Title: Worst/Weirdest/Outrageous Ebay Auctions
Post by: hyenacub on September 19, 2018, 02:14:59 PM
OK so I found this auction of LOT OF 5 VINTAGE HASBRO MY LITTLE PONIES PONY HORSE HAIR ANIMAL DOLLS!  LOL  (It's a group of fakies.)  Not sure if we're allowed to post auctions not our own, but this one is easily findable.  And for the low, low price of 18.50.  (screenshot below as suggested)

And of course there are those who charge ridiculous amounts of money for common ponies, or have very strange titles and/or descriptions, etc..

So that got me wondering, what have been the weirdest, most outrageous ebay (or other) pony auctions you've found?  Because now I am curious.

The title and description crack me up, and it starts at such a low bid!

You can take screenshots and post those, I believe!  ^.^
There was that one from a few months ago of some really common G1s listed for $5k. The lot even included fakies. I'm fairly certain paradise-estate on Tumblr had a screenshot somewhere but I can't find it!
Sometimes the G4 McDonalds are $10 apiece.

5 thousand???  You know, I have got to think that some people are just trolling...no one can think that these guys ar worth that much!

Oh, a screengrab, good idea!  I'll do that, thanks.  c:

the craziest one I came across, (and forgive me because I don't have a link or screen grab) was for a "custom" apple delight with "hand painted and inserted eyes". It went on an on about all the hard work some customizer had done to inset the eyes and how they couldn't believe how pristine the paint job was....It was a lanard fakie with "glass" eyes

I emailed the seller with picture examples of the exact same pony trying to be nice and explain they had made a mistake, they emailed me back saying they KNEW the customizer and that I was just trying to get a deal out of them and that they weren't going to change the price, which incidently I can't remember I want to say it was like 50$ for this fakie that they wanted but I wrote them back and politely reiterated that I was just trying to help and I wasn't even the slightest bit interested in purchasing their item...

I wish them no ill will but I honestly don't know what to think of this person who was  apparently convinced that they had a one of a kind item despite me showing them examples of  mass produced duplicates of the very same item....

Lesson learned...don't try to help delusional people

Found one!
$800 for a ComicCon exclusive with some sort of rating by a system that pony collectors don't use? It better be a 10 if you're charging this much for it. It goes for around $50 MiB.

Eh, I mean if shipping is $4... that is <$3 per pony. That's not really in the realm of outrageous at all.

However, (I don't feel like screen capping)...
The person who is selling "Vintage My Little Pony Colombia 80's BOOTLEG from Colombia VERY RARE" for $500
(Just a common fakie)... that person is being pretty deliberate.

10 piece lot of MLP G4 figurines, loaded with PVC plastic at the low, low price of $2,468.94! (plus $5.52 shipping)

Well nuts, and I missed it!

Yikes!  It seems like they got the item as it is, with the plastic case, and thinks the 9.0 means something...when it's probably  store code or something LOL

I suppose if fakies are your thing, and you're willing to buy them for that.  But the fact that he claims them to be Hasbro MLP....

PLus the wording is hilarious XD  The "Columbian bootleg" is pretty brazen though!

I love seeing crazy auctions LOL

Nah, I don't think that listing is all like "AUTHENTIC MLP!!", it's more like the MLP is being used as a generic search term since its a plastic pony. It's pretty common. Even people who know the names of their fakies will put that in the title, because it will get people to look at their auctions.

It's not a good deal, sure, but it's far from outrageous.

The MLP in the plastic case is using a system that other collectibles (particularly action figures!) use, called grading.  It's a legit thing, but only for collectors who like their figures to be 1000% perfect from the factory.  Those of us who like to de-box and brush/style hair would cause those kinds of collectors to clutch their chests and have a heart attack :)
Title: Re: Worst/Weirdest/Outrageous Ebay Auctions

Grading is common for collectibles, but more prevalent with trading cards and comics.  That's the first MLP item I've seen graded.  A 9 is actually pretty good; 10's are not guaranteed even for absolutely pristine pack fresh cards (as an example), because it also accounts for things like centring and print quality.  It's a dubious investment of effort though when your target market of collectors don't really care about the pristine-ness of the outer packaging...

I've seen a few other listings graded (MiB G3 was rated an 8), but I'm not sure if it was from this one user. They're certainly overpriced when they do come up, which makes me think it probably is all from this one person.
I like that in this instance, you can't even see the pony inside, nor can you open the case to get to it. Although I suppose you could just grade the box...

I browse ebay every now and then to see if there's anything I'm interested in that's both in good condition and actually affordable (the shipping usually is what kills it), and so many times I see G4 blindbag lots (or G4's in general) listed with the word "vintage" in the title, or my favourite, some common ponies (any gen) that look like they've been bathed in old grease and dragged behind a car on a rope listed for insane prices for the condition they're in.

I still haven't found anything I'd actually consider buying from there, yet.

The one that springs to mind was the tiny pinkie pie notebook....

I think sellers often don't realise that mlp as a term does not apply to all plastic coloured ponies and so use it as a catchall. It is offensive when the price is obscene though...it implies we are all more money than sense.

I gave seen a lot of really wrecked common g1 for $30+ because apparently it can't be helped that they have no mane or tail or symbol if its 30 years old. ( A lot of ponies in my cupboard beg to differ...)

I have seen grading used on quality on things too. But it isn't a system we use among ourselves, so the comment is valid. Although maybe when ponies are seen as proper antique toys that may change...I don’t suppose it is a huge issue to do it.

The seller must have relisted that - the first title I saw said it was a prototype.

Anyway, another funny one I've seen was a listing for a Northstar with a haircut. The listing said "She is bald and fuzzy but she's not letting that get in her way! Ready for a new adventure!" In all caps.

Sometimes things like that make me wonder if it's a typo for 49.99

There's some wrapping paper listed at $1,200, but I assume it's a typo for $12

I believe they did adjust it later to be a bit more fair, but it wasn't $49, so it wasn't a typo. Maybe wishful thinking.

So many ponies fell under their paintbrush.  Perfectly nice ponies.  (I know because at the time you could search a buyer's past bought auctions, and also this customizer never rerooted but instead used a pony's pre-existing hair.  So I'd be like, "Oh, mmhm, that one was Baby Brother Sweet Celebrations . . . rest in peace.")

The grading system, I think, is silly. I keep my ponies in their packaging when I want them not because I like the packaging all that much, but because it keeps the contents nice. I've always thought of the grading system as a way to pinch more money out of collectors to inflate the "niceness" on the level of selling a car.

If someone wants to pay $800 for a pony graded a "90" on eBay then more power to them, but a thing graded as a "90" really isn't any more different then any other NIB of the same thing that looks just as well in the package that hasn't been touched by professional hustlers. And probably $730 cheaper from someone who just fell out of love with it.

My idea of "worst/outrageous" is different than others when it comes to most collecting, though. Something that costs more than an entire year's worth of payments of my brand-new, fully loaded car with a turbo engine and a warming steering wheel is ridiculous to me.

This is the most expensive pony on eBay right now. As far as I am concerned, the person in Greece can keep it and I will play with my $15 lot of fairly mint finds to replace the G1s that I lost.

With there being 24 watchers, it shows me that at least 20 people want it.

Again, this is all just me. That doesn't mean that someone just wants it. I have no kermiffins about it because it would be awesome to have a $5000 pony, but I am not spending that 5K to say I have it. It's more bragging rights in terms of monetary value, in my opinion, which that silly grading system feeds into and creates one deep racket to separate collectors from their money. Further, I think most of the G1 baby ponies look doofy (especially beddy-bye eyes- they look so unsettling ESPECIALLY when an eye is broken, and could launch a metric ton of creepypastas with the right people) so it justifies never dropping $5000 on this specific one.

Dear skies, the poor thing.  It looks like it was rolled in sand. What's with the random cheek circle, and why would you outline in black of all things?  T__T  Granted there aren't many customs I like the look of (most of the modern ones seem to always suffer from overstuffed tail or rapunzel length hair or both) but this is just ugly.

I don't remember this person specifically but I remember a lot of perfectly good ponies getting turned into...erm...well, let's just say I preferred them as they were. But G1 were more plentiful then so nobody really kicked up a big fuss about it.

The price of Nirvana ponies is always mysterious to me. I know there are ponies in that category which have changed hands for thousands of dollars. I guess if it makes you happy and you have the money, then that's up to you. But I find it hard to reason out one plastic pony being worth that much money, even OOAK.

That said, I don't really let ebay auctions for Nirvana ponies surprise me. If it were a regular G1 baby for $5000 then it might be worth discussing, but I have seen other Greek babies sell for four figure sums. I don't pretend to know which Greek ponies are expensive and which are not these days, but although I personally think it crazy, its still within the range of what Nirvana collectors sometimes pay for ponies. When you see hairless South African ponies selling for $2000 then $5000 greek babies with accessories somehow seem normal...o.O.

...Or maybe not. But its well known that there have been Nirvana ponies which have changed hands for way more than $5000. *shrugs* Nirvana collectors are a different breed.

I wouldn't pay it, it's crazy money, but in context with the market in general, I think $1000 for a regular Peachy is much more outrageous than $5000 for a Nirvana baby.

I think it is.  Probably done with a Sharpie.  I'm sad to think what this pony looks like now. Not because they're particularly rare or valuable but no toy deserves to be deliberately ruined.  At least there's still the option of restoration or a better custom, unlike those ponies that got cut up into plant holders. X__X

Baby Sugarberry, I don't like the uber long hair as much on customs, either.
What really gets me is when they carve out a HUGE hole for the tail, like, half the size of the pony's neck, and it's just... pooping hair.  SO much hair.  Stuffed full so it doesn't even fall properly, just POOF giant fan of hair.  Hard pass.

The sad thing is that's actually one of the less awful customs from that seller (yeah, seller not collector . . . I am pretty sure they didn't collect, but just flipped ponies into customs for the money . . . believe it or not people did buy them, which still blows my mind.)   Because usually she would have filled in the Pikachu cheeks with red or some other bright color, and same with the hooves.  But this pony, being wedding themed, escaped.

I always thought of them as the "OOAK seller" because they always put OOAK in their auction titles, and I didn't know it meant 'one of a kind' so I thought it was a screenname, lol.

The wedding pony there was apparently found at a thrift shop which is how she ended up on eBay recently. I wish I'd saved pics of some of the original (OOAK!) seller's other customs because they were wild.

Not pony related, but I found this by mistake a while back and just checked to see if it was still available. Someone is selling an (empty) diaper box for $100-00. There is another for $350-00. But never fear! This one does still contain 6 never-unfolded nappies. What a relief!

I haven't figured out how to post a screen shot, but a search on eBay for 'diaper box vintage' will bring them, and others, up  :)

Did anyone see this extremely flawed Mimic? I felt so sorry for her... ouch!

That poor mimic! D: I cant believe they said " priced accordingly" after mentioning the giant hole in her neck. How on earth is $78 priced accordingly  -_-  i hope she finds a loving home somewhere

That Mimic....looks dead to me. I mean, Mimic has bright, sparkling, green eyes. And that one's are just...dull and empty. It's really creepy. More creepy than the giant hole in the neck. It's like the zombie ponies got her O.O.

That Sunset Shimmeresque inflatable fakie is disturbingly cute.

Ooo 6 whole nappies, what a deal.

@CloudDreamer : We can't access your picture from that link so it's not displayed. Can you upload it on another server (Imgur or something) instead of Discord ? I'm curious to see your screenshot. ^^

Huh, it shows up for me?  It's a G4 MLP: The Movie Twilight Sparkle and Spike pack, attempting to be sold for 4,000$.

Some of these have got to be typos, and either they have so many auctions they don't notice and/or can't be bothered to change it or...I dunno!

With a few of the older Comic con G3 ponies Hasbro actually had them ‘graded’ and certified and put in the clear plastic cases. Then Hasbro sold them from their website at a $75-$100+ depending on the grade given. So some of those are actually legit auctions, the seller likely paid Hasbro an inflated price and is passing those savings onto us.

Eventually Hasbro realized pony collectors did not care about the grade system and stopped doing it with the ponies.

Oh jeez that Mimic is super spooky. O.o Her eyes really do look dead! It's like you can see the eternal scream in her eyes. I hope her, erm, stoma got fixed up by whoever bought her!

Also, that custom... god. I know people can do whatever they want with their ponies but a small part of me dies inside when I see G1s or G2s customized like that. Any pony really, but those are so much more uncommon now. Especially the part about her most likely being a flipper, that rubs me the wrong way even more.

LOL  Stoma.  Nicely said.

I agree about the flipper.  It's like...damn.  Give a crud about the fans you'r selling to, at least.

Woah, that Mimic!! I can definitely understand why she sold for $78, though; too high for me, but considering Mimic is going for $100-150 anymore (leaning towards the higher end of that), that's a relatively affordable Mimic. Just pop some pony wear on her, or a thick choker, and she'd look great! (I still gotta wonder, why the jagged edges? Was it - rats?! Did rats garrote Mimic?!!?)

I'm super curious to see these "OOAK" customs now, because probably 7 years ago, I bought a 'beater lot' of customs, and a lot of them were just WACKADOO! And many of them had their original hair, even, or the hair was painted! Like, with acrylic!! So now I'm wondering if I inadvertently ended up with some of theirs... xD

That one is explainable.  On some other FB sales stuff I see, sometimes they just put the numbers 1-6 or whatever because they have to put some number orr other in the "price" section.  But they are either taking offers, or each one is a diferent price, or other things other than just a single price.  It took me a while to figure that out though!

Yeah, with Facebook sales post you have to put in a number for your item.  If people have a list of ponies to sell they just put in a random number and list the actual prices in the body of the post.

LOL, that's pretty funny!  "Try to guess the ponies' price . . . go on, try."

That...is weird, all right! lol  I guess it's like a game show.  Guess the price and win a pony on The Pony Is Right!

The one that springs to mind was the tiny pinkie pie notebook....

I remember that one. I actually mailed the seller and asked if it was a typo, or what it was that was so special about it.  They answered it was their daughter that had set the price as she was the one seling, and that they where saving  for a trip to disneyland. They had told the girl it would likely not sell for that price, but she had insisted. ^^

I'm glad there was something rational behind that. . . but still weird, lol
