I do believe most manga have age ratings like movies. Kaoskat  has a point there are many many genre of manga what are some of your daughters interest and things she likes to read about.

Vampire Knight is one I know. It should be fine for a 12 year old I would think. The violence is very mild really and the themes aren't anything that should really be a problem either. It's one of my favorites actually. It has been made into an anime too. If you wanted, I'm sure you could find a few episodes to watch online to get an idea of what it's like before buying it.

Vampire Knight is rated T+ (older teen)
However you can preview the manga here : http://www.vizmanga.com/reader/53
(Hopefully that link works. If not, search the title at viz manga)

Card Captor Sakura is a great series to introduce some common themes seen in anime and manga, and is a fantastic series in its own right and is very age appropriate.  The series was released a few years ago in 4 omnibus editions.  Here is a link to volume 1.

She might like
-fruit basket
-shugo chara
-mamotte lollipop (save me lollipop)
-tsubasa
-ouran high school host club

All titles under a similar genre that I read myself around that age when I was reading vampire knight.

Also someone aristocratic titles that she might like
-kuroshitsuji (black butler)
-Rosen maiden
-pandora hearts
-Alice in the country of hearts (this series is based of a dating game in Japan and has many spin off manga series with similar names)

I second cardcaptor sakura :D Its very appropriate for her age and gets addicting pretty quick.

There is an anime for it as well--actually the English version of it aired when I was a teenager so it goes to show it should be ok for a 12 year old :)

I don't know how accessible the manga is stateside, but Sailor Moon would be another great choice! They just rereleased the anime with updated subtitles and it's lovely!

Oh thanks for posting this! I didn't realize they re-released it- the originals got so expensive!

I second or third the recommendation for Cardcaptor Sakura!  Pretty, cute, sweet, good story and age appropriate-
