Fast Facts!

Know a fact? Share it here!

Poison dart frogs are not poisonous in captivity. The toxin comes from the insects they eat in their natural habitat. Since these insects are not fed to them, they are safe to handle and popular as pets.

When calculating percentages, you can swap the numbers.

7% of 50 is the same as 50% of 7.

Scalloped hammerhead sharks are shy & will swim away from scuba bubbles so divers who want to see them must use rebreathers. They often swim in large schools of 50-100 individuals.

The name “ferret” is derived from the Latin word furittus, meaning “little thief.”

A group of ferrets is called a business.

A group of monkeys is a troop.

A group of squid is a shoal.

A group of giraffes is called either a journey or tower.

Ostriches have the largest eye of all land animals. They are about the size of a billiard ball and larger than the bird's brain.

A group of Ostriches can be referred to as a flock, herd, pride, or wobble.

Usually the male Ostriches have darker plummage.  But in the case where no males are in the group, the dominant female with develop darker plummage. (At least, when I worked at Disney World they told us all the Ostriches on the Kilimanjaro Safari were female and one was black and bossy!)

Also, they're jerks.

ETA: On the Safari, to prevent egg laying--because Ostriches will lay unfertilized eggs like chickens--they put cement eggs out so that the Ostriches would think they already had eggs to care for.

Gang, shiver, frenzy, take your pick, but all 3 have been used to refer to a group of sharks. I prefer shiver, but gang is suitable for grey reef sharks, who, although they don't quite hunt in packs, do form a mob for hunting & eating. It works because any fish thinking they've escaped one shark may find themselves swimming right into the jaws of another...

In Utah you may use a crossbow to take common carp at any open water statewide. You may not use a crossbow to take any other species of fish.  So aim carefully, I guess.  :fish:

My hometown of Kenosha Wisconsin is the only Kenosha in the whole world. It's a mangled name from three different tribes that means "pike" "great fish" and "trout that come" because of the fish that pour into the lake from the St. Lawrence Seaway in the spring. The pike are there year round though and live in the lake.
