Off Topic / Nerds! (Language question in disguise)
« on: October 08, 2020, 10:25:36 AM »
So, at work today we had to put German stickers on American boxes of rainbow Nerds, these:

However, I noticed that the expiry date said "Best by May 22", and I was wondering if that's common? I'm used to seeing "Best before", not "by". Doesn't "Best by" kind of mean that you should wait until May 22, because by then they will be at their best? :P I'm not trying to be a smartass; I am genuinely curious because I have never seen it phrased like that before.

Now, because I don't really want to dedicate a whole thread to a simple language question... Lets talk about Nerds! :rainbow: :joy: Do you like them?

I've never had them, I don't think we have them here (the ones going through my hands today were going to Germany, unfortunately). However, we have (or had?) Dummies, I think they are pretty much the same? I always liked those. I would love to try Nerds too. ^.^ And I fell in love with those little creatures on the box, haha! They are adorable. :D

Off Topic / When Music Really Sinks In
« on: June 03, 2020, 07:50:01 AM »
We all have our favourite music, it can be anything! But sometimes you are listening to a song, and it aligns with everything around you, and it's like *BAM*, you fully understand the essence of it. When was this the case for you, and with what music? :hope:

I had an experience like this a couple of weeks ago, that's how I came up with the idea for this thread (a little late, but hey). One of my favourite artists in the whole wide world is Christy Moore, and when I had a long bus ride ahead, I packed my mp3-player with his songs. I don't know if any of you are familiar with his work, but if you are, you know that many of his songs are about The Great Famine and all the misery it caused. Many Irish people left for America, and got treated like crap.

So anyway, back to this alignment I experienced... I was on the bus (an overly familiar route for me), and we passed through the industrial area around five o'clock. We have a lot of Polish immigrants here in my region, and pretty much all of them work in the factories, doing soulless, heavy work. So the bus got more and more crowded as we went along, and soon the bus was for about 90% filled with Polish people. I saw them staring out the window, dog-tired. And these songs I was listening to told me their story; being lost in a strange country/culture in hope of finding a better life, getting treated like crap, away from everything you know and feel attached to... I was captured by a sudden fit of affection for these people, I must admit that I had to swallow a few tears at that point.

Please tell me your music stories too!

Pony Corral / Tell me about your dreamponies!
« on: May 11, 2020, 12:21:37 PM »
So we all have them. Those awful, awful pony dreams where you see heaps and heaps of ponies, but before you're done grabbing them all, you wake up. XD

But sometimes completely unknown ponies pop up too! What ponies from a different universe have you seen in your dreams? Tell me about them! And have there been ponies that were worth drawing after you woke up? Show me! :D

Last week I had one of those dreaded dreams. We were looking for a new house (I was so glad when I woke up, because I love our own flat too much :P ), and inside the house we got to view there was a whole army of ponies, standing on a nightstand. And since nobody else was interested in them, they were mine to take home! Among them, there was a baby pony in Baby Surprise's pose. Her body colour was that typical, grainy glow-in-the-dark plastic like those baby fakies, and she had (very dry) curly blonde hair. Her symbol was like G3 Sunset Sweety's. She was adorable! I really really wish she was real. :(

So I had to draw her! Well, sort of. I had the template (my own work) available in my computer, which is why she has straight hair instead of curly, too. And her symbol is a very poor MS Paint job (and her "grainy-ness" is a very poor MS Paint spraypaint tool). But hey, at least I can show you what she looked like! :P

Pony Corral / Show me your Secret Surprise comparisons!
« on: April 13, 2020, 10:55:04 AM »
So, now that we had all of the Secret Surprise Ponies as POTD, I remembered something. I just loved how HUGE these ponies were, so I went looking for comparison pictures on the internet as I don't have any of these ponies myself right now. However, I couldn't find any good ones... At all.

So if you have time, please show me your Secret Surprise ponies next to some regular ponies! :D

« on: April 04, 2020, 11:59:02 AM »
Hi!

I was wondering if the RAOPK project is still a thing here? If so, who can I PM for help and details?

Thank you so much! :D

Pony Brag Arena / Three Highnesses (including a grail)!
« on: April 03, 2020, 03:16:44 PM »
(Warning: a whole lot of burbling ahead. Feel free to skip right to the pictures. :P )

I haven't bought a pony online in four years... And now it was time again! :D There's obviously no Kingsday fleamarket this year, and that's usually the pony highlight of the year for me. So I decided to make my own Kingsday. :P Also, this strange, quiet (and pleasant, for me personally  :ninja: ) time reminds me of '08 and '09, when I was sick very often and cheered myself up with adding ponies to my collection. And I could use a trip to the past right now!

So I bought these lovely ponies from Nella. ^.^ Pristina has been a grail of mine for as long as I can remember... It all started when I was about 8 and we (my mother and I) discovered a little second hand toy store in my area. They had so many ponies, but they were also quite pricey. They were 7,50 each (in guilders, for those who remember the value of those), and that was a lot of money for us at the time. So everytime we went there I could pick two ponies, but they were on a really high shelf, so I couldn't see very well which ponies were there. The shelf was also right across the cash register, and the lady behind the counter made me very nervous, so I had to pick my ponies quickly. I was eyeballing an aqua pony with chartreuse hair... But everything went so fast, and I picked a different pony. When we came back another time the aqua/chartreuse pony was gone... I didn't know who she was, but when I discovered Dream Valley and the Arena in 2007, the mystery was solved. Her name was Princess Pristina, and she became a grail of mine. And now she is standing right here in front of me. :D

Majesty was a childhood pony, she was a pony I did get from that second hand store. :P I was so excited back then because I loved Majesty so much in the comics, and I didnt know they actually made her! Good times. And now I have her again, don't you just love her friendly face? :D

And Starburst/Amber got to live here just because she's pretty and because I'm a sucker for Princess ponies. :P

Here they are!

Off Topic / Tell me about your favourite music!
« on: December 18, 2019, 07:23:51 AM »
I think it's time for one of these again!

I have no idea what everyone here likes to listen too, and I'm curious. Do you have a specific genre you enjoy? Music from a specific country? You may also list your favourite bands and artists, or maybe you only listen to one band or artist? Tell me!

I'll start! I suppose it's obvious that The Cranberries are my absolute favourite band. I've been a huge fan since 1994 (I was only 7 then, but Zombie hit me like a brick), they would be the band I know everything about.

Some of my other favourite bands and artists:

Spoiler
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Christy Moore
Luka Bloom
Amorphis
Loreena McKennitt
John Frusciante
(Old) Within Temptation
Midnattsol (except the last album)
Moody Blues (especially In Search Of The Lost Chord)
Melanie C (though it's very hit or miss what I like and what I don't)
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Songs written by Huub Oosterhuis, performed by my favourite choir

...And probably a couple more that I forgot to mention.

As far as genres go, I would say that I mostly enjoy (alternative) rock, 90's music, metal, traditional Irish music and guitar based singer/songwriters (like Ralph McTell and Harvey Andrews).

I should probably also mention that I am super random when it comes to my favourite music. My music folder is also filled with "loose" songs, meaning that I only know or love one or a few songs from certain artists. Just a few of my favourite "loose" songs:

Spoiler
4 Non Blondes - What's Up
Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Jeff Wayne & Justin Hayward - Forever Autumn
Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger
Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
The Buoys - Give Up Your Guns
Crowded House - Into Temptation
Marmalade - Reflections Of My Life
Kansas - Dust In The Wind
Tremeloes - Silence Is Golden
Novastar - Closer To You
Alanis Morissette - Uninvited
Ozzy Osbourne - Dreamer
Vitamin C - Graduation Song (Yes, really! This one is a guilty please. :P )
Libido - Tres
Don McLean - Vincent
Harvey Andrews - Soldier
Jim Croce - Time In A Bottle
Apocalyptica - Hope
Sam Cooke - Wonderful World
David Bowie - Space Oddity
Vandenberg - Burning Heart
Kayak - Ruthless Queen
R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
Meredith Brooks - B**** (Not sure if the title is allowed :P )

...And the list goes on and on!

So enough about me, what about you? :water:

Off Topic / John Frusciante rejoins RHCP!
« on: December 16, 2019, 02:06:38 PM »
I thought I'd drop this here, I'm not sure if there are other fans here on the Arena?  :chili: (<--- It should be red, but this one says "Dancing Chili! :P ) They are one of my top favourites, I've been a Peppers fan since 1998.

I think it's fantastic news, obviously. But I'm also a little sad that Josh is gone now. I know a lot of fans dislike him (mostly for not being John, it's a nuisance, really), but I really love his style, he seems like a very nice and humble guy, and he has a great voice too. I would have loved to hear more from him with the Peppers.

What do you think?

Pony Corral / Dutch collectors: Something nice at the Wibra!
« on: December 11, 2019, 05:15:34 AM »
Since this is not actual MLP-stuff, please feel free to move this elsewhere! I just thought it would fit here. :)

Anyway, I was at the Wibra today, and I found something cool! They have tiny little christmas unicorns that remind me very much of the G1 porcelain figurines. :D Normally unicorn stuff just annoys me because it's been everywhere for the past two years (and I dislike christmas hats, lol), but I couldn't leave these behind. Their posture and face look so much like the porcelains; grails that I will probably never own.

They also have pink and white ones, and there's also a sitting pose. I only bought these two blue ones because the sitting ones had slightly different faces, and the only pink one they had was in rough shape. I didn't see a white standing one, they didn't have much left. They are very small, and I think they're made of polystone. So I'd say have a look if you're near a Wibra, they are only €1,29 each! :D

Off Topic / Did You Appreciate Your Toys?
« on: July 28, 2019, 01:04:05 PM »
This probably seems like a stupid thing to ask on a toy forum, but I am genuinely curious, because... I didn't. :lookround:

The thing is, we would really love to start a family, and we both love toys very much. Ponies, obviously, but also Sylvanians and other sweet things. I would be delighted if our children would play with all the Sylvanian stuff we have, but if they are anything like me, they will not appreciate it and possibly ruin it, too. I didn't ruin my toys on purpose, but I wanted to make them "better". I was flighty and had all these horrible, "uncute" interests. To illustrate my concern: Most of my barbies ended up as Chuckie or other monstrous things, for example. :ninja: I was a weird child, seriously. Nothing like the Broken Irishwoman I am today. :P Sometimes I find it hard to believe that I was the way I was...

So what about you? Did you actually play with your toys the way they were meant to be played with? I'd like to think that there are also normal kids in the world, who actually like cute families and want to imagine a peaceful, loving family life when they play with them. :P

Off Topic / Your Favourite Song Quotes!
« on: July 28, 2019, 12:12:30 PM »
I would love to read all your favourite quotes from songs! :D

_______________________________________

I have many, but the first one that comes to mind is one from a song by Christy Moore, called Natives (he didn't write it, but I love Christy Moore, so I say he did!). It's one of those lines that hit the nail on the head, gives you goosebumps and teaches you something. It's this line:

"Only the very safe can talk about wrong and right,
Of those who are forced to choose, some will choose to fight"

This is something I didn't really realise before, at least not actively. But it says everything; it's so easy to have an opinion about everything, but what if you were in someone's shoes who is in no position to think about "wrong" and "right"? It really puts you in your place...

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Show me your Sylvanians!
« on: March 01, 2019, 03:15:13 PM »
I think I may have mentioned that they are my new obsession. :P So I would like to see yours! Your collection, your picture set-ups, or show me your latest addition! Anything!

These are mine! Please excuse the lack of clever backgrounds and stuff, I took all these hasty pictures in my enthusiasm. I'm having way too much fun setting them up in different settings! :frolic: The hedgehog family is one of my latest additions, so sadly they are missing in most pictures; I took them before I had the hedgehogs. Which is a shame because they secretly are my favourites at the moment (together with the supermarket owners). And yes, the ravioli doubles as biscuits for now. My collection is still small. :P

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / I Caved In...
« on: February 17, 2019, 10:37:09 AM »
And now there's no way back! :yikes:

So a while ago I posted that I really liked Sylvanian Families, but that they are too expensive for me to collect. Yet somehow (despite costing €25  ) these made it into my house... :lookround:

AND NOW I NEED THEM ALL.  :freak: :whoa: What is it with these? Why are they so incredibly adorable? I also bought a chocolat rabbit baby with the cutest little bed, and I've been drooling over the Sylvanian section at the toystore all afternoon... Anybody else with this problem? :P
