« on: November 08, 2023, 05:18:31 PM »
Hey all! i figured since i am nearly done with my first g1 custom (only need to rehair!) that i would ask,
do you prefer customs signed (on hooves) or left normally? i do not plan on selling her right now but i might in the future.
what do you all think?

I always sign my customs and I keep the majority. It's like signing any other artwork. I usually just paint and seal it under a hoof.

What BC said! I sign with my initials and the year - even if it's something I decide to keep it's nice to be able to check when something was made. And if you plan on selling or giving away your customs as gifts or whatever, it's a good idea to sign so that there's some way of identifying customs if they pass hands in the future.

I think all artwork should be signed! :) I've got one or two mystery-artist customs from eBay that I so wish the artist had signed. Plus even if you keep them it's still nice to see your signature on there, I think.

i was thinking of using the paper slip idea for restoring and put my socials in there if anyone decides to open her up...
i think just initials would be too vauge though.

I think it's a personal choice of course, whatever makes you feel most comfortable! But I've seen way too many 'who made this? who's the artist on this, there's no mark' posts to risk leaving my ponies totally blank! I like to leave my name under the hoof, as well the date completed, and sometimes I'll put the pony's name if I've picked one! Usually they get a little heart too, just for fun! I've also seen people sign on the belly, and I think Uffjulieta (misspelling her name I think) would sign their non-display side as I recall!

It's funny, but even a few years out, I start forgetting who made what pony, and so I'll often see a pony I recognize in the 'who made this' posts, and I just ... go blank. Even with very popular customizers! So famous or not, I think it's always a good idea to sign your work, even if it's just a screenname!
