Kids and random pickyness!
« on: January 29, 2012, 04:36:35 PM »
So My Gennybean is 5 and somewhat more picky than my other daughter (but less picky than my DH, although he's less dramatic about it.)
Yesterday the drama was over...wait for it... I put macaroni and cheese on her plate and her chicken touched it! She also doesn't like beef stew but if I call it pot roast she wolfs it down. Chicken curry, no thank you. Chicken fried rice, yummy. SAME thing, different name will induce gagging and crying.
She even liked mac and cheese until this time and she's not a toddler anymore so I thought we'd be out of the food strikes by now!

Sounds like a kid. My nephew was just as obnoxious about food when he was little. Heck, my dad still is. Call food one thing and he eats it fine, call the same food something else and he gets all mad and won't touch it. Let's hope your daughter will grow out of it.

Had to smirk at this, If My son thinks beef is chicken, he will eat it, soon as it looks ever remotely like beef, he wont eat it! So have to use dishes where it is in disguise, lol and convince him its just a different part of the chicken, an hell eat. Kids are funny, and yes, hopefully theyll grow out of it in time!

Yup, the kid I babysit does that.  He goes through strange phases with food.

He used to love chicken nuggets, but not anymore!

My neice has to be the pickest kid ever!  She won't eat beef of any kind, certains food can't touch, and Lord help you if you cut something the wrong way.  Getting her to eat veggies is like pulling teeth.  We like to grind them up and hide them in things like spaghetti sauce. ;)

I find if your child likes pizza, get them to help add things, an then cover it with cheese! thats a good way I got my kids to eat things they normally wouldnt!

Call veggies things like "fairy mushrooms" and "magic carrots" - that fools kids into eating them.  And arrange things in heart or star shapes... I'm in my 20s and I still think things are more tasty when they're in special shapes!

OK, well not entirely relevant, but I absolutely love this blog - I could spend hours looking at the pretty sandwiches:  http://cookiecutterlunch.blogspot.co.nz/

It just takes patience and they should grow out of it. Most people have odd habits/rituals where food is concerned - my almost 52 year old mum has been known to cry if her fried egg leaks into her baked beans.

My brother was terribly picky when we were little - it was a nightmare! He didn't like anything nice so we all had to have stuff he would eat - which was so boring! He wouldn't eat meat loaf, but if my stepmum called it "sausage loaf" he loved it!!!

I think all kids go through this at some point. My almost 10 year old is still pretty picky and was terribly picky when younger, now that he is older he has pretty much learned he isn't allowed to be so picky and he eats what we cook. My 18 month old on the other hand barely eats any solid food so if he eats anything at all we are excited haha! (He has many medical issues that make him this way)

My son eats *everything*. The only time he starts to get finicky about his food is when he gets really tired. And mostly its just him being purely stubborn, to where if you can GET IT IN HIS MOUTH, he'll eat it. Though I have to say, I've always thought kids are only as picky about food as you let them be. My parents ALWAYS made me have three polite bites of everything on my plate, whether I liked everything or not, and its a policy I enforce with my husband (who is a pickier eater than the baby :P ) and my son, who honestly hasn't had a problem scarfing down everything I give him.

My Alex is like that...at daycare he eats everything at home if it isn't a Nuetella sandwich or pancakes or veggies straws or a fruit cup he won't go near it.
