Customs / Re: Do buyers prefer alt rehairs or full customs?
« on: October 06, 2023, 12:27:46 PM »
I've had no trouble selling both alt rehairs and full customs - the full customs will generally fetch a higher price, which works for me, the full customs are more work.

I got G1 Angel as a deflock project but ended up loving her deflocked and kept her.  I thought I was done collecting G1s but there's always room for more.

Pony Corral / Re: Anyone else actually loves the og 80s MLP the movie?
« on: April 16, 2023, 12:16:13 PM »
I absolutely adored it as a child and rented it from blockbuster as much as possible.  I loved the flutterponies and the grundels and the witches and their smooze.  Unfortunately once I hit about age eight or so, I was absolutely convinced I was too old for it (despite no one telling me so) and didn't rent it again.

As an adult, it's a piece of nostalgia, but I'll be honest - I don't find it very watchable on a whole.  Still, there's a lot of cute things about it!

Aw those are cute overall!  Not something I'd go out of my way to find but if I saw one at a thrift store I'd probably be tempted (I doubt they come up much stateside.)

Some controversial opinions here:

G1:
Love the style, variety, size, quality, nostalgia, and overall cuteness.
Hate the current trend of re-releasing everything from 'your childhood' as some sort of nostalgia bait merchandising.

G2:
Love the accessories, colors, and gimicks
Hate the limited availability and general misunderstanding of the generation (no MLP Tales isn't G2 fer goodness sake).

G3:
Love the COLORS, style, designs, and general throwback to G1 for sensibilities.
Hate that this is starting to feel like the last generation aimed at a simpler childhood (it's complicated and while there's been licensed merch for all gens, this is the last one before it really starts to feel overbearing to me.)

G3.5:
Love the hair.
Hate the design.

G4:
Love the show.
Hate the rather small, repetitive, lackluster toys that suffer increasingly bad QC.

G4.5:
Love seeing more variety in the poses and ponies.
Hate that it's all Main6 driven.

Pony Life:
Yeah, no.

G5:
Love the articulation.
Hate that the gen has moved almost entirely away from designs that look like horses, are a decent sized toy, have brush-able hair, and reflect freely imaginative (rather than license-driven) play for children.

Bonus Funkos:
Love the idea of more high-end collectables.
Hate that Funko can't produce that sort of thing to save their lives.

If you're still needing this I'm happy to help any time.  I enjoy this sort of thing.

G1 - Easy!  I like other gens but I can't not pick the one I started with as a child!

While I don't really have anywhere to put them now so it's pretty minor - I do rather regret donating my original LPS toys (these were the very first versions from the 90s and I think the cutest.  I had a lot of them, of all kinds of critters.)

I did also donate a 'My Little Kitty' set at one point, but changed my mind, and purchased it again as an adult.

I accidentally donated the ducky from the Scrub-a-Dub Tub with a bunch of barbie stuff (which I do not regret - I was never into Barbie), and again, bought it to make the set complete again later.

I kept most of my childhood MLP brushes/combs in a Happy Meal bucket (McDonald's used to give out buckets for Halloween and Easter instead of toys).  I think I kept most of my pony ribbons in there too.  There was a time when I sure I'd never be in to ponies again and I got rid of all of the contents of the bucket. If I had realized, then that I would one day love ponies again I would have kept them.  I have a few brushes/combs that survived but not many.

I also regret getting rid of my Lullabye Nursery even though it was broken. I wish so much that I had kept it now.  I also gave 2 ponies away to a little girl.

Ponyfan

Oh man!  I accidentally donated all of my ponies ribbons too!  (And I don't exactly regret it - but I would rather have kept them.)  They were kept in a purple plastic Easter basket with the ribbons that were used in my hair - when my mom stopped tying my hair up with ribbons (switching to elastic bands), the whole basket was donated as scrap for sewing projects.

G1 - Cute!  Sweet!  Nostalgic!  Perfect!
G3 - Captured G1 while still feeling unique - very cute and good if a bit saccharine at times.
G2 - Sort of an odd sculpt but lots of fun gimmicks and colors.
G4 - From a toy standpoint - a bit bland, later beset with wonk.  Too many of the M6.  From a media standpoint - rather cute in the first couple seasons, got a bit weird later.
G5 - Not doing anything for me currently.  It's a toy, it's fine, but eh, I don't like 2020s toy design sensibility much (flat faces, big heads/tiny bodies, very simplified style).
G4.5 - Really oddly shaped toys, pretty poorly made.
G3.5 - Quite frankly hideous sculpting, though they did have really nice hair.

One of the wings of my Windy Wing pony, Cool Breeze, starting coming loose (from a lot of play), so instead of it falling off when I brought her somewhere to play (and possibly getting lost), I tore them off.  I couldn't have been more than six at the time.  I regretted it almost immediately - she's still one of my favorites of my childhood herd.

I did restore her with accurate repro wings as an adult though!  She was my first restoration.

Pony Corral / Re: What is your favorite pony color?
« on: June 29, 2022, 09:30:13 AM »
Green!

But I also really like gray ponies like Snuzzle, Autumn Sky, and Velvet Bow - it's not a common color but I think it looks very nice.

Pony Corral / Re: Any collectors here that are also horse people?
« on: June 29, 2022, 07:38:54 AM »
I was a big horse person as a young teen - horse posters, grand champions collection, riding lessons, the works!  I'm not in any kind of position (physically or financially) to own a horse, but if I had land I would definitely love to (whether to ride or to simply give a nice old beast a good retirement.)  I love riding and would love the chance to do it again - we've been trying to organize friends group things (my husband also used to ride and loves horses), though covid put a real wrench in the works with that.

I think horses are nice beasts overall, I don't have a particularly romanticized view of them (at the end of the day, you gotta muck stalls no matter what, and they can have all kinds of personalities) but I like animals and I think they're generally pleasant beasties to interact with.

Have her!  I wasn't planning on keeping the one I did as a deflock practice (her flocking was... so so bad) but I really love her colors.

Pony Corral / Re: Who Hides Their Age Well?
« on: May 24, 2022, 12:29:49 PM »
From what's crossed my desk and what's in my collection -

Aside from any wear from play/environment (frizzy hair, pindot, rust) I think most of the year six and up ponies tend to age pretty well if they didn't have some sort of gimmick in their vinyl or hair that could discolor long-term (watercolor baby seaponies, sparkle ponies, sundazzle - etc.)  Hasbro seemed to have the formulas down pretty well by that point.  Even neon colored ponies from that point (Rockin' beat, paradise babies) age better than earlier attempts (poor Party Time just is so inclined to regrind.)

Specific ponies that seem to age well before that... I've never seen an Applejack with some any problem that wasn't caused by more than age.  The baby ponies from year three (including Firefly, Cotton Candy, Glory, etc.) I've seen have always looked lovely... I'm sure there's more I'm not thinking off of the top of my head.
