Ponies and morals
« on: August 10, 2015, 03:53:49 PM »
Is it morally wrong to separate a pony from her lifelong playmate? It sounds bizarre I know, but hear me out. I recently acquired a lot of ponies, and in the lot is a nibbles and dibbles. I have every reason to believe that this pair was originally packaged together and has spent the last 25 years together. The nibbles is in fabulous shape, but the dibbles has marker on his face :(

I have a dibbles in my collection in great condition. I want to sell the nibbles and dibbles pair. I am considering keeping the one with marker on his face in my personal collection (because I don't mind it so much), and selling the nibbles with my former dibbles, because then they will both be in fab shape and will probably sell better. I don't have a nibbles. Is it wrong to separate poor marker face dibbles from his twin? Is it wrong to just stick my old dibbles with this other nibbles and assume they'll get along?

Yes, I know they're just bits of vinyl or plastic, and I'm being pretty silly, but...hear me out. What do you think?

I actually have the same problem whit some of my toys. I own a Whizzer and a Caramel Crunch. The second one is in a bad condition and Im not really a big fan of her, but I decide do not separe them since I dont know how many years they spend together and also they are mi first G1 Ponis!

Maybe you can keep the two? I dont see anything wrong whit that. : ) You will still have the perfect one and the original duo!

Awww, I can totally understand your predicament.  I'd say it would be ideal if you could keep the two together.  Maybe you could sunfade the marker?
If you must separate them, what you should do is get a Nibbles who's being sold alone so the one you keep won't be lonely.

Keep them and make them triplets. You can call the marker face one Squibbles.

Ah, I totally understand your issue. They're just toys but you can't help but feel guilty. The pragmatic way would easily be splitting them, especially if you don't mind the marker. You have no interest in keeping Nibbles, at all, huh?

I always wonder what happened to the Sniffles that went with my Snookums. I found her at thrift, and very weirdly, there were two Snookums (in separate bags), but no Sniffles to be found.
I still feel a bit guilty for not picking up and ultimately separating her from her identical twin, even if I was just buying a dupe.

I understand, I'd have a hard time selling ponies that are "mates" or "family"

I have a similar problem with my two Sweet Notes. I used to think I could clean them up and sell one but now I've developed a head cannon that they're twins and I can't separate them.

Yes it is OKAY-  I would swap them out.  I suspect they have never even talked to each other the entire time and won't mind one bit taking off on their own. Sell Nibbles to a customizer so she can have a fabulous new life!

If I kept every pony that I found together, there'd be no room in my house for me.  :)

Sometimes, I feel compelled to keep them.  Sometimes, I sell them onwards.  So, if you don't feel particularly attached, go ahead and switch them out.  I'm sure they'll find collectors who love them.

I have the same problem with ponies that came with their original accessories - I just can't separate them to sell them. Either they all go or they all stay, I can't be the one to break a set.

Morally wrong? Absolutely not :) They are, as you say, just toys.

Would it be a bit of a conundrum for weird but understandable reasons? Absolutely yes. :) It is odd but I do understand you and I probably would also not be able to break them up either. I like the triplets idea.

Plastic doesn't care whether or not its separated from something it came in the same box with. >>;

I do, however, get what you mean. I've got quite a few messed up figures in my collections I should just toss out or replace with one in a better condition but I'm hard pressed to do it because of the nostalgic or sentimental value I've placed on the objects.

Edit- To answer your question, I would keep 'em together simply because I'm not only really nostalgic about things but I'm also lazy. A few imperfections on a pony isn't something that'd make me want to get rid of them.

I totally understand you. I don't buy many pony lots, so usually this dilemma doesn't happen to me, but I must always make sure that my childhood ponies are displayed in a way that I used to play with them when I was little. For example Baby Tic Tac Toe and Cuddles were a couple, and so were Baby Paws and Baby Splashes, so they can by no reason ever be separated in my display cabinet.
I'd also say make them a triplet!

Yeah, and I like the name too :) I don't like to separate ponies who've been in families; I understand where you're coming from! I had the hardest time finding a newborn Sandcastle to go with my lone Shovels because I couldn't find a Sandcastle for sale alone and I didn't want to separate a pair of twins.

This thread makes me want to start an orphanage for lonely baby twins so they can find a twin again...
