Title: Is there any rhyme or reason to your collection???
Post by: Nemesis on May 11, 2017, 01:11:36 PM: With dolls and the like, I tend to collect complete lines and display them in neat, organized arrangements. But with ponies... there are so many types, sizes, generations, series, and styles that my collection starts to just look like a giant vault of randomness. o_0; Trying to "complete" anything seems like an insurmountable task, due to the sheer volume of releases!

My question(s): is there rhyme or reason to your collection? Do you only collect certain generations, or certain types of ponies from said generations (brushables, blind bags, Funko, plush, etc.)? I seem to have collected a bit of everything. ^_^; And how do you display them in a way that's orderly and aesthetically pleasing?

Post by: Makaroni_the_pony on May 11, 2017, 01:22:25 PM: I literally just buy ponies that I like lol, sometimes I want to finish sets like with the so softs and the twinkle eyes, but even then if I don't like a pony I won't put it on my shelf, usually I go for bright colors, pastels, or just color schemes I think are cute

I'll collect ponies in any generation if I like them

My best tip for making ponies look nice would be to make sure you only do single rows on the shelf because once you start stacking rows it makes them look crazy, and also if you want you can color coordinate and do a rainbow thing

The only completion I've been going for is just trying to complete the herd I played with in childhood, I think I have almost all my ponies still from childhood so lately I've been trying to find the ones that my best friend had in her herd.

I got to about 1000 (with many more to go!) before I realized that this dream would not make for a nice reality. When I started forgetting who I owned I realized something should change. I also MUCH prefer the looks of my shelves now. Each pony has a bubble of personal space lol. It allows her to truly be displayed, instead of just being shelved if that makes sense?

Now I dont worry about sets. I only get ponies that dazzle me. My collection is about 150 now or so.
I tend to gravitate towards blues and greens and ponies in nm shape, but rhyme or reason? Chaos I tell you :p
I collect G1 and (mostly just Rainbow Dash) G4 with a handful of others mixed in. I also collect fakies because they're available in my favorite colours, whereas there are pretty few G1s in those shades.

Post by: Al-1701 on May 11, 2017, 04:20:00 PM: Admittedly, my collection is based on the ponies I like the TV series. Wind Whistler and Fizzy were obvious firsts. Then Paradise and Galaxy were high priorities, and I continued on from there.

Post by: Carrehz on May 11, 2017, 05:19:32 PM: Nope, I just get whichever ones I like :) I display them in a loose theme, like, I make up families for my ponies so I display them together, most of my winter/Christmas ponies are together, etc. Mums and babies are always together. Then for other ponies I just kind of put them wherever they'll go :P

Post by: Kazzellin on May 11, 2017, 07:12:11 PM: Well, I first started actively collecting a few years into the G3 line, and then I found out about the G1 European exclusives and bought a bunch of lots that I sorted and, er, never got past that with them, so I'm sure I have a bunch of common duplicates. Most of my collection is stored in boxes. I tried to do the whole MIP thing with the G3s, but they took up so much space that most were deboxed. Now I'm pretty much selling my G3's and focusing on the G1 line, primarily due to spacial constraints, and have decided to try getting the complete (loose!) line. The harder part is knowing who I need, because of those lots I bought! Doesn't help that I took a 1-2 year break from the arena and collecting in general, so have to go through the boxes and see who is where.

I know there are some ponies I need (Mimic and Crumpet, for two) and for awhile I focused on getting the last pony in particular lines (for example, Seaflower took me a bit), but there are other groups I'm not so sure about (like the so softs) because I haven't been able to take the time to sort through what all I have! ^^; Now, I'm working on redesigning my display cabinet, so I can display the baby ponies with their accessories, and hopefully not have to store those forever. :) Getting the entire G1 (US) line will be slow going, but the hunt is fun. :awake:

G3s I started out trying to collect them all and got way to overwhelmed so I only collect the ones I like and G4s I only collect what I like or certain sets like the pearly brushables. I love pony merch as well and plushies. Pretty much anything pony I collect lol.

I have shelves for displaying mainly bookshelves and some wall hanging shelves. I try to keep the same gens together on the same shelf.

Do not have time/money/room for more. Somethimes I tend to finish a serie, because it's a favorite one :biggrin:

I do have one (and only) glass cabinet with all my favorites between the favorites inside, but somethimes I make them rotate. They aren't lined, but just showed on one side or another, placed together so I don't have the same color/pose side to side.

I buy almost any pony or merch that I find in the wild. I do have a wanted list that I try to stick to for online buying.

For G4 I buy all new characters.

For G3 I used to buy every pony I found but they have been so plentiful in thrift stores I'm getting too many doubles and can't keep track so I leave them now and hopefully I don't regret it later.

For G2's I don't collect them but if I find them in thrift stores I pick them up.

For G3s: I only collect adult ponies that don't have 3D symbols or SLH. I also avoid duplicates, even if they're in different poses.

For G1s: I only collect non-white, tinsel-free, adult ponies that don't have glittery symbols or SLH.

As far as how I display them, there's no method there.

Like, I have most of the early year ponies because those are the ones I remember from brochures, so I'm extra nostalgic about them. And there are some sets that I have completed, or almost completed, because I particularly like them.

There are also a lot of sets that I specifically avoid because I don't like their gimmick. (Like the Sweet Kisses ponies, the Fancy Pants babies, etc.)

But then there are sets that I don't love and I don't hate, and I'll randomly have just one or two ponies from them--just the ones I find prettiest.

Since I'm just starting out, right now I'm trying to have every new pony I acquire be in a pose I don't currently own. So for example, even though I like Bow Tie, I won't be getting her anytime soon because I already own Parasol, who is in the Bow Tie pose. This said, I have "grail ponies" I would absolutely break this rule for if I had the money/resources...for example, Night Glider despite the fact that I own Cherry Treats, or Blueberry Baskets even though I own Sea Breeze.

I'm also trying to not oversaturate my collection in too much of one color. Despite how cute pink ponies are, it would bother me on some deeper level if I looked at my collection and could only see a sea of pink, lol.

Other than that, I'm basically just collecting whatever appeals to me! And trying not to go overboard because I tend to have an addictive personality when it comes to toys...

I'm not fond of 4.5, but I might grab that new line with the scenes on them, just as a display, maybe MIP or something different. I adore plush, but try to be restrictive because of size, so only buy in the wild or super extreme bargains now, I have no room for them! DVDs - gotta get them all, all gens. I particularly have an issue with G1 releases - the box art is so pretty and I buy them all. I need G1 DVD rehab! Books are much the same, but it's a slower process. I try to only get one copy of each story, so pick an edition and then search. I'm also obsessed with colouring books, particularly the G3 ones by Five Mile Press. Such pretty covers! I keep them in binders to keep them nice and organised because there's heaps.

I collect G1 Ponies because I just want to get the ones who only appear in the specials, movie, and T.V series. And some that don't (I just add them when I recreate an episode or movie).

If I buy a bundle on eBay.uk I just keep the ones that I want and sale the ones I don't want.

Shelves of Newborn Cuties, G2 Babies, and Big Brothers abound. But I realized I didn't like how it looked and there was no reason to buy stuff if it looked bad on the shelf. Inevitably, I don't love the look of a bunch of G3s on the shelf. I pared way down to just my favorites and halved those- half on display, half in a box somewhere until I rotate. I think G1 as a whole together just looks so much nicer. Then, I arrange by year (and set). I find there is often a commonality in color usage by year, so arranging them that way helps the color flow and look more organized.
