Title: Did you ever rename your ponies?
Post by: Mrs. Prospector on July 12, 2021, 08:59:17 PM
Do you have any ponies that you've given new names, either as a child, or part of your current collection?

I gave some, though not all of my G3's new names as a kid.

My namesake, Mrs. Prospector, was my name for Lolligiggle as a kid. She was named after Mr. Prospector, a prominent sire of racehorses whose name I overheard while watching the Kentucky Derby as a child, just because I thought the name was funny and reminded me of Stinky Pete from Toy Story.

Triple Treat was Candy Larry. I named a bunch of my toys Larry as a kid. I don't know why.

Rainbow Dash was Charlie Horse. At the time, I had no idea that a "Charley Horse" was a name for a muscle spasm. I just really liked the name Charlie.

Star Catcher was creatively, Pegasus. When I got Twirlerina, she got upgraded to Queen Pegasus and Twirlerina was King Pegasus.

Flower Flash wasn't labeled on the packaging with Petal Blossom, so I named her Baby Blossom. When I got a duplicate with the Skywishes music box, that one became her twin, Baby Petal.

Most of my babies I renamed, albeit very uncreatively. Butter Drop was Baby Cookie and Sandy Island was Baby Bucket.

Brights Brightly was Sunrise, Royalette was Sparkles, Royal Bouquet was Rose, and Pretty Pop was Gumball.

Crystal Lake was Twinkle Twirl, because I confused her for Twinkle Twirl for all those years.

What new names have you bestowed upon your ponies, past or present?

Yup.

Childhood ponies:

Sweet Pop was Popsicle.

I thought Salty was a dumb name and didn't understand the meaning, so I called him Tugboat.

Sunny Bunch was given to me by a friend and I didn't know her name,  so I called her Cassidy. I can't remember why.

Adult ponies:

Blushie was bought for me at a swapmeet, and I didn't know her name.  My daughter suggested I call her Bouquet,  and when I found out her name...well, her name is Bouquet as far as I'm concerned. Gorgeous pony, but Blushie is such a dumb name.

I didn't change 4-Speed's name, as much as I switched it to a regional name. Trucker is much better.

Its my belief that Hasbro had one too many mai tais when they named the tropical ponies. Hula Hula doesn't make any sense, so I gave her a Hawaiian name, Kalea.

It's funny you say that, because while I don't rename ponies any more (unless it's accidental, LOL!), I had plenty of them as a kid! Probably because I was so young, I simply couldn't read/didn't remember their proper names. Dancing Butterflies simply because Butterflies - because she had multiple butterflies on her! "Beachy Keen and Baby" (both didn't even have a real name as I recall?) became Mommy Cat and Kitten! And so it went. Star Hopper became Space Ship, Sparkle Baby Gusty became Baby Balloon, Surprise was Balloons! Some of the names I like more than the 'real' names, because they just make sense! ;)

Not in that sense, but several had nicknames that made them easier to remember - very obvious childhood nicknames, like Masquerade was Masky, Vanilla Treat was Nillie, Tropical Breeze was Tropi, etc etc. Baby Sister Sweet Celebrations was Cele (pronounced Selly). Nothing very original. Dancing Butterflies was Dabu. I remember that.

When my sister had the same pony as me they'd become twins, usually babies. So Baby Sunbright = Sunbright & Brightie, Tiddly Winks = Tiddly & Winks, etc etc.

...But when we found ponies at the carboot sale we didn't recognise (ones not sold in the UK) we'd come up with equally silly names for those. German Skydancer (Himmelstanzer) was Seagull. Pink Dreams was Kitty. Leaper was Baby Frog. I can't remember others. Those got updated once I knew who they were.

We always used the UK names so there weren't so many duplicate names to worry about. But even where there were, we didn't tend to rename those.

Personally, I renamed a couple.

The new name is tambourine, let's not mention the old name.

Tootie tails is summer heatwave and Barnacle became captain.

Dancing Butterflies is Dances with Butterflies in my herd :)

I don't think I re-named any of my ponies as a child, however Niddles and Dibbles/Dimples and Ruffles had an identity crisis as the puffy sticker names were different to their box name.

Love pkw xxx

@Kingluke, I don't think Summer Heatwave counts as a rename, as it is an official Hasbro name...any more than it would be renaming a pony to use the foreign language name in whatever country rather than the English one...

I still use the french names for a lot of my 1999-2000 g2 because we bought them in Paris...but they're the names on their packages so I don't consider that to be renaming them...

I renamed all of my ponies, but that's because back than i never knew they had names.
I never gotten a pony new in box so never seen their names.
Some of my renames :
Baby Tic Tac Toe = Regenboogje (Dutch for "small" Rainbow)
Dutch Diary Pony = Old Blue
Dutch Baby Cat - Kitty
Minty = Clover
Baby Fifi = Pipa Pixie
Windy = Magic
Nice 'n' Spicy = Raver (in my herd he was a boy and he had a haircut which kinda looked like a mowhawk)

Nope, I always referred to each pony by their canon name.

My first pony, Sparkler, was renamed 'Tiffany', mostly because the package probably got thrown away in the chaos of birthday wrapping before I realized that she came with a name.

Some ponies, particularly those belonging to my way-younger sister, were designated as boys, because we needed boy ponies but didn't want to sacrifice our own ponies' identities and she was too young to protest. Gusty=Gus, Baby Cuddles=Carlos, Skyflier=Guyflier, Baby Shady=Wade,  Baby Heart Throb=Fart Throb. There were more, but I don't remember off the top of my head.

I think the only one I deliberately renamed was Starshine because I didn't know her real name.  Someone gave her to me when I was over at their house.  I can't remember if her name was Sunburst or Starburst but it was one of those two names.

Duplicate names get renamed. Ponies called Baby this or Mummy that get renamed. I prefer the UK names unless they're duplicate names of other Ponies. And I never call a Pony Lil anything.
Aside from that variants of Ponies get renamed as well, usually along the theme of the original name.

Guyflier and Fart Throb. That's beautiful.

And also a reason to see a doctor.

I remember calling baby starbow baby rainbow. I didn’t know any of the g1 ponies names so I usually called them by what their symbol was. I think I called sweet pop ice pop I always called twirler symbols because that’s what her symbol looked like.

I think we called "Hidden Treasure" something like "Treasure Hunt" because I could not remember her name for the life of me.
Aside from that, I call them by their canon US names unless I completely blank on it.

Definitely!  As a kid I either wasn't aware of or wasn't interested in the names (and genders) on the boxes/backcards, so I just named each pony after their symbols.  TAF Fifi was Bowties, Baby Gusty was Maple Leaf or just Leaf, Baby Bouncy was Beach Ball, Satin'n'lace was Wedding Bells, etc.  Tic-tac-toe was the same!  I did watch the cartoon but for whatever reason I didn't connect the characters with my toys.

Nowadays I try to use their given names.

I don’t think I did. Even if I didn’t know the name, I just went by the mental image I had of them.  I rarely talked pony in depth enough to need to refer to lesser known ponies.

As a kid of the eighties, I knew most of the early ponies and those in the animated show.  Later, before I was banned from playing with ponies, I had three of the Sweetberry ponies, Magic Hat, and ordered MO Starhopper.  I never knew any ponies after that.  Fast forward to college 1996 or 1997, I find a Baby YoYo in a thrift shop.  But I don't know that's her name.  I had not discovered the pony website with names yet.  So I remembered Whizzer from the show, YoYos whizz, so I named her baby Whizzy and made her Whizzer's daughter.
That one newborn baby pony started me back on my pony journey, to where I am today.

Yep. I didn't care about the names on the packages/couldn't read so I renamed almost all of them. Mostly easy names to remember associated with their symbols. Sugarberry was "Strawberry" etc.

My orange unicorn is now called Esmeralda after hunchback of Norte Dame because of her Tambourines

To be honest none of my ponies had official names anyway. I named my Mommy Sweet Celebrations Balloons, and at first Daddy Sweet Celebrations was named Presents but when I was a little older I changed it to Mint because of his green mane and tail and I named their baby who I lost pretty soon after I got them, Confetti. I got the Pony Bride for my 9th birthday and named her Dove. I tended to name my ponies after their marks.

I never renamed any of my ponies on  purpose, but there were a few I accidentally called the wrong name. For instance, for the longest time I had no idea Shoreline's name was Shoreline...I always remember calling her Sunshine (makes sense to me! ) When I found out her real name was Shoreline as recently as a few years ago, I was quite surprised!

Also, I always read Dainty Dahlia as Dainty Delilah (don't ask me why), so that's what she was called.

I don't recall if any of my ponies were renamed, save for calling Mommy Sweet Celebrations just Sweet Celebrations since I didn't have her family. But my best friend, who had a bunch of ponies shared with their sister, had a few.

The one that sticks out to me the most was Romperooni. Since she came nameless with Rainbow Flash, she was given a new name by the sister: Ola-oakla. Or... Holaoakla? Or... It was made to be said out loud, not written. I don't believe it meant anything, it just sounded nice. When I found out the real name, they both thought Romperooni sounded ridiculous, and honestly? I still think of the name Ohlaoakla when I see her.

Also, for a time G3 Bowtie was Bowtiey, but that's because my friend was still learning to read and misunderstood the name on the box. They were like six, it's excusable

My very first pony was the 1999 McDonalds Morning Glory, but because I couldn't read I just called her "Pinky" (creative I know..) Well we visited McDonalds three more times when they were on sale because I loved the ponies so much. I got a duplicate Morning Glory so I called them Pinky and Perky - and in my head they were twin babies.

Later when I started learning more about MLP I found their real name. I excitedly told my Mum "Pinky and Perky are actually called Morning Glory!" and she laughed and laughed! Kid me didn't get it  :pout: Its a flower okay, Mum!!

I would almost always go on Dream Valley as a kid to find out the names of all my ponies, but sometimes I'd forget.

My fancy pants babies were both called "Baby Diaper" jokingly by me and my brother.
Tiptoes (whose name I just had to look up because I still couldn't remember) was called Meadowlark after Clover's older sister in Tales. Her colours were right and she's a ballerina, like Meadowlark in the show.
Baby Cuddles was Baby Rattle until I found out her real name on Dream Valley.

I also disliked 4-Speed's NA name so I called him Trucker, his UK name.

I keep the names for real MLP ponies but name fakies, especially Remcos. Usually after a G4 pony they look like or just a fitting name for them that sounds like an actual pony name :)

As a kid I had a mix of ponies whose names and knew and ones I made up. The only name I made up that I can still remember is "Morning Song" which was my name for Brights Brightly (and to be honest I still usually think of her as Morning Song, it's a bit more normal sounding).

I've forgotten what I named most of my childhood ponies, tbh. Many of them kept their original names, but a few of my earliest ponies had their names lost along with their backcards. I do have a vague memory of naming my teeny tinies after their symbols; I just went with "Rattle" and "Blocks" or something similar.
