What Would You Do in This Situation?
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:52:58 PM »
I was wondering what people would do in this situation.  Its kind of one of those issues thats hard to know what the best thing to do is.  A lady is giving away her childhood collection and has forgotten years of Christmas or Birthday money she had saved inside.

I voted I would write the seller as I think I would feel guilty keeping it. LOL

I would write to the seller. Tho if this happened in Finland the money would most probably be in our own currency (finnish marks) that was replaced by the euro ten years ago. It's not possible to exchange marks to euro anymore... So the money would be useless anyway.

Oh man that would be soooooo sad.  Our currency has stayed the same for so long.  I can see where depending on where you are that would be a huge disappointment...blaaaaa

I would write the seller, too. I would feel guilty if I didn't. But I wonder who would put $300 in a pony? Who would put ANY money in a pony? Maybe I should look through all of mine. XP

Honestly I would. Its a perfect hiding place.  Mine don't have cash.  I got this idea from a friend of mine that bought antique dolls all of the time and they would take a look under the heads and sometimes would find money there.  It was too old to use as sometimes it predated the civil war..but still so cool what you can find.  Others have found jewelry in dolls. So..toys and things were hiding places for treasures.

What I do is get a flashlight and when its dark in the room I can shine it through the pony and tell if anything is in there.  So far its a bust at my house.  :P

We had something similar happen at the Goodwill store I worked at.  Someone donated a bunch of junk from their daughter's room.  While we were sorting everything we found a diamond engagement ring hidden away in one of the boxes under the lining.  I don't know if she secretly got engaged and didn't want her mother to find out or what the story was behind the ring.  We looked over the camera footage but there was no way to find the woman.  And if it was a secret the girl must not have ever fessed up because we kept it for a long time waiting for her and she never came back. It was really sad actually.  They eventually sold it.  And the money went to their charity programs.  But still I always wondered what the story was behind that ring.  And I still sometimes wonder if someone out there is missing it.

So I voted to contact them.  If it was me and my money, wallet, ring, etc I would hope folks would return it to me.
I'm not really on here anymore. Email me if you need my for something.

I voted to send the money back, I'd just feel too guilty to keep that much. (Although that it a heck of a lot of money for a child to have squirrelled away and if we were talking about only 10 or 20 pounds I probably would keep it - and if it was jewellery I would definitely send it back)

i would contact the seller and be a lil more steathy about it.....you may find that the seller is just "reselling" ponys that are were not childhood toys or a friends or long since grown child..... ...in which point imo..a "flipper" doesnt deserve the "extra profit" of found moneys...now if its someone who is honestly selling theyre own childhood memorys cause they need the money then by all means send the money back..if they are selling them just to clear out theyre "old junk" again they probably dont need it back

thus my vote for passing it on to someone who genuinely needs the money

I have to tell you. I have watched kids age 4 get 100.00 bills for Christmas.  In fact in some of the families I have worked with over the years...the kids had more money than I did.  So thats why I picked that number. For me that is totally possible....that over time a child would have saved that much.  When I was 8 years old my grandmother gave me 100.00 but I opened a savings account with it.  The rest of my money was in a piggy bank in my room as a kid.  I saved up loads of cash too because, I babysat starting at age 12.  I didn't buy much with my money back then so I had quite a bit.  So I can imagine that say Firefly was your favorite pony and you kept her out in your room for many years..you could stuff 300.00 in her if you exchanged small bills for larger ones. I did that a lot as a kid.

Wow thats something about the ring.  One could think up all sorts of reasons it was there.

Contact the seller no question.  Money comes and goes, but you can't put a price on your integrity.
