Title: Oh, the weather outside is frightful
Post by: SourdoughStomper on November 07, 2017, 07:59:59 AM
:snow: :snowing: :snowball: :sled: :ski: :cold:

It was raining lightly here on Halloween, and overnight it snowed. It's been here ever since. We even got 39 cm (15.35 in) of snow last week.

I have a love/hate relationship with snow. Mostly hate because I am not a big winter fan. It never snowed in my hometown in Arizona. I always wanted to find out what it was like in my childhood. (Oh, the irony).

That said, I can sometimes enjoy the beauty of snow. Especially if there is also hoarfrost on all the branches and things outside. It can be quite breathtaking. Also, it can be very bright outside when there is a clear blue sky and sunbeams reflecting that snow. One of my favorite things about winter is when we get those shaped snowflakes.

To answer my own poll, I have a temptation to say "never" is a good time to snow, but I imagine even I would miss it after awhile. (Miss it a little bit). So perhaps there can be snow for just one month, the month that winter starts. Then it can go away until next year. :P I'll say December 1st.

How do you feel about snow? :) Do you get snow where you live?

I don't have too much of an opinion on when it snows, but it snowed here a couple days ago. Not a whole lot, but it stuck a little bit and I took some pictures of some ponies in it (album here if you want to see (https://imgur.com/a/eul71)).

It's really pretty when it snows and when the snow is fresh. But then when it snows a lot and it becomes all slushy and dirty on the sides of the roads, it becomes really ugly...

We still have 8 degrees here in the South of Sweden. Today was sunny but some Days are really grey and rainy.

Last time we had snow over Christmas was 2009. Many years we don´t hardly get any snow at all and if we do it melts away really fast.

So I would Love some snow and below freezing in December, especially over Christmas!  :snowball:

Ugh, I hate snow and ice. Where's the comes Dec. 23rd at midnight and leaves at 1 a.m. on Boxing Day option? I suppose that's not so realistic, so I picked December 21st. :)

We usually have first snowfall by mid/end of november in my area :) If it does not come by then, it might comes later, in january. I can tell because my daughter and my husband have their birthdays in november (25th and 26th) and sometime we had snow and sometimes it was too warm and snow came after New Years Eve.
I hope we can expect some soon, its been going down to 2-4°C during the day! (I love snow, did you guess it already? lol).

Lol, funny thing to tell... my in-laws live next village (6km from here) and sometimes they have snow and we dont XD Its because their village is higher above mean sea level compared to us. Not much but sometimes its enough.

I'm totally with you on that! We're supposed to get a teensy above 0°C in the coming days. Just long enough to make ice a thing everywhere, I'm sure, but not enough to make much of a dent in the snow. I'm gonna hide under the bed. :hide: LOL

Snowing habits are a bit weird in my area. Some years it goes off on one and we get loads of snow, others it's just a bit here and there. I'm an equal opportunities person though; doesn't matter how much or how little it snows, I hate it anyway! XD

Nope. Nope!  Soo much nope.

I guess its nice for the last 2 weeks in December.  Then it can go away.

Not like that's what happens but that would be ideal for me.

For me in the Northen Hemisphere I would say the start of December. But for me we got snow in very early November. I am not the biggest fan of it but it is pretty the first few days. :P

Northern dweller here. I’d say November first. So long as it’s after Halloween, I don’t really care when.

Well ... in the UK you are LUCKY to even get snow  (well unless you are in Scotland, they get it more than down here)

I love snow so absolutely any time is perfectly fine with me. Obviously I would love it for Christmas at least once but.... if it snows before Christmas here it is usually yucky slush by my brothers birthday (23rd Dec).

The problem with the UK and snow is everyone in the UK panics! (well down here anyway). My boyfriend just doesn't understand it and finds it hilarious (he is Swedish). He was stuck on the run way at Heathrow for like 6-8 hours before because of Snow.... this was him in the UK.. just landed... but Heathrow couldn't coupe with the snow... obviously he was annoyed, but BA gave everyone on the plane free alcohol whilst they waited... so he was pretty tipsy by the time I met him at the gate
Because of this though we NEVER fly to and from Heathrow anymore Gatwick is 1000% better as they have a heated run way. (plus its 10mins away from my Nana so handy )

This year I am heading to Sweden (near Stockholm) for just over a week just before Christmas so really hoping it snows in Sweden, especially when we go to the Christmas Market  (hoping it snows in the UK when we get back too... but not the day we are flying )

It never snows here in SW Florida. I miss it!

The year I left my hometown in Wisconsin was one of the worst on record at that time. It snowed 48" in three days! We had massive 3 foot long killer icicles on the side of our garage. I have old photos somewhere...

I wanted to choose "Anytime", but went with Dec 1 in the end. My favourite season is winter, and it is exactly because of snow. I love snow (and I really hate the "simply very cold, dry cold with no snow" we recently get here), and I'd be happy to get it anytime* now. I can't remember the last time we had snow over Christmas. We had it for a few days in December last year, but already after Christmas. I'd already be very happy if this became a recurring thing, because I can't remember when we last had snow in December before that. It used to be the usual thing when I was a child... :(

*anytime only refers to the winter months, which should be Dec-Feb here. What we are prone to have here in the last few years is no snow up until late Feb/March, when it miraculously appears out of nowhere, bringing wintery cold. Sometimes also in April. It never stays, but the accompanying freeze is enough to kill all the buds on the plants who thought it's spring already (and it should be spring already in Mar/Apr here)...

Dang... I'm pretty sure that amount of snow you got there last week is more than the amount of snow we've gotten in the last six years combined.  :|

Early 2011 was a record breaking snowfall year where we got well over 20 inches in one year, and one area probably around where I'm living right now got 30 inches in one storm.

But it's like that was it... Now we get dustings, if we're lucky.

Anyway, considering how where I live summer weather can now happen anytime of the year I think it's only fair that winter weather can do the same, so I say "Anytime". But of course it doesn't work that way. We just get warmer winters and everything else gets warmer as well.

If I lived somewhere normal I'd probably want the first snow sometime in November.

Just like Lollipop says, the UK has a strange relationship with snow.

We love the romantic idea of fluffy snowflakes, snow-covered landscapes and having is snow on Christmas Day (they even place bets on this).

In reality, maybe a couple of centimetres fall, stays for an hour then melts away. Normally in Feb/March - it seems to snow closer to Easter time than Christmas time!

If it is cold enough to settle and stay, all chaos ensues - trains are cancelled, road traffic goes crazy. It drives me nuts that a lot of drivers do not know how to drive in snow (of course, they are not used to it, but anyway...) driving too close and too fast and then astonished that they skid into the back of another car when the car in front needs to brake.   >_<

So yes, just for the Christmassy feel, it would be nice if it snowed in December then allowed the spring to come along afterwards and cheer everyone up with its warmth in the new year

You joke about it, but that's pretty much exactly what happened last year where I live. Well, if you count a dusting of snow as enough snow for you. Except the cold weather disappeared right before Christmas. It returned for a couple of days in early January with another dusting and then it was gone for the rest of the "winter".

You know it's really bad when the poor meteorologists are being inundated with unhappy people on social media right now, because they're predicting warmer than average temperatures for the rest of November and a lot of people are already getting flustered about the prospect of another non-winter.

I mean to say you know it's really bad when there are people aside from me complaining about it.

I put December 1st, because Christmas season feels like winter even if it isn't winter!!
It's been so warm this year, I'm scared it'll just be a dead grass Christmas. A few years ago it would dust on Thanksgiving, but that's becoming less likely with every 60 degree day.

:) I love the snow, it's all the logistical hassle that comes with it that makes me annoyed with it after the third day!

A couple of years ago, we actually had snow that stayed... it was novel to scrape the drive each morning but then as the snow turned into ice and the road had a layer of ice-rink on it (living in a cul-de-sac meant we had no gritter trucks) driving out became a game of dare. Us and a few neighbours managed to scrape up some sections of road but there was too much to do - we ended up using old carpets to help cars get momentum on the road as it was so skiddy!

Our region is just not equipped to deal with snow, just regular, mild, drizzly English weather!

As much as possible please! I tend to think of myself as a mostly happy person, but when there's snow around, that's when I feel truly happy. Maybe it's just because I can't handle heat at all so winter is the only time I feel energetic, or maybe it's because it gets so quiet or because it's so pretty or... Everything about it :D
Unfortunately I live in the southwest of Norway, which is notoriously mild and wet all year round. Except for that one year where the snow fell in December and melted in May, the snow never lasts long around here :(

Here were I live the only mouths that you can say for certain there won't be snow is July and August :P. However on a normal year we tend to see flurries start to appear in October; though we don't tend to see any lasting snow cover till November. December and January tend to be our snowiest months (which I personally really like because I adore a good snowy Christmas).

Personally, I do not like snow, except for the possibility of doing handbrake turns in an empty, snow-covered parking lot. Otherwise, it's a cold, wet hassle. Not to mention, the slightest presence of snow makes the entire South go into full lockdown and close half of everything.

Good thing it only happens no more than twice a year.

I'm a northener in the north. We got our first and second snowfall in octobre but both has melted away. I usually want snow from november as we used to get beautiful frisky winters, but the last two years has been sad with ice and plus degrees. Last christmas eve it rained! :( I love snow but hate what has begun to happen to the winters around here.

I hate how England grinds to a panicky halt when it snows! And I also worry about my family driving to work when there's snow and ice. So I put 21st December, because everyone's off work/will soon be off work then, and I can enjoy the pretty snow without the panic.

I chose December 1st, but like some of the other Britons have said, we don't really get snow. And honestly, that's for the best, as on those rare occasions that there is even an inch of snow, everything goes crazy, especially public transport. It's funny, London made it through the Olympics with a "Keep calm and carry on" attitude, but even a bit of snow and nothing goes anymore. So my honest answer to the question when I'd like to have snow is, "I don't mind when in winter, as long as I can stay at home".

Aussie here! It does snow here in the mid/low areas of the country, but never here. That's why we're the sunshine state - if it snowed, I think there'd be mass panic, and lots of traffic incidents, I mean it gets crazy when it rains here!

Ooooh, I love to chare this one so I'll do it again. Boxingday 2009. The county asked parents to keep their kids indoor as there were risk of drowning incidents. It was a lot of fun rundning around in it tho.. And I have to say: public transport still worked and were on time.

We haven't had snow yet in Rhode Island but I can predict our first snowfall will be before winter at this rate.  We were getting 70 and 80 degree days then the next day it would be in the 40's and 50's.  Back and forth one day warm the next day cold.  Today the morning was 30 degrees and I think it's 19 or 20 degrees tomorrow for the morning or Saturday morning, not sure.

By now I'm certain fall is out the window.  I love Fall and Spring but those are two most messed up seasons around here.  We had some severe rain and wind last week and all the leaves that were just starting to turn beautiful fall colors are now on the ground dead in one day.  The wind blew most of them off.  So yeah no pretty foliage around here this year.

For me I feel it's acceptable for snow to appear when Winter is officially here but that never happens.

Well oops I thought this was Stormness's post! Sorry SourdoughStomper. I love snow. I've only seen it once when I was in Austria but I miss it.
Its not as hot as Brissy here but in the hills near Hahndorf, the heat wave one day, flooding spring rains the next is extremely off putting. My little toyota hatchback got bogged just by being parked.  :yikes: It also makes Christmas a no-hot-foods kind of celebration. We all bring our most delicious salads and cold foods.

actually I loved snow as a kid, and I still love seeing snow - it's so beautiful!   :lovey:
especially if you're sitting inside by the fire, warm drink, maybe some chocolate, good book... or going out sledging and then coming in to a nice warm house
but....
now it's no fun when you have horses/animals and health issues and you *have * to go out in it no matter what you feel like. Plus only the teensiest bit of snow seems to cause mass chaos here in the UK , especially on the roads, so traffic is awful - and we get nothing like the amount of snow lots of other countries get

Considering it only snows once every 3 or 4 years around here, any time at all is acceptable!

Oh, and I should add that "snow" here means anytime actual flakes fall from the sky.  Most of the time it melts shortly after hitting the ground or a matter of hours after.  Getting an inch of snow here that actually stays on the ground past mid morning is enough to cause schools to be canceled and people to call in sick to work  :P

I said "other" because I have lived in Johannesburg South Africa my whole life and it just doesn't snow here. If it does, like a couple of years ago when we got 1mm, the whole city stops functioning while we all go outside to look and feel and take excited photo's of it. But snow in its proper form is something that I am completely unfamiliar with.

We actually haven't had snow where I live for a couple of years (minus a light dusting that doesn't settle, so I'm not counting that). If we get it this year it's going to be a little heartbreaking for me as it will be the first time it's snowed since I lost my dog. He adored the snow and we used to go and play in it. He absolutely loved playing with snowballs - I'd throw them and he'd jump up and catch them. He could go for longer than I could. I lost him in January this year (so coming up on a year) and as I say it hadn't snowed for a couple of years so he completely missed out. I know it's going to be heartbreaking if it settles this year, knowing that he should have been here for it (was just about to turn 8 when we lost him suddenly to cancer)
