Custom Funkos
« on: August 18, 2014, 05:03:07 AM »
I'm trying to sell some Funko ponies but am not having much success, so I figured maybe I'd just customise them instead. But before I start messing with a pony I could potentially sell, I figured I'd check if anyone has customised Funko ponies and could give me some tips?

Can they be baked to cure clay? (like original sculpey)
How do you remove the paint from hair, symbols, eyes?
Can they be painted with acrylic paint? (gosh I wish I had an airbrush)

Cheers  ^.^

UPDATE

I decided I'd customise my BonBon into Posey. I did try to remove the blue paint off her mane but gave up and just decided to paint it lol. I kept her body colour as a pale cream instead of painting her yellow (FBRs are not my fav) and I love Posey with blue eyes so I left those alone as well. A big and bold symbol and she's done, I love her!
She's a little patchy with factory imperfections and slight staining from painting mistakes (getting into places is tricky when they're so solid) but gosh I think she's cuter than BonBon.

I think if I can't sell the rest of my regular funkos they'll definitely all be getting a similar treatment!

UPDATE 2.0

Bubbles got an adorable little uniform top, generic without any logo. I mostly just wanted to try my hand at sculpting clothes, not specifically make her a mailmare or anything (plus I don't like ponies in hats). :P

I currently have two ponies part-way through painting (DJ & Octavia), and plans for three more!
After that I'll have to stop because this was about changing my existing Funkos so I wouldn't be tempted to 100% the collection any further. (I will have Rarity though, only letting myself buy from within Australia so maybe in 6 months time *dies*)

If anyone's interested in the products I use: Original Sculpey, Chroma A2 Acrylic Paints, Jo Sonja's Gloss Varnish.

UPDATE Tavia & DJ

Alright, here are the next two girls, Octavia and DJ Pon-3...
Disclaimer: Octavia's customisation is a joke :P

I'll be starting the next lot this weekend!

UPDATE #4

I wasn't going to customise my Lyra but then I decided to try some simple clothes really quickly. The painting is plain orange and brown, and I went a little crazy with the pushed up sleeve sculpting... not to mention something went horribly wrong and destroyed her eyes so I had to repaint them and went with a more matching orange. Whatevs, in any case here she is: (gah, imperfections, her plastic just stained so quickly!)

And Trixie, who is a character I really do not like at all, got bunny slippers and a beauty treatment face mask (with different size cucumber slices, sorry anyone with OCD). There was a horrifying moment when I snapped a bunny ear off during painting, but that was easily fixed. (also just saw smudges of paint I missed during cleanup lol)

I've only got one more to go, V.1 Rainbow Dash is getting a ball gown!

LAST LOT

Rainbow Dash in her silver-lined rainbow cloud gown...
(because I hate white paint and 'every cloud has a silver lining')

I have yet to custom one since I rarely go to the stores that have them and our walmarts don't carry them.. but I have a coworker who has custom them.

I would think the paint would be removed the same way as any normal pony but if you are afraid that acetone will melt the plastic then for like the eyes/symbols you can use extra fine sandpaper to get it off. As far as the hair I'd think just painting over it would just be fine.

I do believe you can use acrylic paint :) Fun fact, my coworker said that the mane is removable but you need to be careful and supposedly they are slightly hollow in the inside.
My DeviantArt, why not drop by and take a look!

I have used nail polish remover on a Funko which had some stray spots of paint.  It seemed to work okay and didn't mess with the plastic, however I would not soak your pony in acetone.  Just spot remove the paint.

You know, this is a really good idea.  I have a ton of extras too and no one seems to want them.  Maybe I should customize them.  I would just use acrylic paint.  It should stick just fine.

I customized a Fluttershy at some point.

I don't know how they would hold up in the oven, so I used apoxie sculpt, which dries slowly after the two compounds are mixed together.

Someone on the Arena customised POP Funko Twilight into Trixie, if I remember correctly. It looked really nice too :)

I've customized the ponies and the walking dead minis. You can bake them and I've used sculpey on several of them. They hold up very well. I think my temp was about 250-275 for about 10 mins of baking.

She turned out great! Did you paint the symbol on both sides?
