Reused symbols between generations?
« on: June 02, 2022, 07:51:06 PM »
I just noticed something that connects G2 and G3 recently.

The symbols of G2 Baby Fleur

And G3 Darling Dahlia

are the exact same image, just colored differently!

You can definitely notice that the stenciled look of Dahlia's symbol is somewhat out of place when compared to the more detailed G3 symbols.

Darling Dahlia was released in 2005, long after G2 ended and G3 took its place. But perhaps because DD was a Sam's Club exclusive, Hasbro didn't feel like creating a new symbol for a pony with such a limited release, so they pulled out an obscure one from the G2 vault? All the other store exclusive G3's have original symbols though.

Are there any other cross-generational pony symbols used on two unrelated characters out there?

Oh wow, I'd never have noticed this myself! And how unexpected for them to reuse a G2 symbol as well, considering Hasbro usually ignore that gen.

I love G2 but I have to admit, G3 used this symbol better. G2 had a weird habit of giving ponies these very detailed, gorgeous symbols and then having them be monochrome so it's not easy to make out all of the little details.

Nice catch! I wonder if that graphic might've been part of some clip art collection Hasbro had access to (a lot of the later G2 symbols kind of feel like clip art)? That seems a bit more likely to me than them looking to an obscure european G2 baby to reuse their symbol for a G3.

Then again G2 was still somewhat fresh in memory back then. G3 Sunny Daze pretty much reused G2 Light Heart's color scheme. Petal Blossom exists in both G2 and G3 and is basically the same pony, but could possibly be a coincidence (a purple/pink combination with flower symbol isn't very unique).

I wonder if Hasbro US even was involved with the designs for the later european G2s? It doesn't feel like they were designed by the same people as the ponies from the first few years.

Ooh, good thinking Lilja. I could definitely see this being clip/stock art of some kind - it does have that stencil-y look to it.

I don't know a lot about the production side of G2 but I've always gotten the impression the later years of G2 were handled by a different team, too. The names in particular are very different to the first few years of G2 (compare Light Heart, Ivy, Sweet Berry etc to Medicin, Springdy, Mimosa).

G4 Comet Tail and G5 Sunny Starscout

Those two have very similar symbols, but they're not the exact same image like the example in OP.

Still, good catch, I hadn't noticed before how similar their symbols were.

Wow, nice catch!!

G2 Princess Twinkle Star and the G4 unicorn Twinkle Shine (I think that was her name) have similar color schemes and symbols.  I know blue stars aren't the most unique symbol, but the stars are similarly rounded on the edges.

G2 had a weird habit of giving ponies these very detailed, gorgeous symbols and then having them be monochrome so it's not easy to make out all of the little details.

Yeah, it's really disappointing.  Pretty rare for a G2 pony to have a multi-colored symbol.  And yet clearly they were capable of it, since Light Heart has multiple colors.

I've noticed that about Twinkleshine/Twinkle Star too, it's particularly interesting since Twinkleshine was a creamy white colour in the show. Obviously she's not the only G4 character to turn pink for the toys :p but it is curious they picked such similar colours (and name!) to the G2 character.
