What is your geekiest MLP fact?
« on: November 26, 2016, 12:00:31 AM »
I love geekery and I especially love pony geekery, so I would love you to share your geekiest pony fact. Stuff like Bonnie Zacherle nearly didn't get to release MLP as the ponies didn't do enough, baby MLPs are 'made' from their mothers' reflection in a mirror, and that Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart Simpson) voiced Gusty and one of the Bushwoolies in the first MLP movie.

What are your favourite arcane and geeky facts?

The UK pony comic originally mixed up the names and identities of the Sundae Best ponies, which were already differently named from the US line, so creating major fun confusion.

The unicorn, Chocolate Chip (US, Coco Berry) got drawn under the name Sorbet Surprise (US: Sherbet) and thus had a whole story in which she, not Sorbet Surprise, was involved with the grapevine that told Sorbet Surprise all her secrets.

And if that isn't confusing enough, in a US promotional photograph for this set, Sorbet Surprise (US: Sherbet) is shown sealed on a card with the name "Cherry Berry" on the top corner. Cherry Berry is a name used in the UK but not in the US for this set - however it is used for the pink and neon yellow pony, known in the US as Crunch Berry.

Furthermore, half of the US cards for this set have names in capital letters and half in small case.

The US card and UK cards are different from the front but have the same image on the back, although I think the stories are different.

The UK pamphlets originally advertised them as Ice Cream Ponies, a name directly translated for the set in Germany, and advertised that they came with clips, when in Europe, they did not. The names are also muddled on this first pamphlet. Additionally adding to the confusion, Sundae best ponies can be made in China, Hong Kong (China mostly Europe, HK mostly US I think) and I believe Spain (NC).

In short, the Sundae Best Ponies don't know who they are, how to format their names, which card they belong on, where they were made and what accessories they have.

If anyone managed to keep up with that, you get a cookie.

Here, have some random facts about the cartoons.

The six Flutter Ponies share three VAs amongst them; Russi Taylor (Rosedust/Morning Glory), BJ Ward (Peach Blossom/Forget-Me-Not) and Nancy Cartwright (Honeysuckle). Lily either got no lines or got exactly one line; I'm still not sure f it's her that says "We can't do it, Rosedust" at the end of part three of The End of Flutter Valley or not..

Erebus (villain from "Bright Lights") is named after a character in Greek mythology; his name means "deep darkness" or "shadow". Somnambula's name comes from the term "somnambulism", i.e. sleepwalking.

I love threads like this :B

In the G1 episode Fugitive Flowers, Peter Cullen voiced the chief of the good guys and Frank Welker voiced one of the bad guys. This doesn't even remotely sound like a show with transforming giant robots.

David Wise's first episode to air was "The Revolt of Paradise Estate" which was the second to last new story of Season 1 and its first part was 45th of 61 new episodes.  Eight of the last 17 episodes of the series would be written by him across five stores, more stories than any other writer.  Michael Reaves would tie George Arthur Bloom for the most episodes written at 14 (not including the specials and movie).

Speaking of Reaves.  An undine, a salamander, and a gnome appeared in Flight to Cloud Castle with powers over water, fire, and earth respectively.  These creatures are the primary familiars of these Hellenistic elements.  Sylphs are the familiar of air, but are believed to be invisible which doesn't make for good television.  I guess the pegasi take their place as the air elementals.

Russi Taylor, the voice actor for Morning Glory, Rosedust and Cupcake was also the voice of the 1980's Strawberry Shortcake and is the currently the official voice of Minnie Mouse.

Out of 25 different stories for the My Little Pony and friends TV series the ponies are captured at least 13 times. :)

Does it count as a fact that the pegasus Megan rides in the intro of the series is Magic Star, an earth pony in the cartoons?

Peter Cullen and Frank Welker also had voice credits in My Little Pony: The Movie, as Grundle/Ahgg and Bushwoolie #3/Grundle, respectively.

That's right, folks, Optimus Prime was a giant, ticklish spider!
