Who's your Fave? 2004-06 Spring Basket Pony

cola:
I'm back! Really soon it seems  :P I really like this line of ponies, however the distinguishing the good from the meh in these sets feels a little too easy. I think there's a little bit of something for everyone, I really would have liked to have these as a child. A few ponies, a few accessories, it feels like an MLP starter set. I think this style of release should have continued, I wouldn't have minded seeing more basket style sets, with different seasonal theming.

These are very clearly intended to resemble Easter Baskets, however they're not really called Easter Baskets, instead "Spring Baskets". I think this slight name change was pretty smart on their end, it didn't label the toy as a specific holiday and it helped separate the competition within the toy line (Easter and Egg related ponies being released along side the baskets). I imagine this also had some sort of internal retail related benefit too- perhaps it is to avoid the seasonal display fees, if these could have also been put up in the toy aisles instead of on displays with other seasonal items? Some antics.

Each Spring Basket included a bucket and lid, 3 Ponies, brush(es), a set of accessories, fake grass and promotional pamphlets. (For some reason my 2005 set smells of bubble soap, like the kind you blow out of a bubble wand.) All of the accessories in these sets are repurposed from previous sets. It's good to see the set comes with a basket/bucket to store all the toys when your done playing :)

Some ponies where rel-released later and have a backcard, however none of these sets include a backcard story or information about the ponies. Instead, the backcards only had information about what was included in the package, advertisements, and copyright.

I think there's some clear good and bad picks out of this line up, at least in my opinion. I truly don't have a big heart for 2004's basket ponies, but I actually quite like the accessories. It's not that the ponies look bad necessarily, it's more so about their marks. I think these were, maybe some of the cheaper designs (Matte, few hair colors, whatever the marks were doing), but for around 10-20 USD- it's not a bad deal whatsoever. I'm sure someone has a really big soft spot for this set. I am biased for the colors of the ponies, I like Wishawhirls colors and I think Bubblecup is pretty sweet as well. I have the accessories from this set and Bubblecup, they're very enjoyable! The accessories come from the Bloomin' Blossoms shop I believe, but they're recolored. They have a couple variations I believe, and the quality is the same as far as I know (good thing). I really need to clean up my pony so I can display her, hah.

2006's set I think has easily the best ponies by design. Although the poses might have some mixed reception, I really love the colors here. I can't say the same for the accessories exactly- I think they cheapened out a bit here. I would rather have these than no accessories however, and I am a sucker for a good fashion set. No skirts, or gowns- just the shoes, glasses and jewelry. I didn't research how soon this set came out, I would assume it came out alongside or after other sets that used these accessories though.

2005 Is somewhere in between. I like this line up of ponies quite a bit, and there's a fair amount of accessories. This time the accessories are recolors from Cotton Candy Cafe, they feel like they could easily fit inside your Cafe alongside the original set. I think Lulabelle is sort of what sells this set for most people, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Lulabelle will win or come in a close second. Maybe I'm delusional- I get the impression she's loved pretty well. It's not that the other ponies aren't pretty though! I think they're cute. I could be mistaken, but this might be the last or one of the last sets to include friendship charms.

I think between the sets; 2004 has the best accessories but just okay ponies, 2005 has good accessories and good ponies, and 2006 has okay accessories and some of the best ponies. Of course, all in my opinion- I would love to have these all the ones I'm missing in my collection eventually. I really love these ponies, I think this line or set theme is one of the best in G3. It highlights the strengths of the house/building sets, but skips the building part.

Leave a Whisper:
I love these Easter basket ponies. They're so beautiful.  I voted Wish-a-whirl, Lavender Cloud, and Spring Breeze. But I love Bubble Cup and Lulabelle too. I own Wish, and I'm still looking to get Lavender too. When it comes to holiday ponies, G3 can't be beat.

starbritesprinkles:
Bubblecup has the best Cutie Mark. Lullabelle has the best color scheme/pose combo. Spring Carnivale has the best color scheme. Runners up Garden Glade for pose/color scheme and Lavender Cloud for color scheme/Cutie Mark.

BlackCurtains:
Wish-a-Whirl is one of my favorite ponies ever. I love her matte body and blue and orange is the best color combo :cheer:

Griffin:
I love Wish-a-Whirl and Bubblecup! Garden Glade, too, but not as much as the other two. The accessories also look like something I would've enjoyed as a kid. (I don't really collect accessories, so I always judge them by what I would've liked to play with. )

The 2006 set is also pretty great, if I think of spring and Easter, those colours and designs are precisely what I'd expect. But I just love the bright coloured G3s more.

The 2005 set is pretty boring in my opinion in all aspects. I like Lulabelle's pose but that's about it. :D
