Talk to me
« on: June 16, 2012, 09:09:21 PM »
internet browsers - right now on my desk top I am running the last version of Firefox before 12 (I think that is the number), on Thoth lap top we have the newer one.  But it seems slow and clunky.

So what is a good browser that has things like spell check and tabbing but does not slow down your computer?

Also using Thunderbird for our email, they keep asking me to update, is it worth it or is there something better?

Thanks and passes out rum to all who help.

I like Firefox the best, but Chrome is decent, too.

Another vote for Chrome. I tried Firefox many times on various computers and systems and it was always bugging out for me. Chrome bugs out every now and then but in general I´m really happy with it. I usually have it on as long as my comp is on and it's bursting with tabs so it´s not like I´m not pushing it. Crashes extremely rarely (for me at least) so I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Firefox guzzles down RAM and is very slow. Chrome is much, much better.

You can just use email in the web browser instead of using a separate program like Thunderbird. I do all of my email via Gmail, and all my accounts are forwarded to one inbox, which makes my life a lot easier.

Opera has mouse gestures which speed up browsing, a lot. You can open new tabs, close tabs, open tabs in a new window, refresh pages, open tabs in the background, etcetera, all with the mouse, you don't even have to touch the keyboard. It also has a built in email client which is pretty good, and a built in IRC client, which is not so good. Its built in torrent client is about as good as the IRC client.

People say 'but it doesn't support all webpages!', it does, you just have to make two mouse clicks to make it work. Right click on a blank spot on a page, select 'edit site preferences', go to the 'network', and change the 'browser identification'. If you change it to 'Identify as Firefox', or 'Identify as IE', it will work with most pages. I've yet to encounter a page that won't work after I set Opera to identify as Firefox or IE.

Firefox is a resource hog, Chrome is really bare bones, whereas Opera is minimalist out of the box, but you can do a lot with it if you spend ten minutes tweaking things. Give it a download, and spend some time with it before you go 'this sucks', it really is the best browser on the market, despite only having a 2% share.

Yup Chrome for the Internet, Thunderbird for personal emails and *ready to duck the fakies" Outlook for work emails!

Like many people, I have tried all the other browsers and email clients and personally I find Chrome the easiest to work with...I am not a massive fan of Thunderbird but I am yet to encounter something I like enough to switch so I would recommend Chrome but I hope there are better email clients that people can suggest for us both to try!

Thanks gang, okay next two questions - how hard is it to remove firefox and is it worth it to do so?  And has anyone who use Thunderbird tried the upgrade and had it work well?

Chrome without a doubt.  I switched from Firefox and never looked back.

Removing Firefox is as easy as an uninstall. Though it's always good to have an extra browser lying around: sometimes, some things just won't work on one browser, for whatever reason. I would keep it around, and if you want to uninstall it to save hard drive space, you have bigger issues than browser choices.

I do all my email through Gmail, so I can't tell you about Thunderbird! I'm sure someone here can, though.
