there are so many instances in g5 where it feels like they are trying to sell toys but then don't
they went out of their way to give all the dragons names when most of them are pretty much just background characters with no development they also made the dragons more pony like and even though it was stated that it was just because they wanted to reuse the pony rig for the dragons it also makes them look a lot more toyetic as a result it seems like they were using the dragons to sell toys yet they only made one of them as a toy as far as we know
the auracorns and blue thunders (or whatever that one pegasus band was called I dont remember) have a design similar to that one mane 5 set with the translucent glitter plastic but they don't have any toys made of them at all
ruby jubilee seems like the kind of character to have one of those talking/singing princess type toys made of her (similar to pipp/songbird serenade) and her design is really pretty but all we got for bridlewoodstock was just some dress up toys of the main five
they brought back the breezies for pretty much no reason they were always made to sell toys but they did nothing in terms of toys with them and the show would be pretty much the same without them the night market could have just been a unicorn thing
posey/the dreamlands are a pretty easy nostalgia cash in but no toys were really made of them (I know there is a mini world magic posey but im talking about mainline toys) posey played a huge role in the first make your mark special and it almost seemed like she was going to be a main character for a minute until misty showed up but she does not even get a basic brushable
why is hasbro trying to sell us nonexistent toys
-
I'm not even a g5 fan but if they would just put some toys on the shelves they could convert me

Do I like the g5 toy style? No. Do I want to purchase 1000 different new brushable pony and or dragon toys, unbox them and brush their hair? Absofreakinglutely
-
All of G5.
-
This is the main problem with G5: so many characters, so few toys of them. It was also an issue with G4, & G3 didn't even make Spike, let alone half the unicorns & a quarter of the pegasi...
Even G1's Tales didn't have every character made. The most common G1 Customs are of Teddy, Lancer, Ace, & Miss Hackney, so what does that tell you???

Because if they did make toys of more characters, they'd fly off the shelves!!!

Dippindot, you took the words out of my mouth!
Also SO many G4 characters. I still can't believe we never got a brushable Babs Seed. Or Fleur de Lis. The princess moulds always seemed popular so I'm sure Fleur would've sold well?? since she just used Luna's model but without wings.
(Also I typed this up earlier but apparently forgot to hit post? oops )

Fleur de Lis would have been so good!

KIRINS!!! And yaks, & more Hippogriffs, & more griffons!!!

Kirins!!! I wanted Kirins and griffons so much
-
G4 Lighting dust and the other washouts. There is plenty of wonderbolt stuff.
Plus the fashion designers Rarity recrutes : Lilly Lace, Star streak and Inky rose.
And the two unicorns from canterlot : Sunshine Smiles and Moonlight Raven.

YES!!!! I can't believe this has never been rectified!!!

My mother saw Sunny Starscout for the first time today. She is still struggling to understand a: how that is the core key pony character, and b: how there is literally no variety. Her response I think was actually, "ew!". And this is the person who bought me my first pony when I was a kid because she thought they were so pretty.
G5 suffers badly from variety and a bad choice of colour schemes for the main cast.
As for the Tales ponies, 100% agree.
There's also Lady Lessons who I feel was going to exist but then didn't.

agreed I like bright saturated colors but something about the g5 palette just turns me off I don't even know how to put it into words the g5 ponies just don't look as pretty as the mane six
-
Tbh I'd prefer Lady Lessons over Miss Hackney. I haven't really read anything w/ LL or seen that much of Tales so I don't have any "personal" stake in it... I just think Lady Lessons is cuter :B
Kitcatepic I know exactly what you mean!! Even though I'm not a huge G4 fan, and I'm as sick of the main 6 as anyone, their colours were so pretty together, both as a group and like, how their colours coordinated individually, if that makes sense? I'm not sure how to phrase it either but I definitely agree with you that G5's palette seems less.... something.

I would rather have LL too, just because I'm sure the school should have been her playset, and then ultimately wasn't. Though I do wonder if they migrated her colours and used them for Love Token instead...
I actually like quite a few G4 figures, although I'm sick of the Mane 6 and I don't like FIM. They may not have been super horsey but they were cute, and some had really nice colour schemes.
I don't think the G5 (and this may be true for some G4) pony palette choice is helped by the decision to make the packages dark pink/purple/magenta and white. It is especially bad with Sunny though, given her hair colour and the boldness of her body. The one we saw yesterday was far from the ugliest Sunny I've seen, but she looked hemmed in by the colours of her packaging and it didn't really sell her well.
-
I mean, they're just following the G4 playbook! Create dozens of named, interesting background characters, and then only release some of them, ever, often only in blindbag form. Hippogriffs got two toys, and it was a battle to even find them. Buffalos, griffons, dragons, breezies, changelings - you could rattle off so many important characters who had entire seasons devoted to them, and some of them never even got toys. Like, the entire last few seasons focused on the School of Friendship - we never got an Ocellus, a Yona, an Ember toy, and they were main characters! Make that make sense!
It feels like a continuing letdown with G5, because they are adding new species and characters SO early by comparison, and yet we are still stuck on the same Mane Six/core character release nonsense. I want more dragon toys! They clearly have the molds for them, so I don't see a lot of reason why they couldn't just release more colors of the same figure.

And I agree on almost everything G4 and G5. It needs some variety in the toys. There is so much they could (have) gotten from the Tv shows! I would have bought so much more :/
-
I don't care for G5, but as for G1 I think it's blasphemous that we never got a Moochick figure
I never got 'round to it but I've always wanted to customize a poseable Happy doll from Snow White into a Moochick; with some minor resculpting it shouldn't be too hard I think. He seems to come very close already as is.
-
I strongly believe G5 meant to have a lot of toys, but the first few ones sell so bad, they started to make bad decisions such as releasing Mane 6 in G5 style and then add in Minty, because immortal Minty is a meme. Instead of having faith in the new characters they have, the toys exes just think hard for the characters that will most likely to sell. They turn away G5 fans who want their favourite charactets and annoy G4 fans who think G5 look weird.
-
WingedDragon, I think you're right :( It really does seem like instead of wondering WHY the first few toys didn't sell, they just went "Oh well, we'll just pull out the old stand-bys, people always want Minty"... like, just assuming cuz Minty's popular that people will just mindlessly buy her up... stuff like that.
(alright, to be fair, when I saw that set I DID think "Okay, I might be tempted by this one if it turns up over here", but... xD still!!!)
I wish they'd try more G5 characters instead of redoing the "G4 model" as Snapdragon said... I mean, I don't like G5 much. I don't like the style. But I felt that way about G4 for AGES too and then eventually it grew on me! So maybe G5 could grow on me too if they'd only give it a chance. Because my other main problems with G5 are a) ENDLESS SUNNY and b) poor distribution/same few things everywhere. Maybe if we had less Sunny (and... Izzy? Izzy's the purple unicorn right?) and more of a variety of characters then I might be more interested in it.. Gah, I dunno. I'm rambling, sorry.
-
Y'know, I want to say this from the top of my lungs.
The characters that should have toys in my opinion which it would be these guys:
1. Weston (G1) - Reason: he goes so well with Spike (G1).
2. Student/Creature/Young Six - Reason: Did they really forget that they made ton of Spike figures yet no proper toys for these creatures. (I'd really like for a Smolder toy even so)
3. Most of MLP's minor characters (Like Ember, Garble, Thorax, etc.) - Reason: may not be needed but I'd thought it would be a good thing to add.
4. Whimsey Weatherbe - Reason: Even though she is a part-villian, she is a great character that should've made a toy.
I think these are my top picks. Although I was going to like include the Bushwoolies cousins and such but apperently there are prototype models of them so out of the question for that. unless if it counts.
-
I always wanted villain toys. Strawberry Shortcake was lucky to have them!
-
The moondreamers also had villan toys it seems like it was more common for villans to get toys back then
-
I think the Furbobs count. I want them too!
I'd love toys of the cartoon characters like Knight Shade, the witches, Tirac, the bees (I would kill for a Sting toy!), etc. Definitely a missed opportunity there.
-

DEFFO Furbobs!!!
I think this says enough about how much I want Knightshade!!!

Tirac would have been awesome!!!! Witch dolls too
-
blue thunders (or whatever that one pegasus band was called I dont remember)
"Electric Blue" is the name of the pegasus band - "Blue Thunders" is what Lauren thought The Wonderbolts were going to be called.
And yeah, while I hardly ever keep up with G4 onwards toylines (so I may end up thinking that a character never had a toy when they they did) I do feel that G4 and G5 have several choices of who to make toys out of, rather than just focusing on the mane characters.
I think the Student Six were underused in the G4 toyline, despite being kind of a big-ish deal in the show (like they almost felt like they could have been the main characters in a spin off that didn't exist, or something...)
I'm surprised that neither Ruby Jubilee or The Dreamlands had any G5 toys made for them, given that they were created for the 40th Anniversary (I'm assuming for The Dreamlands, but they have to be!), but even on their own they work as toys (especially Kitcatepic's suggestion of Ruby being a singing toy or something.)
Agree on G1 ponies like Knightshade and the Tales boys making sense as toys - the fact that they're ponies even makes it sound like Hasbro had no excuse...
And yeah, I see the appeal of wanting villain toys as well - G1 Tirek in my opinion really seems like a character who should have a toy of him somewhere, but apparently he doesn't...
Also, this doesn't really fit here, as it's not a character, but I feel that a toy based on G4.5 Twilight's star projector in Pony Life would have been beautiful. :lovey:
-
I wanted the Tales boys, and the remaining G3 unicorns and pegasus
-
toy manufacturing has changed so much over the past 40 years...
-
G1 Villains (I would've loved a Tirac and Catrina toy), Knight Shade, all of the boys from Tales, G3 unicorns and pegasi (every day I yearn for feeling flitter ; -;) and Sombra.

I'd definitely want toys of the furbobs I think they were a lot cuter than the bushwoolies also I wouldn't mind getting toys of the stonebacks as well I thought they were pretty cool looking

I grew up with G1 and there were a lot of characters I always wanted to buy in the store that never made it into toy form. Mostly it was the villains. My ponies alway fought dinosaurs or othe action figures. But it would have been nice to have the actual villains from the TV show and movies and even some of their non pony friends.
1. I wish they made the witches from the volcano of gloom. Reeka, Hidea and Draggle.
2. Danny - he had red hair just like me. I wish they made him like Meghan and Molly.
3. Tyrak and Scorpan from RAMC as well as the strattadons (those just ended up being dinosaurs from my collection)
4. Mr. Moochick and Habbit. They were in the original TV special, movie and multiple tv episodes. Surprisingly there was no mushromp playeset with a special pony.
5. Grundles- they were quirky and fun. And even in a few episodes of the TV show.
6. Catrina and Rep - Catrina was a really fabulous villain. Her outfit was so campy.
7. The Smooze - would have been cool if you could have bought the smooze. The ponies would have gotten ruined but it would have been fun.
If I could wish for playsets they never created…
1. Volcano of Gloom with the 3 witches
2. Princess Pony Castle - with a Queen Pony
3. Flutter Valley Playset - with a new princess flutter pony
4. The Mushromp with Moochick and Habbit + Pony
5. Rainbow of Light playset. A rainbow they could walk over into the clouds.
6 Sea Pony Waterfall and Underwater Springs playset.

I feel like Tirac, Scropan Stradons, Catrina and Rep weren't made because Hasbro literally considered them a one and done idea since we never saw them again.
Also I think that G1 was much more toyline driven than it was media driven. So even though you could buy almost every pony featured in the animation, Hasbro wasn't too set on making characters that only appeared in the show in to toys.
That being said, my favorite part of RAMC when I was little was the Moochick signing "A Little Piece of Rainbow opening the cabinet and shouting "Ugg a bug!"
I think not making a Moochick figure was a missed opportunity though
Gator, I love your creations. :lovey: :lovey:

The customs look amazing
I agree with what everyone is saying (especially proudfoot and knightshade!)
What came to mind for me was G5 Posey though. I suppose they only made one Sprout release though, maybe two if you count those cake toppers haha. I guess that's more of a G5 issue than anything else.
Would have loved to see more Tales characters too, like Ace, Teddy and Lancer maybe. I really feel MLP hit most the marks on cast diversity, up until G4. And G5. :lookround:

There was a playset called flutter hideaway for flutterponies but it was scrapped in favor of paradise estate

He's such a handsome pony. Maybe that chick who's doing the G2 Project will make him?

G4 neglected its toyline variety in favor of show tie-ins, but they could have had both! The show had so many background and one-off characters they could have just... made! But they didn't! It always frustrated me as a strange child who grew up with G4. So many characters i loved and wanted a toy of, my choices were Guardians of Harmony... which you can tell by the italics was not ideal (they're too fragile and thematically unfitting with the rest of the toyline but thats a whole nother post) or more often, absolutely nothing!
Cheese Sandwich, Soarin, and Spitfire got GoH "toys" but i think they deserved brushables. Really all the boys did. Especially after all Big Mac has done for us... I know he got one in the bulbous half-reboot but I feel as though that's a seperate beast? Later seasons that started getting really plot heavy would have made nice toys too, even if i know very little about them actually. Cozy glow would have been cool to see. and DISCORD! the weirdgirls would have loved having a little discord.
G1 has a lot too, and a lot of those characters would have never happened of course because the show wasn't that important to the line, but the witches and DANNY could have easily happened and sold decently. Moochick too! I would have liked to see Knight Shade but that's my bias.
