It's that time of the year again, at least where I live, where colds are just piling up one after another with runny nose and sneezing . What are your best home remedies to fight them?
I myself make ginger shots. 200 grams of grated ginger simmer in 1 litre of water for 20 minutes. Don't let it get above 60 degrees Celcius. Strain and add half a dl of honey. Let it cool to room temperature and add the juice of two lemons. Strain again and pour into bottles. Keep in the fridge. I take a shot each morning.
I also make a cup of tea of fresh grated ginger and mint that steep for ten minutes before adding a teaspoon of honey each day :coffee:.
These help keep the cold at bay and not get any worse :satisfied:.
I also eat a lot of ice cream .

Chicken soup, tea, and robitussin

I don't get colds but I have general malaise all the time. I like Twinings Tea lemon ginger for soothing a sore throat and help with coughing.
The drink you make sounds really good! Fresh ginger root is hard to find around here. There's two Asian markets I know of, and I've been to one of them years ago. I'm sure they have fresh ginger. I never get out and about though.
I also like to run my oil diffuser with a blend of citrus (bergamot, lemon and orange) with some lavender and peppermint and breathe that for a while. It really clears your airways.

I start drinking pineapple juice as soon as people around me start getting sick. It helps keep my immune system up and if I do happen to actually catch something, it lessens the severity and recovery time. Plus it's delicious.

Is pineapple good for that? Hmm. I eat pineapple for the bromide, it's an anti-inflammatory. I use the juice for my smoothies sometimes. I'll have to start drinking it too. It IS delicious.

BC, I didn't know ginger were hard to come by. We have it in every grocery store all year round. It's a staple, although very expensive when not in season.
I also did not know pineapple were good against colds. I eat it occasionaly but it is too sweet and if I eat too much my gum start to itch. One learn something new every day :).

i've never heard that about pineapple juice. i'll have to try that next time i'm feeling under the weather.
for me chicken or some other clear broth soup always helps. last time i was sick i had a won ton soup with some meat and veggies. that helped a lot. also lots of sleep.
i used to take cold medicine more but i don't as much anymore. I used to take Theraflu but the one that helped me the most is basically alcohol so it just makes me sleep. there was some news a few weeks back that one of the more common decongestants here in the US doesn't actually work. so that's not great.
tea helps too. i usually put lemon and honey in :)
I hope you feel better soon :)

Makes sense because it's chock full of vitamin c.

From what I've read up on, it's not the vimanin c, but Bromelain that makes it so good :).

I forgot to add that pineapple juice has a natural decongestant as well so it helps clear you out a bit if you have a cold. :pineapple:

Saltines as in the crackers? We use them when we have cheeseplates, lol. Never had them when I'm sick.
lovesbabysquirmy, do you mean regular rice you cook with turmeric and cumin? Or do you add them afterward?
