WIP Yeah French Toast! Help!
« on: March 31, 2013, 01:05:59 PM »
Yeah French Toast! is my first custom. Dyed her using Lemon Yellow Rit dye, patched her gouges with Sculpey III and re haired her using hair from a dollar store fashion hair extension hairband toy.

Well, her hair is really stiff, and I know I made my hair way thick when I haired her using my rehair tool. Now I am afraid to style and cut the hair. What kind of hair did I use on her anyway???
I think I want to do straw curls but this hair seems to stiff? to even take to curling this way.

IMAG0242

This is my first custom, first rehair and repaint. I'd love to finish her.

It sounds likd you might have either used polyprpylene hair or kanekalon hair, it looks more like the latter so you can boil perm the hair into ringlets, it is difficult but achieveable, just tie the hair round pencils with elastic bands and pour kettle boiled water over the hair part, leave over night somewhere warm and you should be done :)
By the way you can double or tripple up on the amount of hair you wrap around each pencil so you use less pencils and space on the ponies head- hope this makes sense :)

Thank you so much for the advice!! Do you think I should boil curl before painting or afterwards? Curl then cut? Or do the curls sort of control themselves and I won't need to trim after they curl?

The color is very nice but I seriously doubt I will ever use this kind of hair again.  >_< It's more for experienced or veteran customizers in my opinion.

Yea, it's pretty hard to work with stuff. Not fun to use even as someone who's been doing this for awhile!! I'm a fan of nylon and monofiber. Sometimes saran. You might try to go to a local beauty supply---they have lots of hair choices there. Or always online too!!

I style the hair after I'm done painting---make sure to SEAL the PAINT!! I have gone through the horror of spending a few hours on paint and having it melt off with a boil curl because I forgot to seal!!!

Good luck, make sure that water is REALLY REALLY hot!! You should be fine!

Makes sense!  There are lot of places for hair around here but I went with the dollar store toy section because I didn't want to spend much if I failed in my re hair job.  >_<

Super hot water won't kill the Dullcote? I've dyed her with Rit powder and hot water, and when I baked her with Sculpey III then coated her a few times with Dullcote. I wasn't sure what the next step was since a few different sites do things there own way.

I haven't started painting her but I did plan out her cutie mark ( now I am thinking about adding a tiny "pat of butter" onto her rump with Sculpey III after I paint her toast slice ). Thanks for all the advice, especially for such a custom noob like myself!

Nope! Dullcote and MSC both stand up to boiling water. Triple Thick Gloss does too. I guess it's understood not to place the pony IN boiling water--I don't know if the sealant would handle that LOL!

Sounds awesome! And for a first re-hair you did AMAZING!! I'm proud of ya!

Quite a few of us have a TON of stock of hair and I know some might be willing to trade a few hanks for baits/customs/ponies. Never hurts to ask in the hair trade threads or in another topic. It makes it easier to try different hair types out before you feel like you are dedicated to buying a whole bunch.

  Thank you ~ I used my own self made reroot tool. I know some hanks I plugged into her head were pretty thick and I almost ran out of hair because I used so much.  -_-

I have some Dollyhair nylon ( the same hair used on factory ponies ) that is on order, it hasn't shown up yet. From the look of other's custom ponies, the hair is softer and easier to style?

I started painting her toast cutie mark a few minutes ago. Now to try and replicate the Hasbro eyes.

I normally do the boil perm first before any paint work just because I have found the paint has come off, although I don't normally seal my work because the acrylic paints I use seem to never come off. Plus I heared that someones paint job peeled off after a boil perm, to be on the safe side I would recommend to boil perm first, no harm that way.
Although if you use my method and pour the hot water from the kettle over the hair you should be ok, just make sure it doesn't touch your paint work, also make sure the hair is laying down the way you want it to be set when drying :)

 Thank you LoveLauraLand! I think I will use your method, I have a coffee pot that I usually just use for hot water for tea and such. I'm not a hot coffee drinker. It should be easy to just boil eight cups and slowly pour from the coffee pot onto the straw curls rather than dunking the hair in a bowl or something.

I would think it would be the steam from the hot water peeling paint?

It can be steam or the hot water touching it causing the paint to peel. Or not sealing it can cause it. I try to rehair when I'm done and after sealing because I've gotten paint in hair before and it't been pretty tragic (I mean dunked the hair in paint accidentally). It's very annoying to seal with spray seal and hair all over the place too, though you can try and wrap it up in paper towel and tape it (I've never gotten that to work) There's no "right" way to do it---we all do it differently!! I will rehair beforehand if it's not a full body repaint. I change my methods to fit what I'm doing too.

This hair is pretty aggravating to work with  -_- I can't wait for the Dollyhair to arrive. I guess it's good to have a plan of action before actually working on her.

It's super helpful and really wonderful to have some experienced customizers offer tips and tricks, I really appreciate everyone's willingness to help out! <3
