Flash drives for smart phones
« on: March 30, 2019, 12:23:37 PM »
Last December I went to a concert. I used my phone to take pictures because the band doesn't allow real cameras. I was a little too liberal in using the photo burst feature. 3/4 of the way through the show, my phone was full.

After the concert I started seeing commercials on tv for Ixpand. (http://ixpand.com) I had no idea something like this existed!  >_< This one is for an iPhone and I have a Samsung. I did see one at Wal-Mart that is compatible with my phone. But I want to make sure it's going to do what I'm wanting it to do before I spend $30. I'm hoping as I take the pictures they will go onto the flash drive instead of my phone. Or once my phone is full it will automatically switch over to the flash drive. I tried reading the websites and the packaging. They mention automatically copying files from the phone to the drive. But it doesn't mention saving directly to the drive.

I'll be seeing them again in June, so I have until then to figure this out.

Which galaxy do you have? You could just get a microSD card! The method of using/removing them is different depending on the model, but it's stored in the same place (on the newer ones) as your SIM card. Plus, it's probably a better bang for your buck.

Thanks. Will the photos save directly to the flash drive?

There should be some way to configure it in storage settings, or you'll have to move older in mass quantities.

Ah shoot, the one phone that doesn't have a microsd. Here's a flash drive that should do the job, although it looks like you still need an sd card.

What would the SD card be for? It's a USB c to USB a drive...

So the SD card would go in that little door by the power button, right? How would I get it open? I stuck a pin in the hole, but that did nothing.

The Galaxy S6 does not have a slot for a mini SD card.

Here is what Samsung says about storage:

Specifically the Google cloud section...

Ok. I don't use any cloud services. I just transfer files directly to my computer.

I'm just saying that's what the company recommends since there is no SD card.

I'd be weary of using a USB stick in my phone for more then just transferring files because if it gets hit or bumped, that can destroy the main slot for charging the phone.

If you had to, I'd recommend something that stuck out less -- like a mini usb type c drive with a low profile ... and using an adapter to transfer it to the computer
:/ meh. I'm not sure they even make low profile ones like normal usb drives...

This is the smallest thing I see, and it has a normal usb thing as well: https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-64GB-Traveler-DTDUO3C/dp/B010HWCEHM?tag=imoreb-20&ascsubtag=UUimUdUnU41019YYwYwnb2hi4dthixs63djnz2xg5dfmnuhi2lqomxgg33n&th=1

Thanks! I'll look into these. They're a lot smaller than the one I looked at at Wal-Mart. You have a point about it getting bumped. But I'm also used to using my phone while it's plugged into my portable charger. These don't look much bigger than the end of my charger cord.

And just a thought.

The product for the iPhone probably had software with easy to use interface. But a simple flash drive would not.

And its.up to your phones settings go be able to direct where it's saving. It could be slower or lag to save directly onto a flashdrive, if possible.

There may or may not be an app in the Google store to handle images in an easier way.

Although I feel making a Google account and transferring images that way will be the less cumbersome in the example you gave on needing to do it on the fly. The steps seemed pretty easy.

Wal-Mart didn't have the exact one I was looking at before when I was there today.  It was close to this one. Same size and shape, but it was 64 GB and made for Samsung phones.

I agree that the shorter ones linked above are a better idea. I'll get a couple ordered in the next week or so. That will give me plenty of time to see how well they'll work. I'm just hesitant to go with a Google account because I don't want to pay an annual fee when I'll only need it for one night. That just feels like a waste of money to me.
