Meet Baby Munchy! Built from Newborn Toppy, I had a lot of fun working on her; Munchy is one of those ponies I'd love to own if I was a serious collector with money to spare. I realized this food truck lunch box would be a perfect setpiece, wouldn't you agree?

Customs / Lady Lemonade <3
« on: March 22, 2022, 01:44:41 PM »
I'll be selling this darling at a local fair in April. Her name is a little to the point, but she just seems like such a gentlewoman. Like a fancy Victorian lady having a picnic. She is quite deserving of the Lady title!

She's partially inspired by another interest I have: making violet syrup from wild violets harvested from parks and yards and such. The liquid is a natural ph indicator-- it's deep blue at neutral levels, but when you expose it to acid, it turns purple and then deep pink. Adding it to a glass of lemonade is fun at small parties.

Pony Corral / I am here to document SHENANIGANS. (No, not the g3 pony.)
« on: January 24, 2022, 08:12:27 AM »
I'm crossposting this from MLPTP to get more exposure, so you might feel some deja vu.

I mean I'm here for DRAMA. Specifically, an incident that happened last year that piqued my interest and made me laugh a lot.

I'd like to compile some sort of piece about the eBay Rapunzel incident from 2021. You know, the eBay listing that fluctuated between $10,000-$20,000 and had a dramatic description about a child proudly declaring that this garage sale plaything with a clearly damaged mane would pay for a college tuition (in, may I add, THIS economy). I've also been told that the seller responded poorly to inquiries about the price, and made some declarations about how they, as the sole seller online at the moment, controlled the market.

Come on, man. I got a B- in high school economics, and even I see the holes in that.

So... what am I looking for?

Well, sources! I'd like to either write an article or produce a YouTube video discussing the incident, and journalistic integrity is important to me. If you have any of the following, and would like to help in this project, I would be most obliged:

Screenshots of the eBay listing during its active time.
Screenshots of any relevant online correspondence with the seller. Don't worry-- you can redact your screen name or request that I not include it.
Links or screenshots of online discussion of the events during or near the time stuff went down.
idk, whatever you think is relevant.

If at all possible, please include a date with your evidence (gosh, that sounds serious for a funny pony story). I'm trying to put together a timeline of events. There's a single archive.org snapshot of the webpage from a European user on April 22nd (kudos to the savy user who thought to document it!), when the price was $20,000, but no description is available. But I also have screenshots and discussion from the previous day where the price is to $10,000, and a great deal of discourse has already gone down.

WHY is this important to me?

I dunno. Niche drama is fun! I found the whole situation entertaining, and I feel like if the story is shared with those who haven't heard of it or know nothing about the collecting community, it will be entertaining to them. I just love a good story, and wacky stories about treasured toys and hobbyists are a particular favorite of mine. Like, ask me about the 1999 Furby Scare sometime. It involves the Pentagon and NASA.

Customs / Name's the Same-- What do I do?!
« on: January 23, 2022, 07:08:52 AM »
I've been working on a beautiful konpeito themed Twice as Fancy pegasus all month. Here's an earlier WIP picture.

I came up with her name almost as quickly as her theme: Cosmic Candy. Y'know, because she's based on sugar stars? But just today, I decided to go through some back pages of Customs here on the forum for inspiration, and discovered I may have taken a bit more inspiration than originally thought. ChocolateStarfire posted her own (frankly gorgeous) Cosmic Candy just this past June!

What's an artist to do! Our ponies are distinct creations to be sure, but would it be a better gesture to rename my own pony for more clarity? I suppose Sugar Stars is a suitable substitute, especially since my base pony is Starshine... What would you do in this situation?

Customs / Making a draft horse-- Yoke?
« on: December 13, 2021, 02:58:24 PM »
I'm currently making a lebkuchen pony as a sort of brother to Gingerbread, based off my childhood briefly living in Bavaria. While I don't think I have the patience to pull off the detailed tack that you can see horses decked out in over there, I do want to make a yoke around his neck, both for detail and to cover up a little discoloration. Do you know of any customs that have used this, and what methods they used for construction? I imagine someone out there must have tried it out for Big Macintosh or something, even though I'm working in g1. I'd love to see examples and reccs.

Pony Corral / Tail Swapping-- Making it Clean
« on: December 06, 2021, 02:35:30 PM »
Since I collect for the purpose of customizing, all G1 ponies who enter my home get their internal metal parts removed so that they can be sufficiently cleaned. This means that the tail washer comes out, and the metal clamp gets pried off and replaced with a zip-tie.
However, I can never get the zip-tie as tight as the clamp, and as a result the tail is always a little loosely held together and prone to falling apart. Am I not using small enough ties? Or is there something I'm missing? I'd like to hear what you have to say on the matter, and if you think it's worth the effort.

Pony Corral / How do YOU sunfade?
« on: August 31, 2021, 09:12:41 AM »
More specifically, what sort of container do you use? I’ve tried my hand at sun fading ponies in hydrogen peroxide with mixed results. I tend to use glass containers with translucent latched tops. And that’s another thing: do you close the container? My first sunfading attempt was in college, and the best area I had to leave it in was frequented by a small family of feral cats. I didn’t want them to try and drink the liquid, so I made sure it was covered.

Also, because I was in college with limited materials, I had the head stuck in a small jam jar. I think it was a cool mad scientist look. My room mate just said it reminded her of a gross copypasta she’d read. 🤢

Pony Corral / Share a Laugh?
« on: July 07, 2021, 09:36:00 AM »
I made this image after a lengthy childhood pony ID session with a bud on Discord. Skywishes' smug aura just reminded me of the Iron Man meme. I dunno, you guys got any memes or running jokes about pony collecting?

I loved seeing all the eBay Rapunzel jokes during that mess, and my friend and her wife tell me they still reference a post I made with this image every time they see two of something significant. TWO Dads!

Pony Corral / A Sad Day- A Vacant Townhouse
« on: June 25, 2021, 06:34:06 PM »
I was in a waiting room passing the time today, getting tired of binging the archive of the webcomic I was on and decided to binge another old favorite, Kimono's Townhouse. It's been a while since the images have worked, so I normally use the Wayback machine to view it, but I visited the site anyway...

Alas! Poor KT. It's been years since the site updated, but it's still sad to see it go. I first encountered the comic when I was around 10, and it was one of my first forays into Geek Culture. It really laid the groundwork for my future as a DragonCon junkie and fan of miniatures.

For the less familiar, KT's homepage describes the comic as such:
Quote
Kimono’s Townhouse is a comic about two roommates who are polar opposites. One is a cultured neat–freak who enjoys art and classic literature. The other is a hyperactive geek who loves comics, action figures and sugar. They happen to be My Little Ponies.
It's a good healthy mix of character-based humor, pop culture, and G3 memories. Maybe you'd like to revisit the archived site too? Or just open up a discussion about it. I'd love to hear about others' experiences with the comic, as I was a pretty young fan when I first came across it.

Customs / Lady Leafy: A Cow-mission for SunPony!
« on: June 05, 2021, 08:36:38 AM »
A few weeks ago, I got a message from SunPony regarding my Strawberry Cow custom. She had a bait Sundance coming in the mail, and wanted to know if I could transform her in a similar way. I'm always happy to get a new project, so I happily agreed!

I made sure to take a comparison photo with Strawberry. This Sundance had some ink stains, but was still so bright white! Strawberry was yellowed from the day I got her. I almost felt bad that I'd be painting over most of it.

The agreement was that I'd be making a mom for pony friend Baby Leafy. Rather than just making an adult Leafy, I wanted to create a cow that was distinct from her child, but still looked like family. I was inspired by the color pattern of Jersey cattle as well as the floofy fur and long horns of highland cows. So with a bit of work, paint, and apoxie sculpt, I am able to present: Lady Leafy!

I'm very happy with how she came out. Here's a photo of her hanging out with the other animals before I shipped her out to her new home.

...Huh? You thought that was an acronym? Greatest of all Time? Nah, no bragging here. I was commissioned recently to make another cow pony, and as practice I decided to give some love to a badly stained Baby Moondancer bait I’ve had for a bit. Her goat horns are cast from a mold of her unicorn horn— not the original horn, but only because I momentarily lost it and figured my workstation was messy enough that making a second horn would take less time than finding it 😅

I thought about the name Cocoa at first, but I think I’ll call her Coffee Bean, after the old story about how the bean’s effects were first discovered by a goat herder.

Pony Corral / Child Crimes Against Ponies!
« on: April 13, 2021, 08:27:42 AM »
Ah, children. Innocent? Or dangerous criminals? I think we’ve all had at least one instance of not treating our toys the way Toy Story intended— what’s the worst damage you’ve seen a kid, well-meaning or not, do to a pony?

I have two examples— one well-meaning, one...not. I was born in ‘97, but when I was 9 I discovered G1 and the world of vintage toy collecting. As such, I was ecstatic to discover that a friend of mine had a G1 pony (who I later found was Mommy Sweet Celebrations) that she didn’t really want, and she let me keep it. I’d been gazing at old fan sites and cleaning tips for ages, and now that I finally had a pony in my hands to keep... that I immediately took a sharpie and scrawled “PROPERTY OF [name and initial]” across her belly on the non-display side. I still have her, and though the marker is gone, the message is emblazoned on her side in pink stains.

I’ll have to post the second story a little later— it’s a bit grisly 😵 but what tales of misfortune do you have?

Customs / World's Smallest...Customs?
« on: April 10, 2021, 08:26:09 AM »
We all know the Super Impulse World's Smallest line, right? So small and cute, but a little pricy to buy as custom bait. So I bought the Firefly and Minty set from eBay to do a little experimentation!

Firefly was stripped of a mane and tail and used to make two styles of molds for two styles of pony, Resin and Sculpey. Making the resin mold with the latex mold builder I own is a little tedious, so that one isn't done yet, but I've had success working with my sculpey mold!

Sundance was an initial test of my first mold, and Bowtie is a further refinement. It's not a perfect process; I do need to hand carve the sculpey ponies for refined details. But lined up with Minty, I think they look nice!

I'll post more photos and share progress updates as progress is made! Feel free to ask questions or give advice.

Arts & Crafts Corral / How do YOU promote commissions?
« on: April 05, 2021, 03:10:54 PM »
In the past couple of years, I've been chipping away at the art of toy customs. I started my first custom MLP around December of 2019, and I like to think I've grown a good bit since then. Through this growth, I've also started dipping my toes into the world of Monster High dolls, and have a total of three completed projects in that field.

However, I'm not very experienced in the world of selling art. I've made some social media posts promoting my work and advertising commissions, but I've found it hard to make any sales outside of personal friends.

Pictured: MC Vapor-Ware, commissioned piece. June 2020.

In addition, I have trouble setting prices-- I try to strike a balance between compensating myself fairly for time and materials and setting a price that people will actually, y'know, pay.

Any suggestions from more experienced artists out there?

Pony Corral / Society for Ponies with Non-Indicative Names
« on: March 31, 2021, 11:15:53 AM »
Welcome to SPNN! The thread for listing and discussing as many ponies with unfitting names as possible!

I was mainly inspired by yesterday's Pony of the Day, Red Roses from the Perfume Puff line. Lovely pony, doesn't seem to have any red.

I commented that she probably gets along with G3's Green Apple. She gets away with it a little more for having a green cutie mark, but come on, man.
