Has anyone worked with DAS clay?
« on: June 10, 2023, 02:43:48 PM »
I've been watching a lot of base building videos for mini figures, like Warhammer. Most of the builders use DAS air dry clay. I bought some and am going to use it on a pony for a contest, just to see how it holds up. Apparently, it's the "professional" air dry clay and it's supposed to be pretty sturdy. It holds texture incredibly well and it easy enough to work with. You can smooth it with water like regular clay.

I will post my experience with it once finished.

I've used it quite a few times! It takes a while to cure and dry but otherwise it doesn't crack much and yes water smoothing works best! :) I look forward to seeing what you're going to make!

Yes. It can grow mold, even with paint and sealer applied over the top of it. :(

Edit: Assuming you're talking about DAS paper clay? That's what I used for a couple of pony customs.
My creativity keeps running into a lack of time and resources.
I'm also available via twitter at @Kazzellin :)

So many projects!! What do I want to work on? :awake:

It doesn't say paper, just Air Dry Modelling Clay. It's in a red package.

I haven't used it yet, things didn't go as planned and I ended up not joining the contest. I'll use it on a personal or just a test pony sometime in the future.

I've used DAS in the past before I tried out polymer clays. Not on ponies but to make sculptures and to customise a toy horse made out of hard plastic. My sculpting skills are way better now so I guess I should give it a try again. But I believe these types of clays are not the best for highly detailed work, they're pretty difficult to blend smoothly and I'm not sure if they will even stick to vinyl? Anyway, I'm eager to hear the results of your experiments, BC!

In the meanwhile, I found this helpful Youtube video comparing five types of air dry clays- I'm actually surprised by the results of some of those tests! DAS seems to hold up pretty well.
