Moving with a collection?
« on: July 07, 2020, 05:08:53 PM »
It’s been a while since I was on here, hasn’t it haha.

So I am moving soon, and am a bit paranoid about moving with my ponies 😅 Does anyone have any tips? If it helps, the new house is about a 2 hour drive away from where I live now.

Put those ponies in a cardboard box! If it's not a far drive and you can unpack them fairly early on, you should be fine just putting them in there, but if you anticipate leaving them for a bit you can always wrap in tissue paper to prevent color transfer.

I used cardboard bankers boxes.  I put each pony in an individual plastic sandwich baggie (the ziplock kind) and tossed them in.  The only exceptions being unusually fragile ponies, like Summer Wings with wings.  The baggies will prevent their hair from getting tangled.

Ponies are very durable so don't worry too much. :)

i second the individual baggies :+) I personally don't like to keep them in there for too long, last to pack first to unpack that sort of thing. though its really unlikely, if the ponies do get water damage or any moisture gets in the bags they can grow mold. But I wouldn't worry too much about that, unless the place you're moving is rainy or in danger of getting boxes wet. If that is a concern for you, using plastic totes over cardboard boxes may be the way to go. for wingers/flutters/etc i wrapped each wing in paper towels carefully, then put the whole pony in a baggie.

Also agreeing with the baggies! I've done this once while keeping them in storage at my mother's house, and twice while taking them over planes in suitcases. (Like over 200 ponies this way, lol. Two suitcases.)
Sandwich bags work perfectly. I was always worried about them touching in heat and transferring color.

I'm moving too but only about 7 miles away. I'm just gonna toss mine in a box and bag up the ones with curls. My collection needs a spa day anyway and I'd rather do it at the new place XD

I'm moving this fall and i plan on putting them all in a cardboard box, wrap them with tissue paper and see if I have enough baggies to stuff them in. Good thing it's only a half hour drive.

I had to move on fairly fast notice so I just chucked everything into totes. Not the best way but with all the ponies and other toys and dolls it would have taken too long to properly pack them. The things in the totes that I didn't shove into my parents attic arrived fine so hopefully nothing too bad happens to the stuff that's packed away.

Id print out checklists of all your stuff and check it off as it goes into the box to minimise leaving things behind.

The only tip I have is, make a list of your boxes and a check list for packing them and receiving them, and for the love of everything, put your name on the boxes, in large marker! This goes double if you're moving with family, and especially if you're going to have roommates! Old friend didn't do this, and found out her MIB Barbie collection wound up unprotected, in a 3-season porch. She thought the boxes her collection was in were in her closet.

Also, if there's anyone in the family that's not on good terms with you helping you pack and you're getting rid of anything during the process, also label those boxes properly, so there can be no excuses of "I didn't know!" if the vindictive jerk decides to toss something you treasure. *side-eyes some of the posts on r/justnoMIL*
My creativity keeps running into a lack of time and resources.
I'm also available via twitter at @Kazzellin :)

So many projects!! What do I want to work on? :awake:

Oh, that's not too far, no worries! I moved my entire collection of 300+ ponies from the US to Sweden years ago. They all made it safe and sound packed in individual baggies within cardboard boxes and shipped through the mail. ;)

I wrapped the more fragile ones in tissue (undyed) paper, and the others I stacked on top of eachother for our last move. I think one came out of the move with a bent leg (she'd been in storage prior to that as I couldn't have my entire collection on display in our old house), but it's sorted itself out now. Made sure to unpack them as soon as I could after the move. :)

I also sew so I have a large fabric stash. So I layered my ponies and dolls in rows with fabric in between. It helped keep everyone from moving around and kept their hair nice and all the accessories intact for my dolls. Many other items I just tossed in boxes and they were fine. Definitely label each box!
