Could g5 be the potential downfall of mlp?

Yes, there’s many generations that people aren’t fans of (g3.5) For their dramatic and overly stylized design. (Which i always thought was cute and charming in a way being into kawaii chibi artystyles when i was little) And g4 for doing the same thing but more toned down and less anime/chibi-like. G5 in a way is somewhat reminescent of g4/g4.5 but it’s almost like it was mixed with another generic kid’s artstyle. The main reason it doesn’t work out is due to the toys almost blending in with ones that are similar. I also noticed the downgrade in quality has been significant. The only store i’ve seen still with g5 toys was a 5 below that had these mini figures. The details on them were poor enough to mistaken them as fakies. The show designs make them look a bit almost too human-like at the same time. I think if there were a good way to redesign the appearence of them is if they looked like a more modernized version of g3. But still a distinct enough style to not look exactly like g3. Another good idea would be adding less harsh colors. Unfortunately g5 seems to be almost non-existent to find in the wild for me. Only really being still somewhat existing online. G2 was heavily disliked when it was first around but got more appreacated long after. But i don’t feel like the g5 toys will get appreciated anytime soon. Especially with the significant loss of interest in them. There also should be more brushables as its always been the main gimmick of the toys. More variety would also help. When i was little I always would rather have a newer character than a slightly different version of the same. I always liked that even g4 made background characters into toys. I’m glad that there’s a lot of g1 reboots but with g5 it feels like the chances of anything new are very slim. I worry that g5 may be the end of any new releases and there may not be any chance of g6.

I don't think the generation will be,it's just bad decision after bad decision. So blame Hasbro.

If a generation killed MLP it was G4. Not G5. It was a victim of its own success and Hasbro have not rebooted the line completely because the IP of G4 is still too valuable to them. So G4 is the reason G5 is not particularly inspiring.

In 1997, when G2 came out, the reaction to it was very mixed. Some people rolled with it, some hated it. Really, really, hated it. It was so unpopular in the US that Hasbro there pulled it after a year or two. It was kept afloat in Europe, and carried on till around 2003 there, but even though it's now accepted in its own right, it's always been a more niche collection generation.

...BUt after G2, Hasbro went back to the drawing board and came up with G3.

A failed generation isn't going to kill the MLP brand, it just takes a regeneration that is imaginative, different and exciting enough to capture the imagination and the market. What that answer is now is difficult to work out. But I don't see G5 as any kind of existential pony threat. I said before G4 ended that it would be a hard act to follow and it has been.

If MLP doesn't continue beyond G5, it will still have been killed by G4 - and the inability of Hasbro to let it go and move on.

G1 and G3, while nostalgia definitely plays a part for me, are attractive because of their variety of characters (not counting Core 7). According to the MLP Merch count of G4 "brushables," 679 of the 1034 releases are Mane 6 or supporting secondary characters. For G5, it's 99 of the 121 releases. I don't want to keep buying the same character over and over. (That's what Barbie is for.) Quality is also far less than G1 and G3, though both are not without their flaws.

Like Taffeta said, Hasbro has to be willing to let go of its G4 cash cow and fully embrace a new generation and fresh design that is not at all attached to Friendship Is Magic for the brand to have a chance at continued success. Right now, it feels like they're just dipping their toes in with G5 and keeping G4 alive as a fallback. I always felt that they let G4 fans - we all know which ones - have too much influence on the show's and toys' directions.

I only saw the first G5 movie once, so I might be wrong, but if irc, G5 is set in a distant future from G4.  At the beginning of the movie, Sunny and her friends are playing with Mane 6 G4 toys and one of them says something about the different ponies all living separately from each other instead of together like they did in the Mane 6's time.  Also I never quite figured out how the new elements in Sunny's time, fit in with the G4-G5 timeline.
