Cleaning a pony with toothpaste?
« on: March 13, 2016, 09:43:12 AM »
Hi everyone! :)
I would just like to ask wether it is safe to use toothpaste to clean ponies. (Bodies not tails). Will it get the dirt off of a pony who seems off colour because of dirt? And will it be safe on eyes and symbols? The pony I need to clean is g3 :)
Many thanks,
Mlp Sunsparkle xx

I use it!

Pro: great for rust stains, mildew, and other dirt/stains. Can help whiten or brighten.

Con: it has a mild abrasive, so it can damage things like TE eyes, color change symbols etc. it can also dull anything that has a shiny finish like eyes, so be carful when using.  your pony will smell like mint, but it dissipates after a few weeks. it can dry out or bleach the vinyl, so I would not use it as your every day pony cleaner, just when you really need the extra help with mold or such. It will dry out hair.

Tips: use cheap "whitening" toothpaste. the natural stuff is not as effective. apply and let it sit for a while before scrubbing and rinsing, it will be much more affective.

good luck!

I'd choose liquid dish soap over toothpaste if you don't have any major cleaning to do.  Don't see any rust?  You don't need to use toothpaste!

I use it all the time.  It's surprising how clean a pony can get with it and a magic eraser.  There are some I'd avoid, like twinkle eyes and magic message, but I love using it.

I use tooth paste on rusty tails and on pony insides. I don't usually use it for exterior cleans. I leave antibacterial dish soap for exterior cleaning. Good luck!

Tooth paste was my go-to pony cleaner for many years. I have never had an issue with it damaging any part of a pony. Recently I switched to Dawn dish soap as I started finding the toothpaste was leaving a fine white grit on ponies after a through rinsing under running water. Dish soap works just as well without leaving any dried product behind.

Tooth paste and a brush still is my go-cleaner, but only for ponies that obviously haven't been cleaned in years, which is most of what I get. For regular dust and dirt on newer ponies, it's not really necessary. I can't say I've ever had any problems with it damaging paint, although I do try to be gentle with it on magic message and glitter symbols. And yeah, it does dry out hair, although is a good rust remover, so I make sure to rinse and condition thoroughly if I use it on hair.

With Magic Message ponies, just try not to touch the symbol with anything and be very gentle.  I still vividly remember a collector describing how she dunked a Cloud Dreamer in soapy water and the top layer of her symbol "just slid off".

Yeah, I ruined one of my childhood magic message ponies with a magic eraser.  Their symbols are so fragile.
