Make It Work!
« on: March 01, 2012, 04:46:48 PM »
Okay so i thought this would be a good thread to start. We ALL know things don't always turn out the way we want but we've got to figure out a way to make it work. Share your "make it work" moments! I'll start.

why it works- scales shimmer under water

This is a great idea for a thread!  It's encouraging to see how well ponies can turn out even when things go wrong.

Problem? Weird green staining.
Fix? Paint a gradient and pretend that's what the plan was all along.

Problem?  Cat ran off with the pony and left some tiny toothmarks.
Fix? Patch the damage and make the pattern cover it.

Problem?  Bait had a hole in the head and an off-center tail right out of the box!
Fix?  Sculpt a flower and add hardware!  (Okay, probably not the cleverest idea...)

Problem? Pink stains on the bait that just keep popping up!
Fix? Make the pattern cover problem areas (even if, in retrospect, that decision made the face look a little spooky from some angles).

yay, this thread has finally come into existence!

problem: my very first custom's hair didn't wanna lay flat either
fix: braid it so the regular black hair would pull down the unruly white a bit :)

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

problem: the mask for my mardi gras pony originally had a hole for the horn to go through to hold the mask on, but it shrank when drying and the horn no longer fit in it
fix: I broke off the top part of the hole for the horn, and because the mask shrank, it sort of clips on to the face and holds itself on. Turned out pretty well anyway  :P

I might haz some

Starlite:
Problem? Permanent ink marks on the white body. (Why I usually do full body repaints...) But, I was set on using the original white body color so, I did kind of a "milky way" design with sparkles and stars throughout the body.

Captain Jack Sparrow:
Problem? Cocoa brown mohair never arrived, so I had to IMPROVISE with left-over regular mlp hair, and the "natural" colored mohair. >____<
Struggle? Had to keep adding more and more extra plugs to keep the hair from being too thin, couldn't use too much of the mohair otherwise his hair looked gray, so I had to trim a lot of it back, which still made it feel too thin.

Hades design...
Problem? The face paint. Couldn't seem to get it work, at all. Ever.
Solution? NEON PAINTS!!! lmao. neon red and pink tied it all together, and also inverting the colors of the irises and pupils.

Kingdom Hearts II Riku:
Problem? DAT HAIR. OMG. Getting it to cooperate, and figuring out how to get it layer and lay flat correctly.
Solution? Ancient Chinese secret...

Dream Deity:
Problem? Dat face. The paint. Took days upon days of screaming and bouncing it off of brick walls to get it to layer the way I wanted.

No pics, but I swapped heads/tails of a Starsong and Star Catcher with fabric wings.  (never again!!)
Problem #1: gaps in the necks.  Solution, both are getting beaded necklaces.
Problem #2: The whites don't match so the heads/bodys don't totally match.  Solution, the ultra cool hologram glitter paint.  Silver for one, gold for the other.  I sooo need to find the camera!

Problem: My tan dye came out an ugly brown.
Solution: Go for the gusto and dye the sucker black to hide the ugly brown!

Her eyes are so fun to do, and so easy, since they don't need to perfectly match. I learned though that if you have the pupil up against an edge that isn't lined in black, it looks... not good.. I like it better when the pupil is up against the eyeliner.

Problem: First custom and sliced neck badly (also got distorted by me tugging)
Solution: Added a diamond necklace to cover up the unsightly neckline but add all important bling
