Apparently they announced a new G5 comic series. So I guess the crossover was just there to fill in the gap between G4 and G5.

Off Topic / Re: Hasbro lost Disney Princess...
« on: February 05, 2022, 12:59:51 AM »
I was surprised to see the inferior quality and uncanny facial design being mentioned. I've felt that way from the very first dolls Hasbro introduced, and it never really turned around. They geared the brand towards younger kids, turning off the more adult collectors I guess.

I find it funny that they said that because there were lots of complaints about Mattel's quality before they lost the license. Hopefully they learned but I do kinda suspect Disney doesn't want the regular retail dolls to do too good because that would hurt the sales of their own Shop Disney dolls.

I heard about this from a friend.  Something has always seemed a little off to me about the Hasbro Disney dolls.  I'm pretty sure I don't own a Disney doll made by Hasbro but I have many Mattel made ones.

Honestly I don't think I have any Hasbro DP fashion dolls either. Hasbro's strongest point is figures (even with Equestria Girls the Minis were a lot better than the actual dolls) and I did like and have some of the different DP mini figures they made. I actually liked them better than Mattel's which were basically just Fashion Polly but with Princesses.

I looked up the writer and found their twitter and apparently they are 41.   :what:

She said that issue 4, "It's truly my favorite issue!"  :drunk:

But was it truly outrageous?

41 means they have no excuse. THey'd actually have GROWN UP with G1.

That doesn't mean they were familiar with the media. It could be a situation like Lauren Faust where she pretty much made up her own personalities and storylines for the ponies they played with.

Yes, but, in that context you don't choose to do a G1 crossover with an existing storyline. You use one of your own, like she did.

What doesn't make sense is saying they are a fan of G1, but at the same time, not managing to get the plot or the ponies in the g1 storyline correct.  Because you would also think they'd research the subject if it was something they'd never come across.

I never saw the movie as a kid. I wrote lots of pony stories, but I never wrote a story involving Hydia and the smooze, even though they appeared randomly in that one comic when I was about nine or so. It's not something you get inspired by if you haven't seen it. But if you have seen it, you should at least reference it accurately...or not call the comic a 'crossover'.

I stand by my point.

I agree, they probably half read the synopsis on wiki and just threw everything at the wall.

Or their only interaction with G1 was as a kid so they are merely going by memory from years ago and filling in the blanks with their own imagination. I certainly don't remember every detail of things I watched as a kid and I was always super detail oriented. Thirty years is a long time.

I was talking about Frankenstein, which is the name Frankie Stein came from. Not his monster. :) Smart Frankie combined both concepts.

Not sure what you mean about marketers and AJ, or in fact, Ghoulia. Is there some data that I'm missing?

I just mean like the "girls must like pink" kind of ridiculousness. AJ and Ghoulia were probably the least "girly" in their respective franchises.

They say they want to push diversity. I think that's a key part of what MH was originally, but whether they really mean it or not will depend on whether Ghoulia comes back/is changed and how they handle it. Another reason I disliked the last reboot was her removal. I don't know for sure why she was removed, but she represented those who communicate differently, and those kids need a role model too. Especially at the moment.

Tbh it's the same reason Applejack always got left out. Her color scheme wasn't marketable enough. She was more a favorite of adult collectors than little girls and there's more of them than there is of us. While I'd love if Ghoulia returned, I'd also be ok if they added a new character that filled the same role. Tbh I kinda liked how in the reboot Frankie got some of Ghoulia's traits because it made her more interesting but I wish she'd gotten more than just the smart nerdiness.

Applejack sold better here than some of the others, most notably Pinkie Pie. It's my impression that it was the bronies who dissed AJ, not the kids. It's certainly the G4 fans I've seen most of the negatives from but I've seen and heard kids in stores here asking specifically for AJ. I never heard a single kid ask for Pinkie Pie. It's true that older collectors probably liked her more and showed here favour, but I didn't ever see that from the bronies.

Eh marketers are often wrong of course but if they think something "won't sell" they won't do it.

I didn't like any part of Frankie coopting the smart aspect of Ghoulia. I've said it before, but Ghoulia worked as a character not just because she communicated differently but becadue she broke the mould, being a smart zombie. Something that wasn't the standard. Frankie didn't add anything in that regard in G2. She was just smarter. And while it made sense n context with Frankenstein and all. But it was so bland it didn't really push any

Frankenstein's monster isn't exactly depicted as smart either. I do sometimes wonder if Ghoulia would have eventually returned if the reboot lasted longer. She could have become best friends with Frankie.

That's surely a bad example to set to kids?!!

Um...what is? A robot that can sign its name? And how?? 0_o

Assuming the bad example was the idea of getting a toy signed, ie scribbling on a toy and defacing it?

I don't agree that it's always bad if a kid writes on or "defaces" their toys. Of course it depends on why they are doing it since there's a difference between wanting to be creative or destructive (tho sometimes it's just because they don't want their friend to take home the wrong pony). If it's like that little girl in one of the Toy Story movies who ended up with Stinky Pete rather than like Sid. Tbh dog chewed ponies get me the more upset because that's a careless kid leaving their toys laying around with a puppy.

I can't stand when some thrift stores write the price directly on a toy though. What kid wants to play with a pony with 50¢ written on its side?

I said it on the other thread about the rarest ponies, but the sad thing is that we talk about these cases of people outside of MLP high pricing ponies, actually as pony collectors we're mostly the ones who jack up the prices for each other.

We don't do it on purpose, it just kind of happens over time. And the more it happens, the more people see collectors selling x pony for x price, the more that pony becomes cemented in at a higher price. I've been thinking about this especially with some of the crazy Mimic prices over the last couple of years...and the way that some Nirvana prices have remained jawdroppingly high.

We complain about and laugh at the people at markets or on websites who have silly prices and wrong information. But some ID websites still have wrong information and we still pay silly prices among ourselves...both of which are more trusted than the outside people. At the end of the day, we don't buy those silly priced market stall ponies. But we do buy stuff from one another.

I'm getting philosophical but it feels like what we should really be examining is how much collectors have inflated pony prices simply by getting caught in bidding wars with one another and creating sudden demand as certain ponies go in and out of fashion...

Because Rapunzel DOES sell for 1k$ quite a lot. And even giving time and inflation, she was never selling for anywhere close to that amount when I started collecting. I know 10k is ludicrous. But I've always thought that 900-1k$ for any pony is also crazy :/

Yeah but when they do go high there's often a reason to seller missed that doesn't apply to their pony. Like trying to sell a dirty haircut pony for as much as one that is so pristine it looks like it was just removed from it's packaging yesterday. Or seeing the handmade plush go for ridiculous prices and expect a normal factory plush to go for the same amount.

Oh so many but off the top of my head, besides Pinkie Cooper, Catwalk Kitties, and Off the Hook:

Cutie Pops
Novi Starz
Bratzillaz
Capsule Chix (they were designed by the creator of Monster High but the vending machine gimmick really hampered it's success)

I love the glittering shs and the prom queens, also. I wish we'd had the prom queens here. Even though, culturally speaking, it wouldn't have made any sense at the time of the release.

They could have always changed the name to something more culturally relevant since a prom is just a fancy dance and I'm sure there's some kind of fancy dances you have over there.

I still think the way parents have buy toys has changed a lot in recent years. I saw a few posts on social media that make the joke about the Amazon person being Santa. And tbh it makes sense. Both parents often work (if there even are still two) and shopping with kids seems to be a huge pain. If it's not too cold I'll take a walk outside and a lot of houses in the area had many packages on their porches in the days leading up to Christmas.

Pony Corral / Re: NEED HELP: removing perfumes & artifical fragrances?

Thank you both so much! I really appreciate this and I LOVE when people cross reference with other disciplines for their restoring knowledge. I’ll have to look into car stuff!

I know some ponies are sensitive to UV exposure, and about the pink hair, but those things certainly bear repeating! One other question - I would imagine the vinyl parts of a car that get UV damage get a lot more exposure due to being inside an object with windows that’s usually stored outside. My understanding of the average MLP sun fading/UV light box session is that that only takes a matter of hours/days. Wouldn’t shorter exposure time mean less potential for long term damage?

My reference to car stuff was just to do with maintenance in general I guess. The damage from UV will be proportional to the length of exposure but no-one knows exactly what combination of and intensity of environmental triggers cause plastic breakdown to become noticeable. Symptoms are yellowing of iether or both head and body, stickiness which usually starts inside first, appearance of brown spots.

In general, it is thought best to keep soft plastic clean, dry, at a stable temperature and away from UV light. It is also though best to keep it away from other soft plastics such as plastic bags however this may be due to the increase in humidity rather than a chemical reaction between the different types of plastic. That said, the V&A museum keep two of each Barbie. One is kept intact the other has the parts separated to reduce any breakdown due to chemical reactions between the different materials.

With any restoration work it's entierly It's entirely "your pony, your choice" however I personally would not want to buy a pony if I knew it had been sunfaded. Some inks will disappear after just a few days of sunfading in which case you might think it's worth it. Some inks disappear after a few months. If you sunfade, maybe you will have a few years of pony looking good, but they will start to show visible plastic breakdown a few years earlier than they otherwise would.

I have a theory that a lot of the problems with yellowing and pony cancer etc. that we see in the community are made worse by collectors using harsh treatments like sunfading and peroxide etc. to get a short-term improvement in the pony's appearance. Unfortunately they are then sold to other collectors who don't realise what has been done to them, and then in a few years they start to yellow etc. This has happened to me with white, higher value ponies like June rose and Port-O-Bella, but of course it's impossible to prove.

So you feel that marks that can't be removed with a gentle wash should probably be accepted as a permanent part of the pony?

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Re: My Very Own Puppy! Anyone collect them?

I'd not heard of these, they are all really cute, the husky looks so playful and happy.

They're from the 90's, I honestly never heard of them until I saw one of my friends had one she got from a garage sale but she didn't know what it was. I thought they were cute so I tried looking up keywords until I found some on eBay. I don't think they did very well because you never really hear of them. I do know the original guy that made the prototypes wasn't happy with what Mattel did with it.

http://melbirnkrant.com/puppy/index.html

Honestly I kinda understand why they did it because the price point would have been too high and MGA wasn't really a player then because they wouldn't have been as price conscious.
