Title: Retro/Mishmash and Reveal the Magic/Pony Life
Post by: Leave a Whisper on May 12, 2020, 06:12:39 AM
This is just for speculation and fun. Do you think these are just alternate styles in the G4 line? Do you suspect that one of them may go onto be G5? Or do you think something else will be G5 and these are a half-gen?

RtM/PL I think is probably a half gen (or maybe G5... who knows what Hasbro are doing. I almost suspect that they don't know what they're doing...), the mishmashes I think are just a side line (like Ponyvilles and EQGs are companion lines to their respective gens).

I have been wondering what gen the mishmashes "count" as, though. (Including the rainbow M6 set) For spreadsheet organization purposes, ya know? ;) I've got all the other retro ponies (Basic Fun, Dollymixes, etc) down as "G1 Retro", but these aren't exactly G1.. but they're not G4 either... so idk WHAT to call them!!

Honestly, I don't understand the question.  Can someone explain? Thank you.

I have the same problem concerning the mishmashes. I don't know where to place them. I mean MishmashTwilight and Applejack I consider G1.  Pinkie could easily be Mishmash G3. But the crossover ponies? Maybe...they're just their own thing?

Pony Life is a half gen. The retros being released now should be considered just part of the generation but a sort of alternate line.
G5 is planned to kick off with the movie being released next year.
Honestly, I don't understand the question.  Can someone explain? Thank you.
We're just trying to classify some of the different toy styles along the G1-4 line...this question in particular concerning the Pony Life figures and the g1-ish styled brushables being released starting with last year's SDCC exclusive.

Yeah I would say these cross over ponies are just their own thing. They don't have anything to do with g4 or g5. They are just collectables aimed at older collectors trying to branch out into other fandoms to get more profits than they do off of pony collectors.

G4 and g5 lines are aimed at kids as usual, this is just something like the Kotobukiya bishojo statues or loyal subjects. I don't see them as part of g4 or g1 they aren't part of the toy line just using the characters for a adult aimed collectable

I do think they need their own identifier outside of gen numbers.  How about “Nostalgia Cash Grab”?  :devious:

I think that fits the basic fun ponies better.

the SDCC mishmash Twilight, I would definitely classify as G1 Retro... because she's a G1 character, in the context of being a G1 character (I worded that weirdly, but I mean - like, Moondancer is a G1, but G4 used her too. But they're different characters. Mishmash Twilight is meant to be remake of the G1 toy), and she's new. So to me, that qualifies her as "G1 retro".

the rainbow M6 set I guess I'd consider G4, since it's G4 characters.

But the crossovers, I'm really stumped. Especially since they've been released at this point, where we're not sure what's going on with the main line (is PL a temporary redesign, or G5?)... It really does feel like they need their own term. I disagree with the idea that "they're a side-line" cause like - the Guardians of Harmony statues were more aimed at adults than kids, the Bishoujo figures aren't really meant for kids, etc - but they're still clearly G4. These are a weird grey area.

I do think they need their own identifier outside of gen numbers.  How about “Nostalgia Cash Grab”?  :devious:

I like this :P

What if we call these crossovers ‘gen X’
Reason being- “generation X” is perceived as being directionless and disaffected, and “X-over” is another way to spell crossover. Just a thought....

It's kind of been... weird with naming after Gen 4 launch really...
FiM has had changes within the generation that makes it hard to number them, the first update to them was only a slight sculpt change to the heads but after that you had the Movie versions which some were initially debating if that was G4.5 but now we have these pony life ones who look different too and they are g4.5... all the while these new "retro style" kind of fit more with what would be G3 in terms of looks... and I'm using the term retro loosely here because technically G3 isn't 20 years old yet (did look up how old something had to be to be considered retro and google gave me 20 years... likewise apparently anything that is 20+ years can be considered vintage lol so we got some oddball things going here)...

Basically it's getting harder to figure out what is what in terms of generation naming XD

Nothing that comprises the mane 6 from G4 in any format can or will ever be G5 to me.

Collectors designated those terms and one of the main criteria is a pretty major reboot. Recycling the whole cast is not a reboot, ergo PonyLife is at best 4.5.

It feels like we are asking ourselves this question every time Hasbro releases a slightly new thing. Neither of these options are G5 to me because G5 hasn't been revealed yet.
PL is an inbetweener like G3.5, Hasbro very much stated this in the official announcement (Pony Life will sweeten the waiting time for the new movie, yadda yadda).

Very true.

Doesn't mean Hasbro won't stay lazy and just continue on with PL.  :yucky:

I will mention, and this sounds like hearsay to me, but a someone posted on the official MLP page saying that Tara Strong said Twilight Sparkle was not going to be part of G5... Again that sounds like hearsay to me but...

I hope that's true. Now if only they'd get rid of the rest.

I prayyy that Twilight Sparkle won't be in G5. I'd be fine if they went back to other Twilights, but Ms. Sparkle was the center point of 9 seasons, we can all use a break from her.
And Tara Strong's voice in general. She is so many shows' protagonist, it doesn't hurt her to lose MLP.

I'd celebrate if the new show's ponies looked like that boxart and all had brand new voice actresses. I am really fond of Tabitha St. Germain but at the same time I wouldn't cry if all voices got replaced together with the characters.
