Title: Customizing G5 Shining Adventures Hitch Trailblazer (these will be challenging!)
Post by: Eruna on August 20, 2021, 06:43:43 PM
I bet the bullet and bought the set of six ponies from target today! I do intend to customize at least a few of them. The first one that I’m going to do is hitch. I took him out of the box and wow, they are so different from the other ponies. The head literally pops right off with no effort because it swivels completely on a ball joint. Please see the pictures I have attached. The body is really heavy and solid I have no idea how I will get the tail out ha ha. I was able to remove his molded hair and remove the ball joint with just my hands no tools.
You can see the details in the image folder. It looks like I might be able to get through the tail through the neck hole, but the hole is about the size of  the circumference of a US dime coin. Wish me luck and feel free to ask any questions!

Oh I’m excited you were able to pop the molded hair off! I repainted mine to be a little more show accurate but the molded hair still bothers me so much! I’m excited to see what you do with yours!

Oh cool! Do you have any specific plans for him?

As I expected, removing his molded hair leaves a huge dent in his head, huh. I'm interested to see what customizers will do about this. I've heard a few people express an interest in giving him rooted hair.

Thanks much for the breakdown!

I think Shining Armors who have been customized usually look pretty cute, so I'd imagine just pierce through the dent if possible.

Did you see all the images?  The "dent" looks huge, I don't think it will really be possible to do that without some kind of modification.  Unless you mean to do it a way other than how I'm imagining!  I'm thinking we would have to fill it in with sculpey or something and then pierce that?

Maybe air dry clay? That way it call be all smooshed into the dent and then it doesnt need to be baked. And alot of it like the crayola version is still relatively soft after drying vs bring hard as a rock like sculpey and could potentially be rooted into. I dont know how it could be secured afterwards though, because its not like a normally rooting where you can just dump glue into the head afterwards...

The dent in the head IS huge. Rooted hair would be tough, but filling in the area with apoxie or something similar and then gluing a wig over the area would work. The front and top of the head can be rooted as usual but the back is definitely a challenge. For my planned custom, I will actually be making hard molded hair (it's part of the character) so it won't be an issue.
The "girl" ponies with regular brushable hair don't have the depression at the back.

FYI I was able to remove the tail by twisting and pushing the hair back into the body, and reaching through the skinny neck hole with long needle-nosed pliers until I was able to grab the hair. The hair is held with a strip of metal, not a plastic washer, so I bet these ponies will get some rust if played with in water. That said, the hair is really nice, smooth and shiny.

I just prepped a 6-inch Izzy Moonbow-the Unicorn Charms one-she's very similar. :) It's not worth even trying to save the tail, just cut it and poke it in from the outside. I couldn't shove it in far enough to reach it with pliers or anything. The hair on the inside of the head, like the 3-inch brushables, isn't glued so removing her hair is very easy.

That is a pretty sizable dent, good thing your custom’s going to have molded hair. Best of luck, excited to see the result!  :good:

In retrospect, maybe dent wasn't the right word to use... more like HUGE, GAPING HOLE
