Cancer prevention?
« on: April 20, 2012, 11:06:59 AM »
I've been washing my year 2 rainbow ponies and unicorn and pegasi ponies this week so I can arrange them in my pony room. This is a huge undertaking as I have at least 2 if not more of each of the ponies and many of my year 2 ponies are in the worst condition of any G1s in my collection. Anyway, some of my first ponies from when I started collecting are partially filled with silica gel beads. Me and mlp4me went in on a gallon bucket of silica when we started collecting to put in our ponies when we are finished cleaning them inside and out and drying them. I've noticed that my silica filled ponies have virtually no cancer, except 1 who was in terrible condition when I got it. So I went in my pony room and looked at all of my other ponies with the silica and no cancer on any of them either. It could just be a coincidence but I think I'm going to buy another bucket of silica to fill the rest of my ponies. It couldn't hurt anyway since it controls moisture.

I did know a collector who used to pop a little silica sachet inside each of her ponies after they were cleaned and dried...then popped the head back on...she lived in a very humid climate so it was to help counter any moisture build up in the plastic [sweaty plastic...yuck]...not sure if it worked but it is a pretty neat idea!

You ll need to keep us posted to see if this is a theory that could be expanded to prevent any plastic breakdown/damage.

I'll definitely watch to see if this works! I took a pony down the other day and found a spot on her. So disappointing :(

I have checked some of my gals and the pellets are pinkish.
However I've tried to "dry out" the extra pellets and after they are removed from the stove or microwave they immediately turn back to a pinkish tone. It's such a tease! You're supposed to be able to remove the moisture....

I honestly havent spoken to her for about 18 months or so but she is a long time collector although not active on any boards...I would guess she had a reason for giving it a shot and had been collecting long enough to notice if it didnt work. In "theory" the concept should work...certainly to reduce or prevent the build up of moisture...whether it prevents a breakdown or damage in the plastic is an interesting theory from HavACrumpet that would be pretty amazing if it does!

Wow, that would be fantastic if it really worked! I sure hope so, because cancer makes me sad.
