Title: Sundance shirt found at Forever21
Post by: MonstarNomNom on June 03, 2012, 07:11:41 PM
I wasn't sure if someone posted about this yet, but my SO found a fringed Sundance shirt at Forever21 today! It was exciting, although I didn't get it :( It was fringed a bit too high, so there were no hopes of it looking good on me.

It's grey and it says "California" underneath her which is really random :/ It was the same graphic that's been used on other shirts and other merch recently. I would post a picture but it's on the SO's phone  >_<  And it was listed at $15.80. Maybe I'll get it if it goes on sale. ;P

Never mind, here's a link to it on the website. I hope this link is allowed x3

^This.

You can't even save it and turn it into a cute tank top or something like that, unless you buy it several sizes too big so you can chop the fringe and bring the top of the shirt inward. Sheesh. Some people will probably love it, but I think it just looks tacky the way they designed it.

Maybe if you chop the fringes off, hem it, and wear another shirt under it it could be salvageable?

Maybe, but it's so wide (or maybe it just looks really wide?).

Also seems like it would look weird to have a half-shirt over another shirt. If I saw it on a stranger I would probably think, "Where did the rest of that shirt go?"

Belly shirts are the big it thing lately  Which is unfortunate for well..most of us.

It is really, really wide :( It's like a big box. It looked horrible on me when I tried it on. Lol Although I'm sure there are people out there who can pull it off and make it look awesome! I'm a fringe lover myself, but not when it goes that high, unfortunately.

I just. . .what?

Why does it say California on it? Why not "My Little Pony" or "Sundance" or anything even remotely relevant?
Also shirts like that are super hideous imo. If I wanted a cut up shirt, I'd cut up a shirt. XP

I was super excited, as Sundance is my favorite pony, but I can do nothing but facepalm at that shirt.

I love that shirt except for the fringe! Ugh, in WHAT group of people is that style popular? I thought it died a few decades ago? And the California part IS totally random...but I live in California so yay? That image is so darn cute though, and I do love gray shirts...(Black is a no-go with 16 cats, and white is usually see-through. Gray is nice :) ) I think I might need it...maybe I can cut off the fringe and use it as a sleep shirt?

I was SO excited when I spotted that shirt a few months ago and I rushed over to it...only to see that horrible, hideous fringe cut. :( I'm sorry, but I find that style unbelievably ugly, so despite how adorable she is, I had to pass it up. Why can't Forever 21 (or Hot Topic, or whatever), put old school ponies on more items? Or even Gen 4, that's cool too, but on shirts designed for those of us who DON'T wear boring mens t-shirts?

I'm sorry to those who like this, but it is so upsetting to me:(, Not any offense Monstar cause you are awesome :D.  It's not necessarily the fringes, but the "California", like it's some cool Hollywood thing, that, and the croppedness.  I don't like the whole trying to be cool thing that is going on.  Part of me really wants to like it, but I just don't.
Title: Re: Sundance shirt found at Forever21
Post by: knitgirl on June 03, 2012, 08:26:08 PM
I don't mind that it says California. I've never been, but I'd wear shirts that said Hawaii or Florida because I just like the ocean and beaches.  I would take a pony shirt that said California any day over those awful daddy issue shirts Hasbro has been putting out lately... :-/

Post by: hyenacub on June 03, 2012, 08:36:21 PM
I think the fringe is awesome, but the CA...NOT.  It MIGHT be the brand of the graphic of the graphic company.  It says:

"A heathered knit top featuring a "California" My Little Pony graphic. "

Or it might be some sort of thing where there are several shirts with "California" on it, with different themes and graphics?  Those are the only two ideas I have LOL

Well, seeing as it's being sold at forever21, it's obviously aimed at teenagers and young adults. This fit and the fringes are very popular with my age group! I love this shirt, IMO the fringe is hip and makes the pony less babyish, and the cut is cute. Have no idea about the california though, lol.

Sorry if you guys don't like it, but maybe you should see it from the perspective of who it's aimed for. :)

Hey, it's cool, not everyone has to like it  C:  I'd totally wear it if I were a girl.  XD  AND if it didin't say California.

It's just another 80s revival.  Half shirts for girls and guys were big in the early and mid-80s.

Hey, what's with all the internalized body shaming going on here? :(

Just because you've had a baby or don't look like the model doesn't mean that something doesn't look "good" on you. Be proud of your body the way it is! I'm really tall and thin and have been told multiple times that I should model, and people still make fun of my body or say that I'm ugly. And the only thing that matters is what you think about your body.

Personally, I don't like the fringe or the "California," but one of my friends takes clothes and makes patches out of them, then sews them onto other things, so she could "transfer" Sundance for me onto something else.

Um, cuz California is the best state, DUH! :P

LOL! *points to location* Hee hee, I'm so cheeky! But yeah, not sure why ponies would be Californian more so than, say, Rhode Islanders... since that's where the Hasbro headquarters are... Oh well! I doubt this would fit me, fringe or no, so I'll have to reserve judgement til I see it in person!

I'm a 24 year old woman and I think the style is terrible :P I may be just a step past 21 but I think I'm still in the 'who it's aimed for' group. Good to know there are apparently people out there who appreciate the style though, lol.

Uh, coming from someone who has baby weight to complain about. . .baby weight is fat. And you can gain a lot of it, and it can be really really hard to loose. I have a literal 'flap' of skin/fat because of my pregnany, and so I would look HORRENDOUS in any sort of short shirt. Anyone that isn't basically skin and bones will NOT look good in crop tops or shirts like that (but if they want to wear them idc, their choice). Its not "body shaming". Not everyone will look good in everything, because there are so many different body types & sizes and so many skin tones, hair colors, bone structures, etc. That's just how it is.

If you're (general you) not the right body type to "match" a certain style but want to wear it anyways, good for you, but not everyone feels that way. Some people prefer to wear the styles that are made for their body type, because it looks better.

As for the "its for teens" deal, I'm 19. Still hate this shirt and that whole style.

....I don't think I understand the thought process.  I get pre-distressed jeans since otherwise distressing takes either time or effort, but... that's just a T-shirt that's had a scissors taken to it.  Anyone can do that.  Wouldn't it be more accessible to sell it as a T-shirt and expect people who want a chopped up T-shirt to chop it up? :x and then people who like ponies and Cali but not weird fringes could get it too!  You can cut up a shirt, but you can't un-cut up a shirt...

I guess I just don't get modern trends *sigh*

That's coming from a sixteen year old who never wears skirts that are more than 5cm above the knee and tapes down any shirt that could possibly be looked down though.  Pretty sure my opinion is invalid on matters like this XD

Blech. No offense to anyone who likes the shirt/style (we all have different tastes!), but personally I think this is horrible. 'California' is so random on an MLP shirt  (released nationally, at least [maybe internationally?]) that they could almost put any other word there and it would make just as much sense. 'Toaster' 'Notepad' 'Garage'. Or any other random place...'Pakistan' 'West Oak Street' etc.

On a side note, are 'belly shirts' really coming back into 'style'? Save me Jebus...

Thanks for posting about it though! It would have been funny if it didn't just make me want to facepalm :P

Saying that someone won't look good in X style because they have Y figure is body shaming. It's letting society tell you what is and isn't beautiful. Society doesn't think muumuus are beautiful, and if someone has the type that only looks good in muumuus, then society says they're not beautiful. That's body shaming.

It doesn't matter if you have "baby weight" or not. It doesn't change who you are on the inside. People who judge you because you don't have a super model belly aren't people you want to associate with.

This has been out for a while now. Was gonna get it, cause I do like the half shirt style, but the fringes not so much. I looked at the fringes, and it looks like they could tear the shirt with just a tug. It is cute. I just don't want a shirt that'll rip after a couple of wears.

I did see it on "sale" rack for $14.50 at the Forever 21 near me, but that's not much of a sale, lol.

The one time I've wandered into Forever 21, the stuff on their sale rack was so they were a few bucks a piece.

~$15 is what I'd expect to pay for a graphic tee anywhere that isn't, say, Hollister, and this shirt should have more "value" since it took extra time/effort to give it that ripped/cut look, so ti's good enough of a value.

I wonder how strong the material actually is, though. If it's thinner, it works good for me as a patch, but it would make more sense for it to be thicker if it's going to be worn as a top by itself.

Hey guys!! The 80s are totally back - personally I find it completely appropriate that an 80s toy is on belly cropped t-shirt with the super trendy and hot location of "California" on it...I am having flash backs to some seriously dodgy early 80s tv shows and movies situated on the beaches of the Golden State! This t-shirt would fit right in!

Is it my taste? Um....no! Will I buy it? Heck...no! But due to where its being sold I get it - its "trendy" enough to fit right in. Not every teenager is going to love it but its probably right for most of Forever21s market.

Edit: I am not visualising this shirt on someone with crimped hair, neon green leggings, orange slouch socks and sneakers/trainers - stylish!!!

I'm not sure what to think of it. XD I think it's like someone went 'we need to make a cool shirt, hey the 80's are in right?'
Not something I'd wear personally (nor probably fit into) as the fringing would bug the heck out of me XD

Lol! As a born and raised Californian who has lived in many other states, I will never understand why people think the whole state of California is "glamorous". It's on about oh, I don't know, a billion different shirts sold nationwide? And people actually buy it? I don't get it! It's like being a New Yorker and seeing people in other states wearing shirts with the "I<3 NY" on it haha. You just want to yell "Stop glorifying my state!!!! There's nothing exciting in 98% of it!!!!" I love California but still. It's just like any other state! There's a bunch of sand, some dirty sidewalks, big buildings, bad neighborhoods, some mountains, some trees, and a lot of deer. Woo-hoo. Definitely no ponies, except of the real life kind.

Anyways I would get this shirt and just cut off the California thing and the fringe and wear some bright tank top under it or something. But for that price, it's not worth it to me. Maybe I'll find them discounted in Cali because no locals want to walk around looking like a tourist :p

Okay, I grew up in the 80s, but even then the fringe shirts looked sloppy. The California thing is a bit random, but if it were a regular shirt I'd buy it.

The problem with those fringe things (aside from how they hang on your body)  is they fray and get distorted quickly - not to mention I'd feel like an idiot trying to pull that look off now as a 30+ year old mom.

The problem with "I <3" t shirts is if you wear them in the state/city they are from people think you are a tourist and if you wear them in a different state/country people think you are from the city/country being "loved"! Cant win...lol

But I guess "California" makes a bit more sense than "Kentucky" or "Wisconsin"... in the sense that Cali is already so glorified to high heaven that glorifying it isn't particularly surprising.

I'm still waiting for that ~hip and trendy~ shirt that says "Kentucky" on it, though

I love that it's a pony shirt (and G1!) but the fringe kills it for me.  I would totally buy it if the fringe OR the "California" weren't there.  But both of them together feel a bit forced.

I think it's been mentioned so far in this thread, but I think a super tight tank top under it might make some feel a bit more at ease wearing this shirt...  If it was simply a shorter shirt without the fringe, that's probably what I'd do (unless it was just a "short" shirt but still covered most of me - then maybe without the tank top, lol)...  The fringe, though, is a bit too out of my comfort zone.  Very un-STLGusty.   It's a shame, because it's a cute depiction of Sundance!

I repeat my idea:

"A heathered knit top featuring a "California" My Little Pony graphic. "

Or it might be some sort of thing where there are several shirts with "California" on it, with different themes and graphics?  Those are the only two ideas I have LOL

XD  I also repeat that I think it looks good...but agree that if they're not fray-treated those fringes will fray badly.  : P

Stupid fringe ruined the shirt.

I agree that the random "California" is kinda dumb. Luckily I live in California
I'm not fond of the fringe and I dislike showing my midriff but that's not going to stop me checking this out and possible purchasing it. I'll gladly perform some surgery and make it into something more wearable. I bought the color changing Firefly shirt from Walmart in XL and am transforming it into a tank top.

Haha, wow, I had no idea there was so much hate for the word California! Maybe it's just my bias because I'm from there, but it really doesn't bother in the slightest. Do I see the connection between Sundance and California? Well, she is named SUNdance, that sort of makes sense I guess. I suppose I'm so used to seeing shirts with random states name on them (usually Florida or New York, but sometimes others too, I think Virginia and New Jersey I've seen a bit) that I didn't really think twice about it. Honestly, it's just that hideous fringe (and at 23 I don't think I'm THAT much out of the targeted age, now am I?)

Heh, I don't think it's that anyone hates the word California. It's just that it's so random and weird to put a state's name on a pony shirt. It really doesn't make any sense. I would hate the shirt just as much if it were any other state. =P

Wow, I agree with those of you who said this looks like they were going for some 80s/90s style fashion. It's all so...random. Pony, fringe, belly shirt, "California", what? I can't decide if I love it or hate it! I am amused though! I do wish they'd stop making shirts only for teens and make some for adult women too...we're the ones who most likely remember G1, so I wonder how many teen girls right now would want to wear that. Obviously there are some, based on the comments here, but still, it seems odd.

And actually, I saw a girl a few days ago who was wearing a Sundance shirt, so at first that was the one I was expecting to see here.

Yup, most of us originals can't pull off something like that anymore either, with our wrinkles and sagging stuff. :"(

Well MLP IS pretty iconic, even hip teenagers/young adults with no actual interest in ponies know it's a big thing from the 80's, and seeing as the 80's are ~in~ right now G1 related things are, by association, also in.

Soooo since I love you guys so much, I went to forever 21 bright and early today and got the shirt!

I'm a larger girl at 170lbs and will NOT  be wearing it without a under shirt in public.

The fringe is absolutely ridiculous, the shirt as a whole has potential though... :)

I, for one, LOVE the fringe on it!  It would be perfect to wear over a tank top!  As for the "California", thing....I don't like that.  I feel they should have written "Ponyland" on it or something.  The "California" part kind of ruins it for me.  But man, the fringe is awesome!

I'm cool with the fringe, even though that's not my thing (AT ALL). I do like wearing larger things, as skin tight makes me uncomfortable... california type is kinda bummer.... but its a pony shirt ;3 SO YEAH!

NOOOO! I am in love with the shirt, but the only place people buy clothes at my school is Forever 21, so random girls will but this, and say "Oooh ponies are so cute i will get this even though I don't know anything about them yaaay!"

But I for one LOVE THIS SHIRT! Buying it! <3 <3 <3

I'm in two minds about the shirt, on one hand I'm like 'UGH! A crop top fringing? WHYYYY?' but on the other hand, well, 'ZOMG PONIES!' Haha!

We have a Forever 21 here in Birmingham, I'll go check it out tomorrow although I won't hold out much hope...

Maybe it should say ~UTAH~ for the Sundance Film Festival. In fact that would make this shirt ten times more hilarious. Sundance, with UTAH in gigantic letters under it...lmao.  :lmao: I'd buy that. ...without the fringe.

LOL - that *does* make sense. Slap some sunglasses on Sundance and she's ready for the Sundamce Film Festival. Yup, Utah makes more sense *g*

Whoa, you look awesome in it!

I wonder how it would fit me though- I have a really long torso and I'm really tall. I have no idea where a Forever 21 is, but I might go check it out I guess. I'm sort of a sucker for ANY pony ts.

Wow, you look amazing girl!! I've a little less in weight than you are but I've had a kid. My baby pouch is quite unflattering. Still, I may be coming around on this shirt! It really looks adorable on you! I would never pick it up off the rack but seeing it on...well, it's really cute!

I agree! I too have extra pooch (from sweets, not baby xD) but with a tank underneath this shirt it actually looks quite good. I picked one up yesterday and I think I may do some surgery on it tonight and cut the fringe off.

Wow, kinda despicable that Forever 21 can sell this shirt as their own simply by slapping "California" on it.  For those that don't know this shirt has been around for, what two years now? With just Sundance, no text and the same fringe/style.  Anyway, you can find it on taobao for 3 USD (ofc shipping sucks) without the "California" text. I know they sell it elsewhere also without but for much more, Zazzle had it for 18 I think last year.

It will just be bought in by Forever21 buyers they wont care that it will have been available else where unless they were looking for an exclusive item - maybe adding the California to it is enough of a differential for them between its previous releases.

I have seen similar style t shirts with Sundance but I hadnt spotted one with the fringe before...interesting that it was available in such a similar incarnation before this one.
