Depends on what you count as different "kinds." :) My Little Wiki's G1 page is a good place to start, as well as their list of ponies by sets.

Dream Valley is a great site - she lists all the different groups of ponies by year, with pictures so it would be easy for you to pick your favorite from each group.

Every body classes things a little different but I guess you could do

Earth - Adult
Earth - Baby
Earth - Newborn
Earth - Teeny Tiny
Earth - Baby Ballerina
Earth - Ballerina
Earth - Baby Brother
Earth - Brother
Earth - Sweetheart Sister
Earth - Secret Surprise
Earth - Bride

Pegasus - Adult
Pegasus - Baby
Pegasus - Newborn

Flutter
Winger

Unicorn - Adult
Unicorn - Baby
Unicorn - Newborn

Sea - Adult
Sea - Baby

Mermaid

I think every pony can fall into one of these categories. But you will find that other people class things differently.

I often use Ponyland Press when looking up certain groups of ponies. This page has them divided up into years, then sets.
US ponies: http://www.ponylandpress.com/us/
Euro/UK ponies: http://www.ponylandpress.com/europe/

I know most of us are redirecting you to other sites instead of actually giving you a list, but it's a pretty complex request. As Mul-ta said, people ave different ideas on what a "kind" of pony is.  For instance, would you consider the Windy Wings and Summer Wings ponies different kinds, or the same? Are Newborn Twins different from Newborn Babies? Are you including Euro exclusive varieties like the Cookery ponies (who really aren't that different from basic ponies) and the Great Hair ponies (who are)? Not to mention there types within types, like Princess Ponies: your basic tinselly princesses, the Brush and Grow Princesses, the "eyelash" princesses, and other that are just called princesses for the heck of it, types upon types of babies, gimmick upon gimmick...it's a mess!

One of each kind sounds like a great idea for building your collection, but you might have to decide for yourself what counts. I hope you have fun with it!

Oh...if you don't mean by type - as in the list above - then do you mean by set? i.e. one from the twice as fancy set, one from the big brother set, one from the summer wing set? If thats the case then www.mlpland.com has a nice list of ponies by set which should make it easier.

My guess is they're asking about sets as they mentioned Big Brothers and Flutters.

Well thats where it gets confusing because then you think - is it individual sets...or types of pony? Because there would be two sets of Flutters but one type of Flutter. So if its type you look for one pony, if its set you look for two ponies one from each set :P

That's the problem. There's just way too many ponies.

And I am SO grateful for that. Otherwise I would be bored to tears with just collecting G4 (only collect Rarity, Cadance and playful pony variants) if I didn't collect G1's and G2's. XD
