When you say a book swap what do you mean? Like we mail each other books? Or we just suggest books for each other to read?

This sounds cool! If the spending minimum isn't too high I might be interested.

Are we talking buying new books...or lending out ones we already have?

I thinking wouldn't have be new books could be used books as long books nice condition and have minium  value at $10 on books/book related.   Partner you shipped to will own books not be lending!  I would ask questions like...  What arthors you like/dislike?  if have book wishlist?  What themes or type books are into/ not into? What favorite book? Partner can choice buy off partner wishlist or books that one thinks that their partner may enjoy reading.

I would only participate if it was a Childrens book swap.

I'd be interested as long as the spending limit wasn't too high.

$15 would be a good limit. And along with that, maybe put a number of books minimum to, like 2-3 books minimum like there are with pony swaps. I think it would be best to stick with wishlist books though unless someone specifically says it's okay not to.

I am interested, but books aren't easily available to me here. Buying is too expensive, so I could only swap those that I own and have already read.

Good idea! I am up for it. If the limit was Seven dollars because I am really into the Erin hunter books and they are under ten dollars. I would trade then.

Although this can get complicated. What if I had a a $14 book and traded for a $7 book?

I think it would just be like pony swaps, and less like a trade. Not everyone can afford much, so the spending/book minimum is set low enough to where anyone with access to book stores can pick up some good books. There are lots of online used book sites that are okay, too. And just because one person buys like a million and one books, doesn't mean anyone else has to! Sometimes people get two ponies, sometimes people get 20. Anyone who joins, one can assume they could just buy their own books instead, it's just funner to give and receive gifts. We could put a maximum limit, too, though. Might be a good idea since books can get expensive. Although I'm not an expert on book prices these days so I'm not really sure where to set the max limit.

And everyone should make sure they have plenty of relatively cheap and easy to find books on their wishlist. I'd hate to make someone hunt down some rare $80 set or something, lol. Lots of books that you could get, you just haven't got around to it yet, or read at the library but just want a copy of your own, etc.

We could do extras, right? I mean not a whole lot, since books are heavy enough as is, but we could totally include like cute bookmarks and stickers, etc.

And don't forget that media mail shipping is an option for cheap shipping! Otherwise heavy or big books will put you in a spot for shipping costs.

You might need to really think about this one.

Not everyones going to like the same thing, and some people might already have many books.  You should either go with all new, no exceptions, or all used, make sure theres a strict guideline on whats acceptable.

Goodluck!

How about writing a little sweet message for the swap-partner inside the cover of the book, it would make it special to me! :)
And how about having a "genre"-wishlist and favorite authors? That could work. if you happen to get doubles; it's no big deal for me and I do hope there would be candy included! :D
I'm also open for a comic-book-swap!!!! :D

Lemon Treat you have alot inspiration ideas...   I do agree with melody_ angel have clear and strick guidelines over books swap.  I do know Amazon books if you have order of  $25 is free shipping and also promotion one books list under buy 3 get  1 free.... ( usually series)  I order alot my books from amazon...    I mostly into paperbacks BUT I do have few hardcover books due because I couldn't wait to ready book when comes paperbacks.
I really like hearing everyone feedback, ideas and interests.

Sounds a like idea. I would suggest sticking to just paperbacks (if possible) - hard cover would add a lot to shipping.

Why couldn't there be a mix of new and used? With pony swaps, they don't all have to be brand new. As long as the books are in good condition I don't see the difference.  :what:

I agree. I'd rather get more used books than 1 or 2 new ones - especially since new books are soooo expensive (15 bucks or more) and used books are sooo cheap (5 bucks or less). Plus, I'd really only be interested in children's books, which are usually even more expensive than paperbacks.

One of the fields on the form could be whether you mind getting used books or not. Those who choose only new books can choose that option knowing they're going to get a significantly smaller package :)

^Thisss. Plus paperbacks are smaller, usually.

Stopxmotion, I think maybe it's just because the mix of new and used can end up with some people receiving dingy versions of books they really wanted new, just because it's not a "rule" to go new.

I think a rule to follow your partner's requests for book condition would be good. And to be reasonable in your wishlist. Make sure there's plenty of stuff on your list that's not going to drive your partner into bankruptcy if they buy new/perfect condition.

And, just like how you have to say whether you're willing to ship internationally, you should have to say whether you're willing to put the money towards new books or if you prefer buying used/a combination of used and new. Obviously there's no 100% guarantee you won't still have to, in the event of an odd number or something, but it's still a preference to be taken into consideration right?

I also agree that Amazon is a great website for books. They can be a little crazy with their prices sometimes (like, a million dollar pair of socks crazy) but usually everything's really reasonable in the books area, as far as I know. I'm sure there will be a long enough shopping period to order books online.

Oh and if the swap does get set up officially Mareacooda I can help figure out rules and guidelines if you want! Bouncing ideas around in this thread has actually been pretty fun.

Also everyone remember if you send candy, keep it wrapped up super safe! There's a reason you don't eat or drink in libraries xD

Post by: okapishomapi on April 22, 2012, 04:36:07 PM
I agree, Lemon. There has to be a point where the book condition is just too crappy to send in a package, even if the recipient said she wants used books. Of course, we do the same thing with pony swaps - no one sends baity ponies, unless they're extras or specifically asked for.

Like I said, I'd personally rather get used books, just because I know new books are stupid expensive. I get all of my children's books from goodwill, so I'm used to it :)

I love used books and most of the ones I currently want aren't too expensive. I'd be willing to buy a combination of used/new books as long as there was enough time.

Hey I was just wondering would this be a swap that could include any type of book? Lets say I want a vintage children's book really bad thats not expensive and can be found on ebay...could I put that on a list? Or what if I want a coloring book? Or other children's books? Or a Fashion Angels Fashion design kids art book? I love those and there are a few I don't have yet. Vintage books?  I would be very interested if I didn't have to put brand new titles and novels as I don't need those.  Can you explain what types of books we are allowed to ask for on a wishlist?

tulagirl I think it could be all sorts of books, as long as they're available and not expensive! Although it's up to whoever will run the swap to decide, but I do think it's best to include all types.

Book swaps are a lot of fun! I've participated in a few book box swaps on another site. It was done a bit differently though. The organizer put together a box of books (only books so it could be shipped by media mail) and put in a journal. There was a list of us that signed up to participate and where arranged on the list by where we lived and the box was shipped from one participant to another according to the list. Each person when they got the box could take what ever books they wanted but had to replace them with an equal number/ condition of books. The journal was for listing which books you took and which you put in as well as personal notes and greetings. :) It was alot of fun. although it did take awhile to make the round to everyone. We tried to keep a good mix of genres in the box. The nice thing was you didn't have to search or buy any books you could put in ones you'd already read and I found some stories I loved that I never would have found otherwise. :) Shipping wasn't to bad between 15 to 20$ for a box of 10 to 25 books.

We need to find a host, if Mareacooda doesn't want to! I'd volunteer but I have no experience. Not that I'm not willing just that I don't want anyone to feel like they can't trust the swap host xD I definitely have enough time on my hands though, that's for sure.

You've been here a while and have a good reputation, though. Maybe PM a mod and ask if it would be appropriate for you to host it?

I would volunteer to host (and would love to!) but I reaaallly don't have the time. I definitely want to participate though!
