Shipping food to AUS
« on: May 24, 2012, 10:37:11 PM »
Hi! Sorry, weird but quick question. If I wanted to ship some candy as a surprise to a friend in Australia would it get held up in customs? I don't want it to get bogged down.

I heard that Aus is meant to be strict. But people have sent food to me and I've had no issue. It was pretty quick to arrive actually. :)

Australia is very strict, but if it is in its packet it will be fine.   It may be best to avoid nuts or seeds though.  They may stop those just to check them.

I'm sure candy will be fine. It's not AUS but I did send a whole bunch of candy to the US and it got through fine. Maybe you could get hold of some sort of customs hotline to check?

Australia isn't the US though.  While I agree most candy will be fine, you can't compare the two countries.  Australia has an extremely strict quarantine.  Costco in Australia is constantly having stuff blocked for import.

Like I said, if its in a packet and free of nuts or seeds you should be ok though.

Dairy and meat products tend to get blocked. My aunt lives in France and smuggled an entire leg of pork off one of her pigs over the other year in the back of her car (it was frozen, the journey let the massive thing defrost) :O

make sure the candy is in its original package and you should be ok. As others have said, nuts/seeds are a big no.

Canada is just as strict, if not worse :/

Can I just say that this story made me laugh, so cute!

Yah, people have me scared from Australia shipping stories. Good to know about the nuts and seeds thing. I will give it a try though, thanks everyone!

As others have said, be careful about nuts and seeds, but I would think that most processed candies would be okay.
