Funny! You know, I sometimes have wondered why G1 ponies (or G2, like Sundance here) show up in Japanese media. In the Love*Com live-action movie, there's a Baby Dots 'n Hearts in the scene where Risa and Otani are at the festival (it's one of those shoot-down-the-prizes games, and it's randomly there on the shelf . . . ) G1s were never released in Japan, right?

I don't think so, at least in the 80's. I thought in the late 90's there were two keychains exclusive to Japan with Merry Treat and (baby?) Stockings, though.

Takara were used in Japan for MLP licenses however there was a lot of merch produced in Japan in the 90s "retro" releases. And there were product imported during the 80s as well of course.

Also in the same way a lot of westerners are fascinated by Japanese customs and culture, the same can be true in the opposite direction [as mentioned earlier]. The fact that US toys/products would be sold within Japan throughout the 80s in order to cater to that demand is not surprising especially as MLP was a mainstay of American toy culture. That is no doubt why you see the occasional out of place toy.
