Title: The REAL Greatest Villain in all of MLP
Post by: Al-1701 on July 01, 2017, 04:39:31 PM
When the question is put forward "Who is the greatest villain in My Little Pony?" the common answers are G1 Tirac or G4 Tirek or Grogar.  However, they have nothing on the true king of MLP villainy.  No.

The greatest villain in the history of My Little Pony is the "bad man" from Ember's Dream.  Yes, the one who wants to shave off the manes of the Rainbow Ponies to make colorful wigs to sell to rich people in...New York City.  He's literally the stuff of nightmares.  As in he is literally in Ember's nightmares.

Not only that, but he gets away with it.  He does shave off their manes and makes his escape with his ill-gotten gains.  He even captures and holds Majesty - QUEEN MAJESTY.  He never gets his comeuppance.  He's out there somewhere sitting on the pile of cash he made selling his wigs.

He's the Coachman of My Little Pony.  You know, the guy who not only got to continue his business of turning boys into donkeys to sell to the highest bidder but made "BOYSSS" the most terrifying word ever.  Everyone thinks of the Evil Queen, Maleficent, or Ursula as Disney's greatest villains.  However, they all ended up dead.  Similarly, the headliners of My Little Pony are either dead or somehow capture.  Yet these two you know whats do the unspeakable and continue merrily on their way.

So yes, "bad man" is the greatest of all time.  He's still out there, waiting for the next pony to lure into his Barber Shop of DOOM!"

LOL. You know what, in every generation, there's a single saboteur. We all know him, he's right there, screwing everything up, and yet he puts on an awkward grimace and everything is forgiven... every. single. time. The Perpetrator in Ponyland, the Deviant in Dream Valley, the Evil in Equestria! The Mastermind that is Spike. Think about it... he's gotta be a mole - no-one is that hopeless, haha!!!

(For the sake of clarity, I'm totally kidding - I adore spike, and I'm sure he has no nefarious intentions!)

Agreed!

There is also the wizard who steals Glory's horn. He is quite unpleasant. Or the slaver who has the twinkle eyed ponies trapped in the mine working...

In a pony sense it is almost certainly Baby Lucky ;)

That's a pretty bad villain, I must admit. However: I must submit another, equally evil and nefarious do-badder.

His name? GARF. (Okay it's "Garth" but Garf is funnier to match his doofy face.)

The Flight to Cloud Castle introduced us to this "charming" specimen of masculinity, which quite possibly created the very first "creepy friendzoned guy" stereotype. I have to imagine once the ponies were out of earshot she got him nose to nose and said, "I admire your dedication and all, but you're going to learn some manners if you want to get past holding my hand.  Got it?"

Though, the real monster of that episode is Aerial's father for setting all this up in the first place.  Turning two men into beasts (even if it was an improvement), putting his own daughter to sleep, and creating a castle to package this flying freak show that tried to kill Garth and the ponies.  I think Garth was just exploding in anger at that point and probably didn't mean half of what he said, what her father did was premeditated.

It's too bad Garth threw his little tantrum, because it brought down a really fascinating episode.  The feel of most of the action taking place in the air was unlike anything in the rest of the series.  Also I did love him and Aerial arguing about him not parking the castle first.  Best dialogue of the whole series.

Ooof, yeah, Garth was painful to watch. I feel like the writers were trying to go for a "slap slap kiss" sort of thing with him and Ariel and failed somewhere down the line x_x; I still wonder if there was meant to be a song in the second part of "Cloud Castle" that got cut for time or whatever.. the ending does feel a bit abrupt. 'Course, I suppose even a song wouldn't have redeemed Garth, but who knows.. that ep isn't my least favourite of the series, I do like it, but it is a bit awkward to watch in places :x.

I did like how that ep just ends vaguely, though, instead of having Garth and Ariel definitely hook up. I thought that was nice.

I have to imagine once the ponies were out of earshot she got him nose to nose and said, "I admire your dedication and all, but you're going to learn some manners if you want to get past holding my hand.  Got it?"

I like this

I'm not as familiar with the Ember's Dream story as I am with some of the other ones. How was Bad Man able to capture Majesty and force her to invite the rainbow ponies to Dream Castle for the "party" so he could cut their rainbow hair? I know this is a US story but given how powerful Majesty is in the UK comics he either had to be very clever or Majesty allowed him to think he had her under his control to teach the rainbow ponies a lesson. Doesn't the story say the rainbow ponies were vain? I know Moonstone was pretty mean to Ember.

I've always wondered why Glory went with the wizard so willingly after he asked if she could tell the difference between good wizards and bad ones. The fact that he didn't tell her what kind he was should have alarmed her more.

Isn't it nice to have real villains who don't have to be made into friends in the end? Though it has been a really long time since I saw Cloud Castle and I had forgotten Garth. Beautiful eighties sexism...reminds me of the time in Jem when Rio stole a bike, chased and climbed aboard a runaway train in order to tell five grown women to pull the emergency cord that they had already used once earlier in the cartoon.

UK ponyland has much more magic anyway, Glory ends up in that place after wishing to leave the  'real world' that lacked magic...aka ponyland... the world she ended up in was much more like UK ponyland.

The irony that Glory wanted to come to UK ponyland but bad Hasbro never let her;) Back to Hasbro as the villain again...

Hasbro I think blew the last of their creativity on G3. G4 sets have almost no creativity or thought put into them at all. I mean the last truly creative ones were the Water Cuties, Magic Scenes and those icky bead hair ponies.

Plus its main character this and main character that. I wanna do something very mean to Hasbro involving their precious main characters and their foreheads because the whole generation in toy and show became stagnant, stale, cheap and lazy too quickly. It's only sposed to get like that towards the end.

That's why Hasbro is the most notorious MLP villain.

Garf is a creepy [BLEEEEEEP!].

Garf:  *tips fedora*  I'm not LIKE other elves.  *creepily strokes picture of Ariel*  My one true love, I will adore you forever!  Unless you reject my advances.  Then I'll let you fall to your death.

I hate him so much.

Also Heart Throb.  What an idiot.

The Flight to Cloud Castle introduced us to this "charming" specimen of masculinity, which quite possibly created the very first "creepy friendzoned guy" stereotype. (See here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x19c480_flight-to-cloud-castle-parts-1-2-my-little-pony-n-friends-1987_shortfilms) His name might as well be Broni Friendzoni, because highlights of his behavior include:

  • Assaulting a bird, and immediately harassing the ponies for a free ride before they can even introduce themselves
  • Almost immediately lets a branch hit the ponies in the face after attacking them
  • His entire Hero's Quest is to prove himself to his true love, however he makes the ponies do all the work for him
  • Sings an entire song about things he would do 'for my true love', gives up 30 seconds after the song ends
  • He blames his failure on the ponies, too, because he is the absolute worst
  • After the ponies babysit him through the final challenges leading to the princess, he informs the very-recently-awoken princess "I woke you from the spell, you're supposed to be mine now"
  • When the princess refuses to return his affections (because he's a creepy stranger who just kissed her while she was asleep), he allows the Cloud Castle to fall from the sky on the logic of "Why should I bother? I don't care anymore!" as he presumably dons his fedora
  • The ponies have to force him to save the castle from falling, otherwise he would have been totally happy to let the princess (and two other people) die
  • He continues calling the princess "My Beloved" and the episode ends on the nightmarish hint that she might fall in love with him later, thus showing the morally dubious lesson of 'don't give up, girls don't know what they want, even if you are a lazy loser who cries about the friendzone and almost kills yourself and three people due to your hurt fee fees, also treating women like property is okay now I guess?'
  • GARTH IS A MONSTER

Going by this logic, The Rainbow of Darkness.

It was what actually came up with the idea of blanketing the world in darkness.

It actually beat The Rainbow of Light by overwhelming it.

And than merges with The Rainbow of Light to avoid punishment and throw all the blame to Tirac, whom was a pretty big jerk at the time, when it learn that the heroes weren't ever going to give up stopping or undoing eternal unnatural communing darkness with high possibility of punishing thou whom step it all in motion.

I only grew up with the cartoons and other than Tirek, Crunch the Rock Dog gets my vote. As a kid I found those rocks that travel with him to be so creepy.

I never really gave Garf much thought. He just seemed to me like an emotionally immature, self-centered, spoiled brat. The G1 cartoons had quite a few of those as either villains or guest characters.

Wow, yeah Garf is really bad...

Also I don't know if this counts since it's from the comics, but what about that Wizard (who inadvertently created TE ponies). Apparently he either dug out the eyes of the ponies so they could work in mines for years (or was it that they lost their sight after working for years?) Either way, some pretty dark stuff!

When I first heard about the jewel wizard I was surprised at how dark that story was. The jewel wizard was more than happy to immediately sentence other ponies to the same fate as the twinkle eyes if they should happen to wonder in to his cave.

Ponies really did used to be used in mines, and would often go blind.  So that's probably where the writers got inspiration.  They were called "pit ponies."

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

They basically replaced child labor with ponies in the 1800s.  Good for the children, bad for the ponies.

Incidentally, this is apparently the origin for the miniature ponies breed.  Gotta be small to fit in those mines.

I rem a good pit pony movie but the name eludes me. Back to the topic at hand:

Yes Tirac is a good villian and I really didnt care for Garf either.

I think a better ending for Heartthrob she should of fell in love with Scorpan at least she could of been with a king. Though she wasnt in that movie sorry Heartthrob. :P I think she was having a blonde pony moment falling for Garf. (bad choice girl.)

I also think Hasbro is the ultimate villain too.

I don't think Hasbro is evil. Am I the only one here? Hello guys, they actually gave us those ponies, remember?! They made MLP and have the right to do what they want with it. I'm kind of angry because it feels like if someone told me what to do with my own characters.

Most of those happened only long after production, not exactly something that could be predicted (or would necessarily matter) up front.  Even the eyelash princesses... aren't nearly as hideous until they get play worn.  Dubious, but not 'Oh my god kill it with fire'.

The REAL Greatest Villain in all of MLP:

Children who destroy their toys.
 That's a common villain for most toylines though

Common but most destructive.

Well common dangers are dangerous because they are common.

But all children are unique and special!! :p So...that means they're each a unique and special danger.
That makes them even more dangerous.Do we need to make a foundation to protect poor ponies?

I think its lostpony!

I was just going to complain that four pages into this thread no one had the right answer, that it's me! and then I saw Loa's post.  It's only when quoting it I see that she didn't actually give me special treatment but used the You thing so she got us all.

I'm so disappointed!  hahaha. not as special as I thought for a moment there.

Veeeeerrrry clever Loa.  I am in awe!

I always hated the spoiled-brat girls like Mae in the Golden Horseshoes and the scullery maid's daughter in the Prince and the Ponies who want to steal ponies and make them pets or just generally eff things up with unreasonable selfishness.  Mae at least came around when you appealed to her better nature but the daughter was just bad through and through!  Nothing worse than being trapped and the plaything of a bully or abuser.  *shudder*

But I think Garth takes the cake  :tort:

I guess he's.... nauuuuuuughtyyyyy.

"La, la la, la la, la la."

I guess the answer would be Tirek based on what he did in both G1 and G4 (G4 fans still sob at Golden Oaks getting destroyed).

Though to me the greatest will always be Nightmare Moon.  :P

Poor unsuspecting ponies if bad man is still out there trying to get them in to his lair to cut their manes to make wigs.

Poor ponies

They dont know hair does grow back thankfully ember was nice enough to help the growing process start. I wonder if kids got the wrong message hair like its ok to cut pony hair cause it will grow back with a magic formula. :/

Let's not forget the Glass Princess Porcina and her Three Stooges Raptorians who also cut off the pony hair...after putting them through a humiliating pony wash.

While Porcina was hardly even evil herself, the Raptorians certainly were.  I vote Moe as the worst villain, however I didn't see the second half of G1 yet so I didn't even see the hair-chopper you guys are talking about.  Porcina was making a magic cloak which worked amazingly but your guy was just making a wig for ...vanity?  Just because?  That's pretty capricious and so, i suppose more evil and a worse villain then.

I do agree lonewolf that destroying the Golden Oak Library was a really bad thing, however it's as much Twilight Sparkle's fault as it is Tirek's for drawing his fire.

Thanks for posting that picture Skycakes. I was thinking of that one but wasn't sure where to find it. It reminds me of how the ponies looked after the Ratorians cut their hair in "The Glass Princess"  I've wondered if the Glass Princess also made kids think that their ponies hair would grow back after it was cut.

Ah so this Ember's Dream bad man, who is not [you] (haha, copying Loa's trick) is an audio story only?  So we don't know what he looks like, and he's just a figment of Ember's dream?  So Majesty wasn't actually captured then...

Where do I get this recording...were there many audio stories?

Of course, the guy who makes donkeys of boys on their way to Pleasure Island on the other hand is very much out there somewhere...good point, Al.  Monstro too.  And Captain Hook, who's hanging out in Shrek's Far Far Away along with quite a few other villains.

I wish we saw more cartoon villains like the Coachman and Tirek, ones who are creepy and ruthless to the core. Instead, most other villains are portrayed as foolish, childish, or they lamely break into song. I always hated that as a kid.

Btw, I've never read the original Pinocchio story, but as I understand it the Coachman is even worse, biting off part of a donkey's ear for throwing Pinocchio off and then doing the same to the donkey's other ear when he tries to warn Pinocchio. In a later part of the story, the Coachman abducts a fully transformed Pinocchio from his home and sells him to a circus.

I think its [you]!

Very funny...not. Even though people call me the next Nobunaga Oda (villain from Samurai Warriors).

I think the biggest villian is Rainbow Dash you never know what she's planning.  Then again it could be Majesty.

Don't mention the coachman from Pinnochio. I had a nightmare well it started of as a nice dream about Five Nights at Freddy's till the coachman appears with his scary face when he says as boys. That woke me up.

The 'bad man' did actually exist.  He did shave the capture Majesty and "force" her to invite the Rainbow Ponies to the party.  He did shave them.  And he did take their hair and do whatever he intended to do with it.

It's just that Ember dreamed it was going to happen first.  However, the Rainbow Ponies just brushed it off thinking she was only saying it because she was envious for not being invited.

Was the Pink Moon mentioned in any of the comics or only in this story?

Thanks LadyMoondancer for uploading that and Ponyfan for sharing the link.

I took a few important lessons from it:
the Rainbow Ponies were so excited that they weren't very sensitive to Ember's feelings....
the pink angel pony says "sometimes baby ponies can be very wise, and grownup ponies can be very foolish"
Ember was selflessly compassionate and got to try the pink lemonade, the rainbow ponies were selfish and didn't get any pink lemonade.

MLP has been teaching what we need to know from the very beginning and I for one could use the review.

As to the topic, the bad man wasn't that bad, he only took their hair and as the angel pony pointed out, they should have listened to Ember's warning and the rainbow ponies could use some time as ordinary ponies to improve their attitudes.  Sure, he was powerful enough not only to capture Majesty but even to compel her to lead the rainbow ponies into his trap....perhaps one of the earliest example of Hasbro throwing characters under the bus to tell a story.  Conclusion:  Hasbro is the worst villain in all of MLP.

What would have happened if the Red Fog found something red? Was it sentient? Would it have killed or sickened everyone? Was it controlled by an outside force? Did it hide strange creatures in it like that one movie? What do you do for ponies who have red on them naturally?
