Hi,
Does anyone remember this show? I have a very vague memory of getting up extra early on the weekends to watch a few episodes. I was browsing YouTube last night and ended up watching the pilot (the Starla version) Are any episodes on DVD playable in the US? I heard Netflix used to have the Starla versions of the episodes them but they're not there anymore.

I do remember this show. I got up early a few times to watch it myself. If I remember correctly, there was a line of dolls that went with the cartoon.
-
Used to watch it all the time :)
Yes on the dolls--and the horses.
-
I used to watch it here in the UK as Starla and the Jewel Riders. In fact i think it was in the last sort of decade or so i saw it on TV here. I did used to enjoy it :)
-
Jewel Riders Archive has been posting the full episodes on Youtube for both the Starla and Gwenevere versions.
I wore out my 3 VHS tapes as a kid for the show and I *might* currently have the Jewel Riders watching over me as I sleep :D
-
Thanks for the tip on the Jewel Riders Archive. I didn't realize they had both versions. :)I might see if I can find some of the old VHS on EBay. I never had any of the toys. Does anyone know how long the toys were in stores? It seemed like the show wasn't on for very long.

-
As a heads up the VHS tapes don't cover the whole series, just a few select episodes.
-
I found the intro for season one on youtube. For some reason this seems familiar to me but I don't remember if I actually watched it or not.
Anyway here's the intro....

The toys had a very short run. They were expensive (or at least the horses were) for what you got at the time, that coupled with the fact they didn't get a lot of advertising support meant a short shelf life. I had bought the winged horse (edit: Sunstar) and ended up returning her because the wing ratchets gave out after a couple of days. They weren't too well designed.
-
I used to watch Starla and the jewelriders as a kid. I still know the lyrics to the themesong. Didn't know there were two version tho, or any dolls.
-
loved this show as a kid, woke up stupid crazy early to watch it lol i have a decent collection of figures packed away somewhere
-
you can find it on youtube :)
-
Thank you everyone. I noticed on EBay there is a lunchbox and sleeping bag so there must have been enough interest to make a little merch. I don't think I ever saw a commercial for the toys. The show being in the extra early time slot (at least in my area) when most kids were still asleep probably didn't attract viewers. It looks like it could have been a great hit with more marketing.

I watched as a kid. There are toys of them. A friend of mine sold this figure for 1€. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/fc/60/bc/fc60bc7f8b025aeb0ee18b88032bb028.jpg

Oh yea, Starla used to be my jam. I was quite obsessed with Wintermane and the lioness that appeared for 5 seconds in the pilot episode, then in season 2 Shadow Song was added to that obsessionXD
Here in sweden, I never saw any of the toys...Might have seen a bedspread, but nothing else... Sweden have always been odd with toys and shows... With Digimon for example, we got the Tamers toys, but the tamer season never appeared here.
I would really want to have the horse toys at the very least, I even posted a topic about it a few days ago in the wanted section. Sooo... if anybody happen to have a Sunstar or Moondancer they want to sell, contact me.
Oh also, I have just made a custom Starla doll. I just finished rehairing her and I also did her leotard, but she is missing a pair of proper boots, armguards, cape and shoulder guards.

Wow. Your custom Starla looks great so far. I have to admit I've been looking at Princess Gwenevere/Starla toys on Ebay lately keep finding myself drawn to Sunstar.
I haven't watched more episodes yet, but plan to soon. :)

Thanks. Hopefully I can do customs of Tamera and Fallon too... there is however a slight problem with doing Fallon...her skin is so dark and the only really dark EAH doll dont have the removable legs so if I use that doll Ill need to give her real tights... or I use a Briar/Rosabella to get the molded legs but then she will be whitewashed....
Anyway, I have looked at the Sunstars on ebay too, but I hesitated to buy them because they are a bit scratched up... I cant help be a bit picky.

I bought mine MOC/MIB to open. Expensive but no regrets and well worth it. I love them and they are perfect :)

There is a "mib" moon dancer on ebay that I was thinking of doing that with...the package is almost totally ruined but the seller want 150dollar for it.. it felt very high to pay for a horse I would debox. There is another moondancer at 300 but its in good condition so it would be dumb to debox it.

Yeah I saw those when I was looking. I paid $460 my MOC/MIB set. It was an almost complete set. Just missing Sun Power Gwenevere who I'm kinda iffy on if I actually want depending on the day. So both horses and 8/9 of the dolls. Still a little pricey (still not too bad though compared to what I see pop up) but I was impatient

For a near complete set, thats a pretty good price.

The more I look at the toys, the more I want something Princess Gwenevere. I didn't know they had kid's meals toys for the show. I'm hoping to watch more episodes this weekend. :)

Ooooh yes - the Long John Silvers ones. They're pretty awesome. I keep Archie out with my display.
-
It's official. :) I want a Princess Gwenevere toy. I don't know what to pick.

I'd recommend the Long John Silvers Sunstar figure since you mentioned being drawn to her :) It's a lovely figure that shouldn't break the bank. It doesn't come up as often as the regular sized Sunstar but when it does it's normally in better condition. She's also a lot more show accurate that her larger counterpart. Although after you get that one you'll want the others
-
Funny thing is that i recently found this series called "Mia and me", and it contain an alicorn that look a lot like Sunstar.
-
Thanks Duenia :) The Long John Silver Sunstar is pretty and will make a great starter piece. .
I really like Mia and Me too. :) I never thought about how much Sunstar and Onchao look alike but I took a couple of screencaps and they do share some similarities.

Yea, to say the least! They are both white equines with a golden horn, golden mane and tail, and white wings. Both are decorated with gems too, even if in different ways.
The main difference is that Sunstar has a horses tail but Onchao has a lion tail.
-
Starla and the jewel riders! My sisters and I used to pretend we were Starla, Fallon and Tamera (I was Tamera) and we would recreate our own episodes when we were younger. :D Good memories!
-
I adored this show when I was younger! I always felt the ending/credits song was catchy, and I still find myself humming it on occasion. I remember really wanting the toys too, but I think in my area they were pretty hard to find. I think Sunstar was like $30 or $40 back then, right?
-
Yeah, around there - the action figures weren't cheap either, though not as bad as the horses. I don't recall exactly how much they cost but it was well above what similarly sized horse toys were going for. I wasn't all that keen to begin with but the posable wings swayed me (at least until they broke).
-
Wow, I didn't realize the horses cost that much when they were new. I remember getting a Barbie and her horse gift set and I think that was around $50 at the time (around 1995 or 1994) I think I like the Jewel Riders horses better without their armor.
There is a MOC Jewel Rider doll on Ebay with the original price tag on the box and it says $7.99 It's one of the basic dolls.
Ponyfan
-
I'm pretty sure give or take a dollar or two the basic dolls were $10, deluxe were $20, and horses $30.
-
Thanks Duenia. :) I think it's really interesting how much they cost new. Did the light up feature work on the dolls?
Ponyfan
-

Ponyfan
The light up feature does work! No batteries though. They should have a small circular semi-transparent piece of plastic on their heads. Light goes in there and makes the jewels shine. I don't remember if the Deluxe dolls can light up though. And with Kale you have to turn her crown to uncover the plastic piece and with the regular dolls you have to pull down their masks.
-
I always thought the dolls used batteries. So if there is no mask or crown then the dolls won't light up? I've noticed several on Ebay that don't have the masks anyone but I'm sure they were easy to lose. I also noticed they changed Princess Gwenevere's voice actress for Season 2. I've being drawn to a Princess Gwenevere doll now. :)
Ponyfan
-
Yeah, none of the toys use batteries from what I remember. The horses certainly didn't - on Sunstar light was caught by her horn and it made the jewel on her harness shine. Guessing they probably have fibre-optic filaments inside.

It will still light up. No mask or crown just means that you can't cover the hole the light enters through. So basically you can't turn it of without removing the doll for the light source you're using.

Actually it's not the horn ;) It's the bit of plastic behind the horn that does it.

The light enters through the little open/translucent circles that I've circled on the head. :)
-
Huh, wonder why they didn't use Sunstar's horn? Maybe not flat enough to catch the light? *puzzled* You're right though, I vaguely recall being somewhat dismayed there was this spot of translucent plastic behind her horn. And that the sticker wouldn't stay on the flag/comb.

I always assumed it was because one of the things they made a point of showing is that you could make the light blink like it does sometimes in the show. You can't cover the horn really but you can put your finger over the little plastic circle. They do that in the commercials for the toys.
-
Ah that makes sense - I never saw the show or commercials as a kid.
We had four english channels growing up; TV was pretty slim on kid's programming. Most of the cartoons I got to see were rented out on tape.

I had 3/4 of the VHS tapes. They naturally have the commercial for the toys on them as well lol.

Aww what a great thread, thank you! Very nostalgic for me. I used to love this show as a little kid, and would always walk around and sing the theme song. I found it much later, as an adult, on youtube so I've seen all the episodes now. Such a cute idea for a show! They should totally reboot this, they've rebooted everything else by now. :P
-
Agreed, they really should reboot it. Maybe in the style of the Princess Amethyst shorts? That would be awesome.
-
Thanks for the pictures Duenia. :) I'm really loving this thread too. I'm about 5 episodes in to the 1st season but I'm enjoying the show.
I didn't know there were Princess Amethyst shorts. When I was very young someone gave me the comic book but I think I would have enjoyed it more when I was a little older but I've been wondering lately if I should give it another chance.
I think a new Jewel Riders show could be fun if it was done right. :) Keeping the same characters and basic idea and maybe updating the animation.
Ponyfan
-
I think there's a group working on a comic book reboot of the show following a new set of characters. With the main character being a younger sister to Gwen.
-
You mean like a fan comic, or is this something official?
-
A comic book sounds interesting. :)

I decided to buy a MoonDancer that was still mib but the box was in horrible condition so I let her out. I wanted to see her face and tried to take of the mask, it was really hard to do as appearatly some bozo had put on the mask while the pain on her was still drying... I found quite a big blemish from that on her cheek...T.T
It's so typical for my bad luck T_T

Im so sorry that happened to your Moondance. :(
I bought the Hallmark MLP Moondancer ornament and the tissue paper was stuck to her and really hard to get off. I guess whoever packed the Moondancers for Hallmark didn't wait for the paint to dry before wrapping them.
Ponyfan
-
I just discovered that not only was Moondancers face scarred, her body was too.
Why on earth cant they wait for the paint to dry? they will get a lot more customer satisfaction if they do>_<
I feel so very disappointed, I overpaid quite a bit in order to get a nice MoondancerT_T
-
I am so sorry. :(
Ponyfan
-
I question if she really was MIB? Her mask shouldn't have been on her face. It should have been in a little plastic bag with the rest of her accessories. The damage there looks like what happens when they get stored in warm conditions and the paint starts to melt.
-
Well she was still packaged. It was hard to get into the box due to how demolished it was.
This was how she looked.

-
Yeah I wonder if it was just that she was stored somewhere warm and the paint got tacky. :( That is so sad! Even all banged up, that box is pretty cool. Love the box art.
-
Yea that is probably the issue...maybe they took out the mask and put it on her to have her like this and then during the years it got all banged up to be like this...
Well that just means my quest to get the horses in good condition goes on... I might custom Moondancer to become ShadowSong once I get a good Moondancer.
-
She's so pretty. Again I am so sorry that her mask and armor stuck to her. :( I've been looking at Princess Gwenevere toys lately but haven't bought one yet. I'm still in Season 1 of the episodes.

That is a really good idea honestly. I've been debating doing it myself. In the meantime though I guess even if she's not perfect you have her?
-
Yea. I have to settle for that in the meantime.
-
Looking closely at your picture, it looks to me like the 'damage' is extra silver paint from the trim on the mask has transferred to the horse's body. You might be able to carefully clean it off?
-
Its actually the reversed, paint from the head got stuck on the mask. The horses are actually transparent and then airbrush painted.
-

Oh man I would love to see that! If you do, please post pics here!

Huh, really looks like the other way around from the picture but I trust you know better than I, having the toy in person! I was led astray by the fact it looks like the silver paint overlaps the eyelashes. :c

Yea its hard to see on photos, they end up lacking a bit of depth perception. But when you got her irl you can both see and feel that the paint is dented. Sadly, there is no paint overlapping anything, the eyelashes are just messed up because the paint was messed up.
-
Unfortunate - I bet the plasticizers from the mask/saddle interacted with the paint over the years, and it ended up dissolving. Poor horsie. :(
-
I'm sure that whoever put the mask on didn't realize what would happen years later but it's still really sad. :( I had to look up ShadowSong because I haven't made it to that episode yet. I think a Princess Gwenevere toy might be coming to live with me soon.

I finished Season 1 last night and ended up watching a toy review video on the deluxe dolls afterwards. :) I haven't bought any toys or merch from the show yet though.

Valley of the Unicorns was one of my fave episodes! Right up there with Shadow Song. ^_^

Ooh I remember this. I watched it because it came before Sailor Moon on RTV, a german TV channel that we had. Mann the memories.

I loved Valley of the Unicorns too. :) It seems my favorite episodes so far feature Moondance.

Be careful with the saddle too my twin found out the hard way, the saddle on our second hand one had gotten too warm. It took some of her paint right off! :whoa:
