Title: Anyone else read the Outlander series?
Post by: lovesbabysquirmy on May 15, 2012, 01:39:10 PM
Just curious if anyone else reads this book series by Diana Gabaldon.  I'm only on the third book (Voyager) but I am giddy with curiousity to "finish" them - there was a new one last year so I don't think the author is done yet, LOL.  My husband refuses to find anything good in them as he dreads historical fiction (okay maybe the fact that she took part of our clan's lineage and went make-believe with them is the primary reason).  So I have nobody to share the excitement with!  :(

Soooo anyone else love reading about Jamie Fraser and Claire?  :-p

Never heard of it but it sounds like they could be interesting. I like historical fiction.

Guilty....I love Jamie!!!  I've read almost all of them, I think I haven't finished the last one or two :-)  But I did love them!

They are awesome. I have met Diana Gabaldon on several occasions and she is awesome! I can't wait for the next one!

Mmmmm Jaime  ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, known as Cross Stitch here. I've read it a couple of times (maybe even three.... not sure!) I have to say though, I struggled with the second. It took two tries for me to get into it, and even then I found it really dragged in places  :lookround:  (It was sooo sad though, at the end!!!) I have always meant to get onto Voyager; I was left with a real 'want' to find out what happens next! Might try and pick it up second hand or something at some point (right now I have my nose stuck in the SoIaF series {game of thrones}).

Jamie is very charismatic; very easy to get hooked on him, and a couple of the other bawdy characters! I heard rumours of the first book being made into a series or a film, though I don't know whether anything is on the go there or not.

That is so cool!  I imagine she must be a pretty amazing lady from her bio blurb and the fact that she has written those books in the first place.

I DON'T want them to make a movie though!  Jamie is just perfect in my mind; casting an actor would ruin it!

Urgh - I know! That's the danger of adaptations. In the fanfare I saw, one of the most popular suggestions was Gerard Butler for Jaime.... ummm.... no. He might have a TOTALLY awesome accent (don't all scots!  :P ) but I totally don't see him in the fit of Jaime AT ALL!!

I think I pull the books off my shelf about once a year or so.  I absolutely can't wait for the next one, mostly because I hated the last one and she needs to make up for it!

It's one of my favourite series! I found the first book at a flea market and got interested because of the setting in historical Scotland. Turned out that wasn't the only thing to keep me reading, Gabaldon does have some great storytelling skills. :) So far I've read the first volumes a couple of times, the last few only once.

I'm eagerly waiting for the next book, too. Not for the same reason as coinoperatedgirl, though, I actually liked An Echo in the Bone  (...and the cliffhanger!) The previous one, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, was my least favourite. I actually thought that was going to be the last one in the series and I was pretty disappointed, it felt like the quality went down with every new part, so I was happily surprised with the latest one. Another surprise was that I find myself more interested in Roger & Bree's story now, those were my favourite parts in the latest book. ^^

I agree with you on the film adaptation. I hope they won't make one, and if they do, hopefully they'll cast some formerly unknown Scotsman for Jamie's role 'cause I can't think of anyone suitable. ;)

I've only read the first one and the one about the Revolutionary war, but I loved the first one more.  Such good books!

Yeah I put them all on hold at the library like a fiend...  then the librarian was like, "Yeah, I re-read these every year."  My husband was just baffled at all these women who love these books, LOL!  I'm like, 'Your family is Scottish, this should be right up your alley,' and he keeps saying, 'We ARE Scottish and that's why I'm put off!'  *sigh giggles*  Guess this why I don't get all stupidly giddy at the next installment of Mass Effect, LOL.

I don't know who it was who said this but I once read a comment about the 1960s: "I wasn't there so I can glorify it." I guess that holds true for these books, too... either the Scottish part or the historical part, or both. But mostly the Scottish part... I can understand someone who actually is part of the heritage not being terribly excited about this kind of glorification. Perhaps.

I need to get my BF read these, too, or the first one at least. Because I was never sure if the books have the same appeal to men... since they are written from the female point of view. So far he's liked all the books/series I've recommended though, i.e. Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire. He's not much of a reader, at least compared to me who's been a bookworm ever since I learned to read. It's a pity I don't have that much time for it nowadays... :(
