@Taffeta, I think it's awesome that you can actually translate the manga, too. I know one Japanese character, the hiragana one they use for "no," since it's so distinctive. Yay me :) I feel proud whenever I can find it, lol.
You mean this one の? It is cute :DYes, that's the one! My favorite character, lol
I got roped into doing it basically because the fan scanlations of Bleach were being done by a group who were simply rewriting bits and I was in a community of people who wanted to analyse every actual detail, not read a ton of swear words added in to juice up the fights.I can sympathize; I really don't like it when translators take too many liberties and mess up the manga or anime. It happens way too often! In manga I never get to see the original wording (not that I could read it if I could), but in anime it's a pet peeve of mine. I can understand a bit of Japanese when I hear it, and my sister comprehends even more, so when we watch anime together in Japanese with subtitles, sometimes we look at each other and are like, "Wait, that character just said 'I won't forgive you,' right, not 'You *$%%#$*' " (to give an extreme example).
I taught my support advisor at university the horse kanji because she had to see my work so much (which relates to horses and representation of warriors). It's meant to be a horse turning it's head back. I dunno if I see it...To me it kind of looks like a little square animal with five legs (four tiny ones and a curved front one)

Official translations at least are less likely to insert gratuitous swearwords though I admit I still haven't forgiven the official translation of one of my pet manga series turning an onmyouji into a 'sorcerer' and the name Sefuru into "Sefle". So glad that the anime version never got dubbed, that's all I'm going to say.Sefuru sounds so much better than Sefle. Sometimes translators make the strangest decisions when it comes to names. Maybe there's a reason for it and I shouldn't complain, but I've been confused by a few before, as well (mostly in anime). In Gundam SEED, for instance, a character's name is given as Tolle, but my sister and I are pretty sure it should have just been transliterated as Tohru. Most of the characters in that series have pretty hilarious made-up non-Japanese names, though (Kuzzy Buskirk, Dearka, and Yzak come to mind), so the translators probably were just following suit.
So I began watching the anime on youtube. And then one ep was in English and it sounded horrible after so many in Japanese. And the manga in English used Chinese names for things where the anime used the Japanese pronunciation, and it was confusing. So then I decided to learn Japanese (as you do >.>).That brings back memories! The character I remember most from that series (besides the leads) was the one who said "no da" at the end of every sentence  And I think he popped out of a hat. He was my favorite. I have strange favorites. XD
Yuugi was a bit brutal in places, and now the anime is pretty old really. But I really still have a super soft spot for it. It depends on how you feel about characters you like dying.
I finished Sailor Moon Volume 5 today and am looking at Honey So Sweet for my next manga series.Yes, yes! Read it! It's so good!
I'm currently reading Volume 1 of Cardcaptor Sakura :) Right before that it was Kill La Kill Volumes 2 and 3 :DCool, so you're heading to Japan?
I was also watching the Sakura anime, but took a break to branch out to learn about a few more shows before I go to Japan ^.^
Noragami but its on hiatus. I really hope it gets finished.I loved Noragami and am in the middle of Bungo Stray Dogs. I like the mix of humor and action.

Aw, man, Gravitation! That was one of two 'starter' yaoi titles that most people in my time got in on. The other was Sanami Matoh's FAKE, the one I got into XD I tried Gravitation, got the first two volumes but I honestly couldn't get into it because of the characters.
Junjou Romantica is a classic I simply haven't read, I probably should. I love World's Greatest First Love by the same manga-ka, weirdly
EDIT: Sorry Taffeta, didn't realise you were also talking about that title ^^; I really got into that title since, well, I sympathised with the tight deadlines parts and nods towards manga publishing as at the time I was working in a comic shop soliciting online titles for the company website. I am waiting on Vol.7 but manga titles are suddenly having weird releases in the UK, it's damn annoying
The bookstore finally got Honey So Sweet volume 2 in so I bought volume 1 and 2 today.Awesome! I hope you liked it :) I feel like it strikes a good balance between sweet and realistic, and the artwork is lovely.

Im reading Detective Conan these days . . .I've never read the Detective Conan manga, but my sister has; I have watched pretty much every Detective Conan anime episode Westerners can get their hands on. It's my sister's favorite series and so we often get her foreign DVDs of the series as gifts. There are so crazy many! Close to 800 episodes at this point, I think. I want Conan to finally get big again and end up with Ran and to finally find out who the Black Org boss is! It's been, like, 20 years, lol . . .

Yes! I do like the normal episodes/chapters but I enjoy it most when the main story is moving forward or when Kaitou Kid is featured. :biggrin:Im reading Detective Conan these days . . .I've never read the Detective Conan manga, but my sister has; I have watched pretty much every Detective Conan anime episode Westerners can get their hands on. Lol I tend to ask myself WHY am I still reading / watching this as every episode / story comes out the same or pretty much like the 799 we watched before... but then its still kinda funny how the mysterys get solved, so I still read and watch it :P

xD It's my bad for using the Japanese name, probably. For some reason I've never read the Junjou manga. I watched the anime, but I've only read the Sekaiichi manga. I love the anime for both though I think the start of Junjou kind of waves a big flag in your face THIS IS YAOI! The problem with Sekaiichi is that half of it is in manga and half of it is in novel form as far as I can tell. Manga is just Ritsu and Shouta's stories and the others- Chiaki and Yokozawa's stories are novels. I've got some of the latter but none of Chiaki and Hattori's storyline :/
I didn't realise there was an issue with the translated volumes coming out. I can't remember if the last one I read was 10 or 11...? Which means there is still a bunch to come out in English and no excuse for no translations O.o.
I like Sekaiichi better except that I adore Hiroki in Junjou Egoist and his book-throwing wall-headbutting general incompetence at anything that isn't academia.
Finished what I had concerning Resident Evil Mangas...^It's not zombie related or similar to RE but Fuan no Tane is a really good horror manga.
Now what to read? Anybody with an advise on what horror / zombie stuff I should try next?
Finally got another volume of Honey So Sweet. :)Yay! Which one are you on now? I'm trying to pace myself, but I think I'm going to buy the last volume soon.

How does everyone storing their manga? At the moment I keep mine in special DVD storage boxes for the most precious ones, and large DVD moving storage boxes for all the rest. They're nice and snug inside, even holds the over-large Juné volumes! But once I finally get a bookcase for my manga ... I had the DVD tower from IKEA but I found it a) too tall! I'm only 5'2! and b) the chambers far too narrow. Manga were either packed a slight too loose or REALLY tightly which had me worried about damaging edges taking them in/out.I just have mine on a cheap white bookcase. It's about five 1/2 feet tall and three feet wide, and the way I have the shelves arranged they fit pretty nicely. I love lining up my manga in order and looking at them, ha ha. It's a very satisfying feeling. Missing a volume in the middle triggers me a little, though.
I am trying to find a bookcase that has glass doors so I can admire the collection (I know, I'm weird over a bunch of £6-£10 books -_-) and keep out dust, but doesn't have huge gaps at the top and front, and doesn't have pegs holding the shelf in place that could press into the back/front of bookending manga.

My husband and I own a LOT of manga... it's in storage at the moment but we actively bought from 2008-2011, plus there was stuff from before we met each other.
According to this spreadsheet I made, there's ~430 unique titles, about half of which are complete sets. I am not even sure HOW MANY books that actually is, or how many books it would be if all the series were complete!
But we haven't been active in the consumption of animated Japanese culture in ohhhhh about 5 years now. Sometimes we watch an episode or two of anime, but it's difficult to read subtitles for hours and we don't speak well enough to survive without it.
We do sort of want to get back into it... but it seems like we are SO FAR behind already! *shrug* So eventually we will probably just dive in again, but I think it's more probable that we create a manga ourselves...

Almost all the series I am trying to complete, they all got switched over to digital versions when TokyoPop went out of the print manga business. I refuse to buy digital books, I want to hold them in my hands. So depressing... they don't really print much manga anymore...I'd never heard of Narumi Kakinouchi but I googled her. Her artwork is really pretty! Kind of watercolor-y and flow-y (to use very sophisticated terms!) I like her style.
Random thought: does anyone else LOOOOOOOOVE the artwork of Narumi Kakinouchi ? You know, Vampire Princess Miyu?

Oh, I know a manga I will be reading/would be reading if the mangaka recovers and gets back to writing it. Saiyuuki. Saiyuuki Reload Blast, to be accurate. I love Saiyuuki, <3. But its poor creator is ill so often that it's constantly on hiatus.

Glad to hear it. I got tired of waiting for my regular source and ebay'ed it. I've since moved onto Kamisama Kiss and Fullmetal Alchemist - I adore the anime's of both, and figure the manga could only get better.
I just finished Fushigi Yugi vol 2, but I really didn't like it. I read the first volume and wasn't super impressed, then I read the second volume because I happened to already have it and I really disliked it. There's a transgender character who gets picked on by the other characters and I'm just not down for that. :( It's sad because I've enjoyed other things the author wrote. This comment made me sad because it's not the case at all.
I looked through the manga section of Barnes and Noble today to see if anything really caught my eye but there are so many series it's a little overwhelming for me to try to figure out what a good next series would be for me.I've been meaning to watch In This Corner of the World; I got the DVD as a gift and it looks really good. I haven't read the manga you mentioned (including Twinkle Star), but I've seen some of their animes. I've seen most of Sailor Moon and I can say that my sister really likes it; I don't personally like Serena/Usagi's personality, so that pretty much ruins the series for me, lol. Her friends -- Rei and Makoto esp. for me -- are likeable, though, and the series is a classic. To be fair, I watched the English dub for the most part, and they changed the storyline in some ways, so the manga might be better than I think.
I did look at a few but left with no new manga. The ones I looked at today or am considering picking up.

I definitely recommend the manga! I've never gotten round to watching the anime (been meaning to for ages - I did watch a couple of eps but couldn't quite get into it, but I would like to get back to it one day..) but from what I've heard, the anime ended halfway through the manga's story? The manga has a really nice ending. It's kinda long, but not hundreds of volumes long or anything. I'd definitely recommend it ^_^
HAHA sometimes they DO grow like that! I have had some truly hysterical inappropriate produce come from my garden...
It looks like my bookstore has restocked most of the manga I was interested in but I will have to wait a while before I can get new books. :)
I've been reading the Kodansha Comics English version of Sailor Moon. I just finished volume 8. I know they are releasing Sailor Moon Eternal edition soon but since I've bought most of my Sailor Moon manga within the past couple of years I don't want to spend money on a new edition just yet. Thanks for the link to the comparison pic banditpony. :) I like the size of the current edition books. I do wonder if the Sailor Moon Eternal Edition will have more Acts in each volume or if they will just put more pages of full color art in the book. It looks like the English translation has been revised a little also but again I’m used to the current English version. :)
I’ll probably skip Sailor Moon Eternal unless I can’t get the current versions if the last few volumes.

i have most of the SM artbooks already... no need to re-buy the manga just because it would have said content in it...
I have the opposite problem in that getting hold of manga that I want here is sometimes tricky. I only read it in Japanese these days anyway, but that's actually a good thing because it means I conserve space and only ever buy the series I'm really intent on. I have some older manga that I got before I learned Japanese. I think I have all of Fruits Basket but across 3 languages (English, French and Japanese) which is destabilising xD.
The only ones I can really get to these days though are Haruka, Fushigi Yuugi and Saiyuuki. I have to go digging for the others...
Thanks xD but it's not really about finding them, it's the mixture of space and expenditure. I tend to only buy series that I have a strong attachment to for that reason. I've bought in bulk second hand online before but the shipping is costly even if the books aren't overall. So you might pay 500 yen for 15 volumes but then get stung on postage xD.
For new stuff there's always places like play asia, cdjapan, amazon etc. When I was in Japan I also saw whole sets of manga being sold cheap in second hand stores like bookoff which also sell online - but I knew I couldn't get them into the case to take home :( I brought second hand DVDs of retired anime back with me but no manga :/
There;s quite a lot of manga in English here but I am not really a fan of translated manga. There have been series for which I've preferred the anime because even though anime often abridges thing, frequently the dialogue is closer to the original in the Japanese version than any translated version, at least in English. Dunno about other languages but in English there's also a trend to westernise terms or name order and you lose the nuances. Having also spent some time on a forum retranslating scenes from a series for a fandom because the only online scanlators played loose and fast with the original, made mistakes and inserted swear words and colloquialisms instead of actually rendering it properly, I lost faith in online translations. This one community I'm talking about, they'd translate in a hurry from a Chinese translation of a Japanese original and stuff got muddled. There's still one key aspect of that manga that fans are hugely divided on because the actual canon says it one way, and fan translation says it another. I'm a detail geek so I like to know what's actually being said or happening...and picking up nuances in the language that don't get translated.
Tactics isn't that obscure, is it?
I have a few games that go with franchises. I also like the live seiyuu events because they have such twisted senses of humour and they're so funny with how they spoof up their characters in hugely unlikely scenarios. I think sometimes that makes me more connected to a franchise than just the manga on its own. I feel like a lot of stuff doesn't get translated outside of Japan, which is a real shame.
I admit I don't see or hear much talk about Tactics these days though back when the anime series came out it was a bit more talked about I think. I have never looked at the manga, somewhere I have the anime on DVD for some reason though I don't think I actually ever got around to watching it. For me a really obscure manga is one that never got picked up for translation, like Sotsugyou M (which kind of had a whole seiyuu doing live concerts thing, plus novels, etc, but nothing ever got translated into English. The animated special is on youtube but is only about 0.1% close to the actual overall storyline or characters.
I think this is a problem particularly with older anime/manga that predate internet mass uploading or scanning or whatever. Even ones from the dialup internet period (like SotsuM). Now it's much easier for many series to be translated online and there's a wider understanding that there's a global interest which maybe wasn't always there before?
And then there's series like the Haruka one I mentioned before - the manga was released in English, the anime main series was also released in the US on DVD with horrible subtitles that make a mess of the names and the cultural aspects of Heian Japan. But the thing is Haruka is a six game franchise now spanning almost 20 years of production and six different settings. Although there are animated OVA for 2 and 3 (both on youtube except the last part of 3) they've never had the full release outside of Japan. There's no manga except random chapters also not released outside of Japan. Haruka 4 has no animation and only brief chapters of manga, not translated. It will also never have an anime now because the voice artist for the central female character has passed away. Haruka 5 had manga for two or three volumes then got dropped which I still feel is a shame, also didn't get translated. Haruka 6 has manga at the moment - as far as I know, no translation. Both Haruka 1 and Haruka 5 have live stage shows as well and they have regular annual seiyuu events. None of this is available in English or even with subs. And the games of course are only available in Japanese. The most successful Haruka games seem to be 1 and 3 as they keep reformatting, rereleasing and upgrading them - but nothing from 3 has ever been released in English. So to most people outside of Japan, Haruka is a 26 episode anime series and a 17 volume manga series and that is all. I don't even think they released the movie in English or with English subs.
So what is a pretty successful and popular Japanese franchise spanning almost 2 decades...is not really that well known in other places. Whereas other series are picked up and the foreign language market is flooded with them. I tend to have a rule that if I've seen a manga or anime in a shop in the UK, it's mainstream xD If not, it's not...
But I can't remember with Tactics because I never looked for the manga.
All my negative experiences of translated manga admittedly come from scanlations rather than official translations, and particularly in the Bleach fandom, where things were really done messily. I am aware of this perhaps more because I did a lot of retranslating for a forum there more than I have done with any other - Bleach being a mainstream popular manga and on a weekly schedule meant everything was done with a rush and there were lots of people clamouring for it so people didn't take time to correct their errors.
I can’t read Japanese so I read translated manga but I know that there might be translation errors or other issues with the translated versions.
The official translations sometimes have mistakes also. The Kodansha translation of Sailor Moon before the Eternal edition was released has a pretty famous error where they mistranslated Jupiter's attack "Sparkling Wide Pressure" as "Spark Ring Pressure" and even when they became aware of the error they made no effort to fix it in the version that's been in print since 2012.
I think keeping that characteristic in Bleach would have added another layer to the character. I've noticed in Honey So Sweet and Your name translated versions they keep the nuances of the honorifics. In one scene in Your Name Mitsuha in Taki's body is scolded by another member of the wait staff for using san instead of senpai when addressing Miss Okedera. In Honey So Sweet the characters don't refer to each other by their first name unless they are close or have permission to do so. :)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure even in the English version of Fruits Basket (And it's a long time since I read it) Touru's friends are still referred to by their nicknames as in the Japanese, even though their actual first names are Arisa and Saki if I remember rightly. I may be wrong but I think they're still Uo and Hana..?

Dunno about the more recent translation, but the old Tokyopop translation definitely has them as Uo-chan and Hana-chan. IIRC they were really good about leaving the honorifics in that series.

The only thing is I HATE DIGITAL FORMAT. -_-
For my research too, I like hard copy.
All the Sanami Matoh series I have in print format got cancelled and are not available fully in North America. AUGH
Pretty sure it's because some of the manga companies went out of business: Broccoli and ADV Manga in this case. I need the second volume of Until the Full Moon and the third volume of By the Sword.
I picked up volumes 4-6 of Takane and Hana today. I need Fruits Basket 7-12 but 7 is out of stock at my bookstore, Amazon and a major bookstore online. :(
Why does this always happen when I get interested in a manga series? There's always at least one volume I have trouble getting.
Ponyfan
I bet you're right Taffeta about why I'm having trouble finding volume 7 of Fruits Basket.
I think the new anime starts airing in April in Japan? I wonder when other countries will get it?
Ponyfan
I didn't realize Funimation already had a placeholder for the new Fruits Basket anime,
I think anything can happen with animie. Hopefully another version of Saiyuuki will do justice to the Even the Worm arc. :)

Is * an actual volume or did you just hit the shift key when hitting the 8? :)
I still need to go buy Yona #29. I just don't want to pay shipping from Japan for just one book...*sobs*.
Currently re-reading Uraboku (aka Uragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitteiru...there's a reason everyone just calls it 'Uraboku' ahaha) from the beginning <3 I can't actually count how many times I've read it by now, to be honest. This series is so good and seriously underrated. Also re-reading No. 6 from the beginning, as well. I need to re-read the novel again too.
Aside from that, I'm keeping up with the translations of the Mo Dao Zu Shi manhua!
I just finished volume 8 of the omnibus Fruits BasketSpoilerNow I know the whole story about the hat. :) Although I'm a little confused why Kyoko would reveal so much to Kyo about her past life when Kyo was still a young boy unless there's some kind of connection between Kyo and Kyoko that hasn't been revealed yet
Ponyfan
I will probably be getting Yona soon :) It sounds really interesting.
I just finished Volume 9 of the omnibus edition of Fruits Basket. ( I think I've read through volume 18 of manga)
@TaffetaSpoiler
Is the thing that you didn't want to spoil for me regarding Akito the fact that Akito is actually a female instead of male?
Ponyfan
Congrats lovesbabysquirmy. :)
@TaffetaSpoilerKnowing Akito is female puts a different perspective on why she acts the way she does to the other characters although I still think she is extremely cruel at times.
I picked up the first 3 volumes of Yona today.

I finished Fruits basket. :) Overall I really enjoyed it and I will be reading it again sometime in the future. I still have the extra stories to read but found myself a little confused about the events in the last 2 booksSpoilerDuring Tohru's confrontation with Akito after Akito stabbed Tohru did the cliff just fall away from Tohru's feet? Or was there a lightning strike? Also is what breaks the curse loving someone completely including their faults and being loved in return even if it's not romantically?
I also bought the next 3 volumes of Yona of the Dawn. I hold Taffeta responsible for introducing me to Yona. :P :D
I also got a really nice Fruits Basket poster advertising the new anime when I bought the Yona manga books. :)

I'm actually going to reread the whole series of Takane and Hanna again, just cause. I'm all caught up on most of the others I read. Black Butler I've caught up online but I still like to have the books once they come out in english.
I watched the Yona anime online so I'm kinda behind on reading the manga, simply because what I've read so far is sorta a recap of what I've watched. I think I have up to vol. 5 right now but have only read the first 3 at the moment.

@ Uni - Yona is awesome, and there's some slight reshuffling I think in the early manga to the series but it's pretty close. But as Ponyfan says the anime covers 1-8. I actually only have volumes from 8 onwards for this reason at the moment.

@Taffeta
Seeing one clip from the anime was all it took to get me hooked on Yona. :)
When I have some money to I intend on getting the first 7 to complete the set because I know there are some omake chapters but for now it's not a priority as the anime exists xD.
I should probably read Hero Academia since a new series is coming out and the students/school is entertaining. I wish I was more enthusiastic about the bad guys, though. I am not interested in any of them, even the revelations about Shigaraki in the end of what has been animated didn't interest me and the main bad guy villain also doesn't interest me.
..Big problem. I kind of wish whenever they appear that they hurry up and go away so we can get back to meaningful plot...and since that is the plot, it's thus far discouraged me.

Yesssss, I cried...I will admit multiple times watching the anime. But heck, I just cried watching the latest fruits basket episode with the little tiger girl...I'm a big softy.
Ah, my brain is spinning ><
Uni, if you cried at the anime so far, you're gonna probably cry more with the manga. I'm sure Ponyfan will agree with me with certain sections xD.

I don't know if I need spoiler warning but I'll do it anyway. But just so you know, I am not afraid of spoilers...yea I'm one of those nuts who doesn't whine about them.Spoilerare you talking a bad guy that suddenly has some kinda legitimate reason for looking like a jerkpants? ooooo...my favorite kinda badguy. Did his mom not hug him enough? (jokes)
@Uni - with school things it depends on the plot and the characters. I hated school so sometimes it's cathartic to watch others having a nightmare there too xD no, I'm kidding. But some stories I don't really care. Others are just insipid/beyond me and I probably am too old to enjoy them. I dunno.
As I go forward, I have collected a small group of favourites and when I think about it, some of them begin with a school connection but most of them don't stay there.
And Saiyuuki, which is one of my absolute favourites, is full of drinking and smoking, neither of which I do, so that's interesting. Also driving a car that's a dragon. Which I also don't do. Dragons are good though :D
Yona is awesome. The more it goes on the more I'm impressed with her writing, and her art, and the humour that runs through what is often a really brutal story. Right now though it's doing my head in a little bit becauseSpoilerKeishuk I have always thought of as the bad guy, and now he's the bad guy but not the bad guy? And I don't really know how to take this whole shift that's going on..?SpoilerI'm putting this in double triple spoiler tags to try and deflect Ponyfan's spoiler curiosity, but...SpoilerIn the most recent battle, Keishuk's forces and those of Yona join up together to fight the invading enemy and win. Prior to this Keishuk was a jerk and had Jaeha and Zeno shot out of the sky, and obviously Jaeha got hurt, so that annoyed me. But now Keishuk is all like wanting to be buddy buddy with them and I don't realy get his motives. In any case, he's dragged them back to the palace...and the last chapter was full of really awkward scenes with the dragons and Suwon, Yona, Hak and Yun...and Keishuk...
I have no idea where she is going with this. I don't often have a series where I have no idea where the narrative is going, but this is one of them. This writer likes to throw plot curveballs, and can make you love a character you begin hating. It's exciting and scary because I don't trust Keishuk, and I don't trust Suwon, but obviously the dragons are only going to support Yona...so...
This is not going to end well. I can't see Hak forgiving Suwon. I can't see Yona forgetting her father was murdered. I feel like something is coming and I don't know what...
But I am not convinced that Keishuk is as bad as I thought he was now. He explained he was taken in and supported by Yuhon, which explains his loyalty to Suwon and to Yuhon's line...and turns the whole "killing Il" thing back on Suwon.
Ah, my brain is spinning ><

Furuba's new animation is absolutely lovely. I'm so glad they decided to do it so many years on as it handles every character with so much more sensitivity and care than the original anime. And somehow the moralising ghost of Kyouko doesn't seem quite so obnoxiously there in this version. She seems more human.
Ah, my brain is spinning ><

Haha xD I dunno, it's not that explicit. But yeah, that's the guy :)
Takane would be Ta as in tap, ka as in cap, ne as in neck. Ta-ka-ne. Japanese is a very staccato language and every syllable is sounded and has basically the same length unless indicated with a macron or double vowel.
The names in Yona are mostly derived from Korean so you get Japanified Korean stuff going on. I write them as the manga does, kind of, but there are other more official spellings for some of them I think. Like some people write Yun as Yun, some as Yoon, and Sinha as Sin-ah, and so on.
now I have to retrain my brain to say Takane the correct way...Ta Ka Neee....Ta Ka Neeee. Wait, is it Neeee or Neh?
The only way I could fix this is to try to set the correct way to a song...
I've been thinking about my favorite manga series and there are some that feature high school age characters but being in school is not the main focus of the plot like Fruits Basket.Ha, like Battle Royale? :)

I just ordered Yona vol 30 and DnA:ActII vol 18.
I have Pavane vol 1 and haven't read it. I am still finishing my manga collection by the artist. There were like 12 series that Tokyopops demise cut off for me.
I absolutely love that Koge-Donbo* makes her own doujinshi! Many are fan-made but it's awesome when the original mangaka is like, "Um... here's some stuff from my imagination that my publisher would NEVER approve or print." ;)
Absolutely no word of a lie, I started learning Japanese because I wanted to read the Fushigi Yuugi gaiden novels and the only translation was German (-.-). I jokingly said that it'd be quicker than waiting for an English translation.
Fast forward 12 years. I've read the gaiden. Guess what? Still no translations ;)
I am seriously going to start rereading Furuba's manga. Since season 1 has ended now and season 2 looks like being next year, maybe spring...I will have to crack open the volumes again. The anime cannot leave me with a teaser like that and expect me to ignore it, dammit ><.

I have a huge back catalogue it's not even funny ...
This is a random thought, but does anyone remember Descendants of Darkness ( Yami no Matsuei))? I gave away my books to charity a couple of years back, it was one of the first lots of not-strictly yaoi manga I bought. I remember that it was hugely popular back in my time, I liked the art, I really appreciated the dark and horrible nature of the evil doctor character ... but the attitude of the manga-ka REALLY, REALLY put me off. I especially remember them berating fans for sending in letters written in pencil rather than ink, and I think there was also an admonishment for sending gifts? These were in the LINER NOTES of the main manga pages, I was just so put off by how bitter, angry and just overall irritated with fans they sounded. Like, seriously what is your problem?!
I recently looked it up again, looks like it's never getting continued. The gif of Tzusuki with ears and a tail was a lot of people's go-to avatar on message boards for a long time, and the 'gateway to yaoi' thing is ... kinda justified as a comment XD It had an anime, but I found the summoned attacks in the manga sort-of confusing, but that doesn't help when you are not clued-up on your Japanese mythology.
[Still think Tatsumi and Tzusuki would have been a good pairing, despite myself]

Ooh, she finally wrote Byakko?
I've wondered if she ever would. Although the problem is that if you've seen/read FY you know how both the Byakko and Genbu stories end before you begin reading them. Genbu's is quite horrible and Byakko's is just sad...so...I don't know if I will read them or not.
Although that basically buries my fanfic from 12 years ago in the dust xD LOL
FY (the main run) was published in English. I have the English volumes somewhere, because I started learning Japanese because of FY. But I don't remember who published them and I don't know if they're still in print. The anime is on CR, though, and if there's going to be a Byakko story they may well reprint the original series. With Furuba doing so well it would make sense as they're of similar vintage.
All the manga I've put into the Little Library Box has finally returned some goodwill :)
I found Onegai Teacher vol.1 today! it's been a long time since I saw the anime but I think I remember the comedy premise of this one...
oh and happy 21,300th post for me. :accomplished:
That reminds me of when I was in Japan and the BookOff stores and their second hand manga shelves. Kyoto had multiple BookOff stores and the one in the main shopping district was really big. Shelves and shelves and shelves of stuff...
They'd be selling the entire run of a manga (even ones with 70 or 80 volumes!) shrinkwrapped together for like 10-15$ equivalent (obviously in Japanese, but that isn't an issue for me).
Not my image, but an example of what I mean...
But I didn't have case space to bring ANY OF THEM back with me.
It was heartbreaking :/
Kind of glad I hadn't discovered Daiya by then though. Or I would've felt compelled to try...so many of the early volumes go out of print and it's a pain. I still don't have a complete run of act 1.
I just binged through a re-read of Fushigi Yugi again :D
I've just been checking up on release dates and discovered Daiya Act II 26 and Yona 35 are both due out this month, so I'll hold off on 25 and 34 from Amazon.jp until the end of the month. I don't like Ichidai Sankou players being on the cover of Daiya manga. I'm getting territorial. ;) Having Nori on 25 is nice though.
The image on 34 of Yona is cute but I like the one on 35 better. <3
I really need to actually read the last couple of volumes I have of that though. I'm up to date with Daiya but not Yona.
I got my manga and it came off our quarantine table today ;)
My first thing is always to look at the end of the Yona volumes to see who's still alive...
There's a whole random new character I never saw before though, so I guess I missed a lot.
The Daiya volumes have got as far as the start of the game that's currently reaching the end in the newly released chapters, so it's pretty up to date. Although it's an annoyingly long and frustrating game...;)
It depends on whether they're new or I just don't remember them, but right now I'm not sure who they are o.O.SpoilerI think it's always Jaeha I'm most relieved to see when I get a new volume. I don't know why but I always have it in my head that he's the most vulnerable...maybe because he's the oldest, but maybe also because he's had some pretty hard things happen to him.
I mean, not as hard as Zeno, but Zeno kind of doesn't count when it comes to character death...
Also on the Daiya front...
This sums up most of my feelings about the current ongoing game in the manga, for lots of reasons.
I'm reading My Hero Academia as the weekly chapters come out. $2 a month isn't so bad for a digital shonen jump subscription.
My brother and I are also swapping various copies of Junji Ito's works with each other, we're both big fans.
I still need to catch up my Yona volumes. @Ponyfan, I think you are about at the same place as I am, almost...I keep meaning to get to it and then I get distracted. :)
Daiya manga is still on hiatus. It's the only one I read online, but it isn't due to resume till next month. And frankly, where it ended before the hiatus bothered me on a few levels and pleased me on others. It was a logical place to break, if the writer needed a break, but there are things swirling around that chapter that raise questions.
In short, I've spent the last eight weeks wanting to shake Eijun xD and worrying about what the impact will be going forward...
I recently started a new (to me at least) manga called A Man & His Cat. I really liked it. Cute and a little bittersweet, but mostly lighthearted and fun.
@Ponyfan - so I have till next month to catch up on Yona then? XD
I accidentally missed a volume of Daiya when buying the latest ones so that's annoying. I try and wait till I have several books together before importing them, so it will have to wait for now. The manga going on hiatus means that the published manga books for Daiya have reached the hiatus point, so Bk 28 ends with Eijun being annoying.
There probably aren't enough chapters yet to do 29, either. Sigh.
Wow. That means they're still in Act 1? That's nuts. O.o.
Ok, so I need to read vol 32 by 5th october so we can discuss it xD. Got it xD.
I decided to get some volumes of Mashiro no Oto but haven't read them yet.
I'm hoping to get Yona 32 and Way of the Househusband 6 this week. :D There's a few series I would like to start looking at but some of the volumes need to be reprinted since the first printings are exhausted. There's also a paper shortage in the US that I'm sure is part of the reason that some books aren't being reprinted as fast as usual.
I also rain in to a Daiya spoiler but I think it's a pretty small one.Spoiler
Miyuki told Furuya that he's planning on going pro after the summer tournament and Eijun overhead even though Miyuki didn't realize it at the time? Also we're getting closer to the Seidou vs Inashiro game?
Ponyfan
I'd be happy to post comparison pictures between the older Kodansha releases and Eternal if anyone is interested. :)
That'd be awesome if you could! :) I love seeing comparison pics for this sort of thing.
And then there are just mistakes. My favourite one is from Daiya, where the subber (this is CR) seems to have given up on the line, because the sub says, "what does he say?" What the character actually says is something like, "he held down the inning without conceding a run" or something on those lines, and it's pretty clearly audible even with the background noise. But I feel like that was a note for them to come back to it and they didn't and it accidentally got through.
Third Prince Jing Shao was victorious in war and always surrounded by countless beauties. However, he was wrongly framed and lost everything. Yet the only person who followed him was the unfavoured male concubine that he neglected for years…… After his reincarnation, Jing Shao decided to start afresh and chase after his male wife. Although it seems things will not go as planned, chasing a wife is harder than he thought!
Kodansha never did fix those errors for the regular editions? Oh man, why?? I could understand if they were just tiny typos or nitpicky things, but...
I forgot about "Princess Beryl". Not sure how they managed THAT one, her name is completely in English to begin with...! "Spark Ring" I can see where they got that one from, the problem is that somehow no one caught in the QC stage.. but "Princess Beryl"... How...
edit: ooh, I did just find [this](http://missdream.org/editorials/sailor-moon-kodansha-release-vol-2-errors/), which suggests they were going for something along the lines of "Princess [Serenity], I am Queen Beryl.." etc etc... that'd make sense, but how in the heck did they end up botching it up into "Princess Beryl"? o.O
On the Daiya spoiler....SpoilerYup.
That actually happened before Eijun losing the plot xD.
I am not up to date with the current manga as I'm too much of a coward to read the final. But there we are...
They'd better win this time -.-

I am not up to date with the current manga as I'm too much of a coward to read the final. But there we are...
They'd better win this time -.-SpoilerI'm really happy Seidou made it to the finals. I hope they win the final game. I will be devastated if Seidou loses again after everything that's happened since the last Summer Tournament.
Ponyfan
SpoilerWell, the game has started O.o. It's really now or never for the whole series tbh. If they don't win with this team then the whole manga kind of has no meaning...
I've been rereading Yona! I rewatched the series and started on the manga again today. I still get so sad readingSpoilerTaejun's awesomeness that comes immediately after the animation ends. I want people to appreciate Taejun more.
On Yona,SpoilerI just reread the volume after the Kai/Fire Tribe revolt where Suwon and Kyouga go to the village and see Taejun running around like a mad thing. It's both beautiful and hilarious and somehow it makes you feel so proud of the journey Taejun has been on from the spoiled guy laughing on the cliff face to this guy doing the laundry and caring for the sick villagers.
I'm amused also reading Zeno's dialogue in these chapters and how they have absolutely NO idea about him. Yet it's also kind of lovely that even though he doesn't appear to have any meaningful power or strength, they still include him and don't reject him.
I don't think I really have favourites among the dragons but there are moments when I think Zeno speaks to me a little bit extra.
I also found vol 32 although I haven't read it properly yet, just skimmed it, since I'll read it properly in sequence with the others when I get there. There are some interesting things in it. I have many thoughts.
I also realised I had got 35 but not 36 and so I ordered that today along with the missing volume I have for Daiya Act II. 37 comes out around Christmas in Japanese. The English volumes are almost caught up O.O.
I sneak peeked at the latest chapter of Daiya today. This game is going to go on a while. It's still only the 4th inning.
@Ponyfan I've read up to a point in Yona 33. The rest is on my to do list. When you read them you'll realise what that point is and why I stopped there.
I really dislike the first episode of Haikyuu. I actually gave up on watching it a couple of times because of that, but there are a lot of Haikyuu fans in the Daiya fanbase and they said it gets better as it goes on. I liked it from ep 2. So yeah, I don't know if manga vol 1 is much better than ep 1, but even if you're not sure, don't let the start put you off. It's a lot less heart destroying than Daiya but it's a good sports series with some decent characters imo.
That said I still need to finish the anime as far as it currently is.
Chihayafuru is another one you might want to check out, albeit it might eat your soul. Again, I've watched and not read, but there's a scene in Daiya where Eijun is reading Chihayafuru xD. And a drama where Jun has it in his bag as well :)
I made the mistake of checking in with the Daiya manga.
Yep, definitely should not read Daiya while this game is ongoing.
I very much hope you mean Yona 34 xD. Else you're living in the future O.O.
I've been swamped by academic stuff, so I haven't read anything recently :(
My general rule with manga is only to chase up series that I already know I like from the anime, although there have been some exceptions.
I think the artist who drew for Angelique and illustrated probably the Saiunkoku manga - definitely the novels - was pretty decent as well. Kairi Yuura...I think.
I think that would make sense. Like I said, I skimmed over it so I know the broad strokes of the flashback and stuff but that's all.
I think 37 is correct at the moment. I believe there are 2 chapters not yet in volume form, so I would imagine 38 to come out in the early summer maybe? Chapters are less frequent for Yona than Daiya.
I have been dipping in and out of Daiya manga. There was a break this week though. Of course, it was a cliffhanger. Sigh. This game is going to go on forever, I swear it is.
That Silent Voice cover is pretty :D
My favourite Daiya cover is probably this one...
Mostly because of what it represents ;) The new boss and his two sidekicks. I genuinely love the bonds built up between Miyuki and Mochi especially, but also Zono. Zono needs more love.
My favourite actual volume is still act 1 vol 47. Although not all of it got animated and bits of it that did are in the OVA not the proper series. Yeah, I seem to have a habit of picking those bits.
Yes, it's the end of Act 1, so ties up the stuff after that autumn final, including the stuff in the 4th and 5th OVA and some other things. There are some details it includes that the animation missed out, likeSpoilerMochi's old friends being at Koushien to support him
Furuya with his family in Tokyo - I think that wasn't animated?
Mochi with his Mum and his Grandpa
The full scene with Miyuki going home.
Ochiai's daughter at the ground getting excited about ants.
I've caught up a little bit with the Daiya manga lately. I'm not going to spoiler stuff related to the game, but there was a really touching scene which I love and am going to share (in spoiler tag)...SpoilerMiyuki's Dad is watching the game :D
I think it's the first time we've EVER seen him directly watching like that.
It's a really lovely couple of scenes across these last two chapters, with a little bit of flashback of a conversation between them before Miyuki went to Seidou, where Miyuki is worried about leaving his Dad on his own if he goes into dorms.
I've always felt Miyuki and his Dad are close, just his Dad works really long hours.
It's lovely to see that in black and white :D
On vol 47...SpoilerThere is never any direct update on the hospital trip except what is in OVA 4, which is the coach telling the team he's out, which is a surprise to Miyuki as well, and putting Kuramochi in the captain spot for the Jingu tournament. There are some nice scenes of Miyuki being teased for failing to be a good cheerleader as well. But nothing at the hospital, just confirmation of his injury putting him out of Jingu.
The animated OVA includes almost all of that section, except the fact Miyuki is absent from class on the day after the final.
Hrm.SpoilerAgreed on Toku and Miyuki. He's an overworked single Dad doing his best. It made me really happy to see because it rubbished all the silly stories about Toku being a nasty unpleasant person. I've seen a few of those and they always rubbed me up the wrong way.
There's always those fans that like to twist things :/
I should add that he's not at the game, he's watching it on TV from his kitchen. :)
Re the Autumn game aftermath, the only thing I can think of is the moment at the end of the game where he flops all over Kuramochi and tells them he sucks at being Captain, but that's about all. In the end titles they're in the car and Zono is clearly nagging him about something but he's definitely awake. Anything else is probably fanfic speculation, though honestly not unrealistic given the mess he presents as in that scene we do have.
Iirc the first half of OVA 4 is Haruno's scrapbooking and talking about the tournament and stuff. The second half starts with Kataoka reporting to the players about Miyuki's injury, and Miyuki is there too.
But it's not clear which day that is. The fact he's not in class on the Monday but is in uniform during that meeting makes me think it's probably *not* the next day. Maybe the Tuesday? So we really don't know what happened, canon-wise, in-between that car ride and Kataoka telling the team Miyuki is benched.
The OVA omits the empty classroom seat but that's pretty much all. It's literally one panel, I guess they thought it was unnecessary.
I did have a quick look on yt but I can't find the OVA with subs. I did find a montage of clips from it of Miyuki sidelined, but that was all.
The aftermath chapters from vol 47 are probably translated online somewhere but I remember someone saying that there were bits missing and so I don't know how they are listed. I have a feeling they have funny titles, but I can't remember offhand what those are.
Of course, Ima Koi could also mean now (I'm a) fish, depending on the characters used *innocent*
Ima Koi o shite imasu makes more sense ;)
On Daiya...SpoilerI think that I've read the mangaka was pretty burned out by the time he got to vol 47. So probably there were things he didn't go into. I think it's a shame, though. I think a lot of fans wanted to see a dynamic in which Miyuki, Zono and Mochi had more bonding time tbh. I certainly think that by act 2 the friendship between Miyuki and Mochi especially is clear, but also Zono as well to some degree. And Shirasu, who seems to me like defacto vice vice Captain at times.
But I like character bonding moments, so.
On Daiya fandom...SpoilerThe Daiya fandom is frustrating, honestly. Sadly Eijun fans are the bulk of the problem.
Fanfiction is kind of fine in my view, everyone has the freedom to express how they want to express it. The problem I have is when people try and force their reinvention of the manga on the fandom. There's a lot of toxicity, I've seen a lot of hate aimed at poor Furuya, at Miyuki (that latter I've experienced directly)...I even saw an expletive filled rant aimed at Oota once, which is mad because he's a very unassuming teacher and I can't imagine how anyone could hate him enough to do something like that.
Just a note to add that Yona 38 is apparently due out in May.
I got the latest volumes of Daiya manga to be released (act 2 29 and 30) and a handful of Horimiya volumes.
Vol 30 has Mei on the front and is the start of the current game so pretty close to up to date. I won't buy any more volumes until I know what happens in this game now.Spoiler3 innings to go I think...they're either at the bottom of the sixth or top of the seventh.
Oh boy. *facepalm* That scene.
And the biggest thing that got me is thatSpoilerthere is essentially that worse scene where Koushuu refuses to catch for Eijun in front of everyone - which is refusing a senpai, which is rude - but you won't see any of the same people criticising that.
They live in their own world which is a selective reading of the manga. And honestly, I wouldn't mind that if they were not actively hostile and downright spiteful to fans of other characters. Furuya fans tend to get it worst. And bad translations of scenes don't help. There was a literal uprising in the fandom when CR subtitled one of Furuya's lines as 'you can still compete with me' even though the line is categorically and unquestionably 'we can still compete with each other'.
I genuinely can't stand the Eijun portion of the fandom because so many of them subscribe to this nonsense that everyone is always picking on Eijun, which is fundamentally ridiculous, and ignores all the times Eijun is griping about other players/flat out rude/genuinely thoughtless. There was a very recent example of this in a scene you won't have read, so I won't go into details, but it was very frustrating...and of cours all the Eijun fans were like, aww, poor Eijun...when he was the cause of the problem.
So I am still reading the Horimiya manga. I love it so much more than the anime, even though some of the scenes in the anime are great. There's so much missing and some of it is truly awesome. I still don't want him to.Spoilercut his hair though. That will take further time to adjust to xD.
I've also read properly to the end of Yona 34. I have the broad strokes of what happens in 35, I remembered it when I got to the end of 34. But now I've read the full flashback properly.
I'm re-reading Sailor Moon right now :) or actually, I'm past the point where I stopped reading it earlier. I adore the art, it's so inspiring.
I should read book 3 of A Sign Of Affection, but it's SUCH a fuzzy feeling read, I don't want to read it too fast ;A;
Annnd on TBHK - 4 days left until next chapter. can. not. wait!!!
And my predictions for this Daiya chapter were right. So now I have an *idea* how things might continue. We'll see.
I had an email this morning from my Mum's friend and former English student in Japan, who helped me out a lot when I was over there doing fieldwork. He apparently found a volume of manga relating to my study and is sending it to me. So I guess I'll be reading that at some point :)
I also had a chance to see the first volume of smaller size Sailor Moon Eternal edition (Now called the Naoko Takeuchi collection) The NT editions are about the same size as the original Kodansha realizes but at least twice as thick. It looked like the same about of chapters are in included in the NT editions as the Eternal version. Most disappointing to me was the fact that the color pages that were restored for Eternal are gone again. :( Why make such a big deal out of restoring them in one release if the publisher is just going to take them away in the next?
Ponyfan
I still need to read Yona 35. 36 will be released in early June in the US.
Hopefully my life will settle down soon and I'll have time to read.
Ponyfan
Oh what!! I was excited when I started reading your post since the one thing giving me pause about buying the Eternal editions has been the size (I LOVE the bigger size but they would take up more space), so the thought of that edition in a smaller size was nice... but no colour pages?!? Surely those are one of the main draws of the Eternal edition? Gah.
I soooo behind Yona that I may need re read as refresher...
Sooo many mangas/ novels to read just enough hours in day :b

I've doubled and (tripled) checked the NT edition of Etenral just to be sure that wasn't overlooking any color pages and only the very first page of the book is in color. :( All the rest of the pages have returned to black and white. There's also a Barnes and Noble exclusive edition but it just has a small pull out poster inside.
(Small voice in)
I've found official douchinjis by the original author and I've been binging them repeatedly even if most of them are not translated. For some, I can guess the context but for others I REALLY wish I knew even a little Japanese to get the context, as the dialogue suggests heavy feelings and dangit I need more heart-to-heart with this couple!
Just the sheer fact sensei is continuing the series after so long seriously makes my heart glow :lovey: This was one of the very first manga I ever bought, the first in the yaoi genre, and was my gateway to it. After so many years, to find out there was a series continuing and there were even official doushins? I seriously cannot explain the pure joy radiating from my heart at it!!
It's not really that much of a detail spoiler, honestly xD I wouldn't do that to you.
Wow, that's a looong way behind on the Daiya front. I don't understand how they can be so up to the minute with Yona and other series but that one is so far behind. Literally YEARS behind. Not on the right series, even, since it's still stuck on Act I.
The new Daiya manga chapter this week was a bit fateful. I won't spoiler it at all but yeah. Some nice quotes to take out of it.
I'm on vol 6 of Yuukoku no Moriarty now. I'm not a massive fan of this arc and wasn't in the anime but it's fine. Albert is still creepy. I swear he's more creepy in the manga than the anime somehow.
I'm on volume 8 of Yuukoku no Moriarty. Just finished the Whitechapel arc. Albert really had nothing to do this arc. He was probably sitting back in London drinking wine while his brothers and companions ran riot (literally).SpoilerAnother chapter, another scene in which Louis and Will use murder to demonstrate their fraternal bond, this time by a well-timed weapon swap. Also, this Louis is still creepy in a good way:

.
The whole arc and especially that scene is cut kind of short in the anime and they don't do the weapon swap, which is sad. Why shouldn't Louis get Will's cane?? He looks good with it too o.O.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
It's the second brotherly bond moment that the anime has skipped out, which makes it look so much more like Will is just using Louis (which is not the case at all, Louis's life is probably the only one - including his own - that Will doesn't see as a pawn in his puppet show).
Also, the moment in the anime for that picture above is so much less sinister.
There was a very satisfying moment in this week's Daiya chapter, for anyone who suffered through the last summer final. (No the game isn't over, no it didn't change the score).SpoilerEijun/Seidou got Shirakawa out. :D
SpoilerNope. I guess it's not such a trauma inside of him anymore, since overcoming the yips.
It was the first time they faced each other since the last summer final.
I have had to put reading and collecting on ice for a bit because of RL being a bit too busy, and packing up to move. But I got volume 5 of A Sign Of Affection in the mail just the other day ^^ so excited to read it later :D
Speaking of Daiya, I'm feeling kind of up and down about the manga right now.
I will say this mind you.SpoilerWe had a lovely array of Zono-faces in this week's chapter. I love me a good Zono face. ;)
Also:SpoilerThe game hasn't ended yet. Last week was anevil evil cliffhangerbreak.
Neither of the above are proper plot spoilers.
The following includes one, however, so read at own risk.SpoilerIt was so interesting seeing Mukai watching this game this chapter. It's been a LONG time since the game between Seidou and Teitou, and his observations about Toujou, how Toujou could hit his pitch, and how he shouldn't give up on being a pitcher. My memory is a bit fuzzy but I'm sure there was a comparison between Mukai the ace who went to Koushien already and Toujou who had to shift to outfield...and Mukai having the thought about Toujou giving up the pitcher slot to 'outsiders' (not from Tokyo).
So Toujou is now up to bat. Since the author went to the trouble of referencing that ancient rivalry, I really hope he can hit the ball.
On Daiya...
There's just one thing that sticks in my head (this is a proper spoiler, be warned)SpoilerWhen Eijun came off the mound after the eighth, he dropped the water bottle Koushuu gave him as though his fingers were messed up. Remembering Nori in the Yakushi game, I worry a bit about this. I can't see another option for the game except for Eijun to hold down the batters, because the game ought to centre on his performance vs the previous game vs Inajitsu...but...I never know with this mangaka.
This week is a manga break so there's still no new Daiya progress to report anyway. On the previous spoiler...SpoilerThey still have Furuya in the game so he could go back to the mound, but Nori is out, so there really isn't another option. If Furuya is switched back in, the stupid section of Eijun's fandom are going to implode the internet with complaining. I also think it should be on Eijun. I *want* it to be Nori...but...
I suppose there's Toujou. At a push.
I also hope Eijun can hold down this inning. I suspect he's going to have a hard time vs Mei.
here is one shelf:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
(https://postimg.cc/rdGZGhFv)
Now you have to imagine 3 more shelves just like that. and yes, it's double stacked and shelved.
Well...SpoilerHe did manage to hold down Shirakawa, and Yamaoka, and so he should be able to manage Mei, if his hand is ok.
This is entirely my theorising but to ratchet up the tension, I can see Mei getting on base and some last minute fielding scramble to prevent a score...
There's also Itsuki, who I don't want to ignore.
It frustrates me that for so many of the series we have, the last volume didn't get translated, or the printing gets cancelled... so they don't exist in English. So the collection will be forever incomplete...
I've only flicked through yona 36 and 37, so I have the broad strokes but not all the details.
Last week was yet another week off with Daiya, I am guessing that the writer may be under a lot of stress and needing more time - or he might just want a holiday.
I have a feeling that the next chapter may be pivotal to the whole story.

Why do I have the feeling that when the Daiya manga starts again there might suddenly be a rainstorm or something else to prolong the story even further? I think it's officially been a year now since the game started?
I'm a Koi, Now I'm in Love 3 was released. I need to pick that one up. I also need to move some of the books on my manga shelf around to make room for the new titles.
Ponyfan
Oh, you mentioned that rainstorm tongue in cheek, but you know, delaying tactics are brutal.SpoilerLast week's chapter was entirely a time out, with a messenger sent from the bench. THE WHOLE CHAPTER HAD NO GAME ACTION WHATSOEVER. Bear in mind that was the first chapter after a 2 week break and a cliffhanger. GRRR! xD.
Not to be repetitive, but again with Daiya.
Real spoilers within.SpoilerI'm currently trying to work out whetherSpoilerthe game just ended or not. I know that should be obvious, but the way the pitches are, I'm really not 100% at the moment. Sigh.
But...SpoilerMei was definitely out at home plate.
Also...SpoilerReading it over, I think it ended...but I guess we'll see next week if it did. The umpire certainly hasn't called it yet, but it does look very final and general conversation in the fandom seems to be that it's done and over with.
Daiya:
Uberspoilers in this tagSpoilerThe game didn't end with Mei being out, but if the game did end,Spoileryes, Seidou won.
The general view in the fandom is that it's the end and the game is done. I think so too, rereading it multiple times, but the umpire has not called it yet and I'm so wary because this mangaka is such a naughty person when it comes to putting in cliffhangers.
Basically what happened was...SpoilerThe last chapter ended with Furuya's bullet throw to Miyuki, which he caught in time to get Mei out. Mei acknowledged the back home throw was so good that he couldn't really complain about it. Itsuki was on first base and moved up to second during this time. The third batter, Jinguuji, came up to the plate. Eijun did some thinking about how he wanted to step up to the next level too, beyond this game. Miyuki's like, let's go there, together then. And then it looks like he strikes the guy out. I never take it for granted until the umpire calls it.
Something I can also say outside of spoilers, but it amuses me how some teams have 'themes' in the names of the characters. Inajitsu is a good example. Shirakawa is a place in Kyoto. Jinguuji is in Osaka. Tadano (Itsuki) is in Fukushima. Yabe is also a place name I think. I'm not sure Narumiya is a place name, but a Miya is a shrine, and so, technically, is a 'jinguu'. Yamaoka probably isn't a place name specifically, but the name is made up of 'mountain' and 'hill', which is also sort of in the theme. It just amuses me.
I should be checking out whether Ugumori's characters have names relating to the sengoku or Nobunaga, since in their game against Inajitsu and I think against Seidou, they were throwing out Nobunaga quotes and comparing their games to Nobunaga's battle victories...
Haikyuu does this too iirc. I certainly know that Ushiwaka is a not so subtle nod to Yoshitsune, not least because there's a comment about his teammate being 'Benkei', Yoshitsune's right hand man.
There's probably quite a lot of Haikyuu manga, even if it's not quite as old/long as Daiya. They've managed to squeeze multiple anime series out of it, albeit I think season 1 and season 3 are only about 10 episodes each.
The availability might be a factor, which may also relate to timing since Daiya began in 2006 and if they were slow on the uptake in translating it it would've left them a lot of work to do. Haikyuu anime also has a dub version which helps increase people's attention. I agree that Daiya is better than Haikyuu overall, but I think the other thing is that Haikyuu is fairly gentle with no massive disasters, setbacks or emotionally destructive incidents. The characters are well-written but they don't get forced into the situations the Daiya ones do, becauseandSpoilerunlike Daiya, the third years don't have to retire from the team at the same pointSpoilerIt follows a much more predictable line to get Karasuno to where they want to be.
The other thing about Daiya is thatSpoilerit focuses on the powerhouse school, which isn't actually that common as far as I can see. The underdog narrative is more common (eg Karasuno as fallen champions, crows that don't fly, etc). I don't know whether that aspect resonates at all in the West more than in the East. I can't personally see why because Daiya is full of underdogs, both at Seidou and in opposition, but it's hard to know for sure.
I think it mostly comes down to the fact Haikyuu is gentler, though. It's an easy to watch/read sports series with good characters that probably isn't going to make you cry. Whereas frankly, it would be pretty weird to read/watch Daiya and not cry.
Vol 39 of Yona has Soo Won on the front, looking either startled or perturbed. Knowing roughly where 38 left things, this is a little concerning to me. I do think Yona is working towards a big finale but I worry about that finale quite a lot.
So, some Daiya news I just found online...
Daiya is to continue at least until the end of the Teitou and Ugumori game. (Ugumori better win). But Terajima sensei needs a break, which I think everyone had already assumed. He wants to at least finish that, I think it's important that he does as well, because you know, completion.
But the article is quite interesting. I wonder how that kind of chapter distribution might affect availability outside of Japan...we'll see what happens. It will obviously not be right away, but I can 100% understand that Jump's scheduling is not condusive to good health. He pretty much broke down after Act I so this was predictable and he needs to make sure he is ok before trying to go on.

Oh yes.SpoilerDon't get me started on Yona's dream. It's been freaking me out ever since the volume was released. Bear in mind she had a sort of dream-predict at the start, didn't she? About having to flee the castle...and thinking of her mother, too :/
IIRCSpoilerHak was alive in v.38 or 39. I haven't read any of these properly yet, but I always check to see everyone's still around...
It's funny you say that about reading, Ponyfan. I got down to reading Yona 36 and 37 finally, and forgot I hadn't read 36 so I first picked up 37 and then went, huh, what is going on here? XD But I am fine now. I've got 38 and 39 on my unit here, ready to be read next.
Spoiler about the previous spoiler tag....SpoilerConfirm Hak is definitely alive.
New Yona on 20 Jan so I'll order that and 32 of Daiya Act II, which may or may not be the last official volume of Act 2, I am not sure if there will be another *sob*. I want to reread Act II but I'm sort of waiting for the anime to catch up since I'm lazy and cba to grab all my volumes. I did reread half of it last year but got distracted.

Yona 40 was released today in Japan.
The cover...
Yeah, the last volume is worthwhile given it has stuff in it not in the anime, or only in the OVA anime episodes which haven't been formally released outside Japan.
I think it is Meinyan, yes.
Also,SpoilerI know Yona's carrying her bow, but it looks like a tennis racket if you just glance at it, LOL :)
I got vol 32 of Act II and vol 40 of Yona yesterday. There will definitely be another volume at least before Act II volumes end because this one is still in the game.
Yona...Ponyfan, one massive Yona spoiler for you here if you dare to read it...SpoilerAt close of book 40, everyone still *seems* to be alive. Woot.
The Way of the Househusband 9
"filled up already" ha! they do not understand
I forgot to mention in my other post that Yona 39 and 40 now have release dates in the US for August and December. I don't see a release date for anything beyond December yet for future volumes.
Daiya 42 releases in ebook format next week. That gives me hope that 47 might come out before the end of the year.
Ponyfan
That reminds me that I need to check see whether the next (last?) volume of act II is out/due to be out soon. I am not sure if it will be one or two more volumes to complete the run. Still hoping for anime.
Aaand yes, it is out. I think it might be the last volume, judging by the cover.
Yona 41 is out in May in Japan. Unless something comes up sooner, I might wait till then to get Act II vol 33.
I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but I sort of recently picked up & started reading Vanitas. I like it so far :)
I'm also still waiting for my copy of A Sign of Affection 6. I preordered it on amazon, but it's still sold out - I guess they had too many preorders. It hasn't been sent yet ;A; I see you got yours, Ponyfan :)
I'm due a rearrange, too. ^^'
I preordered the Nendoroids for Therapy Game, and I'm so sad to see Vol.3 of Therapy Game: Restart isn't out until next year!!
I still wonder what is happening to Drug and Drop, the sequel to Legal Drug by CLAMP. I have the original Tokyopop volumes, the Dark Horse Omnibus Edition and Vol.1 and 2 of the sequel, where is the rest??

The series has been on hiatus since 2013; CLAMP have kind of a habit (https://anime.astronerdboy.com/2014/06/clamp-hiatus-masters.html) of putting stuff on long hiatuses unfortunately :(
I generally don't read manga, but for some reason I thought I ought to read the Nausicaa manga as they're at the library. I used to watch the movie all the time and wanted more to the story after being reminded of it by Shuna's Journey , which was AMAZING. Seriously, the whole thing is full color paintings basically and it's only been recently translated. I adore fairy tale retellings and explorations of folklore, so Shuna's Journey (which is also by Myazaki!) was so enjoyable. Anyway, I was (predictably) completely blown away by Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and I don't know why it took me so long to read it. It's right up there with Lord of the Rings on the greatest fantasy/stories of all time list for me.
my Sign of Affection 6 finally came! It took sooo long ;A;
I have been too busy lately to read and enjoy it, so I'm saving it for vacation in 2 weeks.
Still can't order Daiya 34 :(
I preordered the Nendoroids for Therapy Game, and I'm so sad to see Vol.3 of Therapy Game: Restart isn't out until next year!!
I still wonder what is happening to Drug and Drop, the sequel to Legal Drug by CLAMP. I have the original Tokyopop volumes, the Dark Horse Omnibus Edition and Vol.1 and 2 of the sequel, where is the rest??
The series has been on hiatus since 2013; CLAMP have kind of a habit (https://anime.astronerdboy.com/2014/06/clamp-hiatus-masters.html) of putting stuff on long hiatuses unfortunately :(
Woah! That's just painstaklingly long! :-O I think I've waited a couple of years on some... but never that long. :-/
So, both of my manga volumes (Yona 41 and Daiya A2 34) arrived this morning.
On the Yona front,Spoilereveryone seems to be still alive, I think...
On the Daiya front, I understand why this volume sold out so quick and has been so hard to get, as it has some extra material that wasn't included in the manga magazine run.
On Ugumori and Teitou - there's a side note saying that Terajima intends to write this as a 'gaiden' or outside story at a later date. I imagine it will probably get a volume of its own eventually...maybe.
It also came with a postcard congratulating readers for 'graduating Daiya no Ace manga' xD. The picture is from the final of the Summer Tournament with the two teams lined up after the game.
Spoilers under cut for the ending of Daiya.SpoilerThe manga gives the results for round 1 and round 2 of Koushien, both of which Seidou won. Furuya pitched the first round, Kawakami and Eijun the second round.
There are then several blank pages, followed by a note from Terajima about what he originally intended when he set out to write Daiya 16 years ago.SpoilerHe basically says that the game that inspired him was one which ran to fifteen innings and was ultimately settled as a draw - but that with the passage of time so much has changed in high school baseball that that kind of game would no longer be possible. He also mentions how the characters have grown beyond his original expectations and it would be hard to force them into that kind of a template given who they are now.
I think the implication is that he intended Seidou to reach a final and split the honours with Komadai, but with the changes that have happened over the last 16 years, that's no longer possible.
So I think we can read from that - and from the other details peppered into the epilogue, that Seidou at the very least made the top four, and probably the final. The fact that none of them seem particularly downcast in the epilogue makes me think that maybe they did win it after all. Who knows...
There is also a chapter, 308.5, which is a proper aftermath to the game, and which includes more detail of them in the second round of Koushien. This wasn't included in the magazine run I don't think.SpoilerWhile it's a small detail, in the bigger picture, I'm gratified to discover from this that Mochi has had multiple offers from good universities, and also that Ochiai and company tell him that if Seidou finish in the top four at Koushien, there's a good chance he'll get a scholarship to one of them.
Then there is a further small epilogue set in the autumn (Sept/early Oct).
Kanemaru is the new captain!
More specific detail under the next spoilerSpoilerThe epilogue begins with Eijun and Furuya asking Miyuki how it felt to be selected for the Japanese under 18s team. It seems like Furuya and Eijun were also selected for the Tokyo Senbatsu competition as that is now in autumn. It's implied that Miyuki is expected to be pro selected but this hasn't happened yet.
Eijun asks Miyuki for a proper contest, batter vs pitcher, at full strength, and various of the other members (both retired third years and current team) get involved to field and so on for this contest.
It ends with Eijun at the mound and Miyuki - with a wooden bat - ready to hit. Eijun remembers his meeting with Miyuki and how it has changed his entire outlook. It ends with Eijun basically thinking that the pitch he's about to throw is his parting gift to Miyuki, and Miyuki's response is that he'll be waiting for him to follow (to the pro league).
Here endeth Daiya.
I did feel like the end was a bit abrupt in the manga, so he clearly also wrote something to just tie this off and make it make more sense.
But I feel more now that this probably is the end of Daiya.
And it is time they finished animating it -.-
Because I still want to seeSpoilerthe scene between Miyuki and Mei at the end of the match animated
@Ponyfan - I might send you a PM so as to spare the whole forum all my thoughtbabblings about Daiya xD.
But I agree thatSpoilerKanemaru is quite logical. I had thought maybe Haruichi. They tend not to make pitchers Captain, Ugumori aside, so I didn't expect it to be Eijun.
Stumbled onto some yona spoilers today...SpoilerThey're not especially good...and yet I am fascinated *lol*
Does the Daiya manga have more of Eijun's thoughts than the anime? I'm reading a fanfiction story where Koushuu is actually reading the manga to learn more about Eijun and I think the writer of the story is actually quoting parts of the manga. In the scene where Miyuki and Eijun face off against Azuma, there a line that sounds like Eijun is speaking that says "At that very moment, I think I opened a door to a new world."

ooooo I love artbooks. I think we have a Fruits Basket one somewhere...

:D
I just wish it was a bit bigger, it's pretty much the same size as an average manga volume. Still looks great though :lovey:
Bought an artbook yesterday, Fruits Basket Complete Anime Natsuki Takaya Illustrations :) Still haven't watched the new anime (someday!!) but I couldn't resist this, it looks so pretty from what I've seen so far! Looking forward to sitting down and giving this a proper look-through :lovey:
I literally just read the latest chapter of Yona. Oh boy.
And yet there's still so many big questions.

I have a Saiyuuki one somewhere. It has my absolute favourite picture from the series in it. I love it because it reflects a really key plot moment, but also because it's coloured, and HAKKAI's EYES ARE CORRECT - one green and one gold. A tiny tiny plot-significant detail that, despite how well done it was, the Zeroin anime failed to observe.
I am up to date with Yona.
I still have genuinely no idea where she's heading with this, even though we're definitely in the end game now.
the latest issue of Spy x Family has arrived in the house but I haven't had a chance to read it
I haven't checked up on the new Yona chapter yet. It's been a stressful month, and I think I need to be more Zen (zeno?) before I read it, given that each month ups the drama.
