what you mean, I think, but also feel that this style could work (and does sort of), but... yeah... it probably would have worked better with more time, or whatever.
Pony Life looks a lot better than this. I'm not a big fan of chibi styles, but atleast it was cute and you could easily tell each main character's personality through the stylization. This just looks lazy, like it was the bare minimum they could have possibly done. What makes it even more frustrating is that G5 already has a 2D style that would probably look very lovely animated.

Still not a fan of the style and haven't been since it's use for Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball (I think there was a show before those who used the style but I don't remember it).

Luckily I won't get to watch this incarnation of MLP either lol.

The phrase "a forty year old brand" leaped out of the Youtube window to punch me directly in the face.

It can't REALLY have been forty years, right?  (omg it's been forty years.)

Okay, so the Youtube show will have 5 minute long segments, which makes me feel even more that it's purpose is to replace commercials, because it seems like kids don't watch TV as much as they used to. I agree that they look better in motion. The part with the crab attacking the model gave me Rescue Bots vibes.

I've seen articles saying Zipp's voice in Make Your Mark will be Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.  So is Bahia Watson ("Misty") in Tell Your Tale a renamed Zipp with a different VA, or a new pony?  Interesting!

Also, "Crystal Brighthouse" has to be a playset, right?  God I hope so, I love lighthouses.

Edit: So I went googling around to try to figure out if Make Your Mark had a different set of voice actors than Tell Your Tale, and it seems like the same VAs for both shows.  I also found this clip on Variety's Twitter:

https://twitter.com/Variety/status/1498861299421220866

To summarize: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan confirms she's the voice of Zipp and says Hasbro had "the most strict NDA ever".  She also says "there's so much content, there's a Youtube series, there's a proper CGI animated series, there's hour long specials . . ." Which to me implies that she is playing Zipp in all of those.

I've been trying to figure out why Hasbro didn't list her in the "Ignite" segment and all I can come up with is that, since she has a pretty popular Netflix sitcom, Hasbro wants her to be a "surprise" for future hype segments.  (IMO this is also why they didn't show any clips from the 3D show.)

Zipp stays. She has the most high profile actor. There was an unnamed blue unicorn shown in the Mini World Maretime Bay set, maybe that's her? Since the sets seem to be characters we have names for so far (at least the small one. Brighthouse maybe a little different).

Ahhh goodness, I really do not like that 2D art style in motion either but it's not the main show so I don't mind. It's just 5 minute shorts and the mini sets are cute enough to make me look past that the show just looks stilted and awkward.

30 minutes per episode for the main series seems a bit much to swallow, I really liked FiM's serialized and fantasy aspects (not a popular opinion here I think) so I really hope we see more of that alongside the shorts. Also absolutely delighted that Zipp is keeping her movie VA! 500 minutes of animation is a huge amount to, here's hoping it's good! Looking forward for that main series release  :frolic: (I may also want to know what's happened to some of FiM's lose ends, very strange that Ruler of Equestria Twilight is just no longer around and that very few people remember her and her friends)

EDIT: Make your Mark kind of reminds me of G4.5's Pony Life if it was running at the same time as FiM which is welcome I think, I like Pony Life but I think I would have liked it more if it wasn't the 'follow up' to FiM

So what did you guys think? It's not as bad as I expected. The character puppets still look weird and jarring, and, with the legs, it's honestly even worse in motion. However, the backgrounds are pretty and do make up for it a bit. The new voices aren't too bad either.

I thought it was very cute! Someone in a server I'm in pointed out that Izzy looks like a Shire, Pipp a Shetland, Sunny a Section C horse, and Zipp a Thoroughbred. I thought that was a very cute comparison.

The episodes are really fun. I think the faces are really funny and there's a lot of good reactions. I dislike when they just gasp and laugh at each other, though, they did that in the Zipp Flight episode and I really didn't like that. Pipp is the perfect character for me. Annoying and vain <3

I thought the episodes were cute! I’m still not a huge fan of the art style, but it works for what the shorts are! If we’re getting a ton of little 5 minute shoes every we it makes sense they’d want something simple to animate. It’s not so bad in motion.

Overall I think the new voices work well too! There were a few moments where I felt Izzy was bordering on being too Pinkie Pie-ish, but hopefully they keep her somewhat grounded. :P I like her as being an eccentric creative, please don’t just make her the hyper annoying friend! I’m always happy to see new pony content, so I’ll be watching the shorts as they come out, even if they are a little silly! It’s a good way to see more of the characters between the “big” releases.

ALSO, I'm so pleased that Thunder (the green guard) showed up because it makes me think we might get a toy of him someday.  We got a clear view of his symbol, too!  It's a chesspiece, a knight.  Zoom Zephyrwing (blue guard) has a castle symbol that resembles a rook.  I wonder if they're siblings.

Why does Hasbro hate horses?

I think kids these days just think horses are ugly and wouldn't be interested in toys or cartoons portraying them realistically, which is why for more than a decade now Hasbro has been doing everything they can to make ponies look as close to humans as possible in order to make them more appealing to modern kids. If you ask me, it is long horselike muzzles that make ponies truly cute.

I disagree. Horse toys have been popular for far longer then MLP has been around.

*Points to Breyer, Schleich,Grand Champions, Fashion Star Fillies, Safari Ltd. CollectA, and all the YouTube channels both kid and adult that show off their collections, and does reviews and tutorials *

Breyers has Breyerfest, and people take themselves and their horse crazy kids to Kentucky

Now not all kids are gonna be into them, because different interests, but this is clearly a Hasbro problem.

I don't think Hasbro or kids have anything against horses - I've never seen any official statements that kids find horses ugly.

Also, people always take this the wrong way, so I am taking a risk here, but I feel that I can tell that most generation styles of MLP are ponies, some more cartoony than others, but I can tell what they are supposed to be - the only times I felt they didn't look like ponies was Newborn Cuties, some of the colts and I think all of the babies in G4, and at least the toys for G4.5 - Pony Life itself might be fine, but I may have just gotten used to them by then, but the toylines looked more like cats to me, at least at first.)

G1-G3 have a more realistic equine approach, but I feel everything else that I didn't say looks enough like ponies, just cartoony versions of them.

On the show, I am going to watch it, so I'll see what I think of it.  I am feeling positive about the art style for the most part, like I see the potential in it - it's not the best style MLP has done, and there are flaws with it pointed out on this thread, and it kind of feels like each of the Mane Five was drawn by a different artist in a different style to me (personally I think Sunny looks the best drawn, where as Hitch and Zipp do not.)

Either way, I'll give it a chance and take what I like from it.   :)

Title: Re: I Bring You More G5 News

MLP is interesting because if we're judging by the heads, G1 and G3 are the horsiest gens, very faithful, slightly anthro, interpretation of a horse's head.  But if we're judging by the bodies, G2 and G5 are the horsiest gens--being the ponies with the thinnest, longest legs compared to their bodies and with distinct hooves.

G3 is the only gen that tried to make the baby ponies horsey, like at all.  Foals have tiny jellybean bodies and long long legs, so that's what they gave them. All other gens have baby ponies that have the proportions of like . . . dogs.  And whatever the Teeny Tiny ponies and Newborn Cuties were.  (*whispers* Abominations.)

G4 isn't horsey at all with their toys, but their movements are pretty horsey in their show.  I remember in early seasons they'd sometimes dub in whinneys over their dialogue, that was cute.

G4 isn't horsey at all with their toys, but their movements are pretty horsey in their show.  I remember in early seasons they'd sometimes dub in whinneys over their dialogue, that was cute.

I'll give you the legs. The Dream Beauties were the horsiest. I wonder why they didn't stick around long?

Oh yeah, I forgot about Dream Beauties . . . Yeah, they were very literally horses.  Even their mouths were very literally horsey which personally I thought was a bad choice, they look depressed because real horses don't smile.

I guess my take is I think a Dream Beauty is a beautiful toy to put on a shelf or decorate your dresser, but wouldn't be very fun to play with.  They're too big, their bodies are way more fragile than a "regular" MLP (any gen) and they just have less personality.  To me they are more like statuettes than toys.

Not so. Kids play with Breyers and FSF and other  (less sturdy) realistic horse toys like GC and KC. Although they're more for 7+.

I can see that.  I think they got better when they were show accurate (yes, I know the toyline is the "main thing" for MLP), but I remember seeing some of the G4 toys around the time I first got into the show (which was 2011, so they were likely at least relatively new) and they looked more like deer than anything, in my opinion.

My impression was Breyers are more to be collected by older kids (and adults.  Aren't they pretty spendy?  Except, like, the little Stablemates sets.  But those are small.

I dunno.  I don't remember ever seeing Breyers in Toys R Us, K-Mart, etc growing up, so to me they always seemed more like a specialty collectible than something to trot around and play with.  (Maybe they were in TRU and I just didn't pay attention, that's also possible.)  Also the fact that they're anatomically correct.  Which I don't mind at all, I mean they ARE literal horses.  But I feel like if they were aimed at eight year olds you'd have that certain kind of mom clutching their pearls.

Their pearl necklaces, that is.  Not the horse's pearls. :P

It's probably a coincidence, but I want to believe this is Seashell.  Or like, her daughter.

Body, hair, and eyes are the right color, she has a tail ribbon and that's also the right color.  Her symbol is a seashell + 2 stars.  She doesn't have a white blaze but does have white leg markings.

Ohh, nice catch, LM! Considering "Posey Bloom," I would be surprised if this girl was not at least inspired by Seashell.

AHHHHHHH FINALLY!!! IT'S HER!!!

you're right about the posey bloom thing. they're definitely bringing back g1 characters just *slightly* different, the same way they did with that secret ring series. If they ever decided to name her it'd probably be something like "Seashell Shores"

I think Conch Shell would be a nice name for her. She might end up in one of the Polly Pony Pocket playsets. Though I'd like to see her with a nice mane and tailful of Lucky Clover hair. Or if she has to be a moulded hair pony, they can use the same green that they used for Shutter Snap.

So what did you guys think? It's not as bad as I expected. The character puppets still look weird and jarring, and, with the legs, it's honestly even worse in motion. However, the backgrounds are pretty and do make up for it a bit. The new voices aren't too bad either.

I couldn't bring myself to watch the first ep to the finish. I just can't get over the artstyle and the animation isn't my cup of tea either. It's just that kind of paint-by-numbers "all cartoons look like this now" feeling I get when looking at it.
That's not to bash the animators, btw. Animation is a thankless industry. But I hate looking at it :P

And I gotta say, as someone who doesn't mind and even sometimes likes beanmouths... the beanmouths on the ponies look weird. Especially on Zipp, who is more angular. Beanmouth only really works when everything about the character is rounded. And don't get me started on the sidemouth beanmouths... it's like two kinds of mouth rolled into one terrible, annoying mouth.

Mouth.

I dunno if this is a coincidence or not, but I'm headcanoning her as G2 Sundance / Sun Sparkle.

There was also a pony who had G3 Minty's colors in this episode but alas, they never showed her symbol.  Sure wish they had symbols on both sides, at least in animation.

I think it's because what we now consider G2 wasn't really considered "real" mlp by hasbro at the time. All the designing and stuff was done by Kenner, it just so happened that Hasbro bought Kenner out and decided to slap the mlp branding onto it. G3 was probably treated as the proper franchise reboot internally. Which would also help to explain why Hasbro usually forgets about G2 even now.

The way I heard the story was that Kenner started designing a horse toy line before they were bought by Hasbro, who saw what they had already started and decided to go with it. I could totally be wrong though, that's just how I remember hearing it. :wonder:

Hasbro gave Kenner the Transformers line to revamp and I think they gave Kenner the MLP line at the same time.  A long time ago I stumbled across the blog of a former Kenner employee who talked about how they weren't thrilled about being absorbed into Hasbro and saw MLP / Transformers as a way to strut their stuff and kind of assert their independence. Which is why both reboots were radically different from the original toylines.

G2 MLP sold poorly, Beast Wars did great, so I guess they broke even.  (Beast Wars did have a state-of-the-art cartoon to help it along, maybe G2 MLP would have succeeded if it had had a cartoon.)

I do feel like all the G2 MLP stuff is misfiled at Hasbro and that's why they never remember it.  They probably have a big file labeled MLP and the G2 stuff is in a file called "Kenner."

I suspect something like this happened, too. I don't think it's really an intentional snub since they're clearly AWARE there was a second generation... I'm just not entirely sure they know what it was.

I only watched the Flight School episode and I thought it was fine, but I'm not really planning on watching more. The animation just kills me. Even if it was right up my alley, with the most epic storyline of fully fleshed out lore and plotlines with actual consequences... I just can't watch those little matchstick-leg ponies running and flying around with their little bean mouths popping on and off. None of their movements look natural or even possible. Which is fine, it fits the style of the show they're going for. Just not for me.

I do like that they gave every character a unique body shape, that's pretty cool. And I like that we're seeing more original characters that might become toys in the future. (I would totally buy a toy of the G1 Seashell look-alike!) Putting the cutie marks on only one side in the animation is really annoying, though.

Promo clip for MLP 2022 Youtube and Netflix series:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxHmGwM30Cg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxHmGwM30Cg)

Notice at 4:46 the cast lineup. "Misty" instead of "Zip Storm"..?

Seeing them animated makes it look better than in the earlier stills IMO.

This video was such a trip to watch! I'm with LadyMoondancer, hearing the 40 years felt like I was slapped upside the head.

That whole presentation gave me so many cringe feelings. I mean, I completely understand Hasbro is a major company and at the top of the toy industry. I know their goal is only to make money, but, man... that whole video just felt so sanitized and corporate. There was nothing "real" about what that woman was saying. It felt like I was watching an AI robot programmed to spout catchphrases. She couldn't say a single noun with a buzzword adjective in front of it.

I physically shuddered when she said that "TYT is specifically designed to take advantage of the YouTube algorithm." I mean it makes sense, since these are commercials and you want your commercial in front of as many people as possible. But it's just wild that this is a deciding factor in how you design a show these days. Can you imagine how much of our lives are being influenced by requirements such as these?

Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware that ALL merchandising is like that, not just MLP. I just don't watch a lot of these types of presentations, so it isn't something I've been exposed to a lot. It really is mind-blowing to look into the world of sales and marketing and see how they actually talk to each other.

I find it a smidge interesting how you can see different forms of media distribution changing between each generation of MLP. I've only been alive since just before G3 (and late G2) but G3 had direct to VHS/DVD short specials, G4 had a TV show released on DVDs and eventually moving to streaming services, G5's first content is a streaming service exclusive film and a YouTube webshow designed to tickle the algorithm. Everyone has to do the algorithm dance doing YouTube, for better or worse.

Wow, honestly . . . that looks pretty good!  I was bracing myself for gummi looking hair (like the 3D He-Man show, if anyone is familiar with that--no shade, I genuinely like the show, but the hair does look like claymation) but it actually looks pretty close to the movie??  And so do the character models.

I know the studio doing the Netflix show (Atomic Cartoons) is different from the one that did the movie (Boulder), but Boulder is a subsidiary of Hasbro, so I guess Hasbro made sure they had the right to use the 3D models elsewhere.

FiM was all like "Maybe we'll give you one background character a year that you could maybe say was inspired by a g1 character if you squint" while g5 is out here like "Here's some g1 characters. They just exist in the g5 universe. They have speaking roles and names. Here ya go."

It was about time. I was always wondering why Hasbro recycled all those Transformers names and designs to hell and back but would try and squeeze the last drop out of MLP.
If you use names and designs you already have you are doing less work and people are still happy.

Anybody remember that FiM episode with the spitting images of Toola Roola and Another G3 pony that escapes me... and they said their names and had dialogue. It was a complete one-time thing.

Oh yeah I do remember that! It was great! I wish they had chosen two different ponies, tho, because the simplicity of most FiM designs made the much-more-busy-and-colorful G3 designs really stand out in an odd way.

So Posey is the new villain... sorta? Or some level of nay-sayer, anyway. Dunno how I feel about that. :\

The plot seems okay. Watching the trailer on my cellphone, I thought the animation was jerky and stilted, but watching it on my home laptop now and it looks fine.

One thing I really do like is them using Hitch to break some gender stereotypes in children's media. I like the idea that the male character is the one who likes animals and also is taking care of a baby, which are usually characteristics reserved only for female roles in cartoons. It's a small thing but I think it's important.

Hmm, it looks really low budget. Animation looks worse than the trailer made it out to be. Most of the movements look stiff and the lip movements look really off.

I'll probably watch it anyway. The characters still seem charming enough and the voices are actually pretty good, but, that preview doesn't leave a good first impression on the visual quality, at least.

I was so excited to see Posey in G5, but I'm not liking the personality they seem to have given her - from what I've seen in the shorts and trailer.

One thing I really do like is them using Hitch to break some gender stereotypes in children's media. I like the idea that the male character is the one who likes animals and also is taking care of a baby, which are usually characteristics reserved only for female roles in cartoons. It's a small thing but I think it's important.

That really stood out to me as well!  And I agree with your thoughts about it.

A new three-minute preview is up.
Imo the animation and lighting are not so great, but I do like the new voices.

I know it's just a fact of G5 and it's not going away, but I can't help how annoyed I am each time I see TV's and social media influencers in a MLP cartoon. :really:

But on the bright side, the opening song was cute and I love that dark-colored unicorn in the background at the 3:19 timestamp! Wish we got a toy of her~ I love non-pastel MLP toys.

Oh yeah I see her now, that unicorn has very pretty colors.

Sorry, I just went to go look at her again (call me obsessed lol) and I realize I wrote the wrong timestamp yesterday lol. D'oh! She's at 2:08. Man I might have to hire someone and get a custom made of her...

If they make Posey a buzzkill/villain I'll be Team Posey all the way :P

That Tic Toc (Clip Clop?) thing Pipp had going on was annoying as hell. It's a horrible app with seemingly zero child protections. Stop advertising it to kids just because it's something they know exists.

I was mildly annoyed at G4 having cities and celebrities based on real world and I am not thrilled with G5 going even further and implementing social media and other websites, along with brand names. It's so unimaginative and empty and just serves to advertise and turn kids into consumers (and yeah I realize that's an ironic complaint as a collector). It doesn't feel like a magical world, it feels like "pony version of 202? USA".

agreed. especially the tiktok thing - yikes. social media like that is so unhealthy for everyone but especially young kids. i used tiktok for about a year (teenager) and during that time my mental health plummeted. deleted and got better. mlp may be corporate but surely there are better ways to appeal to kids than this.

Spoiler
also not to get too political on the my little pony forum (had to reread the rules lol) and this has been said many times already but the whole "woke" thing is kind of cringeworthy. yes, kids should definitely learn about civil rights and to treat people well, and the movie provides some subtle insights when it comes to this stuff (i agreed with a lot of firebrand's (yt) review of the movie) but selling merch with the word 'activist' on it.. ech. of course the giant capitalist corporation would want people to focus on identity politics and not the effects of class division. rainbow capitalism, yay! that being said, and slightly hypocritically, if they ever introduce a nonbinary character, i will get overly emotional.

also yeah the dark purple pony is beautiful !

New clip, with Posey

And another 4 and a half minute(!) one

Probably pretty pointless with it coming out tomorrow, but still.

Is that the direction that G5 is heading?  I hadn't noticed it, but yeah, it would be good to spice things up with more variety.

It's not the same, but I'll try and remember that when it comes to designing ponies.

(Side Note: I'm not sure when I'm going to be watching the G5 shows, so I'm going to at least try to avoid looking at stuff directly about them for now - that's for everyone, of course.)

I watched the new special as soon as it came out. I liked it. It certainly doesn't hold up to the movie, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

G5 Posey's cutie mark looks very similar to G1 Posey's.

Sorry I misread 'where' as 'what.'

The G5's only have cutie marks on one side. It's a bit weird.

I'm thinking I may not need to cut off the ball joint to replace a G5's tail. Just cut the hair and add smaller zip ties around the hank of the new one, then stuff it in. The size of the tail hole is generous, and I did something similar to a Grand Champion foal who has much harder plastic, and also a generous tail hole.
