I found a cheap way to store my UK MLP comic books, yay!
« on: April 25, 2014, 09:00:04 AM »
I wanted to share this in case anyone was in the same dilemma I was . . . "How do I store these giant comic books?"

I found these cardboard magazine holders from IKEA are great!

For being cardboard, they're very sturdy.  Also, cheap.  Yay.   :accomplished:

Ooo. I never thought of using those lol. Maybe I should invest in some to keep my other comics separate from my pony ones.
I currently keep mine in a tiny crate :)

I have used those ikea magazine boxes for years for back issues of natgeo or my husband's Nintendo Powers; the problem is that unless you keep the box absolutely full, the mags kinda settle a little bit and curl at the bottom corners. This problem exists anytime you store them upright, unless you add support (bookends for example). For the ikea boxes, you may avoid the curling problem if you stuff any voids with tissue or newspaper so the comics don't settle.

What about other comic collectors? I am just starting to accumulate the comics myself (about a dozen or so) and am pretty leery about storing them upright, but comics have been around a long time- what do the pros do? Page protectors and binders? Drawers?

Are they US comics?  I think comic book shops sell boxes specifically formatted to fit them! :)  Although the IKEA things would work for them too.

The issue with the UK comics (at least the older ones) is that they're much larger than US comics, so nothing built for US comics fits them, LOL.

Yes, that's a worry of mine, PonyQueen.     I'd love to hear from other collectors too.

I wish they were a little bit smaller, but they work ok though.

That's why I keep every issue  bagged and boarded.
Bags are really cheap on ebay, and thin cardboard can be found in any stationery shop.

Those are great! I bet your comics look smart stored in them.

I will admit to having had the same problem as ponyqueen with paperwork in file folders over the years - over time if they are not packed full to support one another they will warp, bend and curl up unfortunately.

I use polly pockets and ring binders. The UK comics fit perfectly in standard polly pockets and it means I can flick through them to my hearts content. The ring binder prevents the comics from bending out of position and for safety I store the binders on their sides.

Neat! They should display nicely in those :)

hathorcat, by polly pockets do you mean those plastic pockets that fit into folders? If so, I use them too, as they are perfect for the G1 comics :) I keep mine in Lever Arch files, typically 75 comics to a folder. I think US folders/pockets are slightly different in size though.

Yes - that's the ones I mean. I was actually trying to come up with what Americans would call them but I was drawing a blank. :P It would help if I spelt it like the stationery rather than like the toy though - poly pockets not polly pockets he he he.

Would the US not have something which would take A4 pages perhaps?

I use those cardboard holders too (got a bunch of them for free from work). One box has the main line, and the other has the mini series and friends forever. Thankfully our comic store always provides the bag and board with each comic.

That's a great idea, I will have to buy some of those. Also I have been trying to find a way to store my G1 comics and I have a zillion of those plastic pockets already and a spare folder! Thanks Cat and LadyG for the tip!

Most comic shops will sell the bags and boards, often they even have the boxes too!

The problem is G1 comics are essentially A4 in size which is bigger than your standard current comic. They were actually magazines, hence the larger size.
