Title: What are some of your other interests?
Post by: Marshie on September 11, 2020, 08:10:31 PM
What's everyone's other interests other than MLP and other 80s memorabilia?
Personally, I'm into horror, true crime, post-hardcore music, photography and art! I feel like I'm strange for liking cute things and horror/dark things at the same time, but I hear it's actually pretty common!
Let's talk about what you're into and see if we share anything else in common!

Oh, I'm also in the "I love horror and all things dark and scary but also love cute rainbow horses" club! It's nice to know that there are more people like me out there.

I also love paleontology. My local paleontological society chapter had their first digital meeting yesterday. We learned about the differences in jaw structure between Xiphactinus audax, an extinct fish, and Megalops atlanticus, an extant fish. It sounds really nerdy, but it's the kind of stuff I get really excited about.

Paleontology sounds really cool, doesn't sound nerdy to me!! I've only really learned about fossils, fish and animals through Animal Crossing ( ) But I feel like that's a really cool thing to learn about! Keep it up!

Also glad we have eachother at least for horror/dark themed things!!

I feel rather one-note! Pony is definitely my largest interest. I also love thrifting and hunting for them, cleaning them up, customizing, there's a lot of activities so I don't tire myself out.
I also like Animal Crossing, Tokidoki, Pusheen, Pokemon, sewing/fabricwork, I'm getting into Moomin now...I also like organizing information on wikis and such.
There's more, I'm forgetful of those until they come up.

I feel that organizing Wikis interest! My Discord group (just a normal group of close friends) have our own wiki page that do most of the managing and editing on it! I find chronicling things to be fun as well!

I like writing stories!!! I do have some stories based in my Ponyworld if you want a read of them. I also write other stories depending on my mood. I wrote a few for Pinterest & have just found the writing prompts Reddit as well. At the moment I'm writing a big story & I really look forward to getting it finished. It's one of those where I even made some simple art to go with it...

I'm another one of those loves horror and creepy stuff but also loves ponies. Ponies are actually the odd one of my interests, but I do like animal toys in general.

I'm a big science and nature nerd :P I've spent my life learning everything about animals (and insects and anything alive really). Animal rescue and rehabilitation is my passion, but unfortunately my health keeps me from doing it anymore.

Arts & crafts is a huge interest. I dabble in a little bit of everything but my expertise is sculpting and other 3D works. I can't draw very well but I like to paint (mainly animals :P )

Console and PC gaming is another interest. PC building and refurbishing too.

I love space! I have a telescope and the first time I saw Jupiter, I watched it for two hours

I'd like to read them. Where can I find them?

Also BlackCurtains, you got to see Jupiter? That's so cool! Are there any other planets you've seen through your telescope?

I am a huge geek about anything space, quantum, physics or time.  Also the animal world.Archeology too.

MASSIVE history geek...

I like miniature things which also means I have dolls, LEGO and other small toys.
Plus the obsession with all things Japanese, anime and manga.

Also I am into Wicca/NeoPagan stuff so I have lots of rocks and tarot.  I have a collection of rocks that look like animals, aside from my other rock collection.

I like to sew but I am terrible with patterns and following directions.  Just ask my husband who had to save a Halloween costume when I measured 4 times, made a mockup of the pattern, safety pinned and tried it on and made lots of markings... and still put the stupid thing together backwards.  THREE TIMES.

Oh and I read a LOT of books!

Movies (mostly older ones from 1980s to 2000s), music, TV shows (also of the older variety), drawing, reading, collecting things like vinyl records, old books or vintage toys, digital hoarding, walking, photography, daydreaming, world-building, lucid dreams etc.

I'm also a person who enjoys cute things and spooky/scary things, it's good to know that there are other people out there with the same mix of interests!
My main deal above all else is trekking in the countryside, even though it's painful and a bit dicey as I have an injured leg that gives out if too much strain is put upon it. There's some absolutely incredible scenery in the hills just outside town and further afield, especially up on the moors. Haven't seen much of it this year due to the coronavirus situation but once it's properly safe and conscionable to go hiking again, I'll be eager to get back out among the hills and remote villages.
Reading is also a big thing for me, mostly surrealism, ghost stories and folk horror, also a bit of poetry and some classic literature.
I also love tarot reading; it's been interesting to develop a more nuanced connection with the cards over the years, although my deck is feeling its age a bit. It's been looked after well but even with being gentle, it's getting quite worn. I will have to learn to connect with a new deck sometime.
And I'm slowly getting back into writing, art and photography, trying to find an approach that feels natural. It's taking a while, but it'll be worth the effort down the line.

Oh yeah! All of them! Some are just points of light though. I have a 100mm reflector scope and it's strong enough to see details like the swirls on Jupiter and some of its moons, Saturn's rings and the ice caps on Mars. I can get real close to the moon too. If it's dark enough I can see nebulae and other deep sky objects.

Dollhouse/miniatures. I got my first big dollhouse when I was 11, and I loved decorating it and collecting furniture for it. Unfortunately it fell apart during a cross-country move, and in 2015 I tried to rebuild it. I lost all the progress I made when I moved again a year later, and the pieces are sitting in a hopeless bin in my basement. However, I have 3 dollhouse kits that I'm hoping to build when life isn't so chaotic (one house for each of my kids, perhaps?)

Most of my interests are interests I had pre-kids. Liking things like punk-rock music and going to shows just don't really work when you have 3 kids under 6. I used to like to write, but lack of sleep has taken its toll and these days I feel like I have the inspiration and creativity of a dishcloth.

I do like to read, and lately have been really into historical fiction books. I draw sometimes, usually pictures of ponies for my son. However, at 5 years old, he is rapidly overtaking my skill as an artist, and won't need me to draw for him too much longer!

It's so nice to hear everyone's other interests and it seems like we have a very diverse group here!
I hope everyone had a fun day today!!

All things animal-related and nature-related!  I love learning all about animals and ecosystems, studying animal behavior, and taking care of animals.  It's also my job - I'm a biologist at a museum where we have lots of dead and live animals (my ideal day involves holding at least one live snake).  I'm also passionate about killing invasive plants...REALLY passionate   Feel free to message me anytime about any animal thing you want to talk about/ask about!

I also love the X-Files, Star Wars, Welcome to Night Vale, and mystery novels (Tony Hillerman and Tess Gerritsen are my fave mystery authors).  During the pandemic I've been listening to lots of true crime youtube videos.  They are shorter than books on tape but still long enough for me to do something productive while they are playing in the background.  Pre-pandemic I also enjoyed playing ice hockey and swimming, and I'm really missing those activities!

I'm the same way, I love cute/wholesome stuff and horror stuff at the same time. I would absolutely love it if MLP went back to creepier monsters and more dangerous fantasy elements other than "big magical laser beams"

I'm a historian. Kind of. xD. Currently trying to turn PhD thesis into a book because right now Covid has got in the way of trying to get from graduating with the PhD to getting an academic job (and I refuse to give up on it even though the current situation may have made it hopeless going forward).

I've always been interested in mediaeval history but my area of specialism is the warrior tales of mediaeval Japan.

I;ve written stories since I was a small kid - both fanfiction and my own. One day I will get one published. Maybe.

I like to travel, which is ironic given that I have really bad problems with navigating. When I was in London, I used to travel the buses a lot and also go out exploring, walking by bus stop so I didn't get lost. I miss that :( But I also love (and miss!) visiting other countries.

I'm also into anime and manga and stuff. I translate sometimes for communities - I translated manga in the past and I have translated a bunch of cd dramas for another community recently.

Something I used to do a lot of was make doll clothes, but not so much in recent years. Mostly for Jem. I don't have the practical skills to use a sewing machine but randomly I do have the practical skills to sew by hand. Go figure.

And I guess this is obvious from the other comments but I really love languages. I speak Japanese and my French is rusty but I can still read it. I have a smattering of other languages as well.

Finally...football (Soccer if you're in the US). To watch, not to play.

I'm also an artist, mainly creating fantasy illustration.
I also collect Ty Beanies - especially Halloween ones
Into the Masters of the Universe franchise but as of yet don't have any toys
I love Nintendo games and PC games such as Minecraft and Hearthstone
Spend most of my free time on such games (But maybe shouldn't haha.) And walking in nature with my partner and/or the family dog  :fox:

Are you me? >.> I love Tokidoki, Pusheen and Pokemon as well. I'm getting back into sewing! (I also live in PA, more south/central tho. Lancaster county)

On topic: I collect pyrex, 80s toys, I love to color and play World of Warcraft. We just bought a house and it really messed with my depression, so right now, I actually don't love anything - not even my family. :)

My main interests are Anime, Japanese mythology, and currently xianxia/wuxia books/ series and video games. I also enjoy playing with resin.

Wuxia ( 武俠 wǔ xiá ) - literally means "Martial Heroes". Fictional stories about regular humans who can achieve supernatural fighting ability through Chinese martial arts training and internal energy cultivation. Themes of chivalry, tragedy, revenge & romance are common.

Xianxia ( 仙侠 xiānxiá ) - literally means "Immortal Heroes". Fictional stories featuring magic, demons, ghosts, immortals, and a great deal of Chinese folklore/mythology. Protagonists (usually) attempt to cultivate to Immortality, seeking eternal life and the pinnacle of strength. Heavily inspired by Daoism.

I know this thread is a little old, but I was considering making a similar thread and I found this one so I might as well respond here instead!

My biggest interest at the moment is Battle for Dream Island, a silly little cartoon about talking objects competing for prizes.  I'm also into Popee the Performer, an old CGI animated kids series from Japan.

Some of my non-animated interests include machine learning, linguistics (especially phonetics), and vocal synthesis.  The human voice is an amazing thing, and it's incredible how well technology can be taught to replicate it, especially via stuff like Tacotron2.  Funnily enough, my interest in these three things is connected to my interest in ponies!  It's a pretty long story, but essentially, bronies were the people who introduced me to the concept of training an AI to mimic a human voice.  I might actually make a thread about it in Pony Corral.

Some toys I like are Furbies and Tamagotchis.  I have a couple of both lines.

My dogs :)

I like to read books about history. Usually European history but lately I've been trying to read more U.S. history since I've realized that i don't know a lot about the history of the country I actually live in. I'm also trying to branch out and read about other parts of the world. I also like to read novels but I haven't been able to handle anything too emotional during the pandemic. I've also been listening to a lot more podcasts lately.

I don't watch a lot of new movies. All of my favorites are at least 25 years old at this point. If it came out after 2002 I probably haven't seen it. For TV i like X-files and Fringe. But also during the pandemic I've been watching a lot of older sitcoms. I can watch Seinfeld pretty much on repeat and not get sick of it.

I also like to build websites. Even though its my 9-5 I like building sites and doing code challenges for fun. I don't have much creative freedom at my job so side projects give me the opportunity to learn and try out newer tech. Though i'm not great at actually finishing my side projects. I usually abandon them for a while and come back. I also like to blog about web development. I'm hoping to do more blogging in the coming year.

Hockey, baseball, football...I enjoy most sports (either watching or playing depending on the sport itself :)). I adore hiking and camping; my trips center around hiking in the U.S. National Parks.  Unfortunately the Midwest has little in the way of hiking to the level I prefer, but that’s all the more reason to travel!

So my current main non toy related interests are EDM and video games. Before the pandemic I used to go to raves and festivals in colorful outfits and I hope to go again once it's over. During the pandemic I got into open ended survival type games like Minecraft and Terraria but I've played many other kinds of games in the past.

Absolutely. Me and my boyfriend sometimes listen at home but can't really dance because we are on the second floor. New Year's Eve going into 2020 was when the last indoor event we attended was. We didn't go to anything in the two and a half months before events were restricted because the flu was going around (and we figured we would have all the rest of the year. Boy were we wrong.) On a more positive note we did at least get to attend one very small socially distant camping "festival" in the early fall. Basically they had a stage where they played music and everyone could dance at their campsite. Visiting other campsites wasn't allowed and you needed to mask and distance on paths and restrooms. Not as much fun as events before the virus but better than nothing.

80s stuff: Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Popples, Jim Henson stuff (lots of it), Jem, LPS, random 80s anime and cartoons.
My other main intrest is videogames, primarily the Sonic series. Others like Pokemon, Mario, and 80s Arcade games in general. Sega games overall. Anything Sonic Team made. :P 90s pc games like Catz/Dogz and Tycoons.
I also collect American Girl, certain historical dolls and the "Today" stuff from 1995 to mid 2000s, even some modern stuff.
Outside entertainment I enjoy drawing just not as frequent as I used to. I'm an introvert but I walk as often as possible, outside and just around malls, and used to trail bike a bit. Might again sometime.

I've always been into finding new things to explore, as a kid I did martial arts, theatre, made movies, riding horses, collected vintage and old things in general, anything art, animals, DJing, swimming, gymnastics..and much more.

This mostly continued through my teens, and I went to raves a lot as I was a DJ. Started with ballet as well, ballet school.  And as I hit the 20s I added going out to my list, especially concerts, mainly Black Metal. Travelling a lot.
I'm into most these things still.

Now: Quit martial arts and gymnastics but got into synthesis and producing. I collect a lot of things - have a insane closet with vintage from late 1800s through every decade up till now.
Antiques and curio.
All kinds of 80s and 90s stuff, toys, clothes, everyday items like makeup and such.
Collecting rare perfumes, mainly vintage.
I own a horse so I train a lot of jumping and horsemanship and all that.
I'm also a historian so that entails restoration of silent films and archiving.
Dangerous and strange plants, mainly old witch/medicinal/psychoactive plants - that's been a passion since childhood but back then I couldn't grow my own plants. And, no, I do not use them for anything else than house plants.
I have a lot of interests..always, hehe

Since I retired from the military and then later achieved at least comfortably ever after by moving back to our old stomping grounds in Eastern Oregon (no more rent, ever; just property taxes which come to around $100 per month), interests have expanded to include biking around town; especially along the river walk  (https://www.bitchute.com/video/0iHIIKPhdR9E/), toobing along the river that goes through town (https://www.bitchute.com/video/z73urBlYPn2X/).

Also, taking care of the front and back yards as we prep them for new grass next year, and various types of gardening (sunflowers, cannabis, peppers, leeks, etc)  The first two are grow hobbies I have really immersed myself in, with intention of breeding.  These are really bringing out my inner mad scientist with the things I want to try.  :)  Seems almost cliched that retirement would result in me taking up gardening.  I also enjoy just spending time sitting on the front porch with a good drink and a bowl of some homegrown stuff, and just be.

Inside, working on my eCrater, Etsy, eBid, and eBay stores takes a good amount of my time, with some time for general YouTube and BitChute surfing, a few animes, and movies; as well as casual gaming in Valheim or City of Heroes.  About to start Borderlands 2 later tonight as well, and will probably get immersed in that for a while.

At least you get to hear some live music. I think outdoor concerts must be the way to go but it needs to be more Glyndebourne...

I have a lot of different stuff I love.

I really enjoy gardening, I'm trying to get better with my green thumb.

As for collecting, I used to collect ponies, but have not since g3. I collect Breyer model horses. I also love traditional animation, horses, cooking/baking, animals, Nintendo, and anything farm related. I love to go to concerns but haven't been to one in a long time.

My absolute number one passion in life is cartoons. Naturally, I'm the most fond of the cartoons that came out the main decade I grew up in, the 90s (born in late 80s), but I appreciate them from all eras really. This is also where My Little Pony comes in, as I am a huge fan of the first 80s cartoon series.

This goes hand in hand with my passion for drawing, where my favorite field is character design and world building.

I love toy collecting in general, and I think my other collections more than make up for my relatively small pony collection. I tend to buy toys and merchandise to some degree for most media I'm a fan of, but my biggest collections are for Pokemon and Digimon. I also collect dolls to some extent, but I am extremely picky about the type of doll I pick up and have mostly come to own Pullip types. Love reading up on dolls I have no interest in owning personally and am always on the lookout for new doll blogs.

I LOVE animals and have over the years developed a particular fascination for insects. I can't do math so I can't be a biologist, but I'm currently approaching entomology from another angle by writing about the topic for my master's thesis in environmental studies. I have no idea if I'm ever going to finish this in time as I am not very academically inclined, but I figured it's worth a try.

I have two pet budgies I adore above all else.  :bird: :bird:

Also worth mentioning but won't go into detail: Video games, movies, the circus, traveling, languages, boxing

I’m obsessed with just drawing and art. I don’t really draw mlp related stuff more of just what I think about. I also just love anything that’s cute or pastel.

I'm interested in many things! I guess first it'd be easy to list other things I collect!

-Dolls (Monster High, Ever After High, Barbie, Shopkins Shoppies, LOL OMGs, Rainbow High, Pullip, Licca-chan, I'll also buy miscellaneous dolls that appeal to me too)
-Squishmallows
-Furbys
-Care Bears
-Shopkins (as I listed in the dolls, including Shoppies, which are the focus of the collection)
-Sanrio merchandise
-Animaniacs merchandise
-Pui Pui Molcar merchandise
-Koge-Donbo* (my favorite artist) merchandise
-anime/video game figures
-music (mostly CDs, sometimes vinyl)

Beyond collecting, I'm also really into listening to music of course, given I do collect it. My favorite genre is progressive rock/progressive metal!

A big interest of mine is animals, they're all great, but the arthropod phylum are some of my favorites. I think the career I would like to get in the future is getting into arthropodology. I think it'd be super fun to study my favorite animal phylum for a living. I enjoy taking pictures of them with my phone outside in my free time. I hope to upgrade to a real camera with a macro lens someday so I can get even better photos. Some of my favorite arthropods, listing them in groups:

Spoiler
Class Insecta:

-Order Lepidoptera
-Order Orthoptera
-Order Coleoptera (special shoutout to Superfamily Curculionoidea)
-Order Odonata
-Order Phasmida
-Order Mantodea

Class Arachnida:

Order Araneae (I'm not gonna list any of the taxa levels between order and family lol, too complicated):
-Family Salticidae (my #1 favorite animals of all time)
-Family Lycosidae
-Family Araneidae
-Family Theraphosidae
-Family Eresidae
-Family Deinopidae

-Order Opiliones
-Order Solifugae
-Order Amblypygi

Subphylum Myriapoda:

-Class Diplopoda

Subphylum Crustacea:

-Order Isopoda

I do upload and share photos I take of arthropods, as well as other animals and the occasional plant or fungus on iNaturalist! Here's my page! (https://www.inaturalist.org/people/3581822) My screenname there is about Lepidopterans because I set up my iNat before I decided on Salticids being my favorite arthropods lmao. Lepidopterans remain a close second.

Well hello?! I never thought I'd stumble across a fellow arthropod enthusiast at the pony forums!  :whoa:

I actually grew up terrified of anything crawly, but fear and fascination always went kind of hand in hand for me and as I started to put in all the effort I could to conquer my fear, it turned into an obsession, and I went from freezing in fear from large bugs to coaxing them into my bare hands very quickly.

I started out fancying the lepidoptera most of all and I still love them a lot, but now my absolute favorite is the blattodea  :lovey: Ever since I discovered hissing cockroaches at a pet shop I have been smitten with how big and gentle they are.

I also LOVE weevils and wasps. And while I'm mostly focused on insects, I like other arthropods as well, spiders and millipedes being a big favorite. I tried my hand at keeping a couple of giant African millipedes at some point, but they were unfortunately short lived. I'd like to try again sometime, but I need to gain a lot more knowledge in order to be sure I'm able to provide for them.

I tried signing up for iNaturalist but it's having some trouble loading for me right now. I'll try again later.

Yay for arthropods! They're so fun and (mostly) small! Blattodea are really neat! I could totally see myself looking into getting a hissing cockroach for a pet someday. They're super cute. Though I think my most wanted pet insect would be some sort of mantis. My most wanted pet arthropod overall would be a jumping spider of course, as they're my favorite animals in the world. I want a Hyllus diardi specifically. :)

Good taste! I was actually on my way to get a pet mantis after a friend told me they had them at a local pet store. They didn't, but they did have hissing cockroaches... and that's how that love started. :lovey: I've kept them ever since, but I'm struggling a lot with the ones I currently have as I think they've caught some kind of mold >_< I was very pleased when I first got this batch that they didn't have any mites, but chances are mites would actually have been able to combat the mold. Might have a look around and see if I can get a hold of some.

I have a lot to learn still, in other words. ^^;

Jumping spiders are amazing! They are SO cute and I think they serve as a nice gateway to convert crawly skeptics. Lol. I frequently got jumping spider visitors when I lived in Japan, here in Norway they are not as common but I just found one the other day and was ecstatic. Looked up your fav and it's sooo cute, good size too!

Ah yeah I remember hearing about how mites help out a lot with hissing roaches! I hope you're able to get your hands on the right type of mites to help out your roaches!

Jumpers are cute haha. I think my favorite species overall is Mopsus mormon, but I don't think people captive breed them though so I wouldn't be able to get one as a pet. I hope people breed them someday, the males are so silly looking. I think a Hyllus diardi would be a wonderful one for a pet since the Hyllus genus are the largest jumpers, and I know diardi does get bred in captivity. The bigger the jumper the easier it is to see their adorable face.

For me that is raising moths and butterflies, something I have not done in years till now. I caught one and she laid eggs in the soup container I now have 7 little ones to look after. They seem to be doing well, currently and two stages away from pupa stage.

I actually got a no-kidding amateur radio license on a whim. Literally went from "hmm, I think I'll Google this" to "I take the test tomorrow" in the space of a couple weeks. Then a first-try pass and KF0FUT was on the air!

Both my parents and my ever-patient wife now have confirmation that I'm completely nuts. But it's been an interesting journey that resulted in something actually useful.

Hilariously, I actually have a job as a "show host" doing morning announcements at my current job, complete with proper use of my radio callsign and the best "radio voice"  I can do. My boss now not only expects to present each morning but made my role an actual approved thing. Life is weird!

SO COOL! I also am fond of moths a whole bunch! I have a field guide on them and know a lot of cool facts! I’d love to raise them one day (when I finally move out of my parent’s house! ((yes I’m 23 and still live with parents,,)) )

Besides the love of MLPs I love: Family Time - we would watch a movie, or if its a Family event play Dominos or dice which includes: my mom, my sis, my grandpa & granny, great aunt jean and sometimes my bro and his wife. Next weekend is Cranberry fest, so it will be a family reunion again.
Fancy Cars - my favorite car is the Ford Maverick Grabber blue Gold Stripping. It was my dads first car and its becoming very popular in car shows in Wisconsin.
Video Games - PS4 games are soo fun such as Uncharted I want to play The Last of Us 2. I have a PS5 now I just am trying to finish my Ps4 games.
Music - All Music
& My Inspiration.... Mark Wahlberg! with the Motto - Inspire to be better! for some odd reason after I met him on May-12-2017... I like changed big time... I saw that the friends I was hanging out with were toxic to me... Its like I saw a whole new me; even though its not with him... I'm inspired to be better everyday.  ^.^
