Title: Are You A Good or Bad Pony Auction Looser?
Post by: hathorcat on April 10, 2012, 05:51:31 AM
There is an auction on ebay coming up that I simply "need" to win lol...[I know that attitude is not safe or sane but I think I have an auction addiction]... :P

My mum, friends and colleagues at work are willing me to win this auction as apparently I become like a kitten that got dunked in a puddle when I loose auctions...think stroppy child, huffy teenager, kind of thing...and I can be a little unlovable and unliveable with for a couple of hours to a week depending on the importance of said auction!

So let me ask you....are you as bad as this? Do you throw things if you miss out or simply shrug and move on...

Reassure me I am not the only crazy one here...

It's that whole rush thing though, your winning, your winning and then it goes splat in your face :throw:

If it's something I really want seriously badly I'm pretty much just like you... but of course I still am technically a teenager so me being huffy isn't so unusual lol.
I actually kinda judge how important the pony was to me after a loss, if I can shrug it off I won't be so desperate to find it again or bid so high. During bidding I try to keep my head and make sensible bids but ponies are such an emotional/important item sometimes that people can drive bids up insanely, and bidding early is the worst.

In fact, I've actually completely forgotten to bid on a pony I was stalking because I got distracted by something else, felt bummed out for a moment then moved on. Darn University work, distracting me from pony hunts! But I count it as more money to spend one another pony another day.

So in short, you're definitely not alone. When I lose out on an important pony I go into super pout mode but try to put it out of my mind with other things. It comes hand-in-hand with that heart pounding adrenaline rush when you bid and win, maybe I'm kind of addicted lol. :P

for me it depends what it was. like i tried to put in a bid last minute on some MOC pony wear i wanted, i waited to bid so i'd eliminate them bidding against me. and the time ended just as i was submitting my bid and i lost. i'm still upset about it. really angry!!!!!

otherwise i just go "oh darn it!" and move on.

I've been known to strop :P I got outbid in the last seconds of a My Pretty Pony auction and the things I said cannot be repeated here :P

I'm terrible when I really want to win an auction and then end up getting outbid.
Only good thing about me losing is that at least I don't have to pay a waytoohigh amount of money because I sometimes bid a lot to make sure I win...  I usually just try to stay away from auctions, it's safer for me and my lappy  :P

Most of the time, I am like *phew* because I know I have over bid my limit by a few dollars. lol. However, sometimes I get REALLY huffy. Like when I would consistantly lose Red Roses for like 5 dollars or less. But.....it just makes that time when you do win really sweet!

If I really want something, I'll be really upset. I'll walk away making words and go kill things in video games or something.  If I feel I can't live without what I just lost, I get really upset, eat ice cream, chocolate and wine. :)

The only time I was visibly upset about losing was when I got outbid on Baby Splish at the last second.  It is so rare to see her for sale that I felt like I really screwed up.

I don't think I have ever successfully won a my little pony auction. I've gotten most of my rare ponies on here because I am TERRIBLE at auctions and very unlucky.

I'm mostly a good looser. It depends on the imortance of the auction though. About a month ago I lost an auction with NBBE Baby Gusty that I was SO sure I would win. Was kinda depressed after that.

Actually, I don't really get upset. One little cuss, and it's over. :) Granted it's annoying to get outbid by what appears to be 50 cents, but OTOH you don't really know if they actually outbid you by 50 dollars. I just bid what I want to spend, not a cent more, because once or twice I've bid more than I wanted to with that competitive "IT WILL BE MINE, NOT YOURS, a****z!" thing going on in my  head, and felt great relief, financially speaking, upon losing. I'm sure the seller was happy, though.  :P

I think everyone gets mad about it! I'm still kicking myself for missing some auctions, but you live to bid another day. Usually every 1 in 3 pony related auctions I actually place a bid in, I will win. Sometimes I throw in the towel because the price went too high or I get outbidded last 2 seconds. So the odds are in my favor still and I don't care to over pay so it's just as well.

I suppose someone with an unlimited budget on a one of kind item would be pretty angry to lose. The one time I will never forget is I was bidding on this one of a kind antique fraternal regalia that wound up going over $100. and I had to drop out. I'm still kicking myself for not sucking it up and bidding. $100 isn't bad for a victorian era heirloom that was unlike any other regalia out there and never will ever see again...ARG. Getting mad thinking about it!

There are a  lot of snipe bidders in pony related auctions... more so then any other kinds of auctions I've experienced. It can be more competitive than vintage/antique clothing or character figures. Which strikes me as odd. Must be a lot of pony collectors out there!

I tend to feel more disappointed than angry when I lose an auction so most of the time I'll only do BIN or buy now on trademe.

I think I do pretty well, and really only my hubby gets to see my reactions to losing ebay auctions.

If I lose because of something stupid I did, like forgot it was ending or misjudged my bidding amount or missed it during my searches, I go through an "ARGH!" stage every time I think about it. Then I kick myself, sigh, and tell myself it'll come around again. Eventually.

If my max got fairly outbid, I handle it much better. I'm still sad, but I tell myself that's how the game is played and I got beat :sleepy:

I was A LOT worse when I used to watch the auctions end. My heart would race, my blood pressure went way up, I couldn't concentate on anything else, and it took me awhile to calm down after it ended, even when I won.  If I lost, I felt really badly.  So 99% of the auctions I bid on are done through a sniping service so I don't have to babysit each auction.  It's REALLY helped with my ebay anxiety, not to mention I don't have to set alarms or stop what I'm doing or sneak a peak online during work :D

I get a bit sad when I lose and angry too, but I just go over it fairly quickly. I usually win, actually lol but when I don't is either because I stopped - the price went a bit overboard to me - or someone snipped it at he last second.

I am so pleased so many of you are almost equally bad loosers lol!!! Thanks guys - I do have visions of pony collectors throwing little temper tantrums across the globe now...we have probably all upset one another over auctions in the past I guess...maybe I ll spare a little thought for those who dont win when I do as how they feel will be how I do when they out bid me!

*Off to stalk that ebay auction....*I MUST win*....no extreme attitudes here.

I'm a good auction loser most of the time but when I get mad about anything I don't do much fussing I sulk and grumble quietly. I've had to pass up enough auctions that I'm used to it I always console my self with 'well I wasn't meant to have that pony yet I guess.' these things usually come back

I think of the person who is going to be so happy to see their NEW PONY!  :)  After all, they were willing to pay more money than me.  Plus... who wants to stalk the brag threads to criticize unless you're having an extreme pouty fit!  ;)

P.S.  Which I have thrown more than my share of pouty fits until I realized it was probably a member of the community and then I couldn't help but feel happy for them. The only time I got really irritated is when it was a re-seller who scooped up nearly all the restore lots in a certain timeframe and I knew I would see those ponies a week later with hairdo's and a bath...

I am usually ok and bounce back after losing, but I can be a terrible loser. I am still grumpy about 2 auctions for my 2 pony grails I lost consecutively a couple of months ago.  I had tried to buy these ponies twice, once on Taobao, and another time on ebay and ultimately failed.

I think my problem is that I got my hopes up too early.  I had thought I had secured them from the Taobao site, so I was dancing for joy and was soooo incredibly happy. About a week later I was informed they were out of stock and I actually bawled my eyes out when someone else bought them (all of them, there were multiples).

And they only bought the extras to sell on EBay too! Those could have been mine! Then I of course cried when I lost them a second time on ebay.

I am a crybaby lol. My poor husband has to deal with crazy old me.

I guess I react pretty well  :P If I really wanted to win an auction I'll be upset if the final bid was really close to mine, and maybe swear to myself. But I know there will always be another auction for the same thing eventually, and possibly even in better condition/for a better price, so I get over it quickly.

I actually started doing this because I had a feeling it would cut down on my impulse bidding. And it did, significantly. Now I just decide the most I'm willing to spend days ahead of time without entering the bid, and then I have all the time to ask myself "do I really want this, do I really want to spend this much?" and I have a chance to cancel that bid before it's made when I realize that since I'm not caught up in the competition of bidding, an item really isn't that important to me. And when I decide on my spending limit, either I get the pony for that or I don't, and I'm not bothered if I don't, because someone else was willing to shell out more than I thought the pony was worth.

If it's a bidding war on a pony that's exceeded my budget, I don't feel too bad. More money in my pocket, you know?

But if I log into Ebay and found I missed something on my Watch list because Ebay loves to send me emails AFTER the auction is over...yeah, I get a little upset.

I used to get so mad and then depressed when I lost auctions first starting out...the feeling never really went away until I won another pony! But now I very rarely lose...I snipe and I overpay. (I know, I know, I hate me too.)

If I don't win an auction I usually assume that it wasn't meant to be and that the money I saved not winning will be needed for something more important coming up. Sometimes it's the same item at a better price. Usually that's the case too! I do get bummed at first when I lose, but I move on quick.
Title: Re: Are You A Good or Bad Pony Auction Looser?
Post by: BlackCurtains on April 10, 2012, 01:49:23 PM
For me it depends on how I lost the auction.

If the pony goes for more money than I'm willing to put down (like Highlights very recently...) then I shrug and move on. I'm content waiting for the right deal, and I've had some very good ones, so I know they'll come eventually.

However, if I see an auction that's ending at a time I won't be around, or when I'll be sleeping or something, come back to it and see that it ended for way LESS than I would have bid - well, that makes me rage a little :P Especially, if it's when I'm sleeping and I don't make myself get up to watch the end. That's just... ugh. No one's fault but my own, I know, but very irritating. Why do I do that? lol

I don't bid on ponies often due to undisclosed flaws.  Its happened to me enough times to not want to take the chance anymore.  I only buy from people who really describe things well and for the most part I quit buying ponies for myself just recently. I don't think I would be a bad loser because these ponies show up again and again...at least the ones I like..so its worth the wait to get a better price for me.

It depends. If it was something I put a last-minute bid on, and I lose, then hey ho nevermind.

However...if it is an auction I've been watching for days and days, and I've saved the end date and set alarms on my phone and reallreallyREALLY need the pony and I lose, well, then I strop. Proper pouting, foot-stomping, chair-kicking strop. :lmao:

I never get into bidding wars lol. I try to keep my best bids for last but I'll only go about $1-5 (depending on the total cost of the item) above my max bid if I really, really want that item.

I feel sad if I lose a bid on something I really wanted but I get over it pretty quick!

I really don't mind being outbid; it just means that the pony sold for more than I wanted to pay, and I'll wait for another opportunity.  But I'll admit that I can get huffy and sulky if I just miss an auction or forget to bid.

I'm usually pretty philosophical when I miss out...  I might pout if I was outbid by a tiny amount, but then again, you can never really be sure if that winning bid was an autobid or not, so if I had put another bid on, would it just go on and on etc and be worth it?

I have got rather grumpy over a couple of overseas auctions though... there was a baby honeycomb (who I WANT so badly) in Germany... I'd asked the seller if they'd ship abroad and never heard back so didn't bid. The darn thing went for like 3 or 4 euro or something ridiculous!!! I spat a few curses that day!!

I think I'm a good loser. I use a sniping program. I put in my maximum bid and then just forget about it. It means I never forget to bid. If I lose, it's because it was more than I was willing to pay, so no worries there, someone else obviously wanted it more. Even if I only lose by 50c who knows how high their maximum was and I don't want to get into a bidding war. If I win, the program emails me to let me know. No fuss, no stress.

I was bidding on the most AMAZING Peru Posey from her original owner with perfect hair, perfect paint, perfect EVERYTHING (http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh568/sphatika/019.jpg). I got outbid with 2 seconds left, quite a bit over my max bid if I remember correctly and I was upset about it for a while. Everything else around that time I've pretty much moved on from but something about her just broke my heart  for the longest time, knowing she slipped away.
The good news is that I have a Peru Posey on her way here right now from Australia! She's also quite beautiful, so I'm very excited. :cheer:

I'd say most of the time I'm upset for maybe a day, sometimes up to a week! But I move on.
The only time I'll get angry at myself is when I forget to bid on an auction...Especially when it ends at an unexpectedly low price. ):

I'm a horrible loser, I yell horrible words at the computer and I get in a bad mood for hours, maybe even a couple of days. I've given up with eBay for this reason. I hesitate too much with BINs, I missed out on a Greek Cotton Candy at $34, because I was hesitant.

Oh when I win I let everyone know, clearly I rarely win any auctions lol.

Such a silly mistake only done it a few times! xx

Nearly! Luckily I've noticed and amended my bid LOL

I like lovesbabysquirmy's way of looking at it, I'll try that :D

Also, I've started using a sniping tool so I can put in the amount I want to bid and forget about it, then if I win it's a nice surprise and I don't end up paying more than I wanted to pay due to bidding wars ;)

It largely depends. If it's something I want, and I lose... yah, I do get a bit sour. However, in a recent auction that I was trying to win so hard for a dear friend of mine... I felt horribly down in the dumps about it. He's assured me everything is okay, but to me, it feels like I let him down.

I agree it depends on the item. Of course I get upset if it something really rare. Though the time when I do bid I have been able to win some great things. I win and lose some. I agree with its not meant to be it won't happen.

I'm usually a pretty good loser, aside from the general frustration anyone feels at being sniped. I'm pretty optimistic, so I just think that if it wasn't meant to be, then it just wasn't meant to be. There are always other auctions out there.

However, after my last semester was over, I decided to buy five "reward ponies" that I really wanted as positive reinforcement for doing so well in all of my classes. (I always get good grades, so I always treat myself. I needed five ponies because I was taking five classes.) I was originally looking at SS Ribbon, SS Buttons, Chuck E. Cheese baby, Dazzle Glow, and Bright Glow. But it must have been because it was so close to the holidays because I got sniped on every single one of them except for Ribbons. One of the GNSs I ended up being outbid on the last second by one cent! I moped and griped after that one...

I ended up instead with Ribbons, Bow Tie, and a Glory, Strawberry Surprise, and Lemon Drop from the same seller that ended up being kind of in crappy shape.
