Off Topic / Re: Anyone who's written a book- quick question...
« on: August 14, 2016, 11:05:15 PM »
Thanks everyone. Have saved all your comments on a pdf and will read through them again later! When I've finished, what I'll do is give it a spelling and grammar check, and leave it until I know I've run out of plotline ideas to add to it!
Eventually I'm looking at publication, but before then I'm doing a few uni courses, possibly an MA at some stage, so am wanting to get as many of my ideas down as possible in some order, not just scribbled notes and chapters in random notebooks! Hopefully on my courses I can get some editorial feedback on some of it, then I will know if it is worth continuing.

Off Topic / Anyone who's written a book- quick question...
« on: August 14, 2016, 01:41:53 PM »
Just wondering, once you've written your first proper draft, how long do you leave it before you reread it and properly edit it? Some online advice says a fortnight, some say a few months, others say longer!
How long do you feel is long enough for you to read it again with a more objective view?
Almost finished my first draft of a children's book, and the words are just flowing at the moment.
(Have had loads of stories in the planning stages for years, realised life is too short and I need to get them written or I'll never get around to it!).
Thanks!

Wow. I've still got my red viewmaster, I didn't know they came in other shapes and colours? Was that just in America or did different ones appear in England or the UK?
My reels are : The Muppets, Scooby Doo (all about the Snow Ghost!), Paddington, Adam and the Ants (that's a majorly important Early 80s group, for all you young un's out there, not a cartoon!) and Buck Rogers!
I thought about selling it on Ebay a few years ago, but made the mistake of watching them all, and of course after that I realised it's not going anywhere!

Happy Birthday! Nice to know she can communicate the important stuff!

One of my biggest childhood regrets was getting rid of my SSC collection, and the original boxes! But I was only young. Then in adult life had to buy some back, but would love the original boxes, especially Orange Blossoms. I think their packaging was the best amongst the early 80s toys, which in general were much better designed than most modern stuff!
Hope we get this in England!

I only watch it for the dodgy scoring. And daft outfits. And cheesy backing dancers. And for the weirdest staging. And cheer at whoever gets  'Nil Pwa' as I used to think it was spelled. But also in the UK we've got the commentary of Graham Norton to keep us laughing too.

They're my first collecting love! Had 200 at collecting peak, mostly Colecos(not easy in England) , plus 4 softies, 4 TRUS (not sold here) and some Mattels and PAs, but have had to downsize to about 45 now, plus poseables and PVC minis. I collect black and asian kids. Wish I lived in America, you have all the TRUs and Babyland kids as well!

Might see that, I remember his ski jumping, I know he came last but he qualified to be there so can't have been that much of a flop in comparison to the rest of us!

I had a similar one in the 80s, they were the cheaper version! But still 80s pastel goodness. I still have my clip on small Panda, koala and tiny brown bear, and there were clip on fakies of Pound Puppies, Care Bears, Monchichi, and Cabbage Patch Kids from what I remember.

Yeah!! I loved that cartoon! And The Biscuits. Didn't realise there were toys!!!
I remember those!
Didn't know there was any Paw Paw merchandise, England and the UK tended to miss out on stuff like that! Now I've got the theme going through my head.

Gorgeous colour and gorgeous soft nose! Horse noses are so velvety! My mother has worked at a riding school (recently became a livery yard when owner got tired of taking all the lessons) for about 50 years, (and on a farm before that) but on low wages so she has never been able to afford her own horse. And I'm now allergic to horses (gave up riding at 14 because of it), but love seeing other people's!

England is hit-and-miss when it comes to schooling and autism, depending on local area as to what schooling there is, depends what your son's actual needs are, whether he's ok in mainstream school with or without support, or an autism unit attached to a mainstream school,  or does better in special school really. Varies a lot between counties and local council areas of counties. And also support such as respite, or holiday clubs or youth clubs, Autism support groups etc varies, you'd have to know what area it was then English people here in that local area could help you out! What are your son's specialist subjects or main interests? Anything suitable to be encouraged that might encourage him to be enthusiastic for a particular country?
Although you want to protect your children, emotionally as well as physically, also your son needs to develop resilience to change, for his future life when you both won't be there, and a move abroad could be part of that learning.  You won't know unless you try. It isn't like moving up a Nepalese mountain, or living in a Yurt in Mongolia,  I suppose.
(Says she, helpfully, having spent a long and tiring day at work trying to calm down a high functioning autistic teenager distressed at a weekend incident involving an Ipad and his younger brother's head, distress manifesting as 'Streetfighter' moves and an obsession with mentioning the word 'KOALA!' in a loud voice throughout all lessons!)

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Re: What Are Your Best Care Bear Memories?
« on: March 05, 2016, 10:15:23 AM »
I went to see 'The Care Bears Movie' when it came out, (Didn't know there was then a TV series until adulthood), mum said she'd take me to the film as long as I didn't start asking for all the toys... The mini film before the main film was a lousy Strawberry Shortcake short film which broke down and everyone was booing the projectionist. Loved the film animation although a bit soppy! Ended up going to the toyshop afterwards and coming home with the Grumpy Bear with ice cream PVC mini! Then added to that were a Friend Bear PVC mini, the Friend bear poseable, and then for my Birthday I got a small soft toy Lovealot bear. Sold them when I got to Uni and Ebay was becoming famous, but then bought replacements back about 6 or 7 years ago!  (Later collected most minis and sold a whole load of soft toys on Ebay to fund other collections, but have friend's sister's Funshine bear now too, that's not going anywhere...)

I had one as a child in the 80s but can't work out what it was. All I remember that it was a turquoisy blue, could have been a tennis racquet, could have been something totally different! Wish they would sell them again over here! So 80s...

I so wanted one of those as a child! I used to love gazing at them in the catalogue pages. Just looked them up now, and it was the first and second series charms I remember.
