How do you finish your feathered wings?
« on: March 01, 2012, 02:25:28 PM »
I get building wings in layers and all that, but what do you do on the "front" where your top and bottom layers meet? I've basically alternated small feathers for either side but I'm not sure that I like it, I just can't think how to do it differently so that it would look OK! The rest of it I'm really happy with.

If I change it then I need to be fast as obviously the apoxie is already on there.

This is something I haven't quite mastered yet. What you've done looks pretty good:)

I blend my clay along the front so it's just smooth and hasn't got individual feathers.  And then sometimes I'll add a little very small feather texture.  That's how it is on real birds, they have very small feathers there that lie smooth.

Thanks Naylastar, they're my first attempt (I've done one set of bat style) so I'm very pleased!

Bladespark, that's a good idea! I've just rubbed at mine with some water and although I can't smooth them completely, they do look much better. I'll see what they are like when they're dry and sand them if necessary. I like to think that my feathers are pretty small and thin, but I certainly couldn't make them that would lie smooth, so blending the clay is a good compromise. :)
