Trying to place a song but I can't, and it's driving me nuts!
« on: February 07, 2013, 09:12:27 AM »
Last Sunday I was at K-Mart and this song came on the radio that I half-recognized. I know I have heard it before- I think it either came on the radio earlier that week or I just kind of absent-mindedly clicked on a related video on Youtube, or something like that.

I can't really give any lyrics or most of the content of the song, since I only really got a clear listening of the beginning. It sounds like a late-80s or 90s alt band, but it could have definitely still been newer than that. The band had a female lead, so I was thinking either the Cranberries or the Pretenders. I could definitely be wrong on both of those. (I consider myself a pretty big Cranberries fan, though there are still a lot of their songs that I haven't heard yet. As for the Pretenders, I used to be obsessed with Back on the Chain Gang and Brass in Pocket when I was in 5th grade but I'm not as familiar with their other stuff... I always said I would start listening to them again though. My dad used to play their music a lot when I was growing up, but I don't remember him playing this one at all.)

Anyway, it starts off kind of quiet, with a very long note or two kind of "whooshing" but still sounding really mellow and quiet. Then the female lead lets out a high pitched "YEEEAAHHHH" and then the guitars and drums start up. The "yeah" sounded like it might have been harmonized, so I don't know if this is an all-girl group or if that was just studio goodness.

I know that isn't really a whole lot to go on and you can see why I can't just Google the one lyric I know! I get the feeling that once I find it I'm going to feel dumb because it's a song that I probably am familiar with and should know.

I just can't place it though!

Any thoughts, ponies? I've been sitting on it all week and I'm still stumped!

The female lead throws me off.  Are you sure it sounds like something from the 90's? There are a few semi recent bands with females on vocal that come to mind--like skillet who have both male and female vocals :)

Hmm... I'm not sure but I hope you can find it! If I hear anything like that on my radio at work I'll share it.

Hmmm ... I can think of a LOT of songs that start like that, with female leads.  Anything else you can think of to go along with it so we can narrow it down?

I think I know who you mean!!!!

That 'yeah' sounds abit like Annie Lennox at first, but there is male and female vocals in the chorus................I am sure I have it on cd somewhere and I maybe able to tell you who it is..............

I forgot to mention that the other artist I was thinking of would have been Annie Lennox or the Eurythmics! This sounds about right actually... I didn't think of the possibility of it being a high-pitched male, but it very well could be.

I'm afraid that that's the only part of the song that I can remember right at the moment... I tried to give it a listen when I heard it, but my mom was talking to me and I got really focused on what I was shopping for so I didn't really get a chance to focus.

Maybe Halestorm's I miss the Misery? it sort of whooshes at the beginning before she belts it out.

ETA: that's more of a hard rock band, though. Maybe not them. I love a musical mystery!

I just Youtubed it and sadly that isn't it, but I find that I really do enjoy the song too! :frolic: My favorite thing about "musical mysteries" as you put it is that you DO discover new music along the way, and I'm more than cool with that!

The sound I'm looking for sounds a little more poppy though.

I have no clue. From your description it could just as well be B*Witched (I loved them as a kid). I had to laugh at the high-pitched boys comment though, BeeGees anyone?

OMG YOU GUYS I FOUND IT.

It's Thorn in my Side by the Eurythmics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj6hjz_2uig

I don't know why I was thinking it started out quieter than it actually did or that it was more rock than '80s pop, but what was really stuck in my head was the "YEAHHH!"

Add the Eurythmics to the ever-growing list of artists that I've always wanted to get into but am just too lazy so I only know a handful of songs. I'll stick them there right under the Pretenders.
